HDMI Cable

Archive: 32 posts

I recently got a HDMI cable from my nice cable guy, and Im wondering if it actually DOES make a difference. Ive never played in HD, and i think LittleBigPlanet SD is completely fine. What do you guys think?

It's worth it. If your TV is HD or Full-HD, of course (duh).
The textures are more detailed and visible, and the outlines are better-defined.

Which plug does it go into for my T.V.? Input1 or Input2?

Either dude, the PS3 should auto-configurate too once you plug it in too, so prev-cables aren't needed btw.

And it IS soo worth it.

Does it have the thick part around the part you plug into the T.V?
That kind of HDMI cable can unplug itself slightly from the back of your T.V and cause the visuals to ripple every once in ahwile. You can always fix this for around 3 hours by plugging the cord in fully again, but it does get kind of irritating having to stop creating every once in a while to jiggle the cord!

If you're just asking about the difference between HD and SD, then yes, it's a world of difference, especially in video games. When I first got my hdtv and then ps3, I was using the yellow, red and whites and I tried out the Gran Turismo demo that came out shortly after the ps3: I was severely disappointed in the graphics. When I switched to hdmi and actually was able to see it in HD, it made a world of difference: all of a sudden the game actually had good graphics.

If you're curious about hdmi in particular and if it's better than component or dvi (dvi isn't that popular or widely used any more), in most cases there's no discernable difference between component and hdmi cables at least as far as video is concerned. Component video cables are exactly the same as RG59 coax cable which can easily carry over a GHz of bandwith. The cable and satellite companies throw hundreds of tv channels (many in 1080i and I believe some are starting to do 1080p) and 16Mb internet to entire neighborhoods over a single coax line, so it's safe to say that three coax cables can easily handle a 1080p signal with no problems. There's no difference in quality on a good tv (hdmi can actually be worse on a lower quality tv) and, depending on the equipment, component cables can be quite a bit more reliable (I've fixed a ton of tv problems just by replacing an hdmi cable with components).

There are a few caveats, however. I'm pretty sure Blu-ray players won't send 1080p through components, but that's a copy-protection thing, not a bandwith issue. The other issue is some of the better audio codecs (Dolby TrueHD, etc) can't be sent through optical cables, so they'll need to go through hdmi to a compatible receiver, but if it's just going to a tv or a receiver that's more than a few years old, an optical or digital coax (again, RG59 just like the component cables) will suffice.

^ Aye aye, I plaed ACII on SD and was like...meh.
Then I got the HDMI and was like ZOMG! :o
(Not to mention the text is actually readable now.

Another great difference in HDMI is the loss of the "text box" in the internet browser!
That means no more short limits on how much you can type! (other than site-base limits of course. )

I don't know if you guys have noticed how I've no longer had to separate my long rants and posts since a while back?
Its because of the HDMI.

Now I can type long posts without having to stop every few lines to post the next part.

HD makes a lot of difference in PS3 games... not just for pretty factor either, you will get a better view of the scene in LBP and text will be easier to read in most games.

Although I'd say LBP is one of the few PS3 games that still holds up well in SD, HD makes a lot of difference. Makes all the detail in the textures pop so it looks better, etc.

Do you have to disconnect the Yellow Cable in order for the HDMI cable to work? Im fidgeting with it right now, and its not working.

You can have two cables connected at once, no worries.
But only one input at a time. (it won't transmit throught the HDMI and the SD cable at the same time)

Input at the Display Settings Screen or before I turn on the PS3? Because the last time I tried to connect both when I turned on the PS3, the Audio went to a completely different output.

You have to do it from your XMB settings in the PS3, there's one for display and one for audio so you have to set them both up2010-09-13 02:59:00

After you plug in the HDMI cable, you should unplug the composite cable. Then press the power button for three seconds (or until it does a second beep). This will ensure that you will be able to the new output for video and audio.

Oh, and Sehven... They're (They as in the scam artists that we buy television service) are using more than one rg-59 cable. Not to mention all the amplifiers they use.

Any one that says they cant see a difference between a High and Standard Definition picture havent seen a HD picture or are just blind.
The difference is unimaginable, theres no opinion about it.

I think a lot of people get mistaken because the do not hook it up properly, they don't put a HD signal in to it. In that case yeah it looks worse watching SD stuff on a HD TV.

