Batman - Arkham City

Archive: 114 posts

(Really couldn't believe there hasn't been an official Arkham City thread)

Ok, the 1st game rocked. I've only recently played it and I loved it. But yes, it was too short and boss battles sucked like being injected with a deadly titan formula.

Gameplay
- You are now able to counter two attacks at once
- More puzzles
- All gadgets included in the first game are available from the start
- Side missions now feature in the game
- Gangs roam Arkham City, these are recorded in Batman's criminal database
- You find people who work for [Riddler] to find [Riddler] challenges
- Batman has his smoke bomb
- Gadgets can now be used during fights - the GameInformer article mentions Batman putting explosive gel on the back of one of his opponents during a brawl.
-Batman's been given a new gadget called the "broadcast analyzer". The article mentions several broadcasts Bats can listen in on, like the GCPD dispatch and Gotham FM. The main usage here has Batman tuning in to listen to a message left for him by the Joker.
- You can now pull off multiple counterattacks at the same time.
- Many of the super villains have formed gangs, and taken control of different portions of the city.
- The team wants to push the "forensics" angle of the first game more, incorporating puzzles in them that will become more complex as the game goes on.
- Most of the key gadgets that were unlocked late in the first game are available by default (Beyond the explosive gel, the article also mentions the line launcher).
- Interrogations replace the Riddler maps of the first game.
- Batman can now taunt his enemies via a button press.
- Certain characters have optional sidestories within Arkham city (the article mentions Zsasz), that you can dig into.

Story

Warden of Arkham Asylum, Quincy Sharp, has been elected mayor (after taking credit for Batman's work). He deems Arkham not safe enough for the criminally insane. Instead, he buys the slums of Gotham City, puts a wall round it, tells the criminals they'll be shot if they try to escape, and let them free in the city slums. Batman knows something will go wrong, so he keeps a watchful eye over the city.

This is pretty much the setting for the game, not the story. I'm sure it wouldn't be that dull...

What else do we know?

- Joker is alive and being treated by a gothic Harley Quinn.

- Two Face captures Cat Woman and plans to execute her to get the respect of his fellow lunatics.

- Oracle is missing so Alfred is Batman's "left ear"

- The super villains have their own gang and territory.

- The Riddler returns, but will we see him phsically?

Extras

- According to Rocksteady, Arkham City is 5 times the size of Arkham Asylum (whether this is size or length, this is good news)

- The game is actually complete. and playable They now have the till next year for extra things here and there, and some polish.

And to make everything even more exciting, here's the first screens.

Is it free roam, or is it more linear and mission-based like the first one? I almost got the first one, but it wasn't me. This one, on the other hand, seems epic! 2010-09-03 21:33:00

@ RaukSaron
I hope they don't do multiplayer like PvP.
If so then do it SplinterCell: Double Agent style, like Minions vs Batman,
You and other minions try to take down batman and other heros.

@PiggaBling
I assume it is freeroam seeing that there was side missions, 3 times larger map, roaming gangs and the first game was free roam.

It's a funny kind of genre. It's a linear story in a fully-explorable world. You can explore all you like, but you'll usually want to go through the action packed story first.

Then, you can print out a walkthrough for those darn riddler challenges!

I played the demo first. For about 20 times.

@Multiplayer Ideas

I think it'll just be co-op. Batman and Catwoman. Maybe a competetive twist as well.

I loved finding hints towards batman villains in Arkham Asylum. I'm hoping with Arkham City they will add a hint towards every Batman character in someway, and lots of new appearances.

Condiment Man boss fight, anyone?

I hope they have more boss fights period . I loved many of the encounters with the villains, but I still hope they have more bosses and more variety, in addition to the cool encounters they had in the first game.

I wish they add more Harley Quin into the game

The double counter will be awesome, also the freeroaming gangs will be epic.
I think Arkham Asylum had the best fighting I seen in a game.

I'd love for it to have appearances by and the option to play as every member of the Bat-Family (Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Oracle, etc.), though that's probably hoping for far too much. Or even an appearance by other members of the DC Universe as well. Can you imagine if just before the climax of the game Batman activates a signal and just as the villains seem to be poised to kill him Superman and Wonder Woman show up to help out?2010-09-04 01:07:00

The boss battles weren't great, but it was fun facing off against classic villains.

