'Nocturne' *SPOTLIGHTED*
Archive: 68 posts
'Nocturne'IceMaiden http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j120/richergraphics/APhoto_1-5.jpgCo-created with my son, Khalith_, this is my picture-book portrayal of 'The Firebird' story from 'Fantasia' set to the music 'Nocturne', composed by Rolf Lovland. Following a long winter, a beautiful Spring Sprite is awakened by her faithful companion, a noble elk. As she attempts to restore life to the forest, the sprite accidentally awakens the Firebird Spirit of a nearbly volcano, innocently unleashing a powerful force of nature. Angered, the Firebird destroys everything in her path, seemingly including the sprite. After the destruction, the diminishing sprite is restored to life by her loyal companion, and forest life is reborn with her. http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j120/richergraphics/APhoto_14.jpg http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j120/richergraphics/APhoto_5-4.jpg Special thanks to Khalith_, without whom this would be another walkthrough! Extra special thanks to mistervista and mrsvista for their tireless support, encouragement and expert advice, and for spotting my deliberate mistakes! Of course, many thanks to Rhy for his technical assistance and for letting me drive him mad for the past 9 months! Also thanks to geddez for play testing and not breaking anything! After many months of corner editing, stickering and tearing my own hair out, here at last I present to you 'Nocturne', a music level. I have left a little piece of my heart and soul in it. Another marvellous, musical and visual spectacle Icey You have chosen a beautiful piece of music to use in this level and your heart and soul are clearly visible in the wonderful visuals you have crafted. It has been a joy for mrv and I to watch this level progress from start to finish and I must say the finished article is brilliant, well done. Khalith_ has once again made an excellent job of the music in the level and your portrayal of this lovely story with your amazing characters and stickering talents is just perfect. The music alone brings a tear to my eye, when I hear it. Mr Rhy must also get a mention for his part in this awesome level :star::star::star::star::star: and a great big <3 To celebrate the publishing of your level, I'm going to have a lovely bowl of leek soup! | 2010-08-20 22:06:00 Author: mrsvista Posts: 755 |
To celebrate the publishing of your level, I'm going to have a lovely bowl of leek soup! Lololooloo mrsv! I'm sorry, leek soup is off the menu! | 2010-08-20 22:24:00 Author: IceMaiden Posts: 1057 |
If there's a piece of your heart and soul in it, does that mean it's a horcrux? :/ Had fun with the music on this one, and I must say you've more than done it justice with the visuals! Looks so beautiful it's brought a tear to me eye. ^^ | 2010-08-20 22:31:00 Author: Khalith_ Posts: 16 |
Another stunning creation by a very stunning creator! This level ooses quality from every pore (or stitch in sackboy's case). The music is hauntingly beautiful and the visuals.... omg the visuals... I wept... seriously. I am so glad you made this music level and can really say all the hard work has paid off. I love you! Rhy | 2010-08-21 00:52:00 Author: Rhyfelwr Posts: 606 |
I played this level and it was amazing, the detail was outsatding and I loved how you made such an amazing level with great pictures and the song was awesome You definitely deserve :star::star::star::star::star:, <3 and a mention on my blog. Great job. | 2010-08-21 01:00:00 Author: Dragonvarsity Posts: 5208 |
Wonderful work again Icey. Thankyou for letting me and mrsv share the experience of seeing this masterpiece take shape. It's an honour to be able to help, even in a small way, such a talented creator. The visuals are breathtaking of course and I know full well how much heart and passion you've put into this level, not to mention many many hours of hard work. Be assured that it was all worth it because you have created yet another spectacularly beautiful and emotional experience. Your creation skills and Khalith's musical prowess are a powerful combination and to quote Rhyfelwr it is "hauntingly beautiful" and leaves me with a lump in my throat every time I play it. Before you started this level I didn't know anything of the 'Fantasia' story or the music but having seen it since on youtube I'm glad you opened my eyes to it and you have more than done it justice. Congratulations Icey. I hope the level is a great success for you, it certainly deserves it. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you, Khalith and Rhy come up with in LBP2 with all the new tools. That is something to savour. | 2010-08-21 01:14:00 Author: mistervista Posts: 2210 |
Dang, now im torn between Frog Chorus and this level . The visuals were so good for a music level and music just brung the visuals to life. It was like a silent story book(silent as in no words were spoken XD). This level has the complete package. Definately 5 stars and a heart. Good work you two! | 2010-08-21 01:39:00 Author: L1GhTmArE Posts: 519 |
Wow. I think you've really outdone yourself with this level. I could really feel the story and emotion in each of the scenes. It really shows that every single part was carefully and masterfully crafted. I found myself riveted to the screen, trying to take it all in. It was very beautiful. The music blended really well with the imagery and helped to set the tone and connect all of the scenes together. The flow of the music also seemed surprisingly natural, though maybe that's simply my impression. Overall an amazing, impressive and beautiful work of art. :star::star::star::star::star: and <3'd | 2010-08-21 01:52:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |

Not my kind of level to be honest as i'm an action junky yet even i could appreciate the beauty here, very nice job indeed. https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=33728-Metal-Gear-Solid-Boss-Truck-Adventure Could you check my one out please? | 2010-08-21 03:11:00 Author: beakeroo Posts: 27 |
That is bliss through, and through! I can't think of anything I didn't just go nuts about! you can take this one off my hearted list when you pry it from my PS3's cold dead hard drive! | 2010-08-21 04:55:00 Author: swanbrown Posts: 898 |

I got to play the level, and it was beautiful!!! Lovely music and lovely decorating. Almost shed a tear 5 :star:s and a <3 | 2010-08-21 11:43:00 Author: moonwire Posts: 1627 |
Played this today, wowed by the visuals. Intro image was impressive, then it got even better. I don't know the music/story, so I can't really comment on that, but everything else was beautiful. My fav bits was the stag silhouettes, they are spot on. Oh, and that water splash + floating leaves too. | 2010-08-21 11:47:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |
You and Khalith have yet again created a real work of art here, Icey. The beautiful music and the amazing visuals combine so well to tell the story. The tableaux were so expressive and conveyed so much emotion. As soon as I?d finished playing I had to restart just to experience it all over again and be sure I hadn?t missed anything. I loved the firebird at the start and both the elk and the sprite were wonderfully drawn and stickered. The returning of greenness and water to the burnt world was beautifully and sparely done too ? a real case of less is more. I loved the whole thing. You have such an enormous talent for this type of level. You have trodden your own unique and beautiful road in LBP and the game is infinitely the richer for it. Thank you. | 2010-08-21 12:21:00 Author: shropshirelass Posts: 1455 |

Thanks to everyone for the lovely comments. I am really pleased with the way my level has been received. I was sooooo nervous about publishing, I wasn't sure if anyone would like it. Icey | 2010-08-21 13:16:00 Author: IceMaiden Posts: 1057 |
Oh, it's an awesome masterpiece-- and calling it a horucrux (even in jest!) is pretty spot-on. I could see you in the sprite Icey... world bearing down and again in the stag. The line art is so strong and tight and your stickering really wonderful. (Please oh please tell me that is a custom gradient white-- because I could never use it to that extent so neatly.) It is very odd. Your levels have the most remarkable line art, die cut laserbeam percision, yet so heavy with soul. Percision + Patience x Conviction. Are you part-machine??? it'd explain a few things... stars 'n' bars and hearts for the tragic triumphant tart. You do have a style and process all your own... heck you even have your own team assembled. This would be my favorite of the three music levels... actually got a cooing "Oh nice!" when I inadvertently stepped into 'the ride mechanic'... very slick this time... Love the source material... Agreed with almost all the 'key frames'. NOW (Did anyone else just here a thunderbolt sound effect? No... must, just be me then.) So again, the frustrating thing for me is... in my mind... the hoof paws at the ash, embers stir, shoulders struggle to fight the gravity of despair, like a scared lover a hand reaches out tenderly caressing muzzle, the transference of strength... In my mind you give me this wonderful ballet of motion-- that's what I long to see captured... however much I want it, I still have you to thank for giving me those 'inbetween' still frames... It an amazing gift... thank you. Really liked the melodic fades by the way... and the valentine's paper never looked soooo good! I felt the triumph and the tragedy. | 2010-08-21 14:33:00 Author: Gravel Posts: 1308 |

