The Big Debate - Should creators have a score on their levels?

Archive: 20 posts

Here's a question I have pondered over for a while - Should a Creator be entitled to a score on their own level?
Before posting in the poll, look at the following statements

Pros of having a score on your own level
-- You can set a benchmark for a score on the level
-- You get your name on the scoreboard
-- The creator has a chance to "Defend" their high score

Cons of having a score on your level
-- The creator can hide secret emmiters and guarantee a spot on the scoreboard
-- The creator's name on the level is praise enough, they don't need to clutter the board
-- The first person to play the level is not the creator, and does not get discouraged by a high score by the creator

It's a debate! Post your suggestions for Pros and Cons here! Let the world know your opinion

well for my levels i dont do it, dont see the point of having a realy high score. people can still have fun beating other peoples scores. but some people do get high scores by testing there own levels after they publish.2010-09-03 21:19:00

I really don't see the excitement of getting the high score on my own level. I love trying to get it on other levels, but when I get it on my own I feel like I am just being silly because I obviously know where everything is, and then I have made it so it's basically impossible for anyone to beat me.

Interesting topic though, and I'm sure that plenty of people like to set the high score on their own level :-)

No way, I never try to get the high score on my levels. I made it, I play tested it hundreds of times, I know where all the secret bubble holes are, etc.....

I agree with Sketch and Poo.

I accidentally got the high score on Sugar Roots, I thought I was playing a 'my moon copy' but I was playing the real level. When I went online it, uploaded my score. I was horrified, considering that level has alot of secret areas with lots of bubbles. I almost republished the level, and I even apologized for doing it in the thread. It has since been hacked, and PeytonIsBloody beat my score, but I think I am still in the top five on the scoreboard. I feel bad to this day.

lol i remember that high score, i couldn't beat it im pretty sure peton_is_bloody dose that glitch that valmossi told us about. but we told him not to advertise it anymore because it ruins the game a bit.2010-09-03 21:57:00

It really depends on how the scoring is done for the level. For a skill based level the creator doesn't have an advantage that can't be overcome by playing multiple times...and if the level is good I think it encourages replays to beat the creator's score. For a level where the score is strictly from finding secrets it's meaningless for the creator to take up a slot.

The creator can hide secret emmiters and guarantee a spot on the scoreboard

Well that's just silly, if someone wants to do this they are welcome to the #1 spot.

I've played my own level pretty many times, I think the high score is no longer held by me.
Since it's a fairly simple race level I think it is allowed for me to also try to get on top. I should try to beat that number 1 time sometime...

I SAY NO.

I don't see why the creator of the level should have a score for it. It's just silly. I mean I love bubbles, but I don't get it from my own levels. I get mine from playing the heck out of VJ's levels

It's more fun to play someone else's level and get the high score. It's Play, Create, Share.

NOT Play your own level and get the high score , Create, Share. Just typing that is weird.

The question is, "What pride do you get from getting a score on YOUR own level?"

I think it depends on the nature of your level. I have a exploration level, and almost all the bubbles are out of sight, and the aim is too find them all. This isn't really explained though in my level, so I decided to set a benchmark score too point people in the right direction and to show what is a good acheivment. However the ol' conscience made me make it beatable. This is mainly because I don't like creators getting a highscore just because they know every secret, but I think (especially if its a survival level and knowing where stuff is is no object) a creator does have the right to defend their highscore.

Setting a highscore on your own level can encourage replays, because nothing is quite like beating the creator at their own game.

So I guess its the motivation for getting a highscore, which depends whether it is right or wrong.

It really depends onwhat kind of level it is for me. If it's one that has a tonne of chances to chain together bubbles, but most of the bubbles are obviously placed with few secrets, then why not set a benchmark? It gives some sort of competition to the real pros.

Also I love having a high score on my levels, but only once I've seen a couple of people play it and I want to see if I can beat them. If I can't, then they've done very well

But mainly I test my levels after I publish them, just to make sure they all work. Then I get a highscore sometimes, so why should that be deemed bad?

It all comes down to personal opinion, but tell me this; if you see a creators score 1st on their level, would you rate the level any lower? Because if you wouldn't (and you shouldn't) then it can't matter that much to you

This is a legit debate here!! I believe all creators should defend their scores because...

It sets a goal to others playing your level
It creates an awesome competition between you and the people playing your level
It shows you are capable of doing well in your own level (if you have a lousy highscore it just makes you look kind of stupid)
It scares stupid cheaters away!!!

The question is, "What pride do you get from getting a score on YOUR own level?"

You don't, you set the standard for other bubble pros to compete against you! I wouldn't have even half the plays I've gotten on my level "A Bubbly Garden." if people weren't trying to beat my highscore! I mean come on, there's no beating that logic

peton_is_bloody dose that glitch that valmossi told us about. but we told him not to advertise it anymore because it ruins the game a bit.

peton_is_bloody is evil. We all know that Btw I deleted that info 30 minutes after I posted it so he most likely has a different way of cheating. He could be a hacker for all we know... Also, nice spelling on my name

---

About the glitch I found...

I wanna clear some stuff up. We all know there are cheaters out there. I highly disagree with people who think they only use one glitch to do it. First off, the glitch I found is extremely hard to do, and only works on a handful of levels. Secondly, there's a thing called "Action Replay PSP." Heard of it? It's a cheating system that hacks into games to make things different. Mostly to the user's advantage. There's a high probability that this cheating system allows them to hack into the game and cheat. Speaking of hacking, there are thousands of geeks out there that have ways of hacking into games, I pretty much have absolutely no idea how they do it, but they do. So I'm just saying here that probably more than 80% of cheaters don't use the glitch I found.

I think i dissagree with you on a few of those but i see your point aswell, but just having a bad high score on your dosn't make you look stupid i dont even play my levels after i first publish them i play them later on when i feel like playing my levels. I dont want people to say or think "this guy thinks he's all that because he can get a highscore on his own level".2010-09-05 23:35:00

I answered No!

Although on my level, The Tester, I accidentally stepped on the scoreboard when I tested it and now have what looks like an impossible score at the top of the highscore list(It's not impossible).

Sorry for coming in late. The Black Ops forums have really been keeping me busy!

In short, I don't care. I can't even beat the top score on my own level, so eh. I think it depends on the situation (race levels = competition) so I'm okay for beating the highscore on my level if it's fair (again, race competition).

Ehhh... They should have their own score, but it shouldn't be placed on the scoreboard.
So, I disagree with both of the responses on the poll.

...It lives?

50-50?! Wow! It seems to be a double sided argument. I don't know what my score is on my own latest level, but its sure to be embarrassing.

how to publish a level (by nosemomkey)1-create a good level
2-click in the level, and then click "publish" (make sure you have wifi )
3-wait +/- 30 seconds so it gets published correctly
4-go to "my levels" in the community moon and download it
5-play/test it (just once) and try to reach the highest score possible
6-now you know if there's nothing crashed in you published level and now all the people who will play the level will try to beat you regular score...

and if they actually beat you it means they are really good, so it makes everyone happy:
you- you have the best score, and a crash-free level
them- they will have a strong goal, and if they beat it, then they will get really, really happy becouse they know theire awsome

so, in my oppinion there's no problem in playing your level, but i think plays by the level's creator should not count online (imagine a level called " free scorpianz LOLZ" in the most played list just becouse its creator played it one million times)

thats it!!!
