Enter the 36 Chambers Disc 1NinjaMicwz Fatal flying Guillotine: I've always wanted to do a ninja level, so here it is, Ninja-style. video by Gilgamesh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbAXtWroCmQ HD video by Trindall http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lllwoAhDRlg Alot of work and expirimentation has gone into the aesthetics, architecture, and detail to give the level a very unique and pleasing look, but the focus here is platforming, gameplay, variety, fun, replay value and score optimization. I'm hoping it's a hit with people who like to keep #1 on the scoreboard. There's technically not 36 Chambers in total, but it's named after the debut album from my favorite group; the Wu-Tang Clan... I thought it was fitting, and although I thought 36 would be too repetitive and long for one level, there may end up being more, but LBP2 is looming. Hope you enjoy. | 2010-09-06 19:14:00 Author: Unknown User |
Hello, I was the first person to play this (other than you). I'm the kind of person that likes to keep #1 on the scoreboard, so it was no wonder that I loved this level! Tough levels are one of my favorite kinds, but it's pretty hard to make a challenging level fun, but you succeeded! Awesome work, I rated the level :star::star::star::star::star: and tagged it 'Brilliant'. | 2010-09-06 23:40:00 Author: X-FROGBOY-X Posts: 1800 |
Same here Frogboy so I had to take the lead on the scoreboard . Very, very fun level. Lots of new game play mechanics in this one. How the hell you come up with this stuff? Nice job hiding this from me jk. 5 stars and a <3 for sure. Also will try my best to keep the top score . edit: Love the new areas. Those ninja scared me at first cause they weren't there the 1st playthrough. Also like the other new addition to the level. Good stuff! | 2010-09-07 01:02:00 Author: L1GhTmArE Posts: 519 |
Well, I guess I should've realized this level would be hard. Misjudging the difficulty I had left my ninja skills behind and so at first found this very challenging...however once I got the hang of your type of ninja puzzler it became a fun platformer that required some thought before progressing. Gameplay was varied, visuals were interesting and clean...overall, 5/5! | 2010-09-07 02:39:00 Author: Lockstitch Posts: 415 |
thanks you guys... thanks for the support with the initial publish frog and lightmare. i tried publishing it a couple times and kept getting 1 starred right away, and everyone's levels seem to be on a slowwww play count crawl lately. thanks for checking it out Lockstitch. I'm still a bit rusty, and focusing on gameplay over story and puzzles is new for me, so i'm glad you played through the difficulty and liked it; always good to get a positive response from whoever's making the best levels at the time, heh. i wanted it ninja-core, but not ridiculous with pinhead platform jumps, and disappearing megaman blocks. | 2010-09-07 05:32:00 Author: Unknown User |
OMG! I saw you published it yesterday but for some strange reasons I thought you had only published a locked backup. I loved the look of the chambers, really brilliant and fresh. I will play it today for sure! | 2010-09-07 06:35:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
Played it and got the 2nd score. I loved the level, loved the visuals, and loved the Urban Ninja Dojo atmosphere. The gameplay is really cool (first room wasn't meant to be easy?) and really ninja-esque. Loved every second of it, especially the fact that you can't die cheap to have an easy race to a checkpoint near the doors. 5 stars and a heart man! | 2010-09-07 19:36:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
Wow.... I didn't even know you published a new one! Will go in there and check it out tonight. EDIT - Ok, played it..... I SUCK! Wow, I love the level.... but I think I died about 100 times. I'm determined to go back in tonight now that I know how go get past everything and try for a high score. Man, there are some ingenious sections in there. | 2010-09-07 23:51:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
Great level NinjaMic! had fun playing it, a lil hard but enjoyable. :star::star::star::star::star: and <3! | 2010-09-08 03:22:00 Author: Joey Posts: 758 |
thanks ccub and troph. i think i underestimated the difficulty, but hopefully it feels fluid and doable... glad you saw it through, cuz. l1ghtmare and I are 3 and 2 right now, and big surprise, good ol shenoa77 has #1 again by a few thousand. i won't be able to beat her without a perfect play. i actually still have fun playing my own level after testing it to death... yay, mission accomplished. | 2010-09-08 10:53:00 Author: Unknown User |
Darn you. I can safely say that never again will I go trough that; not because I hated, but because I care not for the scoreboard, but I do for being able to finish levels. However, I very much loved the experience. I had loads of fun, loved the aesthetics and specially the clever sections. 5 stars both ingame and here, and a heart | 2010-09-08 11:22:00 Author: Keldur Posts: 628 |
