Haven't played any of your levels but I'll give them a try.

From the feedback though it sounds like your big hurdles are:

Fully realizing your ideas. Start with an idea, sounds good, then think about how you want that idea to flesh out in gameplay. How should these ideas be conveyed (through text, imagery, the actions of the player?) and can those ideas be conveyed clearly?

Practice with the corner editor. It sounds like you're using it, so I guess my suggestion here would just be to keep using it whenever possible. It's your best tool in this game by far.

Grammar and spelling. It might seem like it's not a big deal, but it's a simple fix that makes the difference between average and polished.

Playtest in play mode. Over and over. And while you're playtesting do everything you possibly can to break your level. Once you break it, go back and fix it so you can't break it again. Then go back into playmode and try to break it again. Keep doing it until everything runs as smoothly as possible. Then when you publish take the feedback you get. If it sounds like it's worth it, take that feedback and go back and fix the level. If it doesn't sound like it's worth it then too bad, go back and fix the level anyways.

If you want to make a level, make a level to be proud of. Keep working on it until you're satisfied.

All that said, I'mma go off and play some of your levels to give you actual feedback on 'em.

I wouldn't let just one bad feedback make you quit creating! My best accepted level on PSP (Shallow Springs) got the very worst feedback I have gotten on PSP! If you go read my thread, you will see that I got pretty bummed, but the level still did great. Everyone's feedback is their own opinion, and just because they don't like it doesn't mean that other people won't.

As an example, for the upcoming Race for the Case competition, someone posted their level thread here at LBPC and someone replied that the level was basically terrible. Just yesterday someone posted on my level thread for Greenie Go Home (my competition entry) that either I would win or the level that supposedly was terrible would win! So they must have REALLY liked the terrible level (or I would like to think that since I really hope they weren't comparing my level to a level they thought was terrible).

Everyone will feel different and you just have to learn to work through it. It is even harder starting off because there is so much to learn, but you will work it out. I just played my very first level I ever made with Taffey and Jeffcu on PS3 and I'm pretty sure they were laughing their heads off because it was so terrible. I think I even got a comment on it back in the day saying I should kill myself. People are just very opinionated, and sometimes they don't know when to hold their tongues. Don't let it get you down!

I hope that helps :-)

Hey awespme,

I just played my very first level I ever made with Taffey and Jeffcu on PS3 and I'm pretty sure they were laughing their heads off because it was so terrible.

Terrible is an understatement. Hehe. Imagine how a person on crack would make salieri's "Colossal Calamity," and you'll get poo's very first level. Taffey's and my first level were equally as bad, so much so that I deleted mines from embarrassment.

The truth is, LBP is a learning process, and we expect creators to get better over time. Honestly, I see this in you. I remember your "Habitat for Sackmanity" entry where you didn't corner-edit anything at all, and your most recent level, "the last two colors" where you not only corner-edited a bunch of shapes, but also had an erupting volcano, with an earthquake to boot! This is progress, and as long as you continue to improve, I see no reason to quit now.

And don't worry about "littering" the Community moon. There are levels a whole lot worse, particularly the level entitled The Epic Level: Anti-H4H Scorpians (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=20854-The-Epic-Level-Anti-H4H-Scorpians)...

People are just very opinionated, and sometimes they don't know when to hold their tongues. Don't let it get you down!

And what's even more annoying and ironic about these opinionated people is that they haven't published any "good" levels either. It's so easy to bash other people's works, but they fail to realize that making a quality level takes a lot of time and patience.

The only voices you need to listen to are those that give constructive feedback like SirPaper, and your own. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to slap myself for making something so ugly, so don't be afraid to criticize your own work and fix the problem until you're happy. If you follow these voices, I guarantee that you'll improve and be making Spotlight levels in no time.

Remember dude, like the old saying goes:

"You can pleas some of the people all the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time."
(And some of the people some of the time, which is simething he left out, but I felt like I should add. )

This applies very well to LBP, because not everyone will think alike, even the best levels in LBP will have bad reviews, (granted, most are out of jealousy, or some little punck trying to be a but still...).

Stopping to do something you like because others don't like it its no excuse.
Now if you're [b] only building for the people then its understandable of course, but you gotta remember, its your life, if you wann build, then build!
If you wanna stop building, then find something else you wanna do to do!

In other words, the choice shouldn't be up to them, it should be up to you!

Don't give up awespwe! You just need practise. I mean, if you compare my first level to my latest one, you can see a dramatic difference in quality.2010-08-27 20:08:00

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody. -Bill Cosby

Also, I'm sure everyone has some sort of epicly terrible first level (published or not). You just need to work really hard to make everything. It took me the better part of 3 months to create my first published level. It started off really bad but by the time I was done it was a decent level. Just take your time and get acquainted with all of the different tools and you should publish something you are proud of.

That is how I felt at first. I thought I couldn't make good levels, but then I practiced for months(look at my levels now). I mean really, creating is fun!

So if you want to be a good creator, PRACTICE BECAUSE IT IS FUN!!!

Lies I say! Never compare your levels with others, because Creativity is different in every Creator. Nay, every person!

Am I being a hypocrite? Yes, but I'd rather be the only one to say that than have someone else fall off their feet. It's the way this family works!

