Can somebody tell me what to do? I bought a 40 GB PS3 and it only has about 1 GB left! I cant really afford to delete anything. So I was just wondering... Where can I buy a new hard drive? Where can I get it installed? And how much would it cost? I just reallly need that space for LBP 2! Thanks for the help! | 2010-09-09 02:49:00 Author: OK1124 Posts: 126 |
IIRC you can use a regular 2.5" notebook harddisk, and you should be able to install it yourself, or have a friend who's familiar with PC hardware do it. By the way, are you sure you can't make any room? A lot of games put installation data in the Game Data section, and if you're no longer playing the game, you might as well get rid of it. You can keep the Save Data, or back that up to a USB disk and delete it too. As far as I know, LBP is the only game that actually keeps play data in the Game Data section, so don't delete that one. | 2010-09-09 09:44:00 Author: Rogar Posts: 2284 |
If you google for something like "change PS3 hard drive", there's a ton of guides out there on how to do it. Assuming you want to keep your existing data on the new drive, then as a brief guide... Go buy a new 2.5" drive, and some sort of USB-based storage device capable of storing the 40GB you already have. Do a complete system backup onto the USB device. Swap the internal disks. Restore from the backup. Note that certain types of content may not restore correctly, including your LBP profile, so make an LBP profile backup before you start, then reimport once you're done. | 2010-09-09 10:50:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |
Yeah, stupid Ubisoft with their uncopyable AC2 saves... | 2010-09-09 11:25:00 Author: Rogar Posts: 2284 |

Oh ok. So how do i back up EVERYTHING? Is there a place on the ps3 menu that says back up all files or something? | 2010-09-10 03:53:00 Author: OK1124 Posts: 126 |
In the system settings, there's a backup option I believe. | 2010-09-10 04:40:00 Author: Chump Posts: 1712 |
A 100 gig HDD will cost you about ~60$ (maybe a bit more) | 2010-09-10 04:58:00 Author: Fishrock123 Posts: 1578 |
A 100 gig HDD will cost you about ~60$ (maybe a bit more) Ugh, get a larger one than that. With the current trend of game installations you will really need it. | 2010-09-10 16:00:00 Author: microchirp Posts: 412 |
Yeah, if you want to future proof your PS3 then I wouldn't settle for anything less than 320gb. You could just delete some large game data (not save data) file you are not using when you need the space for LBP2 and then wait for black friday to find a good deal on some hard drives. You can also check sites like dealsucker, slickdeals, and newegg. | 2010-09-10 16:39:00 Author: Reef1978 Posts: 527 |
Alright, I found a hard drive. But, now I have another question. Instead of posting a new forum, i'll just post here. How could I transfer my 40 GB memory from my PS3 hard drive to another brand new hard drive. I only have a 4 GB flash drive, so i don't want to keep transferring 4 GB at a time. Is there any other way I could transfer the memory over? Thanks for the help. | 2010-09-11 20:13:00 Author: OK1124 Posts: 126 |

Is there any other way I could transfer the memory over? I don't think you can even transfer 4GB at a time. As far as I'm aware, you'll have to have a single USB device capable of storing the whole 40GB (although the backup is compressed somewhat). | 2010-09-11 22:07:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |
You can always take part by part all your saves on the pen drive and store them on your PC (i have a 4GB pendrive too and have taken some saves out, all you will need on the pendrive is the saves, the games, updates and all DLC will be re-downoaded when you put the new hardrive), ive read on some forums that it might get some complications when making a regular backup with the ps3 backup function, so many suggest to better take all the saves one by one to prevent corrupted data (i dont think it takes that much time, actually depends on how many games do you have tho), and for the game saves that cant be copied they can actually be taken away of the ps3 with the backup function. (also, take note that once you take away the ps3 40 GB hard drive you cant put it on any other ps3 as it will ask for formatting and all data will be lost, so make sure to backup everything before taking out the harddrive) Hope it helps even if its 4 days late >_< | 2010-09-16 19:51:00 Author: Ragnarok Posts: 898 |

I suggest everyone to buy a Western Digital 500 GB, they're very reliable (more than the Toshiba used in PS3) and have a good price. Then 500 GB are almost infinite. I have installed every game I could (have more than 70 total) a 15-ish of PSN games, lots of vids from the PSN store (around 50) and I have still 230 GB free. | 2010-09-16 19:58:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
I still have my 80GB stock hard drive and is still rocking, btw, i didnt knew that the ps3 could support that much memory space, and yeah western digital hard drives rock, i have a 720 external drive which i use to back up pc, 360 and wii stuff, very cheap, like 60 bucks and reliable. | 2010-09-16 20:03:00 Author: Ragnarok Posts: 898 |

Thats what I did! And its wayyy cheaper than buying a brand new PS3. | 2010-09-17 22:08:00 Author: OK1124 Posts: 126 |

Nice! The problem is: The hard drives are non-compatible with the PS3 because of their format. If yours does that, i'll tell you how to fix it. | 2010-09-18 19:32:00 Author: OK1124 Posts: 126 |
Nice! The problem is: The hard drives are non-compatible with the PS3 because of their format. If yours does that, i'll tell you how to fix it. I see, has it been fixed or is it still a problem? Would a format of the hard drive sort things out when I get it? | 2010-09-18 21:44:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
I see, has it been fixed or is it still a problem? Would a format of the hard drive sort things out when I get it? Well, I just bought a new hard drive and its not really compatible with the PS3... Just format the hard drive to FAT32 format. And make sure you transfer the data with an external hard drive or Flash Drive, not a hard drive enclosure. They dont work cuz the PS3 has to erase everything on the hard drive anyways, so transfer the data after you put it in. | 2010-09-21 21:06:00 Author: OK1124 Posts: 126 |
