Vietnam: FPS (First Person Shooter) How was it possible?

Archive: 5 posts

I never thought a fully functional fps level was possible, ive said about it before but was always told that it was impossible in lbp so I always assumed that it was until now. If you have'nt played the level yet, it a fully functional FPS level that is in the style of Vietnam that has a HUD & crosshairs but how was it possible? I noticed that the gun (M16A1 in description) uses 3 layers & its some type of frame that is created so that you move from side to side. So how was it done? 2010-08-30 17:02:00

I made one once. It's easy when you think about it. The best method is to make a small box in which your sackboy will spawn. Coat it in sponge. Ok, now add a jetpack in front of the checkpoint and so the player will fly about making the box move. Add the gun on the top and for the sighter use a magic mouth. Now make a grab switch on the sponge which activates an emmiter and voil?!! If you found that brain- numbing I suggest Warlord_Evil's FPS template.2010-08-30 23:12:00

Well, I hacked the PS3 system, copied my pre made files into the LBP file to include a FPS stuff like the gun. Nah, I'm kidding. I did it with magic... LBP magic.

If i tried to recreate that, my gun would be flipping around in circles. Thats a big problem I had. Easy to make, but hard to do well. You could have a good detailed gun, but the frame (or whatever you use) is more important then the gun. Now my gun contains metal.. Metal heavy, jetpack not powerful enough.

I was going to use a piston to move up and down on a base that has wheels to move left and right (i figure Warlord uses that) But the aim was just **** to twitchy. I also wanted a stand alone frame that house everything (from logic to sackboy) the only logic that not attached to the frame is health and i could actually attached it if i wanted to.

Rockets are smoother, but they come with problems, problems being they like to tilt and reversing the aim is slow (though some sort of super rocket that... hmm, ill try that for my next level).

How did you tell I used a frame? I tried to hide that! I'd admit I didn't do a good job at that (Note to anyone trying to make something impressive. Try to hide how you made it and make it seem impossible.) I always thought it was possible making a FPS when I tried, I looked up FPS in LBP and shocked how most was.. Utter crap concepts. (Another note: Please, don't release your gun itself. Please show it moving, shooting, hitting enemies, doing something impressive for a tech demo, no stand still guns shooting the air. Because you end up getting distracted to much. Same thing nearly happen to me, but I locked it into a level and only a few people played it.)

I had the ideas to make a FPS level in my head for ages, Blackhawk trailed my "frame" idea, i wanted to test that out first, when i was creating it, it was if LBP was made for a FPS, all the tools were there. For my Vietnam level I was going to use the same frame, but I scraped that and started from scratch with Vietnam and made a new, improved frame, with reloading, (took out recoil because it made my Blackhawk one inaccurate as hell.) I put all my ideas that worked well, put in a 3D gun, done a few other things.

Reloading... Hard! Try it yourself. Okay you got the reloading down... but how does it reappear? Okay you made the ammo remit. but how do you put that onto a moving object that works with the shoot button? you can't. When you emit something switches don't attach to each other. So you have to make it fit perfectly into a puzzle, like half logic that works when the other half emits.

My gun itself is on the first front layer to the 8th layer. It was great because it gave me a whole extra layer to use. Thats another point I wanted to talk about. I went around playing a lot of other peoples levels (i recommend doing this), whenever they used 3D (which was like 5 levels) they used the 3 normal layers and 8 front layers. I gave up those 3 normal layers so I could include moving enemies that move in and out of cover, I lost the ability to add greater detail, but it was worth it.

Enemies, annoying, When I think about it, i should of used one rhythm logic box to a couple of enemies not each enemy having it's own ( i used the logic to make the gun flash.) I would say that the Enemies used up a lot of thermometer space and my next level will address the memory whoring. If you're unaware (i know i was till the end) My enemy shooting sound didn't seem to copy. At the start of the level you can hear their shooting sound but the rest don't make a sound.

For now. I'm leaving my new Zombie level to rest for awhile. (Until i stop having dreams about LBP, it's scaring me).
