About This Thread
Hey everyone - you may have noticed I've been writing a series of detailed reviews for a while now. At last I feel like I've settled in on a feedback style that works well and gives lots of info, and so I'm officially opening this review thread!

http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss280/Blue-Bullet-Bill/ReviewSectionTwo.png

Reviews And Review Sections
My reviews come in three sections: playthrough, summary, and review. The first section is a log of my thoughts as I play through the level - what I think and feel as I go through your level. The summary is where I reflect on your level - this is where you'll find most of the critique, aka the important part. Third is the review, a number scoring of the level's aspects, and a Good, Bad, Ugly segment ripped straight from EGM. I also come up with a stupid heart description if I hearted your level - just for the luls.

Questions And Answers
Can I request my level to be reviewed?
Sure - but chances are it's already in mind. I'm going to try to review everything that comes through these forums, especially the ones that DON'T get feedback as fast.

Why are you doing this? Aren't these overkilled a bit?
LOL - why yes, they are! But I feel these might make up for the well-meaning folks who just post "Kay good level 5 stars bai", and basically just come for the Thanks! system. As for why I'm doing this... well, I always have wanted to be a member of the Spotlight crew. And since my plan of murdering Taffey and taking his place failed Because I know writing good feedback and being dedicated is part of how folks get chosen, I figured doing this would give me a good chance. Oh, and helping the community doesn't hurt either. ;-D

Can I request my level to be reviewed?
Well sure - but chances are, if you've made a thread, it's already on my list! I'll be sure to get to your level soon.

Part I: Playthrough

Dramatic train is quite dramatic. This area could have used more decoration - the flat landscape could trick someone into thinking this is a noobish level, with one good vehicle. CRASH - Let's check this place out! The lack of music here is somewhat ominous, and the sharp beeps against the silence are quite cool. I loooove how the machines fill up too. Okay, time to investigate.

The music in this level is very nice and fits well. I also love the signs sprinkled throughout, they look great. Great puzzles here in these first three rooms. Second room is great, I do something like it in my upcoming level. Anyways... Swinging up these circles is a blast, and using checker pieces in the background here is GENIUS. Seriously, in concept it sounds like horrible contrast, but in practice looks wonderful.

This next room, I have to post my original reaction to:
"Okay... how is this going to work... *pulls switch* OMGWTFBBQ that was AWESOME"
In concept, it's nothing new. In practice, I'm retrieving my socks which were just BLOWN OFF. I really, really like this idea.

The circle things are a much-needed break for straight platforming, and the wall platforms as well. The wall challenge is a lot of fun, and I love how you edited the shapes you jump on. The next section is the only part I have a problem with - it's just a tad too hard. Reduce the wobble a little, and reduce the spin speed a good bit. 1000 deaths later...

Ooh, crushers! :-D I just love them... jump, jump, switch pull, and down I go! I like the idea of this door, and then shoving the block - I've never seen the latter done before. Okay, this platforming section is full of win. Bubble chains - and you're thoughtful enough to let missed bubbles fall for less skill players too, clever. The speed section is nothing new, but a great implementation - I wondered what an Xed clock meant. :-(

Platforms appearing where you walk... where have I seen that before? OH YAH, Super Mario Galaxy. I'm on to you. ;-) Great idea, bringing it to LBP. Oh look, an elevator... because NOTHING ever goes wrong with LBP elevators. Wheeeee... ZOMG Evil Robot Scoreboard - and worse, a great level is over!

Part II - Summary

This level is a ton of fun - that goes without saying. However, it goes beyond typical 'Kay, itz a factory, gets out of it n stuff. Kthkzbai.' domain. The level really has a feel of its own. Unique warning signs and quirky background contribute to this so much, and you really feel like you're going through some sort of crazy plant. It's not a real highscore type of level, but that's okay - Sacky needs a break after all the Jonze style levels these days. As for gameplay, A++ to you my friend. Seriously, there were so many great moments in this, as my playthrough will attest to. Quite a few awesome ideas, and you'll no doubt see the influence in parts of my next level. Great work on this.

Part III - Review

Looks: 5/5
Platforming: 5/5

Originality: 5/5
Replay Value: 5/5

The Good: GAMEPLAY, lots and lots of great gameplay.
The Bad: A few difficult spots, not much though.
The Ugly: How much I'm going to ripoff. D-:

Five stars and a shiny metal heart!

Part I: Playthrough

Oh look, it's this level again. Only like the 47th time I've played through it. ;-)

So right off the bat, everything looks great. It's clear you really spent some time corner editing this. This time, I'm actually taking notice of a few new things - like the tiny little leaves used to make the grass really pop. Okay, so up here to unlock secret # 1 - and by the way, the secret thing is a really good idea. Helpful to those like me who see how relatively low their score is and say WTFBBQ.

