Nosferatu A Sackphony Of Horrors

Nosferatu A Sackphony Of HorrorsDaveMuadDib
An LBP remake of the 1922 horror classic. This is only my second level, but I've learned alot since my Dune level and this one is far more polished and has a longer and more cohesive storyline. It stays very faithful to the movie (with a couple of glaringly obvious exceptions) and I'm hoping a few horror fans out there will enjoy my work, and maybe it'll even create some new ones!

This has taken me quite some time to pull together and it's my second ever created level. This one is based around lots of fun nostaligia (right down the the tinted black&white effects), a few platforming sections and puzzles, and a bit of storytelling. I did my best to make Nosferatu a real presence in this game, so you hopefully feel like he's always on your case!

It's not quite perfect, but I'm very happy with it and it's much better than my first attempt at a level. I'm hoping it will entertain at least some of you out there! Keen horror fans will notice some obscure Nosferatu-based references (and two easter eggs for video game fans - let me know if you spot them both!) and there are a couple of hidden score balls to be found as well. But even if you're not familiar with the story (which is essentially Dracula) it should still be pretty obvious what is going on! Please have a play and let me know what you think! All constructive feedback is greatly appreciated.

Edit: I have just opted out of the F4F scheme, because I am now moving house and I don't know when I'll have internet access again

Gave this a shot a while ago I'm super tired, but going to give some feedback based on what I remember.

-Seeing Nosferatu all the time in the level was good, it didn't get boring since you see a lot of him. The writing was well done, it made the level feel that more close to the movie.

The boat that had the coffins didn't quit feel like a boat to me, at least the inside of it. To me it just looked like the inside of a building. You also had a lot of mice in it, but I don't think I heard any sound effects for them which was weird.

There's also some decorations in the monsters kit that can help with your level, such as the hands that you see when you're reading the book. I think you just had some sponge that look liked hands, but the monster kit actually has Sackboy hands that you could use. Not sure if you even have the Monsters Kit, but if you don't, I'm sure it could help you a lot in this level since it has plenty of creepy sounds.

I think you did a pretty good job, because your level makes me want to see the movie.

I wish I could give more imput, but I played it awhile ago, and I'm dead tired.

Thank you very much for your input, I've revamped several things about the level after what you've said - I've given the top layer of the boat an actual deck and changed a few of the materials to hopefully make it seem more like an actual boat, and I've swapped the position of the captain and the coffins because it made more sense. I added mouse sound effects (which I can't believe I didn't do in the first place?!) and one or two creepy atmospheric effects. I also put the sackboy hands on the book - thanks for pointing that one out!!

I did my very best to capture the essence of the movie, whilst keeping it fun and having some of that LBP feel in there. I'm pleased to hear that you approve!

Just finished the level. I have always been a fan of the B&W silent style of Dracula. Your recreation of him was pretty much spot on. I liked I could jump out of the window to the left at the start...maybe a death scream would be good for the fall. The ship over was well done, was not too sure about the oct...liked the style, just wished he moved a lttle, and then paused for a second when he did not vanish, maybe a moving arm, that vanished when he died would add a little for the transistion. The book was nice, but if you added a bit of global for a fade in/out then it may seem better. I loved the horse ride over. The first spinner in the castle seemed just a little slow but not bad, the issue was the platform that moves down, I could run over, but because the button was one down, I would not be on its level when I got to that point and would fall off. Maybe moving it back, extending the far side of the platform it is on, or slowing the one you run on a little? The mice running were good, but they neither killed or could be killed, and I ended up with mouse traffic jams. If they were slowed and lethalized...The coffin Dracul was good, and the castle top one was a nice touch. The fade out from the jump was what I wanted with the book too. The boat as the other poster had mentioned op top was boaty, but below was far less so. The shadow was well done the plague was good, liked the part following his shadow (wished it could vanish behind the wall instead of at it). Very good sihlouettes the whole way through. Fun level, could use the corner tool on the stairs at times, also some stairs seemed a bit big, touch up the octopus, perhaps clouds with bat attacks...mabye sounds with Nosferatu. Oh good text in the level too.
If you get a chance I could use some good feedback on my levels, the Choice ones big time, but they are a series, so any of my levels still need feedback.

