The BBC is reporting that Sony are in talks to turn LittleBigPlanet "into a franchise that could mean spin offs including comics, cartoons, and action figures as well as a publishing platform itself for other brands' content."

i dont know whether this is a good or bad thing. I think advertising and promotion of other games/objects would be useful (who wouldnt want a massive coke level?!) but things like cartoons and toy dolls are a little extreme for the mainstream market.2008-10-24 19:20:00

NOOOOOOO! Saturday morning cartoons would be a very, very, very bad thing. Maybe if I owned stock or part of MM I would think differently but since I'm just a fan. NOOOOO! =)

Really, it's to be expected. This is Sony, remember? They're going to get in everything they can. Do I think it's a bad thing? ...Yeah. To some extent, sure, I'm willing to let them go with it. I'm sure we could all use some Sackpeople sitting beside our monitors (or at least most of us). Considering that the story mode's story is rather...unstorylike, I'm not sure how great a comic would be, exactly...

Sackboy in other games, however, would be fine. PAIN, for example. Sackboy fits in pretty perfectly in that scenario. In other games, as a bonus character or something like that...it should work fine.

I'm not exactly sure what the "publishing platform itself for other brands' content" means, aside from perhaps marketing material put into the game. I'm not sure that's a particularly bad thing. Because it'll be professional material in the game, it'll be good quality. Just with a moniker of whatever brand is on it. Considering the mass advertising you see everywhere in today's culture...kinda hard to get away from. Just best to exploit the advantages as possible.

Sackboy will be Sony's new mascot. They will take advantage of this to the very end.2008-10-24 21:56:00

Sackboy plush toys are already for sale at Play Asia, though they don't look really great and have a shipping date of December???

Hmmm... I can't really tell if this will be a good or bad thing. A cartoon would be probably a bunch of sackboys getting into trouble everywhere and then they'd probably say something cheesy like "oopsy-daisy". I think my head would explode if I watched that too much.grr2008-10-25 01:15:00

GOod points all around as always. I have to admit, I'd wear a Sackboy hoodie and be the evny of the apartment complex.

A publishing platform for other brands' content? What, like seeing Sackboy dressed up as Sephiroth, Kratos and Nariko? The horror! 2008-10-25 11:36:00

it would be cool if the advertising was levels on the servers. like different game developer made LBP levels. of course they could just buy a copy of LBP and do it without paying so maybe sony could put people's levels who pay for advertising in a section of their own and make the section so a lot of people would play them to give companies a reason to pay. it probably wouldn't happen but it would be cool if it did.

Things like this and to some extent, crossovers (so long as they don't get stupid) are good. A decent line of plushes (preferably customisable, like build a bear workshop, with your choice of material, face shape and accessories) would also be good.

Things like saturday morning cartoons would be baaaaad.

Meh, I don't really mind what Sony is doing. If it turns out great, then great! If it turns out bad, then oh well.2008-10-25 17:29:00

From a money making standpoint, I say do it a bit with other games with the LBP world. If I were them, I'd create a LittleBigPet game for the PSP where you can create your own pet and world they could create. It'd be great for the kids. They could also do a Mario Cart ripoff with great customization. I'm not saying I would buy those games, but if they want to make the next Mario, they would be smart to put that amazing art direction characters into other smaller games. Even if they were just on PSN.

I say make as mant LBP related things as they want. I want Sackboy to be a icon and in everyone's homes in one way or another. It could only benefit LBP in spreading the word.
Also i'm a sicko and would love to have merchandise to buy for my little girl as she likes watching me play (i think that's only because i made her that spongebob level though lol)

I wouldn't know what kind of new titles or expansions they would create, This game is already so complete! They would be able to add some new features but I think you can't make a LittleBigPlanet2 because what would there be to add?? only a few little things but not enough for a totally new title.

And about the comics and stuf, Bad idea, don't think a lot of people would buy them!

Trust me THERE WILL BE A LBP 2 and spin off's

Sony wouldn't be putting it's faith in LBP and Sackboy as they're mascot if they didn't plan on making him a household name and build on it's success
LBP2 could be fully 3D bit i think that would alienate a lot of people that would find it too confusing (especially the new younger fan base it will attract) but i could see a LBP2 using the same sort of system we are using now but that has 10 layers (or more) and a better camera system where the camera zooms in behind sackboy to allow for better views. With so many layers though i think they'd have to let you pan 360 degrees and zoom right in and out in create mode.
I personally though would like LBP2 to be in full 3D with the camera behind sackboy like Mario64 or later games.
I'm sure MM with their creativity could do 3D and still find a way to make it simple and intuitive using similar tools (and more) that we are using in LBP today

A Sackboy/LittlebigPlanet cartoon/thirty minute commercial in disguise, I have no problem with that, I was thinking that from the very first few trailers that were put out.

I think it's fair to say chances are looking good that LBP could wind up being a pretty popular product with a diverse audience.

I would exploit the living heck out of it if I was Sony too.

As long as the main course stays good (the inevitable game franchise it might inevitably become), this doesn't really affect me alot.

*Secretly dreams of a LBP Sackboy Pixar film*

I've been saying it for weeks now: there will be a sequel to LBP. I agree that I would like to see more layers (layers for the sake of layers really) and a "Create" mode that allows 360 degree camera coverage would be great too. However, I'm not so sure I agree with the idea of having a "chase cam" on Sackboy. While it sounds cool - thinking Mario 64 here - that would require an open-world style and I just don't know if that's what people are after.

LBP is great because there are usually a number or routes that take you to the finish yet there's still something very linear at work as well. In my opinion, going open-world would do to LBP what going 3-D did to Sonic: completely strip the franchise of everything that resembled the original.

Yeah i know what your saying, but I'm talking way down the line here.
MM isn't EA (with sequels out every year) and if there was to be a sequel I think it would be in 2-3 years from now, as I think the DLC will keep this game fresh for ages

I would say LB2 would most likely be the more layers one I was talking about, with better camera and more creation tools.
I think it will go 3D eventually as there is only so far you can go with the 2.5D thing i suppose. But i think that will be much further down the line in say 5-6 years and will be LBP3 (who knows, even the main launch title of the PS4).
That's how I see the future of this wonderful game anyway
But it's just my thoughts obviously

I see what you're saying and tend to agree that they might move in that direction. However, LBP:2 is more likely to be hitting the PS4 if you think about it.
