Flying Saucers From Mars (remake) *SPOTLIGHTED*thanatos989
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=23420It's 1955 and your psychiatrist tells you there's no such thing as men from Mars, that you've been watching too many science fiction movies. Won't he be surprised when the flying saucers ATTACK. Can you defeat the Martians and save the planet, or will you end up as canned food?
This wacky platformer is my tribute to the "B" sci-fi flicks of the 50s, and is a remake of an earlier level I made. It's medium difficulty level made for up to 4 players, though there are a couple rather tricky spots. Bypass switches activate after so many deaths allowing players the option of skipping a nasty part

OK, here we go! I haven't played the first one, so I'm going to look at this by it's own merits. Also, this could be a little weird, since I just published my own homage to 50's UFO movies a couple weeks ago. LOL

I love everything about the opening. The little UFO hovering outside the psychiatrist's office, the credits, all the way to the apartment, where the action starts. Your eye for detail is incredible!

The first tough jump is a doozy. Maybe something could be done with the camera angle to show you where you're going when you jump down into the building. I didn't use the bypass switch, but I thought about it. I liked that it was there.

Your aliens look great!

I wouldn't mind an explanation for how I managed not to get processed. They herd you onto the ship, and suddenly you are a threat. Why? Just me nitpicking over story.

The little puzzle on the ramps? Brilliant. Simple and elegant, and I love the hidden door you emerge from.

Whoa! Little rolly thing to make me jump higher! Never seen anything like that!

Really interesting use of the three layers with the spiked pillars! Trickier than it looked!

The Martians talking in the control room. Priceless!

The robot with the microchip! Awesome!

I love an askew scoreboard!

All in all, I absolutely loved this level! It was great fun from beginning to end, with terrific visuals and some really original gameplay elements. My biggest problem was a minor hiccup in the story, which was quickly forgotten as the level got more fun and engaging as it went! Brilliant job! :star::star::star::star::star: and a big <3!

I tried really hard not to compare this to my own Invasion of the Sack Men From Space!, but I think you'll find that we took drastically different approaches to a very similar idea when you F4F me on it!

Jsut played this and I had a blast. Fun, funny, well paced, not easy neither hard,... I could go on, but I just want you to get the main idea. Your level is awesome, and I know what I'll be playing again when some friends join me at my pod.2010-09-05 10:40:00

I'm excited to play a creation by someone who appreciates a good Rocket Crab.

I'll go for some play-by-play feedback. Writing this as I play the level:

<start>
I broke something on this guy's desk and he got mad at me... nice.
I like that the entrance is disguised as a clock
Just walked past the theater. Very cool story telling so far.
Wow, my house is pretty nice. It seems I live on a floor in a W hotel.
noooooooooooooooo my apartment
<checkpoint>
Missed the last jump... looks a little like I could land on the brown platform.
It took me a few tries, but I figured out where to go in this first obstacle.
So far I really like it. I appreciate a good hanging obstacle.
<checkpoint>
Why are all these people tilting their heads to the side?
Kinda weird that they're heads are tilting up, but their eyes are looking down at me. Creepy.
Hahaha, nice aliens. They plan to eat me?
<checkpoint>
I'm on an alien ship.
Weird, I got killed while hidden behind a layer at the start of the conveyor belt.
I pulled this thing on the wall and it moved the pod. I'm not sure what that's for.
<checkpoint>
Hmm, I wonder why they made a processor destruct switch in the first place.
The jumps between these floating platforms are kinda tricky.
Ah maybe not that bad... made it on the 4th try.
<checkpoint>
Destruct switch!
I found a block with what appears to be a yellow "F" on it
I put it under a light and it turned blue, but I'm not sure what this means.
It took me a little while to figure out this rolling thing, but awesome, very cool idea.
<checkpoint>
This spike jumping is a new one. Nothing like this in the MM levels.
I'm not sure I like this spike jumping obstacle.
Ah, maybe it's not that bad, just figured it out.
<checkpoint>
This spinning wheel looks cool, but initial attempts have proved unsuccessful.
Oooo I like these things, another interesting obstacle.
Got through the second one... but there's another!
nooooooo, failure
Made it.
<checkpoint>
Awesome, a robot!
I'm not sure I want to let this 3rd thing out of the cell.
<checkpoint>
Pretty morbid scene over here with this guy's head poking out of a can.
I killed these red things and they came back! Lame.
Or maybe that was the destroy switch.
Ohhhh, this is the main destruct button.
I'm a little upset that I can't pull these aliens out of their chairs.
I suppose making them explode works.
<checkpoint>
Missed movie reference opportunity here: "I have GOT to get me one of THESE" -Will Smith
Awesome, this robot rules. I really hope he will fly me to the exit now.
mmm donuts.
Scoreboard on a crashing UFO = AWESOME