Except for Killer Croc. Yes, it was fun seeing him bursting out of the water... for about a minute. Dragged on a bit too much.

Your logic is faulty.

:kz:

But yeah. In the comics, the first Batgirl, Barbara Gordon (Commissioner Gordon's daughter) is shot in the chest during The Killing Joke (one of the best Batman novels evah) by the Joker since the Joker is trying to make Commissioner Gordon insane (it's where The Dark Knight's plot of the Joker trying to turn Harvey insane came from, only then it actually worked, which is cool to tie the two together). Anyway... after Batgirl was shot, she became a paraplegic, and became Oracle in order to continue to help Batman even when confined to a wheelchair.

In the Arkham game universe, I'm not sure she's actually in a wheelchair, though she's obviously still Gordon's daughter through dialogue and stuff, but yeah.

Still.

...

/cough

Anywho... um...

Barbara has had 3 successors to the Batgirl title as well: the Huntress (albeit very shortly), Cassandra Cain (a fan favorite character, and DC's editorial chew toy), and the Spoiler (the current Batgirl in the comics) had taken up the mantle at seperate times after the Killing Joke. They also happen to all be great characters in their own right and I'd love for all of them to make appearances in their iconic costumed alter egos, but if that were the case the game might self-destruct from awesome overload.

Batwoman is also a completely seperate person/identity.

Technically she is Oracle, however, in the Arkham game universe they never mention her past as Batgirl, so we don't really know.

At any rate...

So yeah. About the Predator Challenges. I hate that, in the first game, you had to do three tasks as fast as possible to win the medals. If there are Predator challenges in this game, I hope they have a scoring system so that taking out enemies more creatively gets you more points, to emphasize creativity when hunting people down. Just my only complaint with Batman 1 :/

Predetor Challanges was awesome to me.

@RockSauron

Here is Oracle's Biography in Batman Arkham Asylum.
I took the liberty to Bolden the important text.

Story:
The daughter of Gotham City's Police Commissioner James W. Gordon, Barbara
Gordon was forbidden by her overprotective father from joining the GCPD.
Instead, she took on the identity of Batgirl and was a crime-fighting partner of
Batman for years. But that all ended when the Joker shot her through the spine.
Paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair, Barbara adopted the
new identity of Oracle, and now aids the Dark Knight with her computer
expertise, providing Batman with a constant stream of information in the field
to aid his battle against crime.

According to that in the Arkham Universe she is oracle

WTF... YES, that's what I just said >_<. Twice. >_<

I see, you're saying that everything that happened in the database is true in the Arkham universe. not so. For instance, Hugo Strange had an entry in the database, yet Batman's encounter with him in AC is their first encounter. The database tells the story of the comics, which isn't necessary the story of the games, so we can't be sure that Oracle was once Batgirl. And why the hell are we arguing over that? >_<

You said Oracle was Batwoman, I corrected you. The bio doesn't mean anything, since it refers to the comics which take place in a different universe then the games, which exist in their own universe with no continuity outside of the games.

I said she was Batgirl >_<. In the comics yes, we just don't know for sure that she was Batgirl in the games because the games don't take place in the same universe as the comics. Ok, can you grasp that now? >_< Can we get back to the game?

I'm a little worried. They said Arkham City is now complete, as in fully playable. And they said all villains so far in the game have been confirmed. So are they adding different side quests, so they don't actually tie into the story?

Because the first one was indoors, this is outside. Batman always had some means of fancy transportation, I'm sure we'll have plenty of dark and cramped settings, Gotham's a really exaggerated city environment so tons of shady areas , alleys, etc.

I'm glad they're giving attention to more obscure Batman villains along with his more well-known ones. And Hugo is actually a rather interesting one; thehefner has been doing a number of posts on scans_daily featuring his assorted comicbook appearances as a prelude to Strange's upcoming appearances in Arkham City and The Dark Knight Rising and he comes off as a lot more effective then most of the neophyte Batman villains introduced within the last decade.
Using him also might be a good way to differenciate Arkham City from the first game. I liked Joker's role in Arkham Asylum and how Paul Dini uses the character in general, but if he was the principle villain again they'd run the risk of the sequal being a bit too similar to it in terms of the central conflict. Hugo could also give the game a very interesting two-way "psychological warfare" dynamic as opposed to the rather one sided one that Batman used in the first game.

