The Burning Platforming Tree
Archive: 31 posts
The Burning Platforming TreeOptimafrogg A basic platforming level, where you must save the Great Platforming Tree from being burnt to the ground. It features an original world with a lot of dynamic lighting, and beautiful locations based on ancient architecture. The unique look also comes with a great amount of obstacles, and platforming sections to keep you entertained throughout. It's been 1-2 player tested, and I would say it's around medium difficulty This is my second level here and most likely my last lbp1 level, due to the fact that I take forever to make levels. It really is my greatest one yet. I will hopefully post pictures by tonight, but please don't let that stop you from playing it. Edit: Saturday, September 11, 2010: Added Pictures http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/1305/aphoto7.jpg http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/2252/aphoto8.jpg http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/7350/aphoto9p.jpg http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/6502/aphoto10.jpg http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2973/aphoto11.jpg | 2010-09-07 02:51:00 Author: optimafrogg Posts: 98 |
Nice level. It has a good style to fit the theme. I liked the feel of the puzzles and such at the start and didn't notice anything big. The puzzles were nice, the statue with rock and all, there was a pillar a bit later on that I could move, but not all the way...but there didn't seem to be a reason for moving it (it was more a log than a pillar)At the first part of the water you have a spech bubble that is blank, just seemed out of place with your other ones. Got to the fire part and found the sliding platforms a tad evil, but made it through them. The infinate checkpoint may have saved me, but still made it more a challange of retrying versus not being killed. The part with the spinny grabs was not bad, but with the infinate check point down below it was a bit annoying running back up, maybe having it closer. The next check point was a bit far for the one before beig a bit back. The pully down was cool with the floating flames, but both that part and the next I was a little perplexed on what to do, including after the water ...I only guessed it was that way because on the pully down I tried going that way first before getting stuck. The paint gun at the end was nice to have...but was there somthing to shoot? I wanted a target. All in all a solid themed level with great puzzles, just tweaking it in some of the spawn points, some extra directions (if you feel like it), that blank bubble, a few non-infinates...but that is your call, it is a long level so... Oh that ejector rock to jump up did not lok quite as good as your other designs (but the other desings were really good)...and a point to that paint gun if you feel like it. That is my feedback, hope it helps a little. | 2010-09-07 09:34:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
Thanks for the feedback, I'll defiantly adjust some of that based on you feedback, I really appreciate it. Also the one speech bubble without the checkpoint was just to show what had happened, it wasn't supposed to say anything, and could you be a little more specific on which pillar (log) you were able to move so I can fix it? Also if you have any levels that need feedback, I would be more than happy to critique them. | 2010-09-08 00:03:00 Author: optimafrogg Posts: 98 |
It was a wooden pillar higher up before you jumped from the ruins. Not sure if it was an issue, or just a side thing to move for fun. The speech bubble did show what to do, but if you added a camera instead with a sound effect, and set the camera on a timer so it activated for a few seconds it would look as good as the rest of you level. Oh I hate swiming through spinning spikey things, but with your adding the point trail to them I actually enjoyed it. If you get the time my OK Choice levels need feedback. I have touched up on them tons of times now, but still have had no feedback...so I may have been making it worse for all I know. | 2010-09-08 03:20:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
What a fun level, I must say. I also like receiving a copy of Shane the Crane. Very nice. Some tough stunts though with the wheels and the fire pits and all. I would have liked that checkpoint moved closer so I wouldn't have had to go back through the little swingy bit 15 times. Great music choice for this too. Perfect. The rolly-tilting platforms were doozies, as were the floaty fire blobs. Hard, but really clever. I liked them. And cool statuary in a level is just a great bonus. I'm glad I saved that tree now and all the great platforming with it. If you'd give my level Flying Saucers From Mars a spin and tell me what you think, I'd really appreciate it. | 2010-09-08 03:31:00 Author: thanatos989 Posts: 248 |

