Over the Hills and Far Away (Spotlighted!!!)

Archive: 63 posts

Isla Moya nearly killed you, but you made it back to the mainland. Can you make it back home?

Over one hundred hours. I have put a lot of time into making this. I suffered through creators block, and deleted 2/3 of the level last week due to the fact that I was not happy with my work. Over the weekend, me and Sketch talked, not just about lbp, but about.... you know, life. I want to personally thank him. You're awesome bro, never change. Any problems let me know.

I will do F4F for everyone, just post what level you want me to leave feedback, chances are, I already played it.

A huge thanks to Domik12 for the beautiful pictures!!

You changed the name

First detailed review

Story: N/A/10
Not really a story. All cool.

Music/SFX Choice: 9.4/10
I really liked the music you chose. Even though there were quite a few SFX, a couple more could of been added.

Appearance: 10/10
Wow. I love velcro-style. I did realize you used a lot more stickers in this one.I love everything. Especially the 3rd layer. I really liked that waterfall, but it was moving a little fast. I love it when it changes to the castle theme. The windmill at the end is amazing, and as you know, I like windmills

Creatures/Objects: 10/10
The trees look amazing, and I loved the owl that did a shout out to your level "Chickadee." I say it once again, the trees are phenomenal.

Gameplay: 10/10
This is where the level shines. Tons of bubble combos (my favorite). I liked the puzzle you made in the tree (wood and green material not sure if its in a tree). I found that secret bubble area The part with the ice circle is pleasing. Found another bubble site. Holy crap huge bubble section . Anyways, lots of secret bubble places make this level interesting, and the puzzles are well designed and awesome.

Overall: 9.7/10 (not an average)
I think this is by far your best level yet. This is staying on my PSP for a while. :star::star::star::star::star: <3 and I finally award you a creator <3

F4F: When I release "A Bubbly Forest" It'd be great to get feedback for that, but that'll be a while from now...

Phht!....it's probably more of the same. Y'know, like Velcro has creators block or something....lemme' go see. * uninthusiastically picks up PSP and begins to download*

*YAWWNNN* I guess the material choices are pretty awesome...hmm, those tree's are funny, lol. I mean, uh, I'm unamused. Let's see what's next ,...hey, nice waterfall! I mean, if you're into THAT sort of thing, y'know, which I am not... let's keep going...Ooooh, a wheel! Those are always fun to ride in...WEEEE! Hmph, wheel rides are soo last year. Well, a new area, looks wicked.. wait, did I say wicked? I meant weak , yeah, it's not cool at all. Aww, there's the end goal... I mean, ahh, yes, finally this pain is over!................Dang it! OKAY, It's awesome! I guess I'll give it 5 stars, I'm feeling generous. And what the heck, I might as well heart it to, y'know, help you out and stuff.

@Velcrojonze
This level was so beautiful!!!!!!! It's an enormous graphical change from your usual levels. The tree's were funny, the platforming was interesting, I'm seriously surprised that your level runs so smoothly with all the score bubbles. The only thing I could find wrong with this level (and pretty much most of your levels) is that the description is somewhat misleading. It makes you think that there's an EPIC story but then it leaves you with the most minimal to get from point a to b.

BUT IT WORKS
I don't understand there is something weird about this level that just entices you so much that you just don't care for a lack of story (only previously achieved by EVERY SINGLE FREAKING MARIO GAME) and it's like your brains telling you screw the story just play the game!!!!!

I rarely ever do this but <3<3<3<3<3 and a :star:

VelcroJonze, it hasn't been awhile since I gave you feedback. Also, I still need a level to finish, but I just never went to create mode in awhile. I bet you if I entered create mode, I'd probably get a lot done. Though, maybe over the weekend I'll work on it. I'll check your level out soon and of coarse leave some feedback.2010-09-01 01:49:00

Found another sneeky problem, If you walk back from where you came on the ice circle thing you fall down to a place your not ment to be in.