For me, I think Batman: Arkum Asylum is as close to a "Perfect Game" as makes no difference;
Everything that it does, it does "to perfection" ;

It's got one of the best fighting systems of any beat-em-up/hack-and-slash ; the graphics are top-notch ; the voice acting captured the characters perfectly ; The Story was well delivered ; the level design was excellent.
The game has everything... Action, Stealth, Puzzles, Platforming, Story... all done alot better than most games that would only contain one of those elements.

For my money, it is the best game of the current generation. (LBP excluded)
It has some flaws - I've never been a fan of "Boss Men", especially the 'learn their pattern - exploit 3 times' Boss Men. But the Boss fights didn't annoy me as much as Boss's from other games.

The only thing missing from it as a "Batman" game was being able to drive around Gotham in the Batmobile - in fact it's a shame the game wasn't set in Gotham. But localising it to the Asylum obviously gives them more control over level design/story flow etc.
I'd still like to see Batman done "GTA" style - with a massive open-world Gotham to explore (al la Spiderman 2) - but even if the 2nd game is half as good as the 1st game, it'll still be twice as good as most other games.

I'm a fan of Batman in general, never got around to playing the game.
I assumed mass hype = mass disappointment (just like the movie).
I still dislike that Harley Quinn design..

Is the first one worth getting now that the sequel is coming out later?

People that know me, know how critical I am of just about everything... so for Arkum Asylum to impress me so much must surely be a measure of it's greatness.
Some of my friends that I convinced to play it were not as taken with the game as I was - but that's because they didn't have the reaction times to properly enjoy the combat system - which is one of the best currently on the market. Once you get the hang of the counter/flow mechanics of the fighting, each fight is a challenge to get the biggest multiplier/score possible. And the extra challenges that you unlock are alot of fun, just for getting to grips with the ins & outs of the combat/stealth etc.

I would say get this game, even if there wasn't a sequel. You can pick it up for next to nothing now - and it's worth every penny, even at full price
(I've only Platinum Trophied 2 games, Batman and LBP - make of that what you will)

I'm not a great fan of the Batman character, but Asylum was a very well done game and the City trailer got me quite pumped.
The combat system was cool even since it's perfect for the game, though I prefer other stuff like Bayonetta/Devil May Cry/Ninja Gaiden combat system.

Basically, they say main story is about 12 hours. However, he says there are a lot of side stories (most likely with the same quality as the main story) and says the whole story should take about 30 hours to complete entirely... not including challenge maps. My gawd, if they manage to keep the same quality...

It's been confirmed that Robin will be a playable character, though he'll only be available as a pre-order bonus from Best Buy. He won't have any storyline missions like the playable Catwoman, but he will have a couple of challenge maps. Hopefully he'll be available as DLC some time after the game comes out.

He looks pretty awesome to me. Just thankful he's wearing pants, lol.

Uhgg~ I hate Robin and i always have~
he always brings down the story and turns it in to almost a joke,
plus it only makes sense for Batman to work alone.

Well hopefully his new looks will match his new non-campiness. Plus at least he has nothing to do with the story this time, lol.

Not liking the look myself, especially the shaven head look (I heard someone compare him to a miniature Vin Diesel). Personally I'd rather have Nightwing as the sidekick cameo.2011-06-22 03:14:00

Remember those awesome Patient Interviews in AA? Well, they're back in AC, only more awesome, as they are conducted by Hugo Strange who, being a villain, will torture his patient's minds and stuff that any "Decent" doctor wouldn't do.

Catwoman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10n-1dpXsjU

Riddler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cckiw23bBSw

Two Face: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkeBRRl0NIM

Riddler's is my favorite

And if anyone is wondering who Holly is, she's the preteen prostitute who was like a sister to Catwoman in Batman: Year 1. <_< >_> >_> <_<

Hey people, how did this thread get buried? It's one of the best games of the year! I've been playing it since yesterday ant it's AMAZING! I have completed the main quest now I have to complete the 250 Riddler challenges, play as Catwoman (that will take a while as my PS3 won't connect to this wifi ) and complete the combat and stealth challenges. Everything about this game is great and so much better than the previous installment. The art, the Riddles, Batman's moves, the boss fights, the environment, the writing, everything. People should totally check this game out, and true Batman fans don't have an excuse for not doing it.2011-10-23 17:03:00

Yeah, only I've been playing since Tuesday . USA! USA!

