The level series will be in a single layer, occupied by physical objects. You will play as a sackbot form of Samus Aran, the female bounty hunter. The story begins where the official series ends (In other words, after Metroid: Fusion) As Samus boards the Galactic Federation space base, things begin to go horribly wrong. All of her past enemies are returning, stronger than any natural force could ever make them. Ridley, Kraid, Mother Brain, SA-X, Dark Samus, Space Pirates--they all have only a single purpose. Destroy the one that had ruined them. Destroy Samus Aran.

[Shape Buttons]
X - Jump
[] - ???
O - ???
/ - Toggle HUD

[Directional Buttons]
Up/Down - Cycle Equipment (As of now, Grapple Beam, Xray Visor, Missiles and Power Bombs are available options)
Left/Right - Cycle Beams (Power, Ice, Fire, Plasma)

[Shoulder Buttons]
L1 - Use Equipment
L2 - Change Grapple Beam Length (Other uses ???)
R1 - Fire Beam
R2 - ???

[Analogue Sticks]
Left Analogue - Move
L3 - ???
Right Analogue - Aim

Jumping will start off basic. The average "single-jump" is the only function of the X button at the beginning. There will be the Space Jump (It was a super long, infinijump way back when, but now it's a double jump) and Screw Attack (rapidly press X after Space Jumping to spin and attack, as well as "glide" distances. Basically how it was originally, except there's gravity affecting it) as you progress.
The weapons are probably obvious if you've played Metroid games. There are four beam types (Power[non-elemental], Ice, Fire, and Plasma[electric, basically]), though I doubt I'll have combinations like some previous games had. The options for Missiles, and Power Bombs (at the least) will become available.
Equipment will consist of (at least) the Grapple Beam, Xray Visor (reveals weakpoints in enemies and structures), Missile and Power Bomb. L2 changes the grapple's length, with four positions possible ( [player]-4-3-2-1 ) It snaps back to position 1 after the 4th setting.
Hyper Running is also in existence, and you can use it by holding Circle. You have to be on the ground and moving for it to work. I'll try to get the Shinespark in as well.
All musical credit goes to jjmac13 in my Metroid Levels (Right now, another person might have stuff in the Demo Video level. It's going to be removed shortly anyway, but the credit IS listed on the level description)

The whole "engine," if you will, is being refined as of February 7th (today). It's very functional, and only needs a few fixes. I'm working on the Morph Ball currently, but almost everything mentioned here is included in the playable demo level Metroid: Training Ground Alpha (The exception is missiles, as the level is cardboard xD I'll update it in among other things, such as the Morph Ball and a section for Power Bombs)

Let me know your thoughts!

Hm, sounds nice and well thought out

However, about the beams... I think it'd be better to have "elements".

So like some beams are more powerful against certain enemies, that sort of thing.

From what I can tell, you use the D Pad to switch between the beams, but it seems Plasma is better then wave is better then normal. Having the beams have specific uses would drastically improve it.

Also, for R2 or some other unused button- grappling hook! You swing to stuff and can fire while up there, like normal grappling hook only home made or something. Yeah.

Ahh, good points, all of them!
I forgot to mention up it there, but for beam/ability power-ups, I would add the "receival" at the end, and next level it would be there. Unless, of course, I could get it to work WITHOUT doing that
I was considering the ICE Beam, as Super Metroid had it, but I wasn't sure. I'll probably have at least that and some others (Fire and Electricity?) and then possibly the upgrades such as Wave will be standard for all after a point.
Thanks

Thanks for the backup
Sadly, LBP2 hasn't yet released. It must make a quicker arrival!
I've also just gotten the idea for Visors. Maybe I'll see if I can squeeze those in
Controls might be L2/R2 to cycle through, and RockSauron's Grapple could be an Ability? Or maybe R2 Grapple, L2 Visor? Just an Xray/Thermal, probably..
I'm not sure. It'll all depend on what I can do when I get it

Edit:
I wonder if anyone's gonna notice my well-hidden Easter Egg.

Hm, yeah I think the Grapple should be an ability... ideally you can swing and fire in my dream world.