Ok enough of that Well like i have said before i love this level! i hearted it before i played i love the tree's and the owl they are realy funny! Great secrets in your levels they are always fun to find and collecting all the bubbles is something i can resist doing in your levels i realy liked the second half of your level you added that was awesome and the very end of it looked so cool with the barrels and windmill. i have no problems with your level apart from the two Bugs i found haha anyway 5 stars and a heart and thanks for letting me test some of it the other day.

Oh yea and when i said i fell past the lake before i ment i fell to the bottem of the main create mode floor.

Hey sketch, I hope that was just a fluke, I have hit all the ponds in the first section at every angle, and so far I have only been gassed. That's weird, I'll see if anyone else mentions it.

Thanks Bud!!

Cool, dont forget about blocking the other thing i mentioned

That is the emitted platform that appears under the ice ring, I have it set for ten seconds in case someone goes back to the checkpoint at the tree. Unfortunatly, the thermo is maxed, and i can't add a piece of gas or nothing to keep you from falling through. I am going to let that slide.

I fixed the other problem, and republished.

Thanks buddy.

I went ahead and republished it again, I found another problem, the last crusher before you exit the castle-cave-dungeon, if you jump before it smacks you it won't crush you. Instead, it knocks you through to the floor. Hahaha, Not sure why that happens, I added a thin layer underneath, and a piece of gas, just in case you make it through. Sketch, I also fixed the problem you mentioned about the emitted platform that disappears, well... I added some gas there as well, so that should do the trick.

This is what publishing a new level is about, getting good feedback, and fixing problems.

Thanks again to everyone who have played my new level, and I hope you grab the new version, because it is so much better!!

Hey Guy's, I found another problem, I noticed the moving spikey thing was incredibly hard to get over, and today, messing around in create mode, I saw an invisible spike right where sackboy lands after the jump. You ever try to delete somthing like a piston and it won't delete? That's what happened to a small spike yesterday right before I published, I thought it was gone, but it was still there, embedded in the stone. Weird, anway, There is a new version up now, so grab it again please.

As extra incentive, to play it again, I have a new secret area with lot's of lurve...... if you can find it!!

Awesome level Velcro!!! This level looks gorgeous!!! You did a great job blending materials, corner editing and you had some well placed stickers too.The visuals were to notch,l loved them But the real star of the level is gameplay (noticed how l used the word star?...yeah,me neither.) Gameplay was fun in every way (Velcro fun way, awesome mega insanely fun way and last but always least...the super ultra mega lame way...wait a sec...sorry about that last one how did it get there?oh yeah! l was thinking about scorpians riding rocket powered camels) Anyways,l liked the simple and fun puzzles you had here.My personal favorite...Velcrets and Jonbos!!! l love your bubble combos and l wasn?t dissapointed with these ones, they?re so fun to get.Your secrets are always fun to find, but l didn?t find the new one,l guess it's well hidden.l won?t stop till l find it!!! well,l stoped to post here, but that doesn?t count.l easily rated 5 stars n a heart.Keep making lame levels Velcro!!! Oh and remember today?s opposite day.Whoa! l didn?t give alot of positive feedback and l?m soooo not sorry for that 2010-09-02 02:55:00

Hello there VelcroJonze!

It's been quite a time since I seen you last publish a level. I remember when you were pulling levels out like every few days. Now "Creator's Block" gotten to you. Very common for most creators. Looks like you may still have Creator's Block because building new obstacles and ideas start getting tougher. Mainly because most ideas were already implemented. I mean, I suffer from Creator's block myself. Though, seeing a level once in awhile from one of my favorite creators is good enough. You also improved so much since you published Fort Sugar. Best part, your still alive, a very much kudos to you VelcroJonze. Let us move on to feedback.

I want to say your intro is very cool. The details on the trees look so cool. I like the use of the third layer glitch. Adds more feel as if I were playing PS3 on the go. Some of the trees were so random. Picked up a laugh and left. The owl called me a jerk. Wow, VelcroJonze did someone hack your dialog to be so rude. (Kidding) I noticed you used stickers for scenery. Such as the "Grass Rough Doodle" on the floor. The waterfall looks very cool and I like the bridge over the water. Oh, and more spikey obstacles. Very cool and challenging.

