Global Weather Settings

Archive: 21 posts

I think LBP2 needs to implement some form of weather object. My idea for it would be that it doesn't actually affect gameplay, only visuals (like the global lighting object). Here's how it would lay out:

Weather Type - Extras (see next setting)

Rain - Thunder and Lightning
Snow - Hail/Flying Ice
Windy - Dust/Particles
Meteor Shower
Confetti (hey, why not?) - Balloons
Earthquake
Etc

Extra Effects (on/off) - Add the extra effects listed above to specific weather
Intensity (sliding bar)
Sound (on/off)
Direction (angle slider) - a possibility to change the direction the weather is "hitting" you.

You could also have a global setting (like for lighting and water) without a switch.

This would add a whole new aspect of design to levels. For instance, you could increase the difficulty of a snowy level by making you half-blinded by a blizzard, or accentuate a lonely scene with some light rain. In space? Have some space dust and comets flying around. And of course, what's a party scene without confetti?

This may be taking it too far, but they could even have surface contact with the rain/hail/etc, so you see rain drops on the ground or something, but that would probably take up too much memory and processing power.

I DON'T think these effects should have any effect on actual physics or gameplay. The only exception could be wind, which would push light enough objects in the direction it's moving.

Still, I think weather should be a definite addition to LBP2, even if it comes in, say, a DLC pack (For instance, Creator Pack 2-- or 3, considering how many suggestions there are for 2)

Thoughts?

Not new and innovative, but still, a good idea 2010-09-14 18:05:00

It's a good idea, but it's not something that couldn't be done otherwise. Maybe it wouldn't look as good - but then if ANY device or object we could make were purpose-built into the engine, it would look better as well. I think the best things to add are things that add many more possibilities, or that simply can't be done another way.2010-09-14 19:12:00

I would LOVE that! We may see it as DLC one day if Mm get hold of the idea! That is, of course, they haven't already put it in 2010-09-14 19:16:00

I LOVE IT! And maybe you should add bits on the wind like how the global water has bits in it2010-09-17 02:42:00

very cool idea. I could definitely see something like this being possible. Honestly, a raining machine would be enough for me. However, I feel if they did make this, using it would take a big chunk out of the thermometer.2010-09-17 06:36:00

i remember talking about how i wanted rain rain and more rain....so lets hope we can get some OFFICIAL rain (that splashing crap makes rain look enormous and unattractive)

Well, dont think its gonna happen. its too advanced, and could ruin the functining of the game, ya know?2010-09-17 17:10:00

I don't see how it ruins the functining of the game... it would be just visual effects that don't eat moving objects Thermo and would look much better...

It doesn't have to be just visual, I mean...I think it'd be cool if rain made you slide around a bit like if you were on glass material, snow could be set to pile up, etc. It would be more interesting as a gameplay mechanic rather than merely an effect.2010-09-21 18:31:00

I am bumping this ONLY because I don't want to make a whole new thread, and it still hasn't been implemented.2011-02-09 04:59:00

MODS frown upon bumping old threads unless you have some update or something important to post...bumping just because the idea isn't in LBP2 doesn't make it ok and they can infract you for it I think...just some food for thought

Good point. I actually just thought of something to add. Though I said the reason I bumped was because otherwise I would have just made a new topic anyway.

I'm not sure if it would take that much out of the thermo...at least not any more than adding global water already does (which is, admittedly, somewhat substantial). Games like GTA and Zelda have had weather effects that come and go, and the engine in those games doesn't take a noticeable hit. If it were simply aesthetic and didn't have any effect on the physics (like slipperiness or windy pushing around) I don't see why it would take more processing than, say, the new animated backgrounds (which, admittedly again, are pretty hefty for something like Avalonia).

Kinda weird that they haven't added this feature in yet???

I mean it's something people have been trying to add into their levels since LBP1 arrived. And the user created weather effects, although workable, are far from perfect and usually quite complicated which eats up your thermo. Funny thing, ever watch the introduction to PSN video on the LBP2 extras? IT FEATURES RAIN!!!

So obviously MM have thought about weather at some point or another.

Anyways, I'd love a weather feature. It could can have options for simple effects (animated glass style rain/snow), or more complex effects if you have more thermo space to spare (particle effects like piling snow, splashing rain, also wind pushing light objects etc). I think it would add enormously to the atmosphere of story levels and movies. And with the more complex option, showcase the technical ingenuity of MM in spectacular style much like the water add on did.

I'd really love something like this to be added into LBP because it would give levels are more realistic effect to what the weather should be like, such a sunny, rainy and snowy etc. It would be real cool and who knows something like this may eventually get implemented into the game but so much has already been added. There is always hope for even better stuff.2011-02-15 20:31:00