Does that mean you like it then Gravel! It is a standard gradient white, among other things of course, it depends on which bit! Not sure if anyone else will hear the thunderbolt, I hope not, there isn't one! Reading your beautiful, tender description of the scene conjured up those images in my mind too Gravel, I too saw the gestures. How I wish I could have delivered in that respect. I am, at least, glad I gave you something. Oh and it's a long time since I was called a tart! Thanks again to everyone. You are all so kind! Icey | 2010-08-21 17:31:00 Author: IceMaiden Posts: 1057 |
Hello IceMaiden, and Khalith_- This was a beautiful level. I love the innovative use of materials and stickers, I never would have thought that the gradient stickers could look so amazing! The part that showed the elk breathing (using gas for that was brilliant) litteraly felt cool, I even started to feel a little chilly myself! This level felt magical, the kind that I get from watching that Disney movie, Brother Bear, it had that heart warming, natural feel. :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3, of course. | 2010-08-21 17:48:00 Author: X-FROGBOY-X Posts: 1800 |
I was in create mode yesterday, and didn't spend a whole lot of time, but seems like everytime I did it popped up a message saying one of my friends had completed "Nocturne". Naturally, I had to check it out. Breathtaking and mesmerizing. The music track doesn't miss a note, and the pictures you've crafted to tell the story have perfect lines and colors... No small feat considering how clunky the stickers can be to work with. Stunning. | 2010-08-21 18:05:00 Author: SpeedyMcKnuckles Posts: 331 |

Ooo I've heard so many great things about this level. I'm going to have to play this tonight. | 2010-08-21 23:10:00 Author: ShamgarBlade Posts: 1010 |
Really beautiful level Icey! The music was really nicely done and the visuals are top notch as always. Loved how you have the rocks angled and that they play up the texture of the wood you used. The stag is gorgeous. Rendered so beautifully. Loved it. Played it on my alternate account but I'll heart it on the Morgy one tonight! | 2010-08-21 23:19:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
Absolutely lovely! The visuals are stunning and I genuinely thought there was soul behind that elk! I can't wait until LBP2 comes out so the music can really shine also not sure why but it did make me sad for some reason, it stirred some emotion, great job! :star::star::star::star::star: and a big heart | 2010-08-21 23:20:00 Author: OneEyedBanshee Posts: 1370 |
Played it on my alternate account but I'll heart it on the Morgy one tonight! Thank you! I like 'Morgy' too! Love you new sig! also not sure why but it did make me sad for some reason, So sorry, I didn't mean to make you sad! Icey | 2010-08-21 23:45:00 Author: IceMaiden Posts: 1057 |
Definitely an instant 5 stars and heart! What impressed me the most was the intricate shading on the elk along with the flawless shapes everywhere, like the jagged wood near the beginning or the smooth curves on the hills at the end. The characters were perfect, the song was beautiful, the lighting was smooth and powerful, and not one part of the level felt incomplete to me. | 2010-08-22 00:02:00 Author: Incinerator22 Posts: 3251 |
I'm not familiar with the source material but it's definitely the most polished music level i've experienced the images are so detailed I really enjoyed your other music levels as well this is the best one yet | 2010-08-22 19:11:00 Author: DayFul Posts: 26 |
This level is absolutely gorgeous! The imagery, the music, the story told through incredible visuals..... Wow! One con.... There were no thrupnies..... Not a one..... Nope..... I looked several times..... Also, the gameplay may be a bit tricky for beginner players..... Many many stars and a heart! | 2010-08-22 21:38:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
One con.... There were no thrupnies..... Not a one..... Nearly fell off my chair! Maybe that's where you're going wrong Cubbage, they usually come in pairs! Have you tried keeping both eyes open? wow! I had seen this one posted a few days ago and now that i finally got a chance to try it out... the music and visuals were incredible! It really was a pleasure to play through! | 2010-08-23 14:39:00 Author: koneko Posts: 95 |
This level is amazing i love everything you made because it looks perfect, the music was cool, nice job. My only objection is that the scoreboard doesn't work for 4 players. Overall 5* and a heart, i tagged artistic, keep it up! | 2010-08-23 17:59:00 Author: ferrrch Posts: 429 |
My only objection is that the scoreboard doesn't work for 4 players. Sorry you had problems with the scoreboard ferrrch, it worked fine when four of us play tested it. I will attempt to sort that out, thanks. Icey | 2010-08-23 19:22:00 Author: IceMaiden Posts: 1057 |
What else can I say than "WOW".... this level isn't just beyond LBP - this level is pure art. The story-telling, the absolutely "out-of-this-world" characters/creatures (oh my god), the music and the emotional side of this level. I played tons of levels but no other level pull me in in a heart-touching way like your levels do Icey. I didn't "play" this one - I get lost in this amazing detailed world. The volcano at the beginning, the elk on the cold moutain, the girl with the gorgeous hair and all these beautiful landscapes. Wonderfull job Icey, just wonderfull!!! :star::star::star::star::star: and of course <3 Neo | 2010-08-23 22:43:00 Author: (___NEO___) Posts: 206 |
Well, I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said... this was probably the most artistic work i've seen on LBP. It was like drifting through a painting/poem. I was very sad to see that tiny scoreboard....I wanted to stay in your world... 5/5 | 2010-08-24 05:08:00 Author: Lockstitch Posts: 415 |
I played this yesterday, and I have to say that this was the best music level I've seen. I absolutely loved how artistic this level was. It was beautiful. :star::star::star::star::star: and <3 | 2010-08-24 05:17:00 Author: ShamgarBlade Posts: 1010 |
I was very sad to see that tiny scoreboard....I wanted to stay in your world... 5/5 There was much deliberation about the scoreboard. The normal sized one seemed so obtrusive. I was hoping the small one gave some perspective. Perhaps I made the wrong decision on that one. Thank you. Edit: Forgive me Lockstitch, I misunderstood. It was a lovely thing to say, thank you. I can't thank all of you enough for the wonderful comments. I love this community. Icey | 2010-08-24 09:45:00 Author: IceMaiden Posts: 1057 |