What I mainly love about all your levels is the bubble collecting. Very hidden and a nice chain to follow. Yet challenging to get the perfect chain combo. Your levels are one of the only levels I try and aim for an highscore, Sadly, I either fail, or someone beats my score. Heheh. I liked the ride inside that glass circle. Something new I haven't seen you done. Now it was time to relax and watch the beautiful landscape. I like how you fling your sackboy too. Something that never gets old to enjoy. Also, the very secret bubble area. Wow, so many points to make your score increase. I liked the Tri swinging thingy... obstacle. I just like it because it's flexible and collecting the bubbles from the ceiling were just as fun.

I also enjoyed the scenery changing from a seasonal area to a castle schrade. The castle lools as good with the 3rd layer glitch as well. I liked the obstacle were you climbed the ceiling as you were being munched on. The obstacle where you are flung to the ceiling and swung over the fog was cool. Keeping that bubble chain going was a first and only try moment. You had to think fast. Out of the castle and back outside. The ending is so different. Usually, the level ended unexpected; although, this ending was just there. Very different of you. It put a smile on my face. I've had no problem to occur during my playthrough of your latest version. Very fun level VelcroJonze, I'll be on to give you your ratings now.

Length: 5/5 (This level lasted decent and played well.)
Material Usage: 5/5 (Your levels always have a different theme and vibe.)
Sticker Work: 5/5 (You used more stickers, but mainly for landscape. Well done!)
Corner Editing: 5/5 (You can shape a Platformer's terrain well.)
Terrain/Mechanics: 5/5 (Your obstacles are always new, giving the level a new adventure.)
Story: N/A (Not really a story built in.)

Total: 25/25 Perfect Score!!

Your levels are always terrific. It sure gives a fun playthrough each time.
Therefore, I gave you 5 stars :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart. <3

Until we cross paths again,

@ Sketch- Thanks for helping me de-bug this sucker. You found a few, and I just kept finding them today, I think we might have it under control now. Thanks again man!!

@valmassoi - Thanks for your feedback. I love your reviewing style. I can't wait to play you next bubbly level. Later.....

@ Kaiju - Hahahaha, you always make me laugh.

@kitcheninja- Thanks so much for your feedback and the heart, that is so cool!!! I hope you have the latest version, it's been a long day. Do you have a level you'd like me to play?

@Balgarino- Hey man, your review had me in a fit of the giggles. I am so happy you like my new level, it's been a a heck of 24 hours, but I think I have it all fixed now, I saw you had a great score on on version 1.03, I believe. lol.... I hope you are working on that level about school, or something else, I really like your style. later buddy!!

@Spark- Thanks so much for your detailed feedback. I always enjoy how you can break a level down and describe it perfectly. It makes my day to know you dig it. You mentioned Fort Sugar, and I was playing part 1 the other day, and thought of how far my style has evolved in the last few months. For better or worse. I still don't use a ton of stickers, but I'm not scared of trying some things differently now. I can't wait to see what your cooking up, don't rush it, I know you have a ton of other things going on besides lbp. Later my friend!!

Velcro...l'll just say one thing...l was able to break your level. It's not really a problem,so don't worry.l only decided not to take the glass wheel (thinking l would find the new secret) and l walked, and walked and kept walking until the block hit me.l jumped to the back layer and if you keep walking you fall off and break the level.Yeah,l?m still working on my school level and on my school work too.l?m having some trouble coming up with the desing of the school, but l?ll try to make it look cool.l?m glad you like my style...l can?t wait to tell my friends!!! @kitcheninja- I can't wait to see what you come up with!!