Very good level overall. I like the story, presentation, obstacles, difficulty, pretty much everything. The one complaint I might have is that it's fairly long. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but a lot of times I just want a quick level in LBP.

Great feedback guys. I'm overwhelmed. Thanks.

Okay, I fixed a bunch of things.
First, I tweaked the first elevator coming down so that the elevator doesn't go back up with more than two players if one player jumps off early. This was an annoying feature that I thought I had fixed, but playing with 4 people last night showed me that wasn't the case.

I also managed to place a piece of theck material behind the screen when you enter the food processing conveyor room. The way that whole thing works is that the people are emitted two at a time with a rod joining them. They have a small piece at their feet to keep them upright. This means that the conveyor is two thick layers thick, but I don't want the sackboy to go on the middle layer, just the front. Anyway, you can layer shift back now and die before you come onto the conveyor.

I also noticed that everyone grabs the recall switch for the pod. I originally thought that if someone jumped out of the pod while it was going up that the pod must be able to come back down. But since there was confusion here, I put the recall on a piston and had it out of reach. Now when the pod goes up the first time the recall comes down. If you jump down for any reason, you can also recall the pod to go back up.

I added a quick explanation for why the food processor didn't convert him to canned food. He's too short.

And finally, I was never really happy with the diploma in the shrink's office, so I made a sticker with the degree coming from Sack State University. Before it was just a bunch of cross hatching to indicate writing. But I figured I spent the time making tiny "Now Showing" and "Coming Soon" signs I could also make one for the diploma.

Thanks for the feedback of "The Hero Chronicles LV7 Dragon Ruins". That's a funny level you made. The visuals looked cleaned and the gameplay is bit challenging but a lot fun. I really enjoy the ending of the level mostly because of the laugh out loud moments and the level is also well decorated with stickers. The only thing I could think of that could be fixed is area where you battle the enemies that has 2 brains. The rotating circles around the enemy got me stuck. Overall great level. 5 stars.2010-09-06 18:01:00

Hey Thanatos! I gave this a go last night and it was a lot of fun. I loved all the humor - especially the sack state university sign, the 'oh I hope he doesn't push this button' part, and the donuts. I'm not sure this was intended, but something else that was funny to watch was when I turned off the machine on the conveyor belt. The humans kept going through and started to pile up

Your designs are really good, as always! I like the fact that all of your characters, furniture, houses, vehicles, etc, have your own design signature on them. It's like being able to recognize an artists work without checking for a signature on the bottom right of the painting. I liked what you did in the spinning wheel area. For whatever reason I didn't have a problem in that area this time. However, I did die tons of times during the spinning electric spikes. It was nice to have a frustrated button option, but of course, I didn't use it!

I would suggest one thing - and this is me being picky. When you're first taken up into the space ship, the player can easily fall back down by simply walking off the back layer. You could avoid this by emitting the floor as soon as the elevator is up, or you could just leave it go because it was kind of cool to see everything in a 'night time' setting.

I got second place on your score board, but I think with some practice I could compete with your score Great job! I gave it 5 stars and a heart

OK, as promised I checked it out...First thing I got a kick out of, the degree from "Sack State university"...loved the detail and the opening sequence....My 9 y.o. son noticed that when you grabbed the items in the shrink's office, he says "Hey that was expensive!",.very funny. Good idea giving an option to skip the first attack....I had to skip it after about 20-25 tries....I must say that was a real challenge. My son got stuck behind the people as we were trying to get on the spaceship, but that part looked great and i loved the transition into space. I think my favorite part of the level was the "vacuum tube"! That was unexpected and just alot of fun to do. Good work inserting tongue in check comedy into the level, that always improves a level IMO. I felt that the ending was very creative the way you had the scoreboard crash down.....it was unexpected and very creative. I love when levels surprise you with unexpected things, especially those that you have never seen before on LBP - good job with it. I gave you 5 stars, great work! If you can give F4F, please try out "Just Have Fun, YO!" and let me know what you think and how i can make it better.2010-09-07 14:18:00

