Steam Paint - Locomotive Leviathan

Steam Paint - Locomotive Leviathancroissantbuncake
Ok so due to key issues I've decided to go ahead and unlock my latest level, Steam Paint - Locomotive Leviathan.
This is my second steampunk level and takes place amongst the wreckage of a colossal train. This thing is so big, it even carries other trains!!!
Contains plenty of shooting action, as well as a chase scene, platforming, swinging mail bags, 2 mini bosses and some incredible scenery!!! These pics can't do the level justice due to the amount of lighting effects that won't show through in LBP screenshots.

Good to hear. I couldn't have played it because of the key bug. I'm amazed Mm haven't fixed it yet because it's a major bug.

I'll play this later, thanks.

I played it when it was in testing, and I absolutely loved it. Great graphics and amazing, mind-blowing objects and enemies.

Loved the mechs and the gameplay felt very natural and not tacked on(I could believe that I could be swinging along parts on the inside of an overturned carriage).

The only problem was on the fight with the second large mech, I managed to find a part of the scenery where I could fall out the level

Besides that little problem, 5 stars and heart

This looks incredible! It's on my list for today!

edit: OK, here we go!

I don't need to tell you that the level is breathtaking aesthetically. Amazing!

The wheels I had to ride were tricky. Thanks for the infinite checkpoint.

I'm strolling along admiring this beautifully rendered steampunk train, and the platform tilts and the thing starts chasing me! I love it!

Right after the train chase, there's a giant laser cannon/engine of death. I can't seem to figure out where to hit it. I got frustrated and jumped AT the thing... straight through the level and to the creation floor. Might want to look into that.

Handed the controller to my wife, and she killed the gun.

But I killed the second one all on my own. Took a lot of hits. I guess I just needed to be persistant, but the level is so loud that it's hard to hear the paint-drop indicators that you're hitting the right thing.

No major complaints, though. It's a wonderfully chaotic and adrenaline charged level, with much to see and run from!

Woah! Very nice level! Great atmoshere, platforming, bosses, chaoticness, and action sequences! Especially liked the falling train; awesome... The chase seen right before it; awesome, too... Level; awesome. Period.

Okay, almost period. The only things that bugged me the slightest bit were the bosses. The were just too similar. Not the appearance, but the gameplay aspect. They were just a little too alike in my opinion.

Still was just a great, great level. Definitely seemed like you put a lot of time into it.

This needs more recognition from the community!

The train chase was so amazing. It was awesome to see it plummet into that hole. This level was downright awesome, to say the least. 5*, hearted 2010-08-29 07:31:00

On the first look the visuals might look a little blunt; but the flickering lightning and shades of red light sure fix that out.
The visuals have very great detail and steampunk in them, and the sounds and choice of music support them perfectly. The level is perfect eyecandy.
The turrets had a very detailed steampunk feel in them too, even though they shoot plazmas, (hot steam?). The gameplay was very nicely integrated in the visuals and functionality. Plus the excellent use of the 3D glitch. What not to like?

If there was 6 stars, you'd get them, but no

:star::star::star::star::star: and an obvious <3

Did I mention it has awesome machinery?

Excellent. Just the kind of eye candy I can appreciate. Train looked awesome. Paintball gameplay against the mechs was not quite my cup of tea, a bit repetitive, but I loved the beam and flare effect you used there. 3D effects were suberbly done, although it was hard to identify the playable layers and this affected the flow of the action at times. However, that's more of an issue with 3D layers generally than any error on your part, and it all looked so cool it was worth the trade off IMO.

Playing with PBS and Bremnan last night, we found a way to drop out of the bottom of the scenery to the level floor (by the first mech with a charge beam I think) and also a way to bypass the final mech enemy before the scoreboard, by using the springboard below to boost jump to the legde above it.

Anyway, a fantastic looking level, and despite some minor flaws it was certainly deserving of :star::star::star::star::star:<3

mistervista: Thanks vista!