@Famous- Thanks buddy!! I am glad you dug the new level. I am so sorry about that spike thing. I was on my way to the job yesterday, riding with my friend, messing around and realized I had a problem. It is truly a bad feeling to know you have a broken level on the server and your ten hours away from wifi. Hope you grab the new version. I want to leave feedback on your new level so bad. I was told by another judge it was best not to post on level threads until the contest is over, so expect a good review sometime this weekend (*whispers.....i loved it).

@prstu- I am so happy you like my new level. I love your cardboard level too, and I will leave you some feedback in the thread. Thanks so much for your feedback!!

@Domik- Hey Buddy!! Thanks so much for the wonderful photos, I was so happy to see you made me some. I am also very glad you like my new level. I always love to hear from you in my threads. I hope you are working on something new. It has been a while.

@Balgarion- Hahahaha, yeah I noticed that today too. I am going to leave it alone. It's not really broken since you can retry and spawn back at the checkpoint under the tree, unless you somehow managed to break the piston on the launcher, now that would be bad. Thanks for helping me de-bug my level. I really appreciate it.

Wow. Velcro your levels are always awesome. I remember back on the gamefaqs/gamespot forums stumbling upon your levels and have been hooked. You have created platforming masterpieces, this is no exception. I had a lot of fun trying to find all of your hidden bubble areas (think I found them all). Your 3rd layer usage is great and you always have the perfect materials (I struggle with this). I had some problems when I first downloaded your level, and ended up getting the high score on every version. I'm glad you fixed the problem with that spike pillar thing, it cause some frustration. Hello VJ!
It is nice to see a new level from you and it is better to see that you've improved your skills as an excellent creator.
I see, because of the things that you said, that this level was really hard to do, but I can tell you that all that hard work is well payed with such a good level.
Visually it is beautiful, gameplay is perfectly designed and it is always nice and as addictive as your previous levels. A special mention to your excellent platforming design.
The way that you used the 3rd layer glitch is good and corner edit is more polish that on your previous levels. I loved your tree characters!
I love your levels, because all of them have something that make them special, they're that kind of levels that you can play whenever you want just to get some fun and try to get the highest score.
Excellent work as always, and of course you won a well deserved <3 and five highly brilliant :star::star::star::star::star:.
See you son VJ!
P.S. Congrats on the spotlight!

Hey man! Just gave this level a play and it was a blast! I loved "The Return of the Chikadee Tree"! It was lovely to see that wonderful tree yet again. The environments and gameplay were great! Just like every other one of your levels. Sorry, I don't have much more to say. But this was a great level over all! Oh, also your hidden spots with scorebubbles were great! I'm not sure if I found all of them or not though.

Keep up the great work! 5 stars and a heart!

Okah, time for some feedback. This is the 11th time I've played it, according to my play count.

Part I: Playthrough
Okay, so here we go! Great grassy look, and the third layer glitch really shines here. The environment looks amazing with the materials you picked. Oh yeah tree? Well you know what? I'm using EXTRA plastic water bottles today! And not the recycled kind either! Have fun dying in pollution! The bridge here is beautiful eye candy. Some of the usual switch pulling up ahead, not too much to say about it, other than it's fun and creative.

Okay, so when I first saw the glass circle, I was so relieved. It's incredibly good to know that even the best of the best use a good old GAMEPLAH FILLAR once in a while. *grab wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee* I love the way the floor appears under you in this section.

Next thing to really talk about is the castle section. Looks amazing, and the stickers really bring it out as well. I did have problems with the gameplay here, however: that spike thing! It moved so fast, and when I did make it, I usually ended up in the gas pit. :-( But oh well, no harm done. On to the end area - which looks absolutely amazing, and was clearly created for the sole purpose of looks. Great end to a great level!

Part II: Summary
Wow, another great Jonze level! This one is a bit different from the rest though - it was a real artfest in here. Materials looked amazing as usual, but even more so here. And with this level, I hereby award you your Jr. Sticker User badge - it's nice to see one of us figured them out. :-D There's also some nice objects in here - from the various Chickadee trees to Sack's awesome windmill (Grr, you knew I was doing a windmill level) house, there's plenty of eye candy.