I had a great time playing this the other night. The story is fun and it’s told with lots of humour and panache and set off by some bold and colourful visuals. I particularly enjoyed the cityscapes at the beginning and the end and the psychiatrist’s office – the lamp bulbs and the “expensive” comment were a nice touch. You introduce some cool dramatic moments too like the point at which you turn from your immaculate and well appointed lift lobby to a scene of devastation where your flat used to be. The scoreboard crashing down at the end is another example.

The gameplay is great with some original ideas and obstacles. The spinning wheel which raises your jump was cool. The spinning electrified spikes were very tough – the frustrated button was a neat way of being able to get away with including them. It was very satisfying to be able to blow those up later in the level, I have to say.

IMO this is your best work yet.

Cracking level, harder than a rock but rewarding and fun! I particularly liked the "Hey, that was expensive" bit in the office, genius!! Loads of nice touches and humour that made it a great experience, you really nailed the kitschy atmosphere. Five stars, obviously!2010-09-09 10:35:00

This level is fantastic - brilliant presentation. The gameplay could be frustrating at times, especially the part with the spinning rotors. I know you added a bypass button but I think a better solution would be to make that part easier in the first place - maybe remove the spikes or de-electrify some parts. The characters were well-designed but were all static - especially when the alien invasion happens I'd have liked to have seen people scurrying about a bit more and the alien ships being a bit more animated. Also there were a couple of minor issues with the ending - when coming down in the spaceship I jumped down into a small nook in a building (which you should remove) rather than falling to earth, and the scoreboard didn't cause me to finish initially so I had to jump down to the front plane and activate it. It would have been nicer if it fell right on top of you to cause the level to end.

Overall I gave you :star::star::star::star:

Right so here we go my first Feedback Review...so bare with me

Pros:
- Loved the opening, a nice 50's look, especially the American diner-esque about the whole place
- Nice use of the sometimes-rubbishly-used 3D glitch!!
- Good looking visuals, especially the apocolyptic-style destruction
- A good length, not too short that you want more...not too long that it gets boring
- A funny Level

Cons:
- There should be a slight longer build up and warning about these aliens, instead of them just appearing in your flat!?!?
- I died a few times on the conveyer belt for no obvious reason (GAS)
- One part got a little tedious, but that was dealt with, with that checpoint switch button thingy

Overall:
A good looking level, with some good gameplay :star::star::star::star: :hero:

If you look out the window in the shrink's office, the UFOs are already starting to show up outside. I thought that was pretty priceless.

I agree. That was a lovely touch of irony and personally I liked the drama of moving from the beautifully decorated lift lobby to the devastated flat.

Since this is F4F I played your level, now you play mine...

Feedback:
The intro to the level was quite interesting. I loved the font that you used.
I only had a few problems in the level:
1: the electric balls in the UFO were a bit too high and you can only get over them by jumping and holding x
2: the platforms in the UFO were spaced too far apart, so I kept falling inbetween them and dying
3: the small black creatures were very basic and I could easily push them over to kill them
4: the roters were a bit hard to get by, but I managed....(btw: I have the #1 score!)
They are minor problems, and easly to fix, but they are meerly suggestions!

I had a lot of fun playing the level. The UFO made me lol as well as the aliens. Buttheads I calls them. XD Because they look like they have butts for heads. NM....
The detail was fun and the level was quirky. I had a blast playing it and I hope to see some more new levels from you soon

....Now, for your part of the bargain.

Please give me some feedback on my level; B.O.B
I would really appreciate it.

Great opener! Loved everything about the psychiatrist's office--the look on his face, the chair, the lamp, the UFO in the background, and his snazzy certificate. Well done!!

I like the stoplight and the extra points from that.

The stuff in that area is a bit un-polished, though. Looks like the stickers you used are too big and so they become pixelated and blurry. Also, the edges are a bit rough, especially on the car.

Love the apartment, and the surprise when you come out (I laughed out loud).