PaddyJ: Thanks Paddy! I'll give that a look, did it involve over shootingg the section from the bounce pad?

Sabre_: Thanks Sabre!

Salaciouscrumbcake: Thanks! I deliberately set the target number high on the steam mechs, to reflect how terrifying they are when you first encounter them. I'll look into fixing that gap also.

Piggabling: Thanks! Regarding the bosses, I didn't see them so much as bosses but more as a sort of tank, mass produced and therefore identical.

-DR-: Thanks DR!

Nitewalker: Thanks!

coasterfreak: Care to elaborate on what you mean by blunt? Thanks!

Blackfalcon: Do!!

Ungreth: Thanks!! Was the first gap between the mech's legs? That second one seems to be a recurring problem, I'll definately look into that!

Thanks guys!!

This level is amazing.

The visuals were exceptional because the materials perfectly fit and the good use of stickers and decorations gave the level a great atmosphere. You used very good the corner edit tool and made a nice work with the 3D layer glitch. The camera angle suited the whole level along those great presentations like the train one.

The game-play was good but i thought at times that the level got a bit repetitive and i think you should give the player more things to do cause at some moments it could get boring, despite this i think it got some pretty nice plat-forming with contraptions that fit the level.

Overall i rated it 5* and tagged brilliant, good job keep it up!

Ferrch: thanks for the feedback!

Paddy: Did you hear a break sound? I know I rigged one to break (the rail dissolves) but I know that if you hit one hard enough it will snap under the force.

Got to play this today, so I'll start by applauding the design; it was cool. REALLY cool. All the little gizmos had the complicated machinery look I try to get, you pulled it off so well! I'm afraid I wasn't too taken by the gameplay. No fault of your own, believe me, it's just the whole shoot like hell-take cover-shoot like hell style gameplay never was my thing. And this was the sort of level that kills me a lot; mish-mash scenery (it was done brilliantly) always gets me, can never really tell where to jump! Also I had no idea what to shoot on any of the cannon things, which was a bit of a turn-off for me, as there was no skill involved on my part.

I'm sorry, I'm coming across very negatively. It really was a top-notch level, don't mind my opinions! I had fun playing it, great atmosphere and some interesting platforming. Nice one!

Wow!!, is what I said upon entering this level, the visuals for this were phenomenal, awesome lighting and material choice! Most creators are too lazy and never bother to try and use the corner editor, but you definitely aren't one of those people! The rock material was corner edited to perfection! I knew that I'd have to heart this level when the chas scene started. My only complaint is that shooting the turrets began a little repetitive near the end, but all of the other awesomeness totally made up for that! Obviously, I rated the level :star::star::star::star::star:, and gave the level a <3.2010-09-03 00:18:00

Beautiful level. I especially liked the big mechs and the train chase (who doesn't love a good chase scene?)

On to the quibbles. I can never tell whether I'm damaging the enemies or not. I would like some sort of visual feedback (a visible paint switch or a flash when it gets hit or something--just so I know I'm shooting at the right spot).

When the floor dropped out from underneath me, I ended up landing in the fire and dying. It felt cheap and not reasonably avoidable (if I'd been standing in the right spot, I'd have avoided it, but until it dropped, there was no way to know where the right spot was).

There's a part with some kind of cannon or something that spits out what looks like orange leds--I had the darndest time getting through it because I kept ending up on the higher layer behind the second platform and every time I'd try to layer shift down, I'd hit the fire somehow and it'd pop me back up to the back layer. I died like five times just trying to get to that second platform. Might wanna' extend that platform back a little so the player can more easily drop onto it.

The second mini-boss didn't seem to give me much opening to shoot at it: I had to stand all the way to the right so I could quickly layer change back, but almost every shot it fired came through there, so I spent more time hiding than shooting.

But yeah, other than those minor quibbles, it was an awesome level. I very much enjoyed the steampunk visual style.

Thanks for all the feedback guys!
I've implemented all of the suggestions as much as I could. It's a shame I couldn't have done this during the beta but unforunately the key bug prevented this.

