Looking Deeper Into Their Eyes...

Archive: 7 posts

I have been concentrating on 1 subject, and 1 subject only...
Now, I have read many books on animal point of view, human/animals connections, etc. (Bill Wallace being my favorite) Lately, this has been itching in the back of my head, screaming, 'LET ME OUT! I'M A MYSTERY TO BE SOLVED!'.
I've gotten to asking myself, how do they view the world? How i can somehow communicate with them? Understand their thinking? What would i see through their eyes? My dear, loving pet, Lady, has big, brown eyes that have a story to be told, but the fact is, humans have trouble with communicating with animals. Lady sometimes will whine, lick the air, and kick in her sleep as she dreams. What are those dreams about? My pug, (Pugsey we call him) he has his own story to tell. He has a still, silent sleep, but when he is awake, he wines, barks, and howls. Is he trying to speak to me? Can't say it's impossible, it has been proven dogs are smarter than most people presume they are.
If you listen to the dogs bark in your neighborhood, you hear their web of communication float through the air. Howls sing through the air, and another replies from the other side of the neighborhood. What are their conversations about? Usually when you shut your dog into a room for punishment or to answer the door (Barking at visitors may cause you to do so) they cry and scratch while whining and barking. The first time this happened with my shih tzu, Lady, I imagined her yelping, "I want out! Let me out! Who's at the door? Who? Who?"
In my favorite book, A Dog's Life: Autobiography of a Stray, the author had a great detail that straitened my path of curiosity more than ever. http://img1.fantasticfiction.co.uk/images/n31/n155344.jpg

Recently, I read a book called Straydog, and the main character remind me much of myself. Just like the girl, (believe it or not) I am the irregular, different girl who would rather be interacting with animals, reading or writing stories than be out shopping and hanging out with the popular girls in school or 'TV girls' as referred to in the book. This set me to thinking deeply... when i looked at my dogs, i saw something more than a bundle of energetic fur and big, brown eyes. I saw a connection between her and I. Just as Rachel felt between the feral stray.

Next time you look into the big eyes your dog, try to think of what they are thinking, trying to say, and what they are seeing. None of the 'I'm hungry, feed me' or 'Let's play!' that people make jokes about. Come on, dogs are smarter than that! Dogs are people to, and they each have their own story to tell.

Sometimes, i get so curious, I wish I were a dog. Even for just a day. I'd like to have the experience of being a dog that many take for granted.

I haven't read stray dog but I have read a dog's life. Great book. There are some great and sad parts and I love all the experiences throughout. You do make a good point. Animals aren't just... your pet. Unfortunately we have no pets right now but we had a lot before. I wouldn't be surprised if most dogs are smarter thansome of the humans you see nowadays. Also, I think this also goes with "bugs have no feelings". How exactly do you know Good stuff.2010-08-28 04:37:00

You're right LW, there's more to an animal's point of view on the world around them than most people assume. my Welsh corgi
/Chow mix, Abby, is a perfect example. She seems, to me, more thoughtful than most other dogs.. Like if we go on a trip without her, when we get home, she acts kinda grumpy and ignores us a little because she loves car rides, and becomes upset with us for a period of time(though she eventually forgives us)... it seems as if she has reasonably deep emotions, and because of that,-this may seem strange,- she's almost like a sibling to me o.O she has a very intelligent and emotional look in her eyes, and a reasonably mellow personality. Isn't to jumpy, or whiney ,Never bites anyone unless she's playing(not even strangers) And spends alot of time sitting calmly gazing out the window as though she longs for something.. she is a bit strange, for a dog, but I wouldn't give her up for any other mutt.. I have a flying squirrel too, and compared to most rodents, she's very smart, and a really fun pet too(well not 'pet', more of a little fuzzy friend) she comes when i call her (when she's loose in my room) and there's a certain clicking noise i make to let her know that i have food for her, which she responds to accordingly. She likes to play too.. ^^ So I indeed agree: There's alot more to animals than meets the eye.

Hey, great post man! I'm not really sure how I completely feel about dogs as I don't have one myself but I've been around them enough to kind of know them. And I must admit that sometimes I can be extremely curious about what dogs are thinking. I think you're right about most of this stuff!2010-08-29 02:12:00
