PSP2 gains touch-sensitive controls?

Sony's unannounced handheld will reportedly feature a tactile pad on its reverse side to interact with games; dimensions similar to that of the PSP-3000.

Source: UK gaming news site Eurogamer.

What we heard: In March, Nintendo fired the first shot in the next-generation handheld wars, announcing its glasses-free depth-of-field gaming machine, the 3DS. The natural assumption has been that Sony will respond with a PSP successor of its own, one that does more than simply upgrade certain components of its current system, and rumors have for some time now swirled as to what the Japanese electronics giant will be bringing to the table.

The latest of these comes from UK gaming news site Eurogamer, which claims to have been given the scoop on a handful of new details regarding the unannounced system. Citing a trio of separate development sources, Eurogamer claims the PSP2 will be approximately the same size as the PSP-3000, which released in October 2008. Further, the PSP2 will reportedly have a touch-sensitive area on its back that can be used to control games.

The PSP's days are numbered?probably.

Additional details on how the PSP2's alleged touch pad would interface with games was not revealed. However, Eurogamer's sources note that Sony is demonstrating a variety of first-party games on the unit to various publishers and developers as part of Gamescom this week. These sources were also unclear on a release date for the system, with one noting that it could arrive by late 2011 and another saying the PSP2 is still a couple of years off.

Word of a touch-sensitive back is the latest hearsay to emerge about Sony's speculated device. In July 2009, reports indicated that the PSP2 would include a quad-core graphics processor that eclipsed that of the original Xbox. Other reports have said that the device will maintain the PSP's UMD standard, as opposed to going all-digital a la the PSP Go.

The official story: Sony had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Too early to say. With Sony not even acknowledging that the PSP2 is in development, firming up details on what the device may or may not contain is next to impossible. Further, the electronics giant has the option of tweaking, revising, and overhauling the device, making any supposed features in the hear and now potentially moot tomorrow.

All I want is dual analog sticks.

There's already a thread for this dude.

I did a forum search and found an old thread but this info seems new to me. It's on the front page of Gamespot.com

That would be awesome if this is true, but on the back? I'm not sure about that...2010-08-20 00:31:00

You know how LBP PSP came out a while after LBP on PS3? Well, if the PSP2 is as powerful as reported, perhaps we can expect to see LBP2 on the PSP2 as well.2010-08-20 00:38:00

I would like a touch screen, that would be pretty cool. Dual analog sticks would be better though.2010-08-20 01:05:00

sounds awesome! Though, I'd prefer physical buttons to a touch pad. Like low profile buttons on the back, similar to the style of buttons on a guitar hero controller. Though I am positive that Sony realizes EVERYONE wants dual analog nubs. Another thing, I really hope for full backwards compatability, I have plenty of exciting games that I do not want to forget about.2010-08-20 05:39:00

All I want is dual analog sticks.I have that today.

any PSOne Classic + PSP Go + Bluetooth controller = dual sticks on a PSP

I honestly have no idea how there continues to be zero hype over this. It's one of the best features ever.

I really hope for full backwards compatability, I have plenty of exciting games that I do not want to forget about.I can say with a high degree of confidence that Sony will probably not let us down there. Backwards compatability is a must-have, and they've done a great job on that ever since the PS2 came out. Nintendo, not so much.

Nintendo, not so much.

Actualy, the nintendo ds had backwards capabilities to the game boy and the Wii has backwards capabilities to the gamecube.

These days, nintendo is trying to put backwards capabilities into their systems. At least I thought until the nintendo dsi came out.

Anyway, back on-topic.

If they do add a touch screen and LBP PSP2 is made for this new device, I hope they use the touch screen for the same thing as PSMove for the PS3. Do you get what I mean.
If they add another analog stick, than we get the ability to move sackboys arms. Get it?
If they add a motion/gyro sensor, we get the ability to move sackboys head/body. Are you catching on?

The way I see it, LBP PSP2 for PSP2 would be a outstanding improvement to the current LBP PSP. (if the PSP2 has all these new features)

Well I'm just hoping they don't do it like the ps3. I am unfortunate enough to have just gotten a ps3, so I get no backwards compatibility2010-08-20 07:20:00

I guess that's why my PS3 Slim can play PS2 games.

I just don't understand why they would decide to put the touch screen interface stuff on the BACK of the system.2010-08-20 16:20:00

I was reading a little more about this last night and someone commented that it will probably be similar to the touch pad of a laptop. This actually doesn't sound that bad actually. Guess we all just need to keep watching for more news.

Sounds fake :/ If they do make one, I hope it has duo joysticks and touch screen on front, not back2010-08-20 18:36:00

Thanks for the great thread velcro! I could care less if it's touch screen. I agree with you. I want duo analog sticks if they go through with making the PSP2. And honestly, I could care less if they do or not. I love my PSP, sure they should make more great games for it, but the graphics are awesome, and I love it.2010-08-21 02:14:00

I hope they don't hop on the 3D train. I don't really care much for 3D. I just really hope that they focus on hardware.2010-08-21 04:51:00

Seriously, they killed 3D, when they invented these fancy glasses and what - not. I have to say, that Spy Kids 3D, was the BEST and will STAY the BEST 3D movie. I mean what happened to the good old red and blue glasses?

Maybe an upgrade on memory conservation would be good, and maybe a built in camera. The camera doesn't have to record videos, I'm fine with just good quality pictures.

I actually would have to disagree with you there.

The DSi and DSi XL already have cameras, and the quality is sorta suckish. I think instead of using up the space for a camera, they should boost battery and/or processing power/RAM to allow for better games.

Yeah, with the 3ds coming, this thing better have some awesome specs. I haven't read too much about the 3ds, but people are saying it is going to be stronger than a ps2 or the original xbox. That's crazy good for a handheld (don't know the actual specs, just regurgitating what I've seen from others). Though the ds actually lost my interest a while ago.2010-08-23 06:27:00

Ya, people are excited about the 3ds, but what good games are on the ds. Other than pokemon(yes I'm sort of into pokemon, but I'm not like my best friend, I'm not a person who plays pokemon all day. I just play it because it is a really long game and it keeps me buissy when I've got nothing else to do. Well, not since I got LBP ).

Anyway, I just came up with a completely random quote that is off topic.

When people say video games are dumb, that is because they never played Little Big Planet.

I've had a lot of ds systems, and then I got a psp! Haven't played my ds too much since (except for dementium 2 and kingdom hearts 358/2 days.2010-08-23 07:28:00

My DS was utterly forgotten the day I got my PSP. Touch screen was terribly annoying and badly implemented in most cases, and the online was woeful. Innovation isn't always progress, I think most people just want a scaled-down console experience from a handheld... not all this technical nonsence.2010-08-24 12:50:00

I loved my ds. Urg still can't get online to work though... The first time I played the PSP I kept switching it off by accident cos of the placing of the power button . Its not the consoles I care about it though, its LBP, so stuff motion and 3d However the 3ds is still the most interesting console at the moment. A new PSP might be awesome though 2010-08-25 15:19:00