To be honest awespme, I think (notice how I said the word think in italic) everybody here knows each others usernames. It's just that we have a way of handing out our respect to each other differently.

I tend to give my respect to anybody, but only a certain amount. The rest needs time to build up. Think of it as your XP level. You can either keep my respect and gain more, or just be a bad apricot apple and lose.

Omg poo dont delete your first level whatever you do i wana play it (If i ever get a ps3) OH and lbp is awespme i played your last two colours level and it was much better than the others and i liked the sleeping character he was cool. but i do think you should stop trying to make a full story level and just go play around with the tools and make a level with fun obsticles Trust me! stop with the story levels for your first level even if you come up with a good story you will have wasted it on your first levels witch for everyone is pretty crap.

Thanks poo for making me feel like im missing out on fun because i dont have a ps3 lol.

Bad Analogy is Bad  . Moving on...

You shouldn't give up when people don't like your work. There will ALWAYS be someone who doesn't like it and that's okay, because they're entitled to their opinion. BUT you shouldn't take constructive criticism as bad feedback - they spent the time to play your level so if they give you feedback you should always try to listen to them and ask how it can be improved.

My first level felt like the best level EVAR to me but then I played Taffey's Leonard's levels and justly kicked myself. The entire level was basically almost everything on the How NOT to make a level list. So then I deleted it, and unpublished the monstrosity from the interwebz and went to work on studying on how to make a good level. After playing about 50 levels from great publishers I began playing around with create mode and learned the true potential of LBP PSP. I learned how important corner editing is, how logic works etc. So after about nine months (had lbp psp since november) I'm finally working on my first level (see sig) which is technically my 50 somethingeth level (god I hope It doesn't suck..)

But what do I know i never made a level yet

oh and BTW http://www.treehugger.com/caps-lock-priveldges.jpg

Hey lbp is awespme, I agree 100% with what Sketch said. Before anything, a level needs to be fun. Mess around with the tools some more, don't worry about an epic story. You need to know what your strengths are at creating, and go from there. And please, add music, any music to your levels. This is not an option. A level without music has no soul.2010-08-29 05:03:00

Nothing in this cartoon-and-metal world is easy of course.
And every thing that they have told you is almost right, but the MOST important think is what you think.
Don't you like creating?...then stop.
Do you like?...So take note of all the things that people can say about your levels, try to fix your mistakes, find an inspiration, let fly your sack-imagination and when YOU are completely happy with what you did....voil?!!! You have created a masterpiece that kicks the Mona Lisa right in the face, and NOBODY can say the opposite.
It is just my oppinion, as I've said, decision is yours.

You should have seen my first LBP PS3 level. I made 3 very terrible Monster Hunters ONLY using the brush tool. It was so cool when I made it back then. Though, when I looked at it now, I was embarrased. Infact, I took my 3 Monster Hunter levels off the community moon.

Then I bought LBP PSP a year later. I then met the corner editor tool. Yeah, I used it only once back then in the tutorial, but I forgot all about it when I entered Create Mode. On PSP, I met the corner editor. Since ther was no other way to draw without the grid, I used the Corner Editor here and out. Though, I still had much to learn. I created a 5 level series that you guys probably didn't know I had. I made a very bad series called "Hidden Planet." I have the level on my create moon still, but it was rather embarrassing to even keep on the community moon. Probably only a very, very few of you guys seen a level from the series. I also remember seeing Jeffcu28's first few LBP PSP levels. He took them off too.

The point is, you most likely won't enter create mode knowing everything to do Great. It takes practice and advice. Back then, thera weren't much PSP creators to boost my inspiration. Though, two of my very favorite author's feedback helped me soo much. Those two would be Amazingflyingpoo and Taffey. (No specific order.) A good creator had to start somewhere, right?

Anyways, I'll let this be up to your decision to quit or not.
All I will say is, I hope you make the right choice you want.

Now I'm starting to get how people made the best levels on lbp psp so soon after its release. They migrated from the ps3 version.

Anyway, look at my old psn: cory7101995
I have a level called LBP Origins. I thought it was the best level ever, and all it is is a lot of things made with the brush tool. No corner editing; just the brush. Now I look at my latest level: Robo's Tester. It is so good, that I have some people rating it 5 stars AND a heart!!! And all I did before that level was mess around in create mode.

The point:
Look at you first level. Now look at your last level.
...
Now you see the improvements.
That means you are getting better. All it takes is practice or just time messing around in create mode.

I don't have a PSP, so I'm not sure why I'm here, but I digress.

It seems you think your levels are bad?

The goal of creating should be to have fun. To make quality levels is a good goal too, but it should never be the main priority, especially if you are the kind of person that gets worked up at failing at your goal. You "can't make a good level no matter how hard you try"? More importantly, do you yourself think the level is good and are you having fun creating? If the answer is still "no", then maybe creating isn't for you. Try being a player by playing and reviewing levels, or be a sharer by being as active and helpful in the community as you can. If your answer is still "no" or "I don't want to", then hey, LBP isn't for you.

You don't need to treat level-making as a competition. Often, it only creates disappointment and frustration as you've demonstrated in this thread.