Thanks for the clarification, but the only thing wrong with putting a regular camera is that I don't think it'll reach far enough, but I'll look into it. I'll also get to your level, hopefully before this weekend, but I'm super busy, but definitely expect it by Sunday. I also really appreciate your feedback thanatos, I think I'll have to put another checkpoint there, and I'll do that when I get the chance. Again, I'll try to get to your level by this weekend, but probably not until Saturday at the earliest. | 2010-09-08 05:26:00 Author: optimafrogg Posts: 98 |
You can get a regular camera to work by connecting it to a switch. I have one that shows a massive oldstyle jet by attaching a camera far away on a fixed pole and linking i on with a switch...but adding the crane or a blurb to it would also work, just empty speech bubbles seem incomplete. | 2010-09-08 09:11:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
Nice level. The lighting looked neat and the visuals are good too. The platforming is awesome thanks to some clever ideas you came up with like avoiding the fireballs while holding on to the descending sponge and wipe out all the flames with the water. The only frustrating part is the moving stair platforms with flames since it's kinda hard to get up. Overall I gave it 4 stars. | 2010-09-08 21:25:00 Author: JustinArt Posts: 1314 |

Omg great level. | 2010-09-08 21:29:00 Author: Unknown User |
This is a fun level with good visuals, and some nice inventive platforming challenges as well. Some suggestions and comments: - There was some massive slowdown which started when I climbed the "fire ladder" (don't know how else really to describe it) - The descent grabbling onto the sponge and avoiding the fireballs was frustrating - the fireballs moved too quickly for me to see them in time and avoid them. I felt like I got lucky when I made it - Loved the way you used the water to extinguish the flames - you should have done this for the whole tree and made the exit at the top of the tree so you can see what it looks like when not on fire | 2010-09-09 12:13:00 Author: thor Posts: 388 |

I'm sorry you had trouble getting up those fire stairs (I know I have trouble sometimes), but I don't think I'm gonna change that any time soon (unless I get alot of complaints) because it needs a bit of challenge in my opinion. The fireballs can't move any slower (or faster) because of the properties of the floaty material (maybe when LBP2 comes out I can change the gravity or sumthin) and the slowdown is due to the large amount of moving objects, and the fire, which unless you have any suggestions, I can't really fix. I usually have a bit of slowdown there myself, but it's still very playable, I'm not sure how much you had, but if you could get through it, it shouldn't have been a big deal. It's also interesting how you mention that water bit at the end, because I originally planned for you to extinguish the falmes as you went up, and then swim back down the way you came to exit, but it seemed pointless to have to swim back down (seeing as how nothing is in the front layer) If either of you have any levels you want me to critique I'll get to them this weekend. | 2010-09-10 01:56:00 Author: optimafrogg Posts: 98 |

I think the fireballs could be fixed by embedding a piece of metal (which you set on fire also) into their centre. This will balance out some of the peach floaty, reducing their upwards acceleration. Yeah the slowdown wasn't too bad... things I find slowdown is caused by are - Lights - Very large dynamic objects - Too many dynamic objects What you can do is - Reduce the number of lights - Make sure as many pieces are glued to dark matter as possible - Use proximity sensors to only emit objects/move objects when you are close to them Though it might not be worth all the effort for this part, unless there is something obvious like the whole tree is not connected to dark matter. Could you play either my Cardboard Box level or my Cake Survival level, in my sig. Thanks | 2010-09-10 10:24:00 Author: thor Posts: 388 |