Now then, dooooown the mountain! I like the simple platforming here - it's actually refreshing to see something so muted in a platformer, what with people like Jonze and I flinging sacks around like there's no tomorrow. Also, sliders are a great idea - I think you may just see something like that in my new level. Moar running and jumping in area two - nice waterfall by the way, but one problem - you can see the piston when you jump high enough off the cliff.

Then, uhm... more running and jumping and bubbles, and uhm... Well, rather than me try to describe those events in different ways over and over, I'll leave it at this: playing through this level is a blast, even if it is just simple mechanics.

Part II: Summary
Wow, if gardens could really grow this awesome, you'd have Blue the botanist today. :-D

When I first heard about this, I thought it would be another Jonze level - but this feels much different. It's a nice take on platformers compared to what I've seen in other levels, and running combos is fun yet frantic. Trying to reach that (g** ******* m***** **********) next bubble before your combo ends makes the level all that much more fun.

Graphics are another great area. Let's be honest here: graphics weren't exactly the high point of your previous levels, but this is different - they're great! Stickers, lots and lots of stickers create an inviting atmosphere, and tiny corner editing is impressive as well. I only had one problem, and that was the copypasta trees, but that's overlookable.

Great level dude.

Part III: Review

Looks: 5/5
Platforming: 5/5
Story: Not Available
Originality: 4/5
Replay Value: 5/5

The Good: So... many... bubbles! And lots of great platforming too!
The Bad: Copypasta trees are really the only thing - good work with that.
The Ugly: You say the next one is only 1/3 done! D-:

Five stars and a bubble-stuffed heart!

Part I: Playthrough
Okay, so here we go! Great grassy look, and the third layer glitch really shines here. The environment looks amazing with the materials you picked. Oh yeah tree? Well you know what? I'm using EXTRA plastic water bottles today! And not the recycled kind either! Have fun dying in pollution! The bridge here is beautiful eye candy. Some of the usual switch pulling up ahead, not too much to say about it, other than it's fun and creative.

Okay, so when I first saw the glass circle, I was so relieved. It's incredibly good to know that even the best of the best use a good old GAMEPLAH FILLAR once in a while. *grab wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee* I love the way the floor appears under you in this section.

Next thing to really talk about is the castle section. Looks amazing, and the stickers really bring it out as well. I did have problems with the gameplay here, however: that spike thing! It moved so fast, and when I did make it, I usually ended up in the gas pit. :-( But oh well, no harm done. On to the end area - which looks absolutely amazing, and was clearly created for the sole purpose of looks. Great end to a great level!

Part II: Summary
Wow, another great Jonze level! This one is a bit different from the rest though - it was a real artfest in here. Materials looked amazing as usual, but even more so here. And with this level, I hereby award you your Jr. Sticker User badge - it's nice to see one of us figured them out. :-D There's also some nice objects in here - from the various Chickadee trees to Sack's awesome windmill (Grr, you knew I was doing a windmill level) house, there's plenty of eye candy.

Gameplay is also awesome. Though not as groundbreaking as TCII, it's still the classic switch pulling, BUBBALS grabbing fun. There's a lot of variety in the mix too, puzzle in the 'forest', classic in the castle, and filler in between. There's something for everyone!

One thing disapoints me though: no starting dialog? I would have liked to hear a bit about how Sacky escaped TEH DANGERUS ISLA MOYA!

I'm sorry things are turning out so short, it's very hard for me to express how much I love (or in this case, lurve) your levels. Great job though!

Part III: Review
Looks: 5/5
Platforming: 5/5
Story: 4/5
Originality: 5/5
Replay Value: 5/5

The Good: Joo lrn these stickar thingz? Joo teach meh plox? GREAT ARTWORK!
The Bad: Spike pillar of doom!
The Ugly: Number of times said obstacle killed me.

Five stars and a green, grassy heart!

Part I: Playthrough
The simple orange material in the opening shot looks great, and I like your lazy character here. Love the scarecrow too. So a little platforming and dialog, and I'm on my way. The tree and tent look really good! You also made a great choice of music here, at first it seemed like it wouldn't fit, but it really flows with the level. Up ahead, a machine and a robot character. I read the story about him, but I have to say it's still very out of place. The machine is very cool, however. Into the thickets!

I like Jack, of course. (Ba dum tiss)

No really, he's my favorite character. Cool work with him! Okay, I return the wood and then go explore. Let me tell you, I love this little cramped area, and how it's possible to get epic combos in it. Okay, take the wood to Lameo, and then back to the right.

This next area gave me a very familiar feeling, and it's a huge compliment to you. You remember Ocarina of Time, right? (Who doesn't?) When I entered this tree, I felt like I was right in that first dungeon. Hey, this tree even has a face, too! Come to think of it, there's even lots of bugs! Hmm... I think I know a little inspiration for this level. ;-) Anyways, the platforming here is great. I love the spinning spiked platforms. The broken limbs up here look AMAZING, I seriously cannot imagine how long that took. (And how many red screens you went through making it.) A little more cramped platforming and it's over.

