New Enhancements: Gravity, Magnet and Spiked Boots

Archive: 28 posts

I was thinking, and these would make cool new enhancements. We just have the jetpack right now, so I can assume more will come later through DLC or something. Anyways, here they are:

Gravity Boots: Allow you to jump higher, but you become floatier (catering to the gravity manipulation people are asking for)

Magnet Boots: These boots magnetize onto metal a'la Ratchet & Clank, allowing you to scale up walls and even the ceiling

Spiked Boots: Climbing up-hill and walking on ice is made easier, completely keeping you safe from slipping

What do you guys think?

All of them are really good except the last one, not that it isn't good or anything but it would take the challenge out of a lot of levels if you could add them in the level. The Magnet Boots are one of few things I would want to see immediately in the next DLC, those boots could open up a bunch of new ideas not to mention gameplay. First ones cool too

Yup I know what you mean regarding the Spiked Boots, but maybe they can be a sort of temporary prize. Overcome optional-challenge X and now challenge Y will become easier.

I definately, and I mean seriously think you should suggest those Magnet Boots to MM, like no joke those are an awesome idea...

In fact, how about we add this to the interview we're getting with Alex Evans? Maybe ask something like, "Do you plan to add enhancements such as Magnet Boots, etc?" I'm sure we'll get an interesting answer...unless it's, uh, "I can't quite comment on that yet." x_x

I reckon a teleporter would be an awesome tool for making a crazy maze.

Its just so awesome an idea you wonder why they don't have one already.

Not even close to the gravity manipulation I was asking for.

I'd like it if they would incorporate that same disorienting effect with the gravity boots they had in Ratchet and Clank where the camera would turn and follow you, but because LBP is 2.5D as opposed to 3D, the camera would just turn on its side

They could even include the 'follow player' option, just like they do with camera in create mode, so you could change just how much the camera tilts with you

I love the idea. Maybe a 'magnetic metal' material to go with the magnetic boots. I think a good idea would be to make it look like the 'Wrong Trousers' from Wallace and Gromit!2008-10-23 19:06:00

Magnetic boots are now second on my list of NEEDSSSSSS!!!!!!
What great gameplay elements this would add.
How many upside down walking over a pit of fire do you think we'd see lol
Well at least our Australian friends will feel more at home

This being first on my list!!!!
I've been banging on about this for ages and as you say can't believe they haven't got it already. With the respawn points already being there and it being the same sort of principle, i think it would be very easy to implement

The problem I see with a teleport system is that if Entrance A is too far from Exit B, once a player walks into Entrance A, the rest of the players will instantly be left off-screen, and thus die in 5 seconds. It'd be hard for them to get into Entrance A as they cannot see their screen, being disoriented.

It could get worked around though, somehow.

I thought of this also as first but then i thought they could just make it like a race start where everyone would have to be standing in front of it for it to activate.
But i also want more of these options on everything to allow for this feature to work where only if all sacks currently in the level say get on a button, or are within a censor range..... etc, that the switch will work

I like em all! Especially the spiked boots because ice helps on desighing a level and making it distinct but somtimes you just wouldnt want it to be slippery.2008-10-25 04:34:00

I'm wondering, would these be akin to the jetpack in that they are on a tether, and have the same "shake to remove" mechanics, and function essentially the same way...just with less flying and more of other features?

Gravity boots: Needs a rename (like a prefix of "anti-") but definitely a go. Tweak menu: Amount of weightlessness.

Magnetized boots: Definitely. (I like the idea of plodding up the side of a metal building, each step making a hollow clang in a regular pattern.) Plus, since it's limited to metal, then it can't be abused. (...Much.) Also, I think this should limit the player somewhat in their speed of travel, particularly on metallic surfaces. (Come on, you've got huge magnets strapped to your feet! Don't tell me you're going to be running along like normal.)

Spike boots: Mmm... This, I'm not entire sold on. I get the concept for what it does. I'm just not sure spikes are the best thing to cause the intended effects. What about just "rubber boots", maybe just plain "boots" or something that's infers a high-traction type of effect. (Yeah, sneakers! ...Okay, I don't have the best naming ideas, right now.) So yeah, better traction on glass, better traction on hills, etc. Sticky shoes, pretty much. Not sure of what kind of limitation might be added to it...

My addition:

Roller skates: Yes! Kinda like the skateboard, in a way. But you get a lot more control over your character, in some mid-air maneuvering, ability to propel yourself, and some limited jumping. I'm not sure this would cater so well for the "on a tether" type of limitations, though... Maybe since you have a more limited jump, you have to get up to a higher area to clear the area, which means you need to shake them off before moving on. Or alternatively, you could simply have a proximity switch that deactivates them when you cross it. Summat.

Funny. In Ratchet & Clank, the Magnetic Boots became the Gravity Boots in Going Commando, so in that sense they can be seen as the same thing. 2008-10-25 07:59:00

I can't see why you'd want magnetic boots or spiked boots. If you want a player to climb a wall, there are plenty of other ways of getting them up there, aren't there? And if you don't want a player to slip on the ice, then don't put ice down in your level.2008-10-27 23:47:00

I'm LOVING the idea of gravity boots. They sound really cool. Magnet boots also seem pretty nice, but I like the gravity boots more. :32008-10-29 04:39:00

These are great ideas Aero. The truth is there is so much that can be done and added to this game but I suspect MM will be saving a lot of it for the already announced sequel 2008-10-31 00:41:00

It's glass, actually... Ice isn't in-game. Yet.

Anyway, the reason is so you can utilize multiple uses of the same thing. For example, you could want an area locked off, so that the player can't get through to it, which they need to do in order to finish the level, and you do it by having an angled sheet of glass, which slides them back down. So you have them go through another area, and they end up getting these boots right next to the glass, and they plod up it, and progress to the end of the level. End of example.

Just because there are other ways to do it doesn't mean it's not better to have variety. With this, you can have the very same surface, the very same area have two very different characteristics, depending on what they've got on their feet. And it works well from a platforming standpoint.

These are some brilliant ideas, Love the magnetic boots! What i was thinking, is you could have an activating checkpoint for them, then a deactivating checkpoint if you get what i mean. Sort of like you walk past a post thing that gives you them, then you go past one that takes them off when you don't want the player to have them any more2008-11-06 03:55:00