Actually, the second time I played through it I breezed through, only dying a couple of times. It was difficult to tell how I did with the score because of the scoring issue... There are actually two sets of high scores that flip back and forth.... But I think i got around 76,000. I was top score on one of the servers last night. | 2010-09-08 12:04:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
err that's weird ccub. i know the server was temporarily down last night, but i've never had that happen i don't think. let the boy play it sometime; i'd be curious to see if he digs it despite the difficulty. thanks for the good words, keldur. nice to hear from somone who did arguable the very best ninja/islands level in the community. it was definitely levels like that, and even the oldest of old school ninja obstacle courses that inspired this... i'm a junkie for anything feudal. i hope you get bored enough to punish yourself again sometime though, heh. especially since i think i'm finally done doing the finishing touches and added a new chamber early into the level to give it a little more spice, but keep the flow. i'm totally maxed now, so i upped the timer a little and think i'll be now. thanks all who've played it... only 100 so far, but that's better than my last | 2010-09-08 16:21:00 Author: Unknown User |
Awesome level. It takes some skill to get the timing right on some of these challenges, but overall it's very fun. Love the style also. I recorded a video of the level: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbAXtWroCmQ Cool stuff, :star::star::star::star::star: and <3'd. | 2010-09-08 17:44:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
if i could thank your post more than once, i'd thank it a million times. you're the man, gil - a bro's bro. ediy: haha wow you kicked the crap out of the level, just watched. you play the grab ceiling section better than me. | 2010-09-08 17:53:00 Author: Unknown User |
There was a lot of luck involved in that run. I don't usually pass that smoothly in all of those sections. But hey, I won't complain. It makes it better looking for the video! | 2010-09-08 18:01:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
really had a blast with this level ninj... i played it a few minutes after you messaged me yesterday morning. so i went over and had at it. took me a while, lots of dying and lots of laughs as well (those ninja sound effects are hilarious, especially the one at the top of the wheel when you get squished), but i finished on my first attempt. i'm not sure what happened on my first run though. it didn't have all the score bubbles that it had the second time i played it (today) and a whole section of it i hadn't seen in my first play through (the section with the series of jumps as spiked cylinders fly at you.) it's the kind of difficulty that doesn't take away from the fun of playing. my first attempt i didn't even come close to beating the race, so i came in dead last at 1400 + points. but on my second attempt i beat the race so i came in the top fifteen. by my fourth attempt i was #5 or 6 just a shade under 80,000 pts. still have yet to find all prize bubbles. that's next on my lbp to-do list later today. i really loved it, a platformer that's also beautiful to look at. thanks for giving me the heads up. it's my new weird addiction. | 2010-09-09 12:34:00 Author: nirvana Posts: 9 |
This was a fun level to play through for a few different reasons. Initially the level presents many obstacles that are fairly hard to get through, offering instant death for poor timing or lack of aerial precision. Getting to the end is a challenge all by itself and can be daunting for players who don't go into the more challenging platformer levels. The difficulty level on this one is quite high but not in a real unfair way. This is hard in the manner that you need to learn the environment and have good hand-eye coordination more that it is hard due to poor level creation or set design. Like the excellent game Demon?s Souls it has a steep learning curve but once you get the handle of it things aren?t really that hard. I do see the difficulty of the initial rooms and the level in general to be a large stumbling block for many casual players though. There isn?t any indication in the level description about just what the player is getting into. Once you do get to the end and see the score distribution you can see that there is a wide range for being able to compete on the scoreboard. Probably since the level is new and the top 15 haven?t been filtered to the best of the best but it does feel that there is a fair chance for even those not mastering the spinning jump to compete. Throughout these two goals the level is filled with a consistent and interesting theme. I really enjoyed the liveliness of the rooms, the constant linear and angular touches that really keep the sense of movement and tension constant. The set design is excellent with both the artistic and creative decoration and innovative structure that you?ve done so well in previous levels. The pacing is a bit uneven I thought as some rooms can be completed very quickly while others can drag on an on which became more and more