The aliens look great! The conveyor belt of confused people (and saving them) made me really happy.

Unfortunately I got stuck just after saving them, past the three enemies and pulling the lever down... nothing happens. I restarted and tried again and nothing happened. Am I an idiot, or is this broken? If it's broken, I'm sad because I was truly, truly enjoying this level. I won't rate it yet, so you can fix it. Tell me when you do so I can finish!

I will go back and check this out asap. I had to fix something near the end of the level when the ship comes down. If you're over to the right a bit inside the ship when it stops you could land in a gap in the buildings. Anyway, I fixed that and eliminated the shrubs in front of the City Hall that people were getting stuck in. I republished right about the time you played, so there might be something stupid that happened when I "fixed" that other stuff. You fix one thing and break another. So I will go back in a sec and do that. I also need to post a return reply on theonlybub's level that I just played.

I added a couple pieces of thin material to where the pod enters the ship to keep the player from falling down. I wanted to emit something in the gap, but as the pod protrudes into the hole it blocks the emitter. This was a simpler fix. I suppose people could jump back down once the pod activates and they'd have to restart, but oh well. Don't jump out of elevators.

Responding to thor's suggestion to make the engine rotor section easier. Sorry, the bypasses are there. I think it's a good compromise. Some like levels to be a bit more challenging, and I felt like putting the little sackies through their paces. There are easier sections and harder sections. I'll stick with what I've got.

So Ryhas, I'll check this out and let you know by PM when everything is set. I really want you to finish and let me know what you think.
Thanks everybody. You have all be just awesome.

Edit: I just played the level all the way through and no problems. I know what Rhyas did now and I don't want to spoil anything. I'll pm with a very little hint. But for everyone else, the level is not broken. Just want that clear.

Alright, picking up where I left off, then. (Silly Ryhas... fails at simple tasks... actually I would suggest creating some sort of visual cue for that area. I couldn't figure out how to get down until now).

Tube was awesome!

Right before the rotors, if you're in the wrong lane you can just walk into the electric wall and... die... it felt a little cheap.

Freeing all the aliens!!! Hahahaha.

And... defeating the other aliens... I once again laughed out loud.

The visuals at the end may be your strongest. Though the scoreboard (as awesome as it is) is a little hard to activate).

Got the high score!

Synopsis: Overall a great, hilarious level. I enjoyed it thoroughly and laughed a lot. Some of the visuals (especially many of your buildings) are outstanding, but others are a little weak (such as the car at the beginning). Gameplay can be highly difficult, and some of those plasma balls feel too fast and too random... I think it should either be fast OR random... not both... that way it's less frustrating. I also think you should add just a small visual cue. I couldn't figure out how to get back there (so maybe make it slightly easier to get back there as well). Um... other than that, though, I loved it. Great work.

Anyway, great level, :star::star::star::star: and a <3! Awesome work, man!

Just played it and first off the triple spinning wheels were a pain ! Took me forever ! But still great visuals loved hanging out in the doc's office and rofled at his Sack State diploma. Aliens looked nice, very detailed. Liked the variation in play and puzzles. When I saw them aliens sitting in the chair I had the huge urge to rip off the head... (I play with my radio on and well it was killing song so hey)
Last note the crash/scoreboard was brilliant ! I was like yay!^-^! crash and then scoreboard =/ meh
Great visuals, feeling was good, sounds were present I sense no reason to rate 5 stars ,hearted 2 ;p

We had loads of fun playing this level, which I really think is your best so far. It's proper tricky in places, but I'm proud to say that I did not use the red button (but appreciated that it was there anyway). Actually the bit I struggled with the most was the bit where you have to change layers on the rising/falling platforms to avoid the spikes. I lost all count of the times I died here, but Adi found it considerably easier so maybe it was just me.

What I liked the most about this level, was that there is a strong narrative which carries you through from beginning to end without being overly complicated or requiring a hundred and one speech bubbles. It gave me purpose without interfering with the gameplay.

Just so you know, Adi and I both got stuck in the same place as Ryhas. We thought it was broken, perhaps as a result of playing 2 player local (a problem that we run into quite often which others who play on PSN don't have), so I went back and played through again on my own and got it.

Anyway we're looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!