Gameplay is also awesome. Though not as groundbreaking as TCII, it's still the classic switch pulling, BUBBALS grabbing fun. There's a lot of variety in the mix too, puzzle in the 'forest', classic in the castle, and filler in between. There's something for everyone!

One thing disapoints me though: no starting dialog? I would have liked to hear a bit about how Sacky escaped TEH DANGERUS ISLA MOYA!

I'm sorry things are turning out so short, it's very hard for me to express how much I love (or in this case, lurve) your levels. Great job though!

Part III: Review
Looks: 5/5
Platforming: 5/5
Story: 4/5
Originality: 5/5
Replay Value: 5/5

The Good: Joo lrn these stickar thingz? Joo teach meh plox? GREAT ARTWORK!
The Bad: Spike pillar of doom!
The Ugly: Number of times said obstacle killed me.

Five stars and a green, grassy heart!

Hello, I just played your level a little while ago and it is quite amazing. Going for the point bubbles is not my cup of tea but I can appreciate the effort you put into making this level good for the score hunters out there. I did manage to stumble across two somewhat hidden bubble rooms by accident while trying to find the way to go.

To be honest, I didn't really find much wrong with it; there were the occasional parts where I wasn't exactly sure which way to go, but that's usually me just being dumb. I also couldn't figure out how to get the glass circle moving for like 10 seconds until I saw the dissolve, but yet again, that's just me being dumb.

The visuals in this level were quite good, especially in the beginning and the end. They were kind of simple in the middle, but that didn't bother me, due to the nature of the gameplay in these sections. I really didn't understand the story or why the trees had to hurt my feelings, but yet again, that was okay. For me, my favorite part was the entire middle.

I recently played your level Tera Cota as well, and from these two, I can see that you have a very unique style with platforming which I find very enjoyable. The pacing is spot on; it doesn't feel like too much is happening at once, but there is always a lever to pull, an obstacle to avoid, or some point bubbles to collect. It all flows very smoothly from one room to the next, and the cameras show enough to know what to do and restrict enough to hide the next area. My favorite obstacle was the two triangles with the slingshot-like things; even though I didn't really understand why they were designed like that, they proved quite fun. I also like the part where you jump down and grab the ceiling, avoiding the things trying to crush you; it looked extremely difficult to pull off but turned out to be amazingly executed time wise to allow a smooth crossing.

Lastly, the visuals at the end were a nice touch to this amazing level. I rated it 5 stars and hearted it .

Hey, nice level. This is my favorite level of yours so far. The visuals were great, especially at the ending area. Like all of your levels, this had loads of tough-to-nail point combos, and a bunch of crazy corner editing. Your humor at the beginning was good too. Overall, fantastic work! I rated the level :star::star::star::star::star:, and <3ed. 2010-09-11 23:32:00

hi there VJ!
first of all, im really not sure if you named the level after the song "over the hills and far away" but if you did, i just want you to know that if it was possible that song was already <3 'ed by me

then, i didnt start the level already and i knew i would love it, 'cause i read the lvl description and it mentioned something about isla moya (my favourite level so far) so... yeah, nice idea to put it in the level description

and finally i started the level, and like half minute after i'm laughting at the "dont-realy-know-why-are-they-angry-with-me" trees and then laught harder at the one saying "you're not really popular are you?"

and then the fun started, the awsome VJ-platform came and i had fun until i saw the scoreboard... that was a dark moment right there... i wanted the level to continue, becouse... i mean... i found it big (and awsome) but not as big as others from you (yet as awsome)...

so yeah, i gave it :star::star::star::star::star: and obviously a <3 !

(and could you leave feedback on the fade to black (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=31648-fade-to-black) level please? , i know you've already played and <3'ed it, and im very thankfull for that, but well... that level only got 2 coments from others )

@eagerneph - Glad you liked it dude, I hope you are working on something new for us.

@metsfan1025 - Thanks for your great feedback, I am glad you liked it and Tera Cota!! Congratulations on you new level being spotlighted.