So yeah use that HDMI, when you see the difference youll never want to play in SD again.

if your HDMI cable ever breaks, don't buy one that's extremely expensive.
HDMI is digital and there is no difference.

I used to be a cable technician(a scam artist) so yeah, I know all about the equipment they use. RG59 is rare outside the headends, but coax is coax: all the information is travelling on a single copper wire (once you switch from fiber optics to coax at a node, ALL the information for that whole neighborhood is carried on the cable-sure it splits and gets amplified, but every bit of coax after the node carries exactly the same information). And I'm sure that when you're using components, the entire 1GHz spectrum isn't available, but even if it's only 6MHz (the bandwith of an analog channel), that's 18MHz total across the three wires, which is plenty.

Can someone give me step-by-step instructions on how to set up the HDMI cable? I saw a video on Youtube, and when the dude started up his PS3 witch his HDMI cable attached, when it asked if you want to output audio and video for it, it only took a couple of seconds for him, as opposed to mine not working at all.

I should warn you, that HDMI cables tend to lose 1080p signal about 8-10ft and/or over. For very long distances, say, a long distance to a projector, a component video cable is better.

Oh, and DVI is just HDMI, with a bigger connecter, without audio.

1. Try connecting only the HDMI cable. Then start the PS3 and select the right input (HDMI 1 in my case);
2. See if it's working, if it is, follow the instructions on the screen;
3. If it isn't:
- Check if the cable is connected properly;
- Check if you selected the right output (there should be and indicator on the TV entrace saying if it's HDMI 1, 2, 3...)
- If it doesn't work, try connecting both cables at once and go to the options.

Idk, when I bought my HDMI cable I just had to connect it to the PS3 and it done the rest.
IMPORTANT: To reset your PS3 to SD output in case something went wrong, hold the Turn On button for 5 seconds.

It's most likely that you've got a setting wrong (make sure the tv is set to hdmi 1 or hdmi 2-whichever one you're using--and try powering on your ps3 by holding down the power button until it beeps twice... but really it should automatically detect the hdmi cable even without resetting), but you might have a tv that just isn't compatible (hdmi isn't exactly a set standard and there are problems between certain pieces of equipment and TVs: I ran into a lot of TVs that just weren't compatible with our cable boxes' hdmi connections), or a bad hdmi connector: a cheap hdmi cable is theoretically just as good as an expensive one, but sometimes they're poorly made--when I worked as a cable guy, a lot of the hdmi's we gave out were crap.

Also, when the ps3 first came out, wasn't there some talk about problems with some of their hdmi connections? Was that fixed by a fw update or a later hardware revision?

If you have a friend with an hdtv, I would try hooking your ps3 to it with your hdmi cable and see if it works. If you can get ahold of another cable, you can try that, or if you have another hdmi device, you can try hooking it to your tv. One thing about hdmi is it uses 2 way communication to so the device can detect the tv's settings and sometimes the device and tv have slightly different dialects, so you might have some luck by hooking it to another tv and getting it all configured and then moving it to your tv.

It's no better than component (for LBP) as component can do 720p, which is the highest graphics mode available for LittleBigPlanet. If your TV doesn't support 720p, it can look really crappy. (Mine's so crappy it's worse than SD mode. So I have it disabled in my settings.)2010-09-14 14:54:00

You could try. If that doesn't work, then try all those other things I suggested (or as many as you can) to find out whether the problem is your cable, your tv, or your ps3. If you end up suspecting that it's your tv, then you can do a google search for that tv's model number + hdmi to see if other people have had similar problems and if they've found a solution for it. After that, the next step is to call the manufacturer and try to work something out. If it turns out the hdmi cable your cable guy gave you is defective (I quit carrying hdmi's with me when I did cable 'cuz they gave me problems more often than they worked), you can get a new one for pretty cheap these days at walmart or where ever (you can return it if it doesn't solve your problem). Or you can get around those problems by picking up a ps3 component cable: I'm pretty sure I've seen them at Best Buy and maybe Gamestop.

Actually it's not only the resolution. HDMI let's you benefit from "full RBG color", true white (25 levels +) and true black. There's also less loss than with analogue cable.
If however you don't have the TV to actually display the difference, it should indeed be minimal and most people wouldn't notice jack.
