The Origins of Dark Matter

Archive: 18 posts

So I came upon this idea two days ago, and I think I'm going to pursue it soon.

*The level will be sort of a "mythos" of Dark Matter. That is, it will talk about how, at the start of Little Big Planet's creation, there were the original materials (cardboard, sponge, wood, stone, etc.) and then appeared the Dark Matter; something about opposition and a war, and the Dark Matter being banished.
*This is a temple where DM is highly revered and is not required to be hidden.
*The level will be something along the lines of the elemental temples from Zelda (or almost every RPG ).
*The monks (cultists?) will compare the glories of Dark Matter with normal matter and with anti-matter (a giant, trippy black hole contained in a room ).
*The level will not be made of dark matter. It will have a fair amount in the Temple itself, though.
*There will be a magical ritual required to get the DM to move to the Temple (Thanks to Rogar).
*There will be an opposing (good?) force called Light Matter (Thanks to Rogar).

So I'm looking for ideas:
-Any particularly awesome uses of DM (puzzles, platforming, emitting, whatever!)
-Concepts for the monks/cultists/dudes (maybe they have robes of dark matter?)
-Maybe a boss (something to do with normal- or anti-matter?)
-Any other cool things you can think of!

Due to the limited properties of DM, I'll probably be using some of the glitched materials from Aya's Garden of Goodies. So don't hold back on suggestions that require DM to do things that it normally can't.

It might be a few weeks since I'm still working on Part III of the Commander Keen saga, but I figure if I start planning now... it'll go faster when I start creating the level!

Well, normally you can't move dark matter, so maybe you could show some magical ritual or something which allowed them to get the dark matter to the temple. And maybe there's an extremely rare variety called light matter? 2010-08-25 15:16:00

Ooh, I like that! Both of those! I'll put them in my notes. Makes me wonder if November (LBP2) is soon enough to wait for the light material, or if I should just go with an LED and an extremely reflective surface.

Or maybe dark matter stickered white with a bright spotlight or something?2010-08-25 15:37:00

Maybe, though (at least in my experience, this may not always be the case) you have to do some weird stuff to DM to sticker it. Granted, I'll be using glitched materials anyway... *thinks*

Well, I'll definitely keep it in mind. That way I have a couple options when I get around to it.

You can emit dark matter into another piece of dark matter OR normal matter attached to dark matter.
basically, by emiting, you can "fuse" as many pieces of DM into eachother. Great for conveyor belts.
info from Moderator rtm.

Yeah, I remember reading his emitter theory! I'll read up on that and experiment around with different stuff (maybe a conveyor, an escalator, or a DM waterfall). Thanks for the suggestion!

The 'Light Matter' could be floaty material with a white sticker? This would add some more gamplay, like hang gliding or... just... floating.. I guess.2010-08-28 22:39:00

Ooh! Yeah... floaty isn't used a whole bunch. I think it would fit wonderfully. If only there was a shiny sticker... or, actually, I could easily use more glitched material. Or I could wait for LBP2 and work with antigravity. But I love the idea of hang gliding and floating and such. Thanks!

This is a very good idea due to the fact that DM is the odd material I would love to play this level when its done!

If you need a beta tester I would be happy to test!

I thought dark matter was made out of that green stuff with some hi-tech devices...
At least that is what the logic pack taught me

Umm so anyway, this sounds really cool! Ineteresting fact, I have been wanting to do a level based on dark matter in a way or another...

You should make your logic visible, if you use any, to add to the DM experience!

For the monks, instead of their robes being dark matter, maybe you could make them move around on floating 'clouds' of it being emitted...?

Woohoo! Thanks. Yeah, I can always use testers! Just so you know, though, it'll probably be quite some time before this level gets almost finished. A few months, likely.

Thanks, man! I'm glad you like the idea.

I'll consider the logic thing; I have to be careful about that, because people will go "Oh, he didn't hide his logic, dummy" instead of thinking it's funny. But now that you mention it, since I'm creating characters based on all the materials, I could create a logic character.

I think the monks will still have DM robes, but I might just put the grandmasters on DM clouds.

If you want dark matter to be movable for this you just place a complex decoration over and over on the corner of a piece of dark matter and it becomes movable. Sorry if that was random.2010-08-29 00:23:00

Alternatively, you can check out Aya042's level, Garden of Goodies. It has a collection of material glitches (or cow glitch materials), which includes a material that moves like floaty material, but looks identical to Dark Matter. He has every possible combination of materials, thusly.

For what it's worth, it's what we used in the Logic Pack.

Thanks man! I didn't know that. I already have quite a few samples of movable DM already, though.

Already been there and got 'em in my popit and intend to use 'em! Mentioned it in the OP. I think I went originally because I wanted lava material, but of course discovered tons of useful stuff there. I've even got bubbles made out of "rubber" floaty in the next Keen installment.

EDIT: I thought about it, and I can't for the life of me figure out what glitched material you used in the Logic Pack or why.

I'm guessing he meant that they used glitched dark matter like material when they showed you how dark matter was produced - obviously, because dark matter cannot usually be moved or anything.

Sounds like an awesome idea, count me in for the beta testin'!
I'll see if I can think of some good juicy ideas for yah, maybe have the temple of DM floating on mid-air? Sorry if that was a bit obvious maybe lol, but I'll be glad to help out for testing. I always had the tendency to break a level the first chance I get with it.
