Suggestion: Create your own material
Archive: 10 posts
I would love to create my own pattern for a material. Basically my idea would be that you create a square, design it however you want using stickers or extra layers and then save the square as a pattern for a new material. So lets say you make the same size square again using this newly saved pattern, it would look just like the original but only take up the layers that you specify. Then lets say you use the pattern again, but make a huge shape, the same pattern would be used over and over like squares sewn to make a quilt (without stitch marks of course) letting you have whatever you're building have a pattern that you've designed yourself. There are ways to do this now by taking a picture of a pattern you've designed and then stickering your finished object, but this doesn't usually look very good, and if it's being used for a wall, floor, or any other large object you'd have to try to line up the edges of all the stickers and hope the sticker glitch doesn't start ruining your project. I think we can do this | 2010-08-31 03:15:00 Author: SackBoy98 Posts: 588 |
I think it would be great if you clicked the capture object tool with the square button to bring up more options, where then you could click, "Import Texture", from there you could get an image from the HDD or from your stickers page. The textures (common video game term for materials) in LBP have a lot more than just that one repeating image though, they may also have a normal map, which is like an image that makes an object shiny looking, and other stuff too. | 2010-08-31 04:00:00 Author: warlord_evil Posts: 4193 |
That would be very cool! Especially if you could put your created textures into prize bubbles for other people to have. One thing that would need to happen if this were a possibility, is an option to set what kind of sound it makes or what kind of properties it has. For instance, if you are walking on wood, it is going to make a different sound than if you were walking on stone or metal. | 2010-08-31 04:05:00 Author: ShamgarBlade Posts: 1010 |
I do suppose you can edit the material properties otherwise too, stickiness and bounciness for example, but those may be the only ones... I'd be happy with the current textures if we were able to move, rotate, skew and scale them. Game Jammers told there is the UV tool (placeholder?) which does the moving and rotating, but no scaling... | 2010-08-31 05:36:00 Author: Unknown User |
The textures (common video game term for materials) in LBP have a lot more than just that one repeating image though, they may also have a normal map, which is like an image that makes an object shiny looking, and other stuff too. I'd settle for a generic flat texture similar to blue wood or dissolve material if it meant I could make it look like whatever I wanted, maybe then you could just change the weight along with the already confirmed friction, stickiness, etc. I think we can do this Really? All I've heard about was being able to rotate and slide the texture around on an object, not create your own design for the texture. | 2010-08-31 06:05:00 Author: Rottinghouse Posts: 143 |
All I've heard about was being able to rotate and slide the texture around on an object, not create your own design for the texture. Exactly this! You can't create a new material, but you can move and rotate the texture and tweak bounciness, stickiness and friction of materials. | 2010-08-31 10:36:00 Author: Spikeball Posts: 74 |

*looks at above 2 posts* MY POST ABOVE THEM HAD THOSE SAME POINTS Sorry I just recognized a slight uncertainty in the above posts (I hope..; I think...; I would say...;etc) so I decided to make things clear^^ | 2010-08-31 15:19:00 Author: Spikeball Posts: 74 |