Simply amazing level! I played it a week or so ago! Heres what I thought:

-Awesome, original visuals! Great work on the people and U.F.Os!
-I loved the "too hard" section skip feature! I stink so badly at platforming , that I had t use it on the first gamplay peice! :blush:
-When you are to climb into the pod that teleports you up to space, I jumped out by accident, leaving me on the ground with the previous checkpoint where the crowd of people are. Maybe a sliding door/piston winow could prevent this?
-I had no other problems with the level! Great job!

I gave it 4 stars and a heart! Thanks for a great level!

Really fun level.

Funny Story. I actually played your original level on accident... not as good... *heh*

But the remake was surprisingly good, after playing your original. The level played really well, it looked great, and it was really well paced. I didn't find anything wrong with it, and I even chuckled a few times. The only thing I found was that it got a bit challenging at times, but even that you had remedied, so again really great job. Overall five stars and a heart.

Okay, I think I may have fixed the issue with getting the roller spinning. I placed blinking lights that draw your attention to the places you need to go to get everything working properly. I think that if most people see these they will realize that they have to do something else and will figure it out pretty quickly from there.

As for the first pod and falling out of that, which would result in a broken level. It just occurred to me that I could rig a recall device just like the pod at the end of the conveyor line. That's easy enough to do, so I guess I'll pop back in and take care of that issue before too many more have that problem.

Thanks so much for all the wonderfully feedback and suggestion.

Oh, and optimafrogg, I left the original up just so people could compare and see how much I've improved. I knew I could make it better. I also want to do the same thing with the Bigfoot level, but I'm waiting for LBP2 for that one.

This might be a bit late, but I was originally thinking that your emitted floor would be contingent upon the player actually making it to the top. If the player falls out of the elevator, the piece of floor should not be emitted. You could solve this with a player prox switch, hooked up to a perm switch, which is hooked up to the emitter.

That could work, but what I did was rig a recall button on a piston activated by a mag switch. When the pod is at the top the switch is available to trigger the pod back down, so it fixes all the problems there.

But thanks for the idea anyway.

You did a great remake there !
I definitively like the atmosphere of your level (the character, the dialogues, etc).
I found some areas too difficult but as you set up shortcuts it's ok (great idea by the way !).
At the begining you put a jetpack, why ? (thus I could fly wherever I wanted and saw some mechanisms).

Moreover I liked a lot the visuals you used (in particular, the way the end panel falls is awesome !)

Anyway I left a deserved :star::star::star::star::star:
Give a try to my level below if you have time, thanks !

Good job anyway !

Ha! I've got to fix that immediately! How stupid of me. The jet pack is something I use when I'm play testing an area in play mode and don't want to bother with other parts of the level. It's mostly when it's something later on in the level. Anyway, I had to fix something the other day and I tested it, skipping past the beginning with a jet pack. I'll jump in and get that out of there as quickly as I can. I'm glad you said something. LOL.

Thanks also for your comments. I'll play yours very soon and get back to you.

Edit: Okay, no more jet pack.

Hi thanatos - congrats for being spottlighted. I had a chance to play your level today.

Just WOW... the comic-style and the characters are very cool and the martians look incredibly good :-) Well, I have to admit that I don't like very hard obstacles and you have at least one brutal tough one here: the 3 electrified propeller with spikes on their four arms - hua.... but I made it to pass this torture *clap-hands* - I was very (!) amused to see, that you involved an exit-strategy for the players who stuck here. Great!!!

What I liked the most: your sense of humor - HAHA... I laughed more than one time - that was pure fun! I have one suggestion to make: it was really funny when you blow up these two martians in the controll-room. BUT: this scene could be soooo much better: This scene HAS to be more cinematic!!!!! I mean, you push the button and they explode instantly. What about this: I think it would be awesome to include a little speech-sequence after pushing that button and before the "boom", something like "huuuh? "It" really pushed the button? "It" can't be that clever, "it"'s just an earthling, a small-minded amoeba.... " .... maybe a camera-angle on this martian, then switch to the other and anohter speech "naaah, "it"'s not that smart.... "It" has only an IQ of 110.... hahahaha".... and than a sirene's ringing - switch back to wide-screen, lights flashing, little speech "what the hell....." ..... and BAM with a screaming sound :-)))

I really loved your level - it's a :star::star::star::star::star: for me - hearted!!!