noticeable as I got better and better with the different obstacles. The sixth chamber with the raising/lowering segments is the most notable part of this. Compared to the length of the previous and latter chambers this plays as if it was two or three chambers all in one. There are three distinct segments to this on room, running along the bottom, swinging to the door key switch and then swinging back again, while other rooms have only a single segment. This chamber does seem to take up the majority of the playtime proportional to the rest and gives a slightly imbalanced feel to this part of the level. The music doesn?t get in the way of the level and is usually overplayed by the SFX which you?ve really implemented well to add another layer of experience to the play. The crashing, thumping and banging do well to increase the sense of threat while the ninja based SFX add to the humour and enjoyment. I really liked that while you?ve come up with a fairly straightforward if tricky level it is still a very different platformer than many out there. This doesn?t fit very well into the run/jump mold and exercises platforming elements that don't get much attention. The launch pads, the swinging and rotating grab circles are usually gimmicks but you?ve put them into a cohesive and challenging level that gives these elements their time in the spot light. I think that there are still two prize bubbles I haven?t figured out yet but when I was playing through earlier I was more intent on the scoreboard competition than in secret hunting but all the more reason to try the level a few more times in the future. I?m hoping that the sticker that will activate the sticker switch at the start because the level badge sticker you get in the middle, even though being of the exact design as the sticker switch, doesn?t do the trick. I suspect that there is a trick to it all however and I've just got to figure it all out. (That and the prize at the end which may be only a multiplayer reward.) Good work on this level. thanks for the really detailed review, trindall... and glad you loved it, nirvana i'm really having fun playing this too, even though i'll restart 15 timnes then give up on beating shenoa's score everytime heh i agree about the 6th chamber, trindall. i think of it like Voltiare's H.A.T.E. level with the final chamber being an epic monster wheel, and then a little cool down segment to unplug glados after. i'd like one or two more rooms before it (i added that extra segment, after removing a different subpar one, that nirvanagirl mentioned for pacing and balance) that have a 1/3rd and 2/3rds length/difficulty balance to build up to it. if i come up with anything good i'll try and therm glitch them in. the nice thing about the compartmentaluized design of the chambers is i can slide them inbetween the others and change the order without much hassle. | 2010-09-09 19:16:00 Author: Unknown User |
i watched the vid and i have to say: i will defenitely give it a try asap .... the vid rocks! I'm looking forward playing it ... | 2010-09-09 21:58:00 Author: (___NEO___) Posts: 206 |
I've been playing this level off an on for the last few days. It is still fun to go through even after my fifty or so attempts. I like the changes and updates you put into the level with the kanji on the walls to the additional stickers of the master pumpkin-headed guy. I'm also glad to see that the sticker switch in the beginning is working now with the updated level badge sticker. I kept playing through initially looking for the correct sticker to use and just thought I was missing some complexly hidden area or sticker in plain sight. I also see that there are far better and determined players than myself who've racked up some amazing scores on the scoreboard while at the same time the overall level rating has dipped a bit. No doubt the challenge of the level is the main reason for the decline but that seems inevitable with the current state of the LBP level rating system. (If only the rating of those who complete the level had a higher weight than those who do not, but that is how it is.) Congratulations on another atmospheric and challenging level. | 2010-09-15 19:44:00 Author: Trindall Posts: 297 |

I also see that there are far better and determined players than myself who've racked up some amazing scores on the scoreboard while at the same time the overall level rating has dipped a bit. thanks for the update and the up. it definitely took me 100 or so tries or more to get the #1 spot back from shenoa77, and i still run through it for fun too; i think it's my best stuff so far. No doubt the challenge of the level is the main reason for the decline but that seems inevitable with the current state of the LBP level rating system. (If only the rating of those who complete the level had a higher weight than those who do not, but that is how it is.) the rating got decimated in the 1st 100 plays... it was 5 for about 50 or so. it had a decent little run, got to page 4 on it's last day. i'm happy i got a handful of people who loved it and were addicted... evilpanda told me it was a masterpiece, and he's more or less the king of obstacle races with amazing visuals; so i guess i did good enough I'm also glad to see that the sticker switch in the beginning is working now with the updated level badge sticker. I kept playing through initially looking for the correct sticker to use and just thought I was missing some complexly hidden area or sticker in plain sight. i kept re-etching my wu-tang logo for the icons til i got it 100% perfect and reprizing the sticker lol sorry. shouldda posted an update here i guess. any wu fans here (me and uhhh me i think) can ace the level for the W and the W with the 36 chambers original album font in it. i love how it came out. | 2010-09-16 00:28:00 Author: Unknown User |
