Keyboard and Mouse support NOT in LBP2 at launch!

Archive: 56 posts

Yes, unfortunately, this feature will not be appearing at launch.

Fresh from Spaff;
http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/t5/General-Discussion/Getting-concerned/m-p/294898/highlight/true#M153602

Heya - this feature won't be in the game at launch, we've pulled it back so we can make sure it works really well - we had it working, but it needed a lot of tweaking and testing, and because we have a lot of other stuff to do it's gone tothe bottom of the list - it will get some attention though some time...

all of our designers prefer using the dualshock, and there are lots of awesome enhancements to create mode that make it a lot easier and faster now http://lbp.i.lithium.com/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Why? WHY?!?!?!

Because there's only so much time to get things done before release so they'll get all the main things needed for the game to work finished and patch any extras in later.

Besides, its regular for Mm to leave something out! Just look at the ice hazard!

Wait, we can still use the keyboard at LBP2's launch for communications purposes right? (like with LBP1 when chatting with friends)2010-08-25 19:51:00

Yes, he is just talking about waiting to release kb and mouse create support.

I didn't really care for the mouse, but I was looking forward to possible keyboard hotkeys. Guess I'll have to wait. (and it may not even include that!)2010-08-25 19:59:00

Tablet support would be amazing...

It would be much easier than keyboard and mouse in my opinion. I would like to guess that if more people actually owned tablets, they would include it. We can only wish....

Keyboard and mouse is a step in the right direction though...

Yes you're right, they should leave stuff in even if it doesn't work to have more people complain about that, instead of getting it to work the best possible first, huh? :/

Yeah....you're right, sucks for us who can writte a short text in under 2mins huh?

Kinda annoyed about that, but if they've made creating with the dualshock easier and faster then it's not going to bother me too much.

Plus, it saves me having to figure out where I'm going to put a keyboard and mouse in my already cluttered TV area

That's what I was thinking. I've been debating trying to find a cheap 27" or 30" monitor with hdmi in to use for my PS3, set it up like it's a PC or something.

Control group keys will help me keep track of everything, though it's already really intuitive already. Start with the basics, right?

Though this could lead to the feature never actually coming out.

As much as you guys think keyboard/mouse support will be amazing, it really isn't if you think about it.
On the Dualshock, everything is there in one place. That's what it's designed for.
I guess if you're one of those insane PC-only gamers you might find it more useful, but the gamepad just seems right to me.

Drawing with a mouse seems so much more intuitive. Keyboard hotkeys and shortcuts ;_;

It's okay though. I was fine with the Dualshock. I will wait upon this blessed feature.

I think this was largely due to familiarity though. I reckon if MM had given us mouse and keyboard support from day 1, I'd be using it. As it is, it'd take to long to adjust back from months of the dualshock...

All I really wanted a keyboard for was the same reason as LBP1, talking, so hopefully that'll still be at launch. Having said that, I'm sure we'll be so busy messing around with the new stuff that before we know it we'll get an update and it'll be there.2010-09-13 20:50:00

Trust me, once they get mouse and keyboard input fully integrated, I don't think anyone will use the controller except for playing the level. It all depends on how they set it up thou. I hope they make all the hotkeys changeable. Or have something like right click and drag in and out to change layers, right click for settings, properties, materials and such. All im saying is they gotta be smart with the setup, or give us the ability to change all of it.2010-09-14 19:45:00

No. I like the DS3. And I will end up still using it alot. I can see why a mouse might be useful, but I find mice are more imprecise,

As for the keyboard... I have the DS3 keypad.

Uh... A mouse more Imprecise? A Mouse is 10 times more accurate and precise. If you ever play any FPS on a PS3, then try the same game on PC, you will definitely see how much better the PC is at quickly aiming. Photo Shop would be a huge hassle with a DS3, and LBP level editing and Photoshop are pretty similar.

Sure, whatever, but hooking up mice is a hastle, and, I like my DS3.

I am excited for this feature, just because I like the option of being able to use a keyboard and mouse...both could come in handy during create mode. Having to wait is not big deal, considering we had to wait for online create on LBP1, which I would say is a much more exciting feature...waiting for this will be no problem.2010-09-15 22:17:00

really this feature isn't "really" needed, there are more important things to do right now... so i guess it is just a waiting game.

I don't believe for a second that the MM developers would prefer making levels with DualShock instead of a proper mouse & keyboard setting. Now, if the mouse & kb controls are somehow screwed up, sure, but when working properly it should bring a tenfold increase in efficiency.

You just can't beat hotkeys and the increase in cursor speed that mouse & kb combo provide.

I wasn't aware you could really use the mouse much in create mode, and so you can use the keyboard for communication purposes but NOT in create mode? So I can't type dialog in my levels via keyboard? WTH, why?! How is that any different than basic keyboard communication. :/2010-09-16 00:47:00

Huh? of course you could type dialog via keyboard. The keyboard feature being talked about is doing stuff, like using hot keys in create mode to make creating easier.

It's possible, but in honesty, I really don't think that they pushed back the release date to add features. They can add new stuff at any time for as DLC and updates.

The pushback is to fix the features that are already there and maybe add in a few bits here and there.

You're free to disbelieve it, but I'm pretty sure I've heard Alex Evans say that all Story Mode Levels ARE made using the same tools the players will have. That they wanted to make sure they didn't have an advantage over the community. And specifically stating that most of their level builders preferred the DualShock. (EDIT: I'll try and find a link to one of those convos.)

Before the rejoinder, I got it: the people doing heavy lifting in the background-building textures, physics-those guys are darned sure using a mouse and keyboard (actually, probably a stylus). And that's probably what you meant.

But let me present the opposite view. I did not grow up playing games on a PC, so using a keyboard and mouse to navigate isn't faster for me. If that makes you more likely to beat me in an FPS, so be it. I wanna build bricks of dissolve and wire stuff to 'em. I'm pretty sure LBP2, with or without the mouse, lets players rotate the camera more in popit, and do other things to let us get at hard-to-reach areas.

Since LBP2 is a console game, they're gonna cater to my type before they cater to yours. Since I doubt there will be stylus support anytime before LBP3, the only new functionality the mouse would give us would be improved corner editing. Yes, drag boxes would be faster. Yes, I can see people tabbing through cursor types without opening popit. But I think most people use the interface they learn first, until it becomes impossible to use without an upgrade. Humans are dumb that way.

Yeah, I remember hearing Alex say the level designers station is a PS3 with a DS3 controller, a copy of LBP2, a tv and nothing else. He also said they are trying to do a no cheating policy. Meaning, they are only using what we'll have. So since KBM isn't ready, we don't have it, thus they don't have it.

Even now, LBP2's DS creation system is probably miles ahead the KBM in terms of stability and completeness; the level designers definitely prefer it. They "cheated" sometimes in LBP1 because it was their first game and the tools weren't ready for creation when they needed to design the levels.2010-09-25 04:51:00

I pondered that too. But I suspect Sony is secretly grinding its teeth that LBP2 is going to miss Christmas. That trumps everything.

They may well demand more Move features in exchange for letting LBP2 slide back. But I doubt it was the cause.