I have played your level and it is very good, combined bundle the gameplay of puzzles and the history and this has been fascinating, i congratulate you on the work that you did, it has seemed to me to be very long and it is almost impossible with the thermometer that in many occasions does that our histories see smaller than we wanted, and nevertheless you combined well these elements, my only suggestion would be that in some zones you were putting a bit more of light since in occasions it comes it is necessary to be a bit complicated for that you do not know that to do but for everything else very well, i have liked very much the bird of fact you a photo publishes with her. I have given you 4 :star:'S I wait could play to my new level WOOD WORLD https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=34593-Wood-World-(with-VIDEO)-*SPOTLIGHT* and i would like to know your opinion. First, let me start by saying how amazing the visuals are, everything looks incredible. From the moment I popped out of that checkpoint I was amazed at how good everything looked. I really liked the unstable pillar that makes the platform fall down, that was a very cool idea. It took me a few tries to successfully swim through the spinning spike things. I got stuck in between the two pillars where the creature bubble is located before I went and activated the next checkpoint so that was kind of annoying, but now I know to go right first. I loved the statue that was balancing the rock on his shoulder that part was awesome. The spike block on the glass track was a very cool idea. At the part with the rotating sponge that leads to a whole section of them, there is a column I could jump to, but nothing up there. Maybe throw a few points up there or something cause it was fun trying to reach it. I thought the floating fire ball part was just plain evil at first, it must have taken me 15 tries to get it the first time through, but I played this level a second time and made it through first try. I loved this level, its hard to find anything negative to say about it, great visuals and great gameplay. 5 stars | 2010-09-11 02:06:00 Author: Unknown User |
Added Pictures Edit: Level Changes- 1. Made the fireball section easier (fireballs are slower) 2. Added another crane in the roots of the tree 3. Added a checkpoint before the fire wheels | 2010-09-11 23:47:00 Author: optimafrogg Posts: 98 |

I'm not sure what column you were talking about, but I'm sure I'll find it eventually though, and I'm glad you brought up the problem with the creature bubble, I'll make sure that you activate the checkpoint through a motion switch or something. I'm glad you enjoyed it, do you have a level that needs any feedback, I can't guarantee I'll get to it this week but, I will eventually. | 2010-09-12 18:25:00 Author: optimafrogg Posts: 98 |
wow! great level, has some awesome visuals and unique challenges. I did however get stuck at in the crack of the broken pillar touching the standing pillar after the spike wheels under water. I just had to kill myself so it wasn't a huge deal. And then i got stuck at the part with the statue , not sure what I was supposed to do there. I will try it again to see if I can get passed it. but could you please leave feedback on my level Farmageddon!!(Bomb Survival)! | 2010-09-12 21:54:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
I knew about the pillars, I'm glad you reminded me about that, however you are the first one to get stuck there, you were supposed to grab the statue's hand (there was green sponge attached) and it would cause the rock to break the door. I thought it was straight forward, but if I have similar complaints I will adjust it, but for now I think I'm gonna leave it the way it is. I'll get to you level ASAP | 2010-09-13 00:21:00 Author: optimafrogg Posts: 98 |
Hey Optimafrogg, I tried your level today, and I really enjoyed it! The visuals are top notch, and the platforming is fun, and varied. Nice! The puzzles are right on too. I don't really have any complaints about it, so it's hard to give any constructive feedback. Great work!! Could you give me some feedback on my Beneath The Machine (Pinball). Thanks. | 2010-09-14 22:00:00 Author: smasher Posts: 641 |
The lighting looks great. Some nice characters; I'm really digging greatwood's 'stache! Very nice use of decorations and lights. (The swingy-thing was decorated! A nice touch.) In the first underwater section a nice long score-bubble combo leads the player to where he should go. Nice. I don't know what those trapezoidal beasts are, but they're cool. You've got a knack for decorations. I like the Man with the rolling stone. Nice little puzzler. I couldn't do the 2P...I tried to 1P it, but no luck. The decorations are fantastic...I don't think I can say that enough! Hey! A secret submerged cache of bubbles for those of us who like to explore! The sliding spikes took me a few tries. I like the way the Fiery rocks dissappear on the tilting platform. The lions blow bubbles. Brilliant. Like others have said, it's hard to find anything bad... I got stuck beside a pillar once... Would you try my level and tell me what you think? It's called "Castle". (You'll be better off searching for "@Jayzhee") | 2010-09-15 00:58:00 Author: Unknown User |
Thanks Smasher and Jayzhee, I really appreciate your nice comments, I'll try to get to your levels ASAP, but I'm pretty busy so it may not be until next week | 2010-09-15 04:12:00 Author: optimafrogg Posts: 98 |
