I heard they were doing that on Debug versions of PS3, which makes it pretty much useless.2010-08-20 18:44:00

Bet there's a firmware update out in the next week or so to counter this.2010-08-20 19:18:00

I wouldn't get too excited about this. The more security holes that are found, the further Sony has to limit the PS3.

This little stunt lost us the ability to install OS' on our systems.

I was talking with somebody about this earlier who seemed to be under the impression that this would give the user full access to the hardware, although this does not seem to be the case really... Either way, this is more of a problem than anything. I sympathize with Sony on this one. It seems like all that this hack does is enable users to pirate games, and while some will hide behind the veil that they're merely "using it to backup games that they legally acquired" it's highly unlikely that there will actually be many honest users. If the hack does enable people to easily run their own code on the system it's a little more understandable... The person I was talking to was thinking about getting a PS3 for that reason, but I think that's a very bad idea because Sony will probably roll out a firmware update to fix it right away. Plus, while the PS3 is rather cheap, you can buy a computer that will better serve such purposes for cheaper. A couple of years ago the idea of developing custom code on the PS3 was a lot more exciting of an idea, but right now it's not quite as interesting of an idea... The Cell hasn't really caught on much, and the PS3 is now a mostly underpowered system compared to a decent computer. So basically, I don't really care about any of the "homebrew" stuff for the PS3 anymore and ultimately all these hacks are going to end up doing is harming the majority of users. I saw this in the morning.Very awesome. I wouldn't use it for piracy If it becomes widely available) but for stuff such as custom games and such. I'm hoping it will become as easy to get as a pandora battery to hack a psp. Maybe I'll also put Linux on my PS3...2010-08-21 08:26:00

I was really annoyed with Sony for this. I had no plans to use linux on my PS3, but I think their solution to the issue was over the top (the words baby & bathwater spring to mind). But meh, that's what you get for buying into a closed system.

I was trying to decide last night if this came under the "no piracy" site rule, but seeing as jailbreaking itself is not illegal in the US (as of last month), I figure there isn't anything wrong with this thread.

Come on what are people really going to do with this, dump their own games on the console,
Pirate games, the fact is its crazy amounts of money just to pirate games properly, you either need to buy a bigger hard drive to get the Ps3 blu-rays which can go up to crazy amount of memory onto the HDD.

Or buy a Blu-ray burner for their PC just to get free games.

Lets say a pirate does the latter due to the HDD just filling up way too quickly, and the fact you would need an external HDD just to copy the files over.

So the Jailbreak itself ?100
Blu-Ray RW ?200
10X Single layered Blu-Ray disc?11
5X Dual layered Blu-Ray disc ?25 (for games like MGS, GOW, etc)

?336
For the ability to play 15 games, its more money for more games. Eventually you will break even but you lose;
PSN
Move games (unless hackers make a work around)
Sony support
and your never guaranteed that you will be able to play newer releases.

Yep its not worth it.

?The Backup manager game ID could be logged/recorded by Sony when logged into PSN (when online). This would obviously allow Sony to see who would be using the illegal PSjb/clone and we could very well see ban waves similar to the Xbox 360.?

Well, 'bout time. For a second there, I thought all those PS3 game backups I downloaded were gonna be totally useless.

But I gotta admit that it would be pretty convenient to start up a game without the disc. No more looking around for lost discs = win!
They have the same the thing for PC games and I absolutely love it. So much simpler to just launch into a game without having to look for the disc.

I'm gonna say that this will be patched pretty soon. Probably right when they send out the first shipment of the jailbreaker. Can you say "refund rush?"

Most likely if anything, Sony will be on this like a dog on a bone. Bans will be handed out on a silver platter just like Xbox did. Read more about it here: http://blogote.com/2010/gaming/sony-likely-to-ban-psjailbreak-ps3-users.html

They rly shud keep stuff like this under the radar.

O_o
I think the problem here aren't the disks, but rather you may have some issues with organising stuff there dude...

Just buy games. otherwise we get the same sh*t like what happend to the Nintendo DS, PS1 and PC.
I know the games are so expensive but more downloaded games = less new games.

Yeah, I know. Takes me forever to find games sometimes I swear they just walk away or something.

But still, its a great convenience!

Also, I think ozmodchips is better off ceasing operations until they can counter Sony's response to the device. Kinda a bad idea to take pre-orders when the chance of the product being bricked before shipment is so high.

If im reading this correctly, your saying it would cost about ?336 to make 15 games.
That would be somewhere around $250, at $60 a game that would be about $900 bought from a retailer.

Unless your saying this 'jailbreaker' things ONLY works for 15 games and takes away all those other things, then that makes sense.

It appears Sony are ahead of the Jailbreakers as the rumour is the next Firmware will detect the Jailbreak USB gizmo. Apparently the following email has been sent to people who have ordered the despicable device;

?Just a friendly update email and some advice for you over the coming days and weeks.

While PS Jailbreak team have told us it should be possible to support future firmware versions on the PS3, it is not guaranteed, they will need to access any newer firmwares than 3.41 and if needed release an update for the PS Jailbreak to support the newer firmwares.

So we wanted to give you all some advice that if a system update is released for the PS3 in the coming days or before you receive your PS Jailbreak which blocks system updates, we recommend that nobody update their PS3 for the time being.

If a PS3 system update newer than 3.41 is released you should keep an eye on the PS Jailbreak website for news on compatibility with the PS Jailbreak on the new firmwares. Only update your PS3 past 3.41 firmware if the PS Jailbreak team say that it's safe to do.?

If this true then it's fantastic news, the USB device will be rendered pretty much useless before people even receive it as Sony can instantly ban any PS3 with the device. Of course it won?t stop people using their PlayStation consoles offline but that will be a small minority.

Yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia was granted a temporary injunction by the nation's Federal Court to block the importation and sale of the new PS3 modchips.

The injunction means that until August 31, none of the modchip's Australian distributors will be able to import, sell or otherwise offload the devices. What's more, they have to take all the stock they already have and leave them with Sony's solicitors until the August 31 deadline passes.

Sony has from now until August 31 to convince the courts that the injunction becomes a more permanent arrangement (temporary injunctions are designed to maintain the "status quo" until a matter can be settled). If they succeed, it'll mean the end of legal sales of the device in Australia, but if they fail, then once September 1 rolls around the chips will be able to go on sale.

I think they put the source code up for the jailbreak meaning anyone can have the exploit now. So far, some people have been able to do some pretty cool stuff with it such as load it onto the ps3 via a calculator. I would hold off on buying it since its pretty much pointless to buy it now.

It's now considered open source btw. Sony will have a harder time keeping this under now since it is out in the public.
