Jirugameshi's Underdog Level Recording Service (Recommendations needed)

Archive: 77 posts

Please read the rules before posting, or a cute hamster will spontaneously combust!*
http://j-walkblog.com/images/tinycutehamster.jpg

Alright, since I've gotten a great capture device and am leaving Create mode aside for a bit, I want to record other people's levels. The problem is... I don't really know which levels to record, so that's where you come in! I need your help!

Simply post the name of a level to record in this thread and I will try it out ASAP. If I like the level, I'll upload a video of it on my youtube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/Jirugameshi) and leave a comment on its level thread if I can find it (or make a thread in Recommendations if I can't).

Teh rules! (remember, the cute gerbil is at stake!*)

You must recommend someone else's level.
To avoid a variety of issues and headaches, I will not be recording your own levels if you post them here. I want your recommendations for other people's levels. Levels that you liked and think are good enough to be recorded and shared with the LittleBigWorld.
Avoid recommending popular levels.
I want this service to be a way to help underrated levels and creators to get some attention. Although the well known LBP creators make amazing levels, they usually don't need much help to get their levels spotted. I may make an exception if a particular level hasn't had many plays though.
Both LBPC and non-LBPC levels are accepted.
I'm not really looking to make this service LBPC exclusive, so don't be shy about mentioning a level from any creator if you like it and think it's good.

Levels don't need to have jaw-dropping visuals, insane custom music, glitches or real watorz. As long as I enjoy the level and it looks like a lot of effort and heart has been put into it, I'll probably give it a chance.

That's pretty much it. I'll be checking out levels myself from the Showcase and Recommendations, but I would really appreciate the help in narrowing down the list and maybe finding some unlisted gems.

So... fire away! (but remember the cute squirrel!*)

Also, feel free to discuss the service if you think I should change something about the rules or have any other comment.

Sorry I had to vote "Those poor hamsters!" They're so dang cute!

Anyways, I suggest recording Tehgamebuilder's level 'Rebuilding Imagination' as it is darn good and in need of more recognition. It was spotlighted recently and you can check out the showcase Here. (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=32546-rebuilding-imagination)

Great stuff.

I'm currently uploading Rebuilding Imagination and Tranquility Towers.

Bitter Heart Castle and Death Swamp seem to be pretty successful judging by their amount of plays and hearts, so I don't think I'll be recording those for now (levels with fewer plays take priority).

I may record Roller Inc since it doesn't have a video already, but only if I manage to ace it (I've been trying while waiting for my videos to convert, still no luck).

Seriously? Wow. Best of luck to you... I haven't even thought twice about acing it. I could probably do it, but I really feel like dying a lot is part of the experience. Enjoy the conveyor belt section.

Just edit so it looks like you aced it!

Hehe.

I've thought about it, but I already recorded a trailer and the Prologue cutscene, so I figured I would let someone else record the levels if they wanted.

Haha, yeah. That was just my Extreme Platforming instincts kicking in... I.E. everything electrified is out to get you.

That being said, difficulty isn't really an issue for me. I've played all kinds of difficult levels and there's only a few types of obstacles that I really have trouble getting through (namely, timed precision jumps and eye-of-the-needle electrical obstacles). So there's no need to worry about that when making recommendations.

Currently uploading Funky Bones II.

That seems to have already been recorded though.

When possible I'd like to avoid putting up videos that have already been recorded (but I may forget to check first).

I've uploaded The Rat Ruler's Castle, The Realm of the Ancients: I (from searching through showcase and recommendations) and Roller INC (because I managed to ace it).

Great idea, I'm in the process of trying to get a capture card myself. Anyway, I think a great one to record would be Nocturna Suppresio by angel-punishment.

If you need any others I'd suggest maybe Sky Factory 2 by steve-big-guns or the Land of Crumb series by Aselrahc.

I want to thank you all (well, again, since I have been using the thanks button!) for all the great suggestions. These levels have been pretty fun to play, and it's great to discover the variety and creativity that's out there in those 3 million levels.

I think this is such a cool thing to do. I'm sure it's already made a difference to some of the levels featured.

I want to suggest Mining Mishaps by Standby250. Despite being spotlighted it still has relatively few plays (only around 100 last time I looked). I think it suffered from being published just at the point MM disabled the rating system and never really recovered. It has some great puzzles, cool lighting, explosions and a mine cart ride. It also has 3 very well hidden secrets but I appreciate your video can't reveal those!

Anyway thanks again for doing all these videos!