@FrogBoy - Thanks buddy!! I always enjoy hearing from you, I know you are normally over on the ps3 side of the boards so it's always a great to see you on this side!! Now, how about that Dr. Seuss level?

@Taffey - Thanks dude, it's always good to know that the best of the best enjoyed one of my simple levels!!

@nosemomkey - Thanks for your awesome feedback buddy!! Yes, I did name this after the Zeppelin song. In truth, I was listening to Ramble On, he is talking about, "leaves are falling all around, it's time I was on my way." And it made me want to make a level based on the season Autumn. But Ramble On did not seem like an appropriate title, so I went with Over the Hills. It's cool that a young dude like yourself, digs Zeppelin!! Later man!!

@Everyone- Thanks for your continued support of this level, I am sorry I took so long to respond to you all, I think I have gotten to you all now. Edit: Sheesh, I forgot to thank B3 for his review, look below.

If there is anyone I have missed on the f4f, post here, or send me a PM.

Sorry to double post, but I forgot to thank B3.

Thanks so much for the wonderful review of my level. It made my day, and I appreciate it.

BTW, after your review I made a decision to make a level of what happened between Isla Moya and Over the Hills. I am just as curious as you as to what transpired between those two levels.

Look for it this holiday season.

Later buddy!!

You know, it's funny, I was playing my LBP PSP and then for some random reason I wanted to check the community moon. I checked and their were three new VelcroJonze levels! I downloaded them all but soon realised that this was the only playable one. So I deleted them and played this one Approximately 3 times. I wish I could give you some feedback but my profile is corrupt. Until I get it fixed and redownload this level I can't.

Feeling sad,

Hey VelcroJones,

Ok, so this is very late but this level deserves more detailed feedback.

You really need to do more custom items in your levels because the ones in OtHaFA are amazing. The scene with the house at the end was beautiful. The trees were great too. On top of that you were able to blend them in with your art style perfectly. I also want to point out how consistently good your camera work is. With amount of movement and speed in your levels, this is no simple feat.

The pacing was slower than your other levels. I liked the change. The combos were still there but I had to work a little harder to find them which I enjoy. The hazards were well crafted and fun to work through. As someone else said at first glance they look overly menacing but more enjoyable than frustrating to pass. I hate to admit that one of the reasons this took so long was that I wanted to find the sticker switch before the review but I couldn't. I thought it was behind the wall with the similar sticker, but that wasn't it=P

I enjoyed the playfulness of the characters. The angry trees are great. I only wish the owl had a unprotected brain. I worked my way up there but was only able to jump on his head a few times. I look forward for the back story in your next level. If you do do a level about the trees here is a song that might get you in the mood, The trees (]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWHEcIbhDiw&feature=related). Sorry, I just love the song.

I'm going to end this by saying that I can see your skills increasing in every level you do. I'm looking forward to your increasingly better visuals mixed in with the patented VJ gameplay.

@Xenon - Thanks Buddy!! It is always great to hear from you, and knowing you liked my new level means alot.

Cameras are great tool. I used quite a few in this level. My problem is sometimes I will build an entire scene, because I think it is such a great shot, and they are mostly panned way out, and by the time I get near completing the level, I will get lag in those nice camera angles. The opening scene of this level is something I had made right after I learned how to do the TomBurk glitch, and It just looked good with that camera all panned out. I think the only lag in the entire level is that opening scene. I ended up putting some brains on the bigger materials and the waterfall and popped them right after that (or the player did, I had a sensor switch hid in one of the bubble piles), and after that the level runs smooth as glass. But it is worth a little lag to have a scene I am happy with. So thank you for noticing the camera.

I wish I had put a brain on the owl too. That is a great idea.

That elusive sticker switch huh? I had a couple people PM asking where it was. Hahaha, but since you are a so awesome I will give you a hint. There is only one sticker switch, and it is not at the end, there are no more bubbles when he makes it home. But, between the opening, and the ride in the glass circle, there is a patch of grass that is not really grass.

Later my friend, and happy hunting!!