Anyway, I am 71 percent done my profile. Got a few more riddler challenges, then most of the challenge rooms, then New Game Plus. I'll probably do New Game Plus in a few weeks though .

I've been playing it all the time too. I can't get enough of it. I finished the story, sidequests, Riddler's challenges now I only have to defeat the massive amount of combat and stealth challenges I unlocked over the course of the game. Oh and then there's New Game +

Loving this, it's a helluva game. It'd be my favorite if not for LBP2. I love how not only it handles Batman's universe with care, but it also throws in many references to the comics and animated series. Spiderman and Superman, eat your hearts out because I'm not seeing you getting a better game series than this

I liked Frank Miller's reimagining of Robin as a 13 year old female gymnast.

Apparently my brother got me this game for my birthday, but I haven't had a chance to catch up with him yet...
It's good and bad....
Good: I don't need to buy myself the game
Bad: I'm going to have to wait a bit before I can play it

Got this game yesterday... but due to time constraints I'm probably still not going to be able to play it for a bit!!!

And I don't want to start playing it because I know I won't stop!

When you find enough Riddles, you'll automatically get a message to press select and then it will initiate the puzzle sequence.

Too many good games out!

Between this - Battlefield 3 - Dark Souls - Dead Island - Deus Ex - Space Marines... I've barely got time for them all

And in 10 days - Skyrim comes out - meaning the butter that is me will be spread even thinner on the toast of life!

I completed the main story line, was fun enough.
What I don't like is some of the interface design. Especially during those extra challenges on the main menu, grr.

Plus what's up with having to press X/continue each time you die?
So annoying. Of course I wan't to retry. You jerk.

Oooh, good stuff

I'm going for the platinum myself. I completed the story mode a few days ago, and I'm in the process of mopping up the Riddler trophies, just have 1 area left to go. I've aced a few of the combat challenges, not even got started on the predator challenges.... will probably resort to using the internet to guide me through those (as I did on the last game ). I remember 1 challenge on Arkham Asylum - the Extreme one with the electrocuting floor. That one was insanely difficult. Was sooooooo satisfying once I finally did it and got the plat!

Finished all my Riddler challenges yesterday (including Catwoman ones).

There was only a few that I had to look on the internet for. Perhaps about 5..... or 6...... maybe 10...... ok, it was more like 20 overall..... but 20/435 ain't bad

I needed help for some riddles.
Having the game badly translated in Italian, I had problems with some puns.

Your English seems good, could you not have just played the game in English?

Also, could you give an example of a bad riddle translation?

My English is good when I can clearly listen, that means that whenever I listen to things like radio transmissions or more than one person speaking at once I start to have quite some troubles.
Also...English is translated very badly in Italian most of the times, I just give an example LBP related..."stiff" was translated as "blocked".
For months I thought that a "blocked piston" was the same as a staff, and couldn't imagine nothing that made my stuff move like "stiff" pistons.

I got all my medals for the ranked challenged... yay! About half way through getting all the campaigns done. It's so much more frustrating given that you only have a limited number of goes before you fail completely. The extreme challenges are flipping tough. There was one time on "top of the world: extreme", I got right to the last chap and I got a bit over excited and jumped from the grate (where I was hiding) prematurely and got a shotgun in the face. So addictive though.

Then it's only this trophy (which will give me the 100% trophy) and the calendar man one for my platinum. I think I want my last trophies to be the campaign one and the 100% because it would mean more when I get the plat. Constantly changing the date on my ps3 to get the calendar man trophy would be a bit of an anticlimatic way to bow out

*"Only a week old, not too bad for a bump," he murmured as he posted his message*

Just completed the main story today, meaning it's time for riddles. Does anyone have some really good tips for collecting everything? If I've interrogated one thug in each area do I have everything on my map? It didn't seem like it...

I have to say, it's looking like both the riddles and the campaigns will prove to be too much of a good thing... especially when you consider that DLC forcing me to do all campaigns four times for a 100%. >.>

Sometimes you'll have to leave the areas or go about collecting Riddler's trophies and completing challenges before more interrogatable henchmen show up.

You can also look here (http://www.gamesradar.com/batman-arkham-city-riddler-guide/) for a good guide to getting all them (don't feel too proud of yourself by using this however because if you do you'll prove Riddler's point that your a cheating cheater who cheats).