Well I don't know about the plays, but the creators seem genuinely pleased to get a video of their level out of the blue.
The videos are getting a fair amount of views on youtube, and seem to be getting more as I record more videos. So that's pretty cool.

You must be God...
Hehe, thanks. I've died many times to make that video though (well, about 30 I guess, give or take). I still can't reach the second part of Day La Sled by h0tNstilettos, so I'm still not that good. I wouldn't record any of my runs of extreme difficulty levels because I die an embarrassing number of times. I would have to edit most of the deaths out and that could take a while. Plus I don't think it would be that interesting to watch.

I kind of regret not keeping all of the outtakes to make a kind of outtake reel like RoahmMythril does though. Maybe I'll do that the next time I try one of these ace runs.

Hmmm, well I'm sure it's just an oversight. I don't think people are going to bother reading all of the suggestions in the thread before posting even if I make it a rule, and having to keep the entire queue of levels I play would become unwieldy pretty fast. I agree that it could become a problem though, but it doesn't bother me at all. I'll know if I've played a level before, and I'll be able to concentrate on the other suggestions.

I've played Rat Alleys but I haven't recorded it. The reason is that I'm a bit undecided with how to handle level series. Ideally I don't want to record an entire level series, since they would tend to be very similar in style from one level to the next, so for now I've tried to select the "best" level in a series (in this case, Rat Ruler's Castle) and record it. I made an exception for Egypt: Karnak and Sacred Lake since it seemed more like a two-part level than an actual series.

Yes, I can see how recording a series might be repetitive and very long, but I think some series just need the whole thing recorded. You could also fit multiple levels in one video.2010-08-31 15:53:00

Hmmm well if people don't mind having many levels of a series recorded, I guess I could change my approach and just record levels regardless of their series.

I am still going to factor in the level's popularity before deciding to record and upload it before a lesser-known level though. A few more plays to a level with over 9000 plays isn't going to mean as much as a few more plays to a level with less than 500 after all.

Thankfully I think I only need to look back at hallm3's series and a couple of others. It should go smoothly from there.

Yeah, I don't think you would have much work to do with recording the rest of series that you only recorded one so far. On your YouTube account, maybe you could sort the videos into categories... (Tutorials, Series, etc). It may also be useful to add links to the OP...(Account, Videos).2010-08-31 18:38:00

Alright, I've uploaded the first two levels of hallm3's series as well as The Old Water Will and Multi Dimension 2.

I think I may need to set up an actual queue soon. I probably won't be able to record as many levels in the coming days because I need to prepare for University classes which start next week.
Re-learning Calculus... yay!

But I'm still going to try to record at least one level a day. Other than the actual playthrough, the rest of the process is mostly just waiting for videos to convert and upload, so it doesn't require much involvement.

Heh... Have fun in calculus!

As for the queue, I still think you need it sooner rather than later. You could always use Excel or a online spreadsheet to keep it organized just for yourself and then have some kind of list, in the OP. Did you ever think it was going to grow this fast? Not even a hamster has blown up yet!

Well, I'm glad with the response I've gotten. The numbers have actually been pretty manageable so far, and I've recorded 19 levels! It's also great that the rules have been followed for the most part.

I've created a basic spreadsheet to keep track of things and automatically sort levels by priority. I've also added the main queue in the OP. There is a secondary queue made up mostly of levels that already have a high number of hearts and plays which are lower priority.

Well, hopefully the queue will keep it manageable. If this really grows, what are you going to do? Collaborate with other people with PVR's?

I haven't really thought about collaborating. I know a lot of people who can record levels, but they tend to either be pretty busy or already have their own method going. I should be fine on my own for now, until LBP2 releases.

All I remember about the recording quality is that it's a resolution of 720 by something, and I set the bitrate to maximum. I convert the video from its native TS format into a WMV because I noticed on my first upload that sending the TS file to youtube made the audio go slightly out of sync. Plus it took something like 3 times longer for youtube to process the video after it's uploaded. It drops the bitrate slightly during the conversion, but I don't think there's much difference in the end.

I've uploaded Egyptian Journey and tried to hunt through the recommendations and showcase (I may need to adjust my search options again).

I'm assuming you mean 720p or 720i? You should try converting it to a MP4 instead of a WMV. It might get you some extra quality in there for both sound and video. The compression is a little bit worse though, nothing too bad.

Can it record in AVCHD instead of TS? Probably not because it isn't 1080i or 1080p.