It's funny that with each level I seem to max out a different thermo, with the prequel to this (Steam Paint - Sub-Urbia) it was the collected object thermo, with The Realm of The Wolf Lord it was the vertex thermo (the tiniest corner edit would make it blow) but in this level it 's the sound objects, switches and connectors that are at their limit, adding one more of any of those will set it off!

Wow, amazing level sir! This is probably my new favorite shooter level, a type which I normally avoid. However your level I just so alive with machinery that it was impossible not to love. The level was visually stunning, with your guns and trains being the highlight, very beautifully crafted stuff! 5/5!2010-09-06 15:51:00

I played the level and here's what I thought.

I loved the rusted machinery look to it and fighting the machines were awesome although it was a bit tricky to find out where I shoot but after a while I found out. The two little boss fights were great even though they were the same and the explosions were amazing! There were lots of detail put in this level and I thought the train was well designed plus I loved how it chased you down. I also liked the gameplay to it and the first jump might be kinda hard to some, but was fine to me at least. Good job with the 3d layer glitch, I gave it :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3 Great job I'll try mentioning this on my blog sometime soon.

Ok! Here's my review:

Visuals: Darn near immaculate, I might say! Loved the rusty old steampunk wreck feel, the feeling of "awakened machines after a long while" was present, and the use of rock and rusty metal was really impressive. I especially loved the part where, at the first mech (I think), there was a gap through which you could see a section of bridge. I thought it was extremely atmospheric, and had a real EPIC look about it. The trains themselves were beautiful, however I felt as if there weren't enough sections that show that it isn't just a huge ruined train track; it's an actual locomotive leviathan. But then, that's just nitpicking!

Gameplay: The gameplay was largely good, however at some parts I found myself leaping into hazards that I couldn't see, like the bit before the spongy wheels that take you up, where that machine fires sparks at you. I leapt into fire and then went straight into gas, both of which I didn't notice. Also, I felt that there should have been a final boss, like a giant train robot or something, but know you ran out of thermo. That aside, I found it incredibly enthralling and enjoyable. Especially the mechs; they were so awesome, the way they moved was very realistic. And the turrets were the coolest turrets I have ever seen.

Replay factor: HELL YEAH!

Final Score: :star::star::star::star::star:<3 because, in my opinion, this was the best level ever. Everever.

Awesomely epic level! The visuals looked crazy and the enemy designs are radical. The train chase part is brilliant too and it is well designed. Speaking of the train chase part, after I got squished by a train and the checkpoint went right into the gas, I mysteriously died and the checkpoint disappeared so I have to restart the level, but don't worry that's the only flaw of this level. Outstanding job. 5 :star:s and a <3.

P.S. How did you make the train car in the background glitch move? It's impossible to make objects in the background move.

Awesome level.

The visuals are amazing and the enemies fit right in with the atmosphere. It's pretty challenging too, especially that final enemy.

Not sure if you are still looking for feedback or not. Played through it (actually score wise I didn't pwn). I loved the visuals through the whole level. In My first problem was with the first turret...I had no eathly clue I was hitting it, and with how much life it had, me still not knowing where it took damage, and the little time it left open for shots....it went on for a bit. I loved the nest eareas, all was good...but all the turrets dragged a little. I loved theirdesigns and the later more powerful turret things. But those also I could not tell if I was hitting at all. If you can place switches (I have that issue in two of my levels as well ) what about a light that is connected to the one you already have on there just to flash when it is hit, I can't recall if lights are on the same thermo. The bosses were all great they just dragged, and that may have been because I could not tell if I was even doing anything. On the first big turret when I would move down to shot him I would fall off the gound into gas and die randomly. On the first turret I could not move back down from when I jumped up to shot him...and died many a times. Great level. I din't run it to other glitches, but I did see something green though the wall behind your level right before you jump on the springy things (looked a little like a watermelon?).2010-09-20 09:37:00