Part II: Summary
So by now I know what to expect from a Spark level - both awesome platforming and amazing graphics, and this level didn't disappoint. From the great characters to the platforming dungeon, it was a lot of fun. When I heard about this level, I thought it was going to be like Leaves, but I was pleasantly surprised. (NOT that Leaves wasn't good, it just would have been a step down at this point.) You captured a simple, fun feel with the plain orange material, and yet added an elegant feel with the giant trees. The platforming felt very natural and flowed nicely. No obvious flaws, great work!

Part III: Review
Looks: 5/5
Platforming: 5/5
Story: N/A
Originality: 4/5
Replay Value: 5/5

The Good: Graphics, graphics, graphics!
The Bad: Not really much at all!
The Ugly: Not this level, that's for sure. :-D

Five stars and a spongey orange heart!

Part I: Playthrough
This is my very first time playing through - I made myself wait until I could write feedback. :-) This is a cool little starting area. I like how it really seems like the vines have taken over, and so they don't just seem randomly placed. Nice third layer scenery too! Into the cave, to be greeted by a cool green dude. Hmm, have any Lucky Charms? (Sorry, I couldn't resist...)

A little button push and deeper into the cave. Up the elevator, which has some really nice scenery during the ride. I head over to the left first, and wow, that's a lot of stickers. All the greenery looks great! Seeing no obvious next step, I try right... oh, okay, it's in the temple. Tug on the secret leaf, and presto - more button pushing! I get everything sorted and head into the headquarters.

I'm loving the half swallowed tower here, and the windmill is a nice eye candy touch too. The gameplay in the next area is phenomenal, into the tunnel. Loving the little guy, though he seems a little out of place, as humanoid as he is. The tunnels themselves stand out thanks to your rimming effects with the green glass. Speaking of - nice idea with the invisible hazards thing. I'm surprised I haven't seen it used before. Cool machine in the next spot. Aww... is it over? Already?

Part II: Summary
Another great level here, but there are some noticeable flaws. Let's start with the good.

The look of this level is INCROYABLE, as Broque Monsieur would say. There's more stickers piled on top of one another than there are calories in a KFC Double Down. (Excuse me, I'm feeling witty today. :-P) All the stickers really add an atmosphere to the level and complete the feel. Your corner editing is also worthy of praise, as is your use of the third layer. Lastly, your green materials get the theme across without being overbearing.

Gameplay is good, but it just feels a bit repetitive. Don't get me wrong, I love my basic switch pressers, but this level never seems to get past finding the next button at some parts. I do like your platforming obstacles though.

Now, I have one pet peeve. It's when people place their prize stickers in random places to show off. If you can't make it fit somewhere in the level, then just don't use it, please! If you have the sticker, you've already gotten your fifteen minutes of fame, and spamming it in levels doesn't do anything but make you look braggy.

It's still a really good level, I just wanted to point out some things to improve on.

Part III: Review
Looks: 5/5
Platforming: 5/5
Story: 4/5
Originality: 4/5
Replay Value: 4/5

The Good: Graphics were out of this world! (Ba dum tiss)
The Bad: Some gameplay felt recycled.
The Ugly: My 'Oh look, it's that sticker again' face.

Five stars and a green martian heart!

Part I: Playthrough
So right off the start everything looks really nice, lots of corner editing detail on that pipe. The emmiter sound is SO annoying, but I guess you can't really do much about it. Hopping, skipping across toxic sludge, and then I love the layer puzzle here. The mouse baddy is awesome. Love how the pipe breaks, and how you jump through the gap - cool idea there. I like the new dry area and its basic platforming. I get into a dark area - awesome idea! Why didn't I think of that? Into the fuse room, and I love the rolling ball puzzle. Fixing the generator is a blast too - great work here. To the elevator! The elevator is a bit unedited though, just some basic shapes holding it together. Oh, it breaks? How could I have seen that coming? :-P The factory area is awesome, the whole thing. I don't really have much more to say about it than that. I LOVE the joke at Bieber though!

Part II: Summary
This level is very good, especially for a first time level. I love the graphics, but in a few spots they're still messy - work on keeping them consistent. I like how you worked on making the pipes look really good, they fit in nicely. Gameplay is fun through and through, whether avoiding sludge or fixing circuits, it's all good here. Great work with this level!

Part III: Review
Looks: 4/5
Platforming: 5/5
Story: N/A
Originality: 5/5
Replay Value: 5/5

The Good: Platforming, puzzles.
The Bad: Uneven graphics.
The Ugly: Glockenpop (Shudders)

Five stars and a sludgy heart!