K, just got back home. To answer your question more precisely, the video is recorded at 720x480 with a 10'000 KB/s bitrate. Audio is MPEG-1 L2 with a 384 kbps bitrate. I convert into the default WMV settings (1280x720, 8192Kbps 29.97 fps video, 128 Kbps 44100Hz audio).

I can create an AVCHD movie, but it seems to just take the .TS files (or any media file) and convert it into an MP4. It also seems to double the file size because it has a higher bitrate and resolution. I don't know whether it makes the video any different than the original file though.

I can tweak the settings higher for converting straight to WMV or MP4 (though WMV allows me higher values), but I'm not sure if it'll matter much since youtube processes the videos afterwards and turns it into an FLV anyway. Though I'm still admittedly new at this whole video recording thing.

YouTube will not turn it into a .flv if it is MP4. You can achieve great settings with MP4 and you don't have to use the highest.
What converter are you using (encoder/compressor/etc.)? I typically use Adobe Media Encoder (I think) and I love it. You can also export for Premier Pro as an MP4. The encoder/compressor does a great job.

The only problem is that it may not entirely fit your criteria as it has 1,000 plus plays already - I don't want any hamsters on my conscience! 2010-09-12 23:56:00

Don't worry, the hamsters are soundly sleeping at 1'000 plays. Besides, I mostly look at hearts before plays. Even levels with thousands of plays can have relatively few hearts. I still write down levels with high numbers of plays and hearts on my list, but they get placed on a secondary list. I haven't yet decided what to do with those levels. I may decide to record them eventually, but I place priority on all new suggestions and searching through the level showcase.

I've uploaded Honey Hive 3 (both parts), Archaic Ascension and Farewell Ruins of the Moon (found through search). There's no need to worry about my being overbooked on suggestions. You can let me worry about managing my free time, I'll still write down every suggestion on my list and get to them eventually.

I don't know how long is your list now but if you want one more suggestion I propose Sand Castle Chronicles (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=31642-Sand-Castle-Chronicles-%28LBW7%29) by littlebigdude8052010-09-13 22:52:00

Okay, I'll try being quiet now but that reminds me, sorry if it has over 1,000 plays, can't check right now but I absolutely loved Hungry Hoppers (LBW5) by littlebigdude805, one of the most unique survival challenges with a beautiful theme and was wondering if you could record that aswell, thanks

Edit: Got some more if that's okay. Here they are.

1. Steam-Paint - Locomotive Leviathan by croissantbuncake
2. Whispering Oak by xQziCyFlaMeZxQz

Thanks Okay, now I'll stop, at least until you get some new videos uploaded, since I don't wanna completely swamp you in levels to record

You might want to check out Circus L'amour by ptwob. He recently opened a thread for it in the Level Showcase but it hasn't had a lot of attention and that's a shame because the level is very cool. Lots of challenging circus act gameplay with some fun circus characters. It really deserves more plays!2010-09-20 17:53:00

Hey everyone! This is just a quick update to let you know that I'm still running the service and checking back regularly for new suggestions.

Don't be alarmed if I don't upload a video for a few days: coursework has gotten a bit more demanding lately, so I've had to scale down my recording times.

That's all for now. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Perceptive Dream by Vandz

Another level to add to your list for when you get a moment. It's the latest level by Vandz and his last too as he is joining the Royal Marines on Monday. Anyway, it's just brilliantly inventive - full of original gameplay ideas. Tricky at times and makes you stop and think too. I can't tell how much of an underdog level it's going to be as it's only just been published but I think it would probably qualify for your service. I should have checked his other levels for some sort of comparison. Even if you don't record it, you should give it a play anyway. I'm sure you'd enjoy it!

EDIT: Just spotted that Vandz has published a thread in the showcase for this level.

Having looked again, I'm afraid Vandz might be too popular a creator to warrant an underdog video. I think he has over 2,000 creator hearts so although it's a brilliant level and his last one, Wooden Perception (also brilliant), only got around 1,000 plays you might want to leave this one aside for now.

Also, the whole point of Zynax's Into the Castle Depths is that it's a challenging puzzle level where you solve problems in order to progress. It is possible he may not want a video which gives everyone the solution. It might be worth checking with him before recording. Sorry dragonvarsity!

@Dragonvarsity - I don't mind that you suggested my level for a recording. I think it would actually be kind of funny watching him try to get through the level, that is if it's his first time playing. Also, thanks Shropshirelass for showing concern about recording my level, for it is a puzzle level, and watching the video could potentially spoil the experience of solving the puzzles. Which perhaps, may cause the player to think less of the level when they are playing through it, but that situation really isn't of much concern to me.2010-10-13 22:09:00
