tips on how to make a decent horror level

Archive: 14 posts

1. Always have a good theme.
Most people tend to do a haunted hospital, which is fine but it gets old real fast. DO SOMETHING UNIQUE!!!!!!! Like a haunted forest or a haunted museum(which would be interesting). Make sure you make the place look abandon such as destroyed glass, torn up wallpaper, flickering lights etc.
2. Keep it dark but not too dark, you dont want people to complain"ITS TOO DARK I CANT SEE!!!!!!!!" just keep it dark enough so that you can see while still in a creepy atmosphere,
3. USE THE 3D GLITCH TO YOUR ADVANTAGE This is especially helpful for indoors and outdoors. This helps make your level look more realistic. This allows you to make hallways, a big cafeteria etc
4. ADD SOME LIGHTS But dont add too much or it wont look that scary no more.it would be better if some of the lights were flickering to make it more realistic.
5. DONT ABUSE THE FOREBODING SOUND i see too many levels were ever time theres a scare, they use that sound. Its gets annoying and i lose the scare. Make it unsuspecting, a good example is xX-Delirium-Xx's Morbid DespairART1. The scares were unsuspecting.
6. TURN OFF THE DAM MUSIC!!!!!!!!! This is probably the most important one. unless its really necessary like a boss fight, music takes the scary atmosphere out and also just makes it like "the darkness" in the wedding levels.
EDIT: 7 PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR IS THE BEST HORROR not ever horror needs blood and gore to scare you. I mean its not really scary if i see arms and limbs covered in blood and there all over the floor. Remember the mind is a tricky one. Make something that is guarantee to make some one paranoid.
hopefully these guidelines will help you and who knows the next big scary level can be from you!

Something else, that goes in part with one of your rules. Don't make your level too dark, darkness can make a great horror effect, but too much darkness can be aggravating for the player, because no one likes to strain their eyes to look around.2010-08-22 21:55:00

One thing to remember is that people have all sorts of configurations on their TV machines.
So for example, over at my friend, you can barely see a thing on his TV when you got darkness maybe two notches from the darkest setting.
Darkness is fine, but outside of fatal frame, I rarely see near pitch black horror.

Another thing is that many horror levels use rusty metal and bright white lights to get the mood across, while that is fine, not every horror level out there needs to borrow silent hill 3s motif.

I think it was on an old level called descent 2, that my favourite example of horror in LBP is.

You walk along, dragging a torch and as you walk past a pillar of rock you see a strange, gollum'y type sillohouette, but you're still moving and can't react to it fast enough.

You stop, go back, and it's gone 0.o