Part I: Playthrough
Right off the bat, wow. Some people are going to tell you that the unedited block shapes look ugly, but for my part, I think they look great! I like the combination of the clashing sounds and music. Oh! And now that I see what's making that sound, I'm even more impressed! Cool gameplay here! (By the way, I changed into my King Blue costume here - I'm blending in! :-D) Here I had a problem, where I fell off the second elevator and it got stuck. I had to restart the level. Maybe you could put a grab switch to get it back?

I looove this crushing machine! It has some really fun gameplay, and the SFx add a lot. I also like your three-step sticker switch puzzle. Only complaint is the sticker is hard to see - maybe blue splat would have been a better choice? Also, it's a bit tough to reach the sliding grab material, but that may just be my own ineptitude. Once up there, the falling platforms take you by surprise, it might have been better to add an area to watch and see what would happen. These are just tiny design flaws, it's still great.

The domino platforms, on the other hand, are a bigger problem. They are extremely tough to get up, and its a fairly long section. If it had been a smaller area, it might not have been such a big deal. After that, the slide section is a lot of fun. I found the secret elevator. ;-) A while later, I had trouble with a vehicle - it went so fast, that when I hit the wall, it would register as a crash. I got through it eventually, and now I can't wait for the sequel!

Part II: Summary
Not much I didn't say in the playthrough, so I'll just say this: I'm voluntarily giving up my title as King of Blue Levels. We can instead rule over Bluetopia together.

Part III: Review
Looks: 5/5
Platforming: 5/5
Story: N/A
Originality: 4/5
Replay Value: 5/5

The Good: Great blue design!
The Bad: A few gameplay flaws.
The Ugly: How awesome this level is compared to Blue Blitz. You rule!

Five stars and a blue metallic heart!

Part I: Playthrough
I managed to hold off on playing it until now, so this is first-time feedback.

Looks great off the bat, with the flowers and the cloud. Love the well area, especally because the well itself looks great. Onward, your trees look great, as does the material selection. The land really pops! The first jump in the forest is a bit of a problem, tricky to get over. Uhm, I know this will seem a bit like cheating... but that's really all I wrote for playthrough. I was enjoying it too much to write!

Part II: Summary
Well, this is another great addition to what's sure to be my favorite series since Timber Canyon! First and foremost, gameplay. The gameplay remains simple but fun, but I would caution you about keeping the 'but fun' in that. It needs a bit more variety - luckily, Bubbly Dream seems the perfect place to try some over the top, so I can't wait! I like the still-awesome fast pace of bubble collecting, having to jump at exactly the right place, change layers at the perfect time, it's really great!

Graphics are also awesome. You picked perfect ground for this level, and your near-excessive use of stickers created a fun setting. I'm very, very glad to see the perfectly edited trees - if I recall, copypasta trees were one complaint I had about Garden. Nice work there. As for story, not much, but what there was left me craving more.

Part III: Review
Looks: 5/5
Platforming: 4/5
Story: 5/5
Originality: 4/5
Replay Value: 5/5

The Good: Lots of fun graphics and a cool story.
The Bad: Gameplay is starting to feel a tad stale.
The Ugly: My language at that one jump.

Five stars and a bubble-stuffed heart!

Wow, that was fast!
I have a feeling you'll recognize a level up there tomorrow... I'm gonna try to cram three in after school, and I feel like something with hateful trees.

This is great B3! You are certainly among the best reviewers out there, so I am glad to see that you are doing this. I would ask for a review, but you have been awesome about reviewing my levels anyway so I guess that all I can say is thanks :-D

Are you going to catalog all your reviews from threads into this thread? I know it would be a pain, but you could ask people to find the reviews for you and post them here, and then you could place them into the original post. That we we do most of the work for you, plus it will really boost how many posts are in this thread (but maybe you don't want that).

I just figured I would toss it out there so you don't have to start from scratch since you already have so many amazing reviews you have done :-)

Poo, I assume what you're asking is why all the reviews I've done aren't up there. I had reviewed some other levels before I settled on the style above, including yours. This thread is only for the finalized style I've settled on now.

However, I may at some point update the recent feedback (Yours, Fastbro's, the other reviews close to these ones) so I can include them here.

But I think it died.

You said we could request, so would you mind checking out my level Down Underground? It's my first level and I'm looking for advice as a creator, so even if you can't do a full in depth review anything would be appreciated. It's also F4F if you want to go that rout. Anyway, I read a couple of your reviews, and they seem great so far! Thanks for putting this kinda time into something to help the community.2010-09-12 22:19:00

But I think it died.

Actually, I kind of... ignored it.

It's true! I left the thread alone, but only because I thought it was pointless to have a review thread on such a small community. The PS3 I understand, with it's pages spammed by new levels, but ours rarely gets a full page of new levels. So I didn't think a review thread was needed.

Sorry.