So, it would take place over multiple levels I assume... would you be able to go back to previous levels to use stuff you gained later in previous levels? Like you found grapple in level 3, can you use it in level 2? Hm, though that would raise the question of what you could earn persay... Maybe there could be a store of sorts... where you use secret stuff you find throughout the series to purchase new abilities, so like in my example, you use the grapple hook to find something that is used to purchase, um, I unno. D:

Hmm. Well, in the original games, it's a requirement to go back with them, as well as a bonus.
But, for it being LBP, I might try to get just the Bonuses in there. Hmmm. It'll all be veerry tricky
Going by current LBP methods, I could include a sticker-key upon receiving the Ability, and at the start of eligible levels have an "Item Pickup Section,"in which you would apply the sticker and gain the power-up. But I don't know all the ins and outs of LBP2 (of course), so I might find an easier way
As for the store idea, maybe finding a special "redeemable" key for a non-mandatory power-up? Probably get it the same as my "Item Pickup Section."

Ahhh, but knowing my building skills, I might need a few members to aid me on this when the game's released. Any volunteers? Let me know by PM or post, and tell what all you're good at

Story:
While traveling through an endless space, Samus recieves a strange transmission.
It gave no subject, nor a message. It simply read the coordinates [SECTOR 12216]
Irritated, Samus deleted the message as she mumbled to herself, "Stupid Spam mail"

But seriously this sounds cool. Even I was thinking about doing a Metroid series with a unique story, after I played M:m. Unfortunately, I probably won't have time (as you can see in my sig). Good luck to ya!

Hmm. I've got an idea for the HUD, but I don't know how many of you would like it. Here it is, let me know your thoughts
First off, at the start of the levels, there could be an "Options Screen," things like HUD Visibility (how see-through it is), how much HUD shows anyway (Like all of it [little details, too], just the essentials[no details], just Health, or no HUD.), and so on.
And then maybe making the HUD pop up when you're in combat or if you, for example, switch to the Ice Beam. Or would that be an option, too? Probably.
As for working on RockSauron's "shops" and several other of these ideas into the level start, maybe the classic Savepoint at the end, and next level you start there with your options?
Still so much to think about, and still about 2 months left before I can actually work.
LBP333, funny stuff Makes me wonder if anyone's gonna see that Easter Egg. I'm sure SOMEONE's wondered about that awfully large number, right?

i think you should try to make the ability where you turn into the ball and can go in vents and stuff. you could maybe do it with a toggle switch that emitts the ball version and then when you press whatever button you set up it toggles back to normal Samus i love metroid prime and wish you the best of luck on you project 2010-09-12 14:54:00

Thank you
And yeah, I was just wondering, "How on Earth (Or Little Big Planet ) would I make the Morph Ball?" That would most certainly be in there, I just need to think of a way to get it to work smoothly.
Come to think of it, maybe instead of making you smaller, it becomes basically a Hazard Shield? Not LITERALLY a shield, and not changing it from a Morph Ball, but say using it let you roll over electricity/fire? Although that might limit the ways of death.. Hmmmm.
Again, anyone that has experience with building, I may need help on this when LBP2's released. You'll need commitment, 'cause it'll be long

EDIT: Yes RockSauron, you're getting closer
It IS a 3 letter code, but which letters?

B = 2
P = 16

AHH! Hooray! I guess I'll have to do that then, huh?
Hmm. Although a large peanut in a Metroid game is unlikely. xD
Ooh! Bonus area. Peanut Mountain. And a peanut-related ability?
Haha, what a great game it'll be!

EDIT:

Hm, yeah I think the Grapple should be an ability... ideally you can swing and fire in my dream world.

Swing and fire.. Just got the idea: L3 Grapple. If it were an Ability, there'd be no Missiles while Grappling. L3 is unused, so it'll probably go there Well, unless I get the Morph Ball to work right, then THAT'll probably be L3, for convenience
Hm. Already full on Controls, aren't I?

EDIT2:
I've updated the Original Post a bit, mostly Beams and the new Options. There's (hopefully) gonna be all that stuff. If any of you don't like that, tell me and I'll consider It's about the community I don't see how people could argue against weapon upgrades though, unless you say it's "not Metroid." Then again, neither is a Peanut boss. xD

Oh yeahhh! Sixaxis! Haha, spaced out on that. If Morph Ball will work, maybe. Or spaceship navigation. Orrr... Instead of "in-game" Morph Ball, more of a top-down? That's the best way I can think of so far. Hmm. LBP2 must be mine!2010-09-22 21:01:00

As amazing as that is, I think it's actually illegal to put on Youtube, or anywhere else. D: Beta information is supposed to be top-secret, right?