I can't thank all of you enough for the wonderful comments. I love this community. Icey I don't think Lockstitch was complaining about the scoreboard size Icey. The way I read it I got the impression he simply meant he didn't want to see the finish and wanted the experience to go on longer. If that's right I have to agree with him, it's a shame to have to exit the level. Don't worry about it, it's fine as it is. | 2010-08-24 12:02:00 Author: mistervista Posts: 2210 |

I'd never played an Icemaiden level before, although I've always intended to because everyone always says how beautiful they are. Well, I finally got around to it and I'm so glad I did. The aesthetic was absolutely stunning, and the tale really tugged on the ol' heart strings too. I don't care about the lack of gameplay, because this level is a visual treat all of it's own. You have a gorgeous artistic style there and if your not already an illustrator by profession then you need to seriously consider a career change. :star::star::star::star::star:<3 | 2010-08-25 17:49:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |

This level is a masterpiece. Honestly, you shouldn't worry that anyone wouldn't like it. From the hours I've seen your PSN in create mode, you can tell you've been hard at work. This felt like a story, woven from a thread of LBP, but so much more beautiful than almost everything else I've ever encountered. Everything is accounted for, and no detail is left to chance, which has really become a hallmark of your levels. This level in particular had some outstanding visuals. The sticker usage is one of the biggest things you'll notice if you play this, because there is a tonne of time going into each choice, and every part is covered perfectly. Basically, I loved it. The visuals are just amazing, and very few creators can compete. Also a big shout out to Kalith_ as the music is also top-notch :star::star::star::star::star: and a giant <3 | 2010-08-27 23:18:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |

Amazingly beautiful and an oh so touching story. Really moved me to a tear or two. I loved the phoenix at the beginning amd wow.. the elk was errr ummm 'stag'gering and uhh en'deer'ing. Oh wait.. that was an elk. lol Sorry.. I had to do that.. lol Seriously though, just amazing work on all the above. Amazing cool artwork and in this one you really did do this in storybook style which was incredible and stunning. I also loved the charming music so eloquently crafted by your son. The combination not only charmed, but melted my heart once again as all your work does. Breathtaking!! Congrats Icey... Lovely as always and so so classy as ever. I finally got to enjoy your latest masterpiece. Icey, your story characters and the way/position/posture.. (whatever you want to say) in which you portray them - and their faces! - is perfect. Simple as that. They are just so evocative and those scenes from the elk's arrival at the sprite's side, to where she's huddled up behind the strength and protection of his horns, actually made me quite emotional. Here I am tearing up just thinking about it! To be honest - at first I was a little disappointed that some of your gorgeous demolished woodland scenes didn't have more elaborate lighting to highlight the shapes, but on a second playthrough, where I focused more on the scene than the characters, I got it. the subtle sky lighting was stunning and yes, like Lass said (or whoever... oops) less can definitely be more. Thanks to you and Khalith for another beautiful adventure. Thankyou. | 2010-08-29 22:16:00 Author: BabyDoll1970 Posts: 1567 |