Ok just played your level, and here's what I thought: Lighting was great, and the jungle like visuals mixed with the stone and tree elements was very beautiful. Sometimes there was a lack of camera angles while running through beautiful scenes, so I think you should let the player see more of what you worked to create visually. Gameplay was nice, there were some great, unique platforming ideas in there that were lots of fun. I didn't like the moving fire staircase, it was a bit frustrating and just didn't flow well with the rest of the bouncy, swingy gameplay you had going. Loved how you included so many elements of LBP into the level, such as swimming, swinging, and jumping. I noticed a few visible LED's, might want to cover those up with materials. There was one prize bubble that I couldn't seem to get at, I might be missing something or it was inaccessible. I didn't like the inconsistency of dangerous water vs. safe water, might want to give players a heads up as to which water is dangerous. Overall, I really enjoyed the level and gave it :star::star::star::star: and a <3 Please play my Spy Chronicles Part 2 for the F4F. Thanks! | 2010-09-21 03:04:00 Author: wolverinebball2 Posts: 55 |
Hi, I played the level this morning. The good new is that your level is great, and the bad one that I have not too many complains, so I can not give really usefull feedback The visuals are awesome, with a good ambientation and use of lights. The gameplay is nice too. The only thing I would criticise is that you use too often the gameplay of a circle you have to grab to bridge a gap. It's a very classic resource, and you make an abusive use of it imo Anyway :star::star::star::star::star: from me. Could you play my level "The tanks factory 2" and criticise it? Ok that's good, I thought your level was really well put together. It probably should have been included in the real spotlight instead of the "also included from the showcase section." Thanks for the feedback on my level, glad you liked it so much! And no constructive criticism either! Thanks! | 2010-09-26 19:53:00 Author: wolverinebball2 Posts: 55 |
Very nice level. Nice lighting and cool visuals! Some tricky elements but not too hard. Keep up the good work! | 2010-09-27 15:09:00 Author: (___NEO___) Posts: 206 |

Hi mate! Played this a while ago and I must say few things about it. First of all, in pictures you posted it might seem that the lighting brings great atmosphere. Well the thing is that it doesn't. You put the radition of leds (or what ever you used) too short and their brightness too high, making it seem unfinished. In the parts you didn't have this problem you just didn't use any kind of lighting. You used ''Mag the mechanic's heads'' well as trees, but you would have made them a bit larger, or then change the camera so, that you can only see the hair. The puzzle gameplay was made well, but not perfectly. There was no challenge in this level. It seems to be made around the visuals and visuals only. There were enough bubbles but it kinda disturbed that you put them all close to each other in the different parts of the level. Like you put 100 in one part and second part has no bubbles at all. Visuals were good and the trees were still well made. I played this with the friend, and 2 player section was good. But then this kinda made me sad- just one price in the end of the puzzle? You would have put some bubbles there too, or am I missing something? Well level has the good multiplayer gameplay, it doesn't really make it any harder to play with a friend. And it's not too challenging for newbies or people who suck. 4 stars for nice level. Keep it up. As F4F level, would you mind to give feedback on my level the Marshy Dungeon of Mysteries? I really would appreciate it. | 2010-10-06 13:24:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
Thanks FreeAim, It's nice to get some original genuine feedback, as opposed to people telling me the same things over and over again, even if it was a bit blunt. Some of the things you mentioned though, are pretty hard to fix at this point, such as the tree tops, and I don't really quite know what you mean by the "radition" the of lights, but I hadn't really noticed anything weird about the lights, I'll have to go back and look at them. But many of things mentioned, like the challenge, I will take into account for my next level, (I wasn't planning on making another in LBP1, but I might due to the delay), and in actuality I had to make a few spots easier due to complaints, people don't like challenge. | 2010-10-11 00:55:00 Author: optimafrogg Posts: 98 |
With their radition I ment the length of area they are lighting. They lighted just a litle circle around themselves, and it wasn't so cool. Just a reminder for you to give feedback! | 2010-10-19 12:49:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
