You know what I don't like, is when there is an obvious path but there is an invisible wall blocking it. | 2010-09-08 04:40:00 Author: shebhnt Posts: 414 |
Hmm from the list I'm gonna say invisible barriers. I seriously hate when the visual environment doesn't coherently correlate to the collision mesh, it's just dumb. It gets confusing especially in games where you otherwise need to explore to get hidden items and what not. Adding some: Quick Time Events... I think these are kind of a cop out to be honest. When used with the right effect it's tolerable but I don't think I ever played a QTE and thought OMG THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN. Especially worst QTE type things are having to mash a button as fast as you can... really? Why should I have to break my controller to beat the game? Health Regeneration - Love it and hate it, if that makes sense. You know what I mean, when your character will regenerate his health to full as long as he's not taking any immediate damage. You get used to it eventually and it seems to fit into the games, it also hastens the pace inbetween battles for better or worse, it's usually coupled with: Full Screen De-saturation / blur on health loss - Somewhat annoying and overused effect, universally accepted substitute for an HP counter. The interactive movie - I hate drawn out cut scenes in games. As epic as your storyline is, I'd rather feel like a part of it than just watch from the sidelines. Etc. | 2010-09-08 04:44:00 Author: Foofles Posts: 2278 |
Probably the 14th, being unable to swim Another thing I dislike is how much different are cut-scenes from in-game parts. We gotta fight to the death until our fingers go numb, but it's way shorter in cinematics. Like... you know, Aerith, in Final Fantasy VII... Why the hell didn't he use a Phoenix Down to resuscitate her ? | 2010-09-08 11:45:00 Author: Oddmania Posts: 1305 |
Grrrr Number 15, Chasm Deaths! That's happened to me so many times on Uncharted! | 2010-09-08 11:48:00 Author: Rhys125 Posts: 841 |
You forgot the most crucial part of the exploding barrel, it has to be RED. Anyway I vote for number 7 I hate it and love it, so much I made one in LBP. | 2010-09-08 12:22:00 Author: SR20DETDOG Posts: 2431 |
8. Invisible Barrier 17. Lame Tutorials (scribblenauts! It's unskippable for goodness sake, even on replays) The funniest one I keep seeing is: Door locks/shuts behind you + big empty arena + infinite ammo spawn. GEE, I wonder what is going to happen next?! | 2010-09-08 12:42:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |
I love exploding barrels. How can you not love them? Anyways, I hate invisible walls. I remember in Super Mario Sunshine, when you swam out past the hub city you just hit a wall and it sucked because you could see all the other areas on the horizon. I also hate timed missions or races. I don't like being put under that much pressure in a game. Escort missions also suck. I guess they can be alright sometimes like in Just Cause 2, but they mostly suck. | 2010-09-09 02:37:00 Author: Sack-Jake Posts: 1153 |
Well my favorite 2 are 1 double jump because i hate when i cant reach some parts in some games!!! | 2010-09-09 02:43:00 Author: shadow3596 Posts: 2442 |
14. Not only the fact that you can't swim, but you DIE WHEN YOU HIT THE WATER. Anyone play Skate 2? Water = Death. | 2010-09-09 02:47:00 Author: ShamgarBlade Posts: 1010 |
8 and 16 (invisble barriers and time trials). Plus the water one sorta bugs me, but not that much. It makes more sense to have water on a beach where your suppose to stay on the land, than lava! | 2010-09-09 02:53:00 Author: Testudini Posts: 3262 |
From the list, I'd have to say escort missions. Granted, this isn't so bad so long as the npc is competant, but most of the time they have all the survival instincts of a brain-damaged lemming, and only slightly more durability then one. Though one I've particularly grown to dislike that isn't on the list is the introduction of a villain that completely upstages the one that had ostentably been the main antagonist of the game at the near-end of the game (re: approximately 80% of JRPGs). Granted, this can be done well if there are some seeds for the reveal planted throughout the game and the reason for the villain remaining in the shadows up until then is a good one (see Bioshock), but most of the time you just end up with someone or something that came out of virtually nowhere at the last minute with an undeveloped background (nor time enough to improve on it) and a nebulous reason for fighting you. In many instances, this can come off as completely meaningless, and in general, it completely undermines the development of whatever antagonist the game had until that point, and in effect it may end up derailing the very plot of the game. | 2010-09-09 03:40:00 Author: Dapiek Absaroka Posts: 512 |

You know, that hadn't crossed my mind when I saw the OP but you're right, this is basically the focal plot element of every final fantasy game Escort / defend missions are definitely annoying. I grew to hate them ever since Natalya in goldenye | 2010-09-09 04:00:00 Author: Foofles Posts: 2278 |
Three words: "What the hell?" Take Silent Hill 4's Henry Townsend for example... | 2010-09-09 17:13:00 Author: The Gentleman Posts: 360 |
Like... you know, Aerith, in Final Fantasy VII... Why the hell didn't he use a Phoenix Down to resuscitate her ? In battles, when a player 'dies,' they're really just knocked out. Phoenix Downs don't necessarily bring a character back from the dead, they just wake them up. /rant Anyway, my most hated clich? has to be when there are unopenable doors... They don't even open when hit with an rpg. :L | 2010-09-09 17:42:00 Author: resistance1 Posts: 812 |
14. Not only the fact that you can't swim, but you DIE WHEN YOU HIT THE WATER. Anyone play Skate 2? Water = Death. REEL WATERZ!!1!!1!! Just kidding. But it does get annoying when your character randomly drowns standing up. :/ | 2010-09-09 22:15:00 Author: CyberSora Posts: 5551 |
Invisible walls, the inability to jump, and those first-person shooters where you cant see your legs. But steam's cool, I guess. :SH: | 2010-09-09 22:25:00 Author: ThePineapplizer Posts: 769 |