Hi NinjaMicWiz I played it today, I died today and I stood up today, and I replayed it today :-) Oh boy - you gave me a hard time here. Of course there are a lot of frustrating obstacles, especialy the rooms where you have to pass a long distance until you are able to activate the door-opener. If there is one real negative thing, I choose the roome with the raising plattform - if you are very high and get killed, you have to wait until the plattform is down again. So, if you're heading for a good score, this room is a crack-in-time when you fail a lot - I don't know if I'm right cause I just played it 2 times: this room is also tricky due to the fact, that the rotating flames are never ever at the same place when you are on the same hight - it's even more challenging cause there is no pattern while going up - you have to look and act based on the current flame-position. This change is pretty cool cause it's some sort of unpredictable challenge. It's a pitty that this level has a low star-rating. But nevertheless it's a 5-star level!!! Great execution of a amazing idea! Just brilliant.... | 2010-09-20 16:55:00 Author: (___NEO___) Posts: 206 |
Kool level. I'm a hip-hop head and big fan of wu too. thanks for the sticker, and im gonna have to try to ace this for the other stickers | 2010-09-21 04:46:00 Author: Unknown User |
thanks, chewy. glad there's another wu fan on and into it. i would kill for some transparent sticker service on the wutang logos i made. if you never ace it, i'll send 'em to you. thinking about a conveyor survival spin off ala canyon jazz by mrspoonylegs called wu-tang forever. | 2010-09-22 16:54:00 Author: Unknown User |
I really need to find some time to play LBP so I can play cool looking levels like this. Love the aesthetics! | 2010-09-22 17:19:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |
mrsupercomputer 'wanting' to play your level is as good as most people actually playing it, so it's the thought that counts. played the new mulberry woods recently, by the way... jaw dropping. | 2010-09-22 20:44:00 Author: Unknown User |
Saw you on the spotlight and came running. I have one adjective for this level: TUNED. I loved that the hint on how to move from room to room is a somatic cue, with no text. I frequently ran through obstacles (like the flame swing elevator) in full concentration, got the cue, and transitioned to the door before I actually thought, "Door's open". It's cool that you did so much visuals without stickering. It reminds me of some of Keldur's more epic layer-based scenery. Cameras mounted on the grinder obstacle were a nice touch. It added to the sense of menace. That said, the flaming hammer in the last room of the first floor finished me off. I could bypass it with much difficulty...I remember getting to the second floor, dying on something I hadn't had the chance to take a good look at, then watching my score tick down...and knowing I had to pass THE HAMMER. I eventually called it for time...I had less than 200 on the clock, and no hope of success. I'll be back. 5 Big Ones and hearted. You've had an author heart from me since Lost Idols 0. | 2010-09-27 14:46:00 Author: coyote_blue Posts: 422 |
thanks coyote. i was hoping you'd check it out... you and keldur specifically were two people i wanted insight from as fellow disciples of the east. i'm glad the cue worked. i really am trying my hardest to keep gameplay flowing in what i build now, and i know in levels i play, i absolutely hate when text bubbles or door-open-pans interrupt my momentum, point combos, or result in me dying mid-jump. i think, unless i build another false idols, i don't think i'm ever going to fill a level with speech bubbles again. shouldda listened to jackofcourse years ago. the aerial feel of the special attacks in your series is present here, if you didn't notice. | 2010-10-01 17:42:00 Author: Unknown User |
Absolutely, but with more player control. Took several deaths at first, but the flings are very precise, and I like that momentum-based platforming much more than wheel flings. Hope to see more along this vein. As for text - we're entering a brave new world for that soon enough, aren't we? It's gonna be tough for me to strike a balance, but text is like anything else - a tool. You're absolutely right that Enter the 36 Chambers doesn't need it. The red flash is textual all by itself. | 2010-10-02 05:18:00 Author: coyote_blue Posts: 422 |
