physical rope

Archive: 23 posts

I was really bummed when i realized that the string in LBP1 was non physical. For all intensive purposes, it simply held stuff together. I wanted to make things like pulleys and swings where you hit something half way up the rope and then begun to swing faster.

So, with that in mind, as there been any acknowledgment/talk/rumor of any kind of physical rope for LBP2? Something string like that you could grab and would actually react with the world around it?

Afraid not. To my knowledge, it's going to be the same as LBP1.

(PS- The phrase isn't "all intensive purposes", it's "all intents and purposes". )

You can do that if you attach the string to a tiny, invisible and grabbable piece of material. I made a tutorial that explains how to do it ---> https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=32403-Small-invisible-amp-GRABBABLE-material

I was about to say that as well.

also a vertical and horizontal climbing animation would be good especially for a low tech physics based level2010-08-23 16:17:00

Not as fluid.

Plus I don't think what you're going for is quite the same...2010-08-23 18:14:00

I don't think it'd be possible m8, think how much a rope moves, if you let it fall, when it tangles up, too many factors into its movements and whatnot.
Who knows, they may be able to make it, but i dobut they will, but still [rretty sure they gave the rope no physical properties for a reason m8.

I'd love to have a tweak with the string about if it is to "arc" if there's any loose in it.
Doesn't seem too hard to calculate.

fluid models are very complicated.

This is the same reason they will not have dynamic water.

Wait really? Wow, I've been saying it wrong for a long long time then hahaha. Well, i guess I learned something today. Thanks mate!

The arc-ing maye not, but what if it falls?
Wouln't it just act more like a wobbly stick rather than a rope?

True that. It would be nice though if they give ropes, winches, rods, pistons, and elastic bands a setting for grabbable or not.

You know how you can make "grabbable rope" (using the shrunk material trick)?

That means we'll be able to make "grapple-able" rope, too. Right?

On topic:

I don't think it's that hard to calculate. In fact, I know it's not. If you've ever used a physics simulation program such as endorphin, you'll soon realize that "floppy rope" (or however you want to describe it) is not that difficult to calculate. If my old laptop could simulate it in real-time (with other physics simulations going on as well), I don't see any reason the PS3 wouldn't be easily capable.

Thank you Alex! And It's also only in two dimensions, so it would be even easier. And also, they could cheat a little. It doesn't have to be perfect. If it falls, i could care less waht it looks like. It just wont make it fall hahaha2010-08-24 00:21:00

Good point, I never even thought about that! It doesn't need to calculate movement backwards/forwards, just side to side, so that means calculation would be even easier. I agree

Its not the same. I want something that IS rope, not something that you can tell is make shift rope put roughly together. Besides, if you had that many things put together, the game wouldn't be able to calculate it all correctly and it would spazz a lot.

With the "not THAT fluid" rope I was thinking something alike the Popit cursor, the neon popit-colored line that Sackboy has in his hands and controls the Popit and the Cursor with.

And thanks for the support!