To be honest, I haven't played it yet without shedding a few tears and I know what's coming! lol. Icey I'm not surprised Icey, it is that sort of level. I think anyone with any emotion would be moved by the combination of breathtaking visuals and haunting music. Of course I'm a man so it didn't really affect me. As I told mrsv, I just had something in my eye that's all It's strange though how I always seem to get something in my eye whenever I play it. It must be all those burning embers, I blame that firebird | 2010-08-31 01:00:00 Author: mistervista Posts: 2210 |
same with me MrV but it wasn't something in my eye it was just the roof was leaking thats all | 2010-08-31 09:41:00 Author: geddez12 Posts: 338 |
Great story telling level. The illustration is well crafted and the moving log really changes the pages. It's like watching "Fantasia 2000" all over again. It is one of the most artistic levels I've ever played. 5 stars and a heart. | 2010-08-31 20:03:00 Author: JustinArt Posts: 1314 |
IceMaiden: this was beautiful. I loved it, and I thought you did a really fantastic job. It's gorgeous (I LOVED the final scene with the rolling hills) and I nearly started laughing out of joy when I saw the condensation of the elk's breath. Song levels are usually terribly boring, but I love how you told a story alongside the song (which was itself an amazing piece of work!). I was really, really impressed. No less than :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3 from me. And great job getting to the Cool Levels forum so quickly. | 2010-09-09 05:17:00 Author: Ryhas Posts: 179 |
Stunningly gorgeous, music, artwork, storytelling. Everything. Okay, for your next level you are hereby restricted to dark matter, basic sponge, and peach floaty. You may only use three stickers and must include at least one rocket cheetah. Just to make it fair. Everyone bows to the Winter Queen. | 2010-09-11 03:29:00 Author: thanatos989 Posts: 248 |
Song levels are usually terribly boring, but I love how you told a story alongside the song (which was itself an amazing piece of work!). Thank you Ryhas, glad you liked it. My son is the musician, I bribed him with multiple cups of tea! Okay, for your next level you are hereby restricted to dark matter, basic sponge, and peach floaty. You may only use three stickers and must include at least one rocket cheetah. Please tell me you don't mean three stickers for the whole level! I could make a level based on the old fable Henny Penny who has developed a penchant for cake. Sponge cake floating in a cloudy sky . I could get away without stickering the sponge, a white sticker for the clouds which I can keep copying and corner editing to get a bit of variation, that's the peach floaty taken care of, then make the dark matter invisible. Wait, I can make that level with one! Just need to figure out how to incorporate the rocket cheetah. Maybe Foxy Loxy's body double! Thank you thanatos, glad you enjoyed Nocturne. Thank you Ryhas, glad you liked it. My son is the musician, I bribed him with multiple cups of tea! No problem! I haven't played your other levels yet, but I definitely will. I took a leaf out of your book and have been using gradient to shade things. Materials look really cool when different shades are applied! I'm not quite as good as you yet, but thanks for being inspiration! Also, I remember reading in the spotlight about your son being the composer of the music. He did a great job! | 2010-09-12 00:33:00 Author: Ryhas Posts: 179 |
Great level, IceMaiden! I loved the way how you portrayed the story without the use of words, or at least much words, I can't remember. Anyways, I really enjoyed your level. I can't wait until you release your next song level! | 2010-09-18 22:47:00 Author: Phosphorus15 Posts: 463 |

left you a comment in-game, so you know i like it... thought the artwork and emotion was magnificent. can't wait to see how far you take a silent narrative and montage in LBP2. what really made this was just the subtle gestures and and almost stop-motion change from scene to scene, where just a minute difference showed hours of craftsmanship and artistry just to achieve the next allusion to motion and narrative. the volcano in the beginning alone puts alot of things to shame (wish i had done it like that in false idols 3) and my favorite shots were when she regains her touch of nurturing nature, and then is soaring up into the horizon with her companion looking on as a small silhouette. such great use of perspective and scale - it's like you mastered all the techniques of a real life 2d sketch and incorporated it into complex etching, with things like shadow and tone to create depth and a stilted 1st person horizon. i can also see the influence of a child in it too, the way it says alot in a short span and everything is just a given - all the events are understood because grasping the ideas of sadness, nature and spirit is instinctive. that element reminds me of this youtube vid i watched once called axe-cop... although that's just hysterical ridiculousness, the adult artist has his 4 year old brother write the story, and if you see it, you'll see what i mean. | 2010-09-20 01:21:00 Author: Unknown User |