I've never seen the movie but I of course know who Nosferatu is. What an awesome level this was, especially for only your second level. You don't even want to see what I was creating my first/second level. They were quite scary. I especially loved the book reading part, I actually had a funny grin when I saw sackboy's hands. I have a few suggestions, not complaints, just suggestions.

- The octopus in the beginning, you should make it so that it completely disappears when it dies. It's a little awkward how the body still sits there after death.
- The characters, I would work a little harder on making more detailed characters, it's kinda strange seeing Snake there in a Nosferatu level.
- The platform that only goes down after you've grabbed the sponge was very annoying, I know you were trying to make it a challenge but it's kinda hard because you have to rush over to the button and I ended up falling off a couple times because of it.
- The part after you jump and get saved by the villagers. I was playing with a friend and we got stuck in darkness and had to use huge white stickers to finish until the next global object. It was kinda awesome using teamwork but it still sucked.

That was a fine little tribute level. I loved it!

Your visual style is pretty simple, and it works nicely. I also liked the way you changed the color of the filter here and there, just like the original, and the giant Orlock on top of the castle was a hoot! So you did a good job of staying true while mixing it up.

Oh, I also really liked the carriage ride. It's a little on the long side, but well done.

The platforming was fun too.

I do have a couple of small suggestions to tighten it up a bit. Just suggestions, mind you, but the sound effects should be all or nothing. There were times when I thought you were deliberately leaving them out, to keep to the original's silence, but then later in the level some things had sound... the fire crackling, the rats squeaking... subtle, but there, and I think going back and doing some more small stuff where things are in motion, it would help sell the action. Specifically, I'm remembering the spot where you hit the little button after racing the rising platform and a bridge falls into place. No sound on the bridge.

Other than that, I wonder if one of the other, less hollow looking wood materials would look better for your docks.

All in all, though, this is a really fun level and a great tribute to a great old film.

I haven't asked this much lately because I've gotten a lot on it already and I'm deeply embroiled in the sequel to it so I haven't had much time to play, but I'm curious what someone with your sensibilities would make of my Invasion of the Sack Men From Space! level. Looking forward to your F4F on it, when you have the time!

Hi there, thank you so much for your review, I'm glad you enjoyed!

- The octopus is probably the first thing I'd change about this game. I kept it rigid and left it there because it was the best logical way I could think of to leave the boat after such a boss battle, and a quick boss battle was important because I didn't want it to be too boring where you just sail to the end and you're done. But knowing what I know now, I might go back and redo that entire trip tbh.
- I'm a huge Metal Gear fan, so I loved the fact that Snake is there But agreed, it does distract you from the level and distract you from Nosferatu, which isn't ideal.
- The puzzle with the descending platform could do with a little bit of revamping, too, for sure. It's way too tricky and the multi-layer thing is kinda awkward.
- I wasn't aware of the problem with multiplayer!! I'll try and amend that right away.

Cheers for your suggestions, it's been a big help! I'll probably redo this level from scratch when LBP2 comes out, at which point the sky should be the limit and I can implement some really cool elements, and make Nossie's castle much more epic! And make the boat more boaty

Hi Speedy, I have reviewed your level, let me just say that I love it and it's truly one of the more absorbing and fun LBP levels I've played! I'll definitely check out some of your other levels sometime, and I can't wait for your sequel. I couldn't think of much to suggest that wouldn't take away from the charm of the level, but there were times where I wasn't quite sure where to go (ie going around Sally's flat - maybe a sticker on the wall or something to indicate that you need to go around?). The milk gun was such a cute touch that tied the whole plot of the level together!

With reference to my level-
-I loved the fact that LBP has the sepia effect, just like the movie! It's just a shame you couldn't change the sepia colour, as it was a nightmare to get the right shading for the blue night and green twilight scenes!
-Sound Effects have been a tricky one. The crackling of the fire comes from having burning objects in the level, so it kinda obliged me to add more sound effects, but agreed, these have always been more of an afterthought. When I get the time to go back and fix this level, the sfx are probably the first thing i should get right.
-I'm going to go and fix the material for the dock now.

Thanks again for playing!!

If anyone has some suggestions for how to make the second boat feel more boaty when you go below deck, it would be much appreciated!

You could have the old boat wooden ribs repeated through it and then have a part where a window was open with waves in the background, heck even sicker of waves with the item swaying, you could have the camera or the flooring rocking, and items sliding back and forth. Wooden creaks could make it even more boaty with those things...2010-09-17 09:58:00