Ahh, poo. I just realized the difficulties my current aiming system has. Right thumb is used for aim and shoot, separately. Hmm. I could fix it by either making aim AND shoot on the right analogue, or move shoot to R1 and change necessary controls. Maybe Square will be Visor, L1 use ability, R1 shoot, L2/R2 swap ability, and Circle for any interactions? I think that'd do.. Suggestions?

(PS: This shouldn't be counted as a double-post, as the rules say "You may make two consecutive posts in the same thread only if you have new, substantial information to add, which you feel is necessary for others to see, and a reasonable amount of time has passed since making the previous post." Since it's been 16 hours and this is substantial information, I think I'm good on this.)

Your Out of the loop?

MM lightened up on the nda. Is fine to talk about and post videos about.

Theres a 20ish page thread with everyone asking the beta-users questions, and said users shareing all kinds of neat stuff.

Like, you can customize your planet, change the material of it all, water, diffrent biomes/diffrent materials for diffrent continents, apply decorations..

As for aiming/controlls,

Yea, good ieda.

You should keep the fireing and aiming system as close to that of he paintinator as you can, that way the players dont need to learn a new play style. much more enjoyable.

You could probably tag the crosshairs, so that the sackbot would aim at them, along with the raised armcannon animation... would work nicely

That kind of game isn't really my scene.

But you seem very motivated and your sketches are very appealing So... All the best, and good luck!

Maybe I'll like your level better than the original game! More than likely!

@Mattbru77 : I didn't look around first, then I thought about that and noticed it xD So yeah, nevermind it. My bad
By "tag the crosshairs," do you mean like a lock-on system, just showing targets, or making one that'd move where you aim? A lock-on system might be nice, but I don't like the show targets one. As for aiming with it, I thought about it but it may be difficult. You could have it close/medium/far, but it's not going to be the right distance all the time. And a line/laser isn't Metroid-like in my opinion. If there's a good way to do it, I shall make it optional

@Oddmania : Metroid is, in my opinion, the best series of shooters ever. So yeah, I'm motivated! Haha

And yeah, well..Those weren't super important, anyway. I'm probably gonna work up some new concept photos, I have 2,600 minutes on the demo download of LBP2. xD I hope that's at least 2,500 minutes off.
But yes, I beat Super Metroid today. Come to think of it, I haven't thought out the whole story yet.. At least Metroid games aren't heavy on story in the classics, anyway. I'll get one though.

Yes, I shall. Morph ball, to be exact. I'm thinking of a circular HUD, rather than the common square ones that go edge-to-edge. Here's a quick concept picture, let me know if you think I should go through with it Also, the lettering on the boxes are just placeholders. M=Missile, SM=Super Missile, PB=Power Bomb, Po=Power Beam, I=Ice Beam, F=Fire Beam, Pl=Plasma Beam, G=Grapple Beam, XV=X-ray Visor, TV=Thermal Visor.
I'll get some symbols to represent them in the game.

28521

Edit: It would give more room than that. I can't draw really big pr really small, so the picture is a little misleading there.

As of the release date/today, I'm fiddling with the controls. Not directly into this, but a separate "beta character," if you will. Or alpha. I dunno. Alpha for now ._. It's coming along alright, but if there's a neat trick I should know or whatever, message me here or on PSN

^^From the original post's edit. Ahh, the CE is comforting Two hours of Create, at the least. And my sackboy's lookin' good. Anyway, I'm likely to ask for help here'n'there, specifically on hologram animation and general controls. Speaking of which, what's the best way to go about a firing system? (This doesn't have to be an "animated version," I'm practicing with a sackbot. I'd like a cursor that rotates around him for aiming and such, and is able to shoot different things. My current setup has a 0% hologram arrow bolted onto his waist with a gyroscope and joystick rotater for aiming/resetting. The end of the 0% arrow has 4 potentially visible arrows that light up when it's weapon is in use. I'll get a picture when I can, but I know there's gotta be a better way) Thanks

Is this technically a double post? If so, sorry o:
Anyway, I've accomplished a pretty decent chunk of stuff. I have four beams (left/right Dpad scroll, R1 fire), a cross-hair, and some other little things as well. For now, as I've said, it's a sackbot in control, and I'm more fond of that than I thought. I'm working on equipment (Up/down Dpad scroll, L1 use) at the moment, and I'll begin work on a Morph Ball once I either switch to holoanimation or find a way with sackbots. I'll probably release a tech demo for the community to see once it's all done
