Star System wack?

Archive: 12 posts

Today I published my 3rd level called "A Journey Through..." My friend was the first to play and he rated 5 stars. It only showed up as 3. He continued to play if 5 more times and Rated it 5 stars and gave it good tags. The rating is still 3, but the good tags are there. I looked and noticed he only COMPLETED the level twice out of the six times. Does that affect the star rating? If not, what is happening?

Also, it appears he is the only one who has played, so no other ratings have occurred to change the rating.

Please help. I'm a little frustrated.

The rating system has been overhauled, just today in fact, so each level starts with 3 stars. This stops people from unfairly rating levels high or low when they're first published.2010-08-19 20:45:00

A player's most recent rating is the only one that makes a difference.

Tags are different though. All tags made by a person will register.

Before I posted this I did try to look for an answer, I don't think I was looking in the right place though, but thank you.2010-08-19 21:04:00

Well that's annoying. I'd say the majority of people who play a level just click right through the rating rather than actually thinking about what to give it. That's why it was always important to get all your friends to quickly rate a level five stars--once it's at three stars, it'll almost always stay there.

Agreed.
Would would be better if there was a star, with 1-5 on the points, and the cursor starts in the centre. So people would have to choose.

Even then, the lazy people would just click to the closest one (unless you meant the cursor started in the middle of a five point star or something). I actually liked the old system, but I would've suggested one tweak: ratings ought to be optional. Meaning, instead of the lazy people being forced to rate it (and just clicking through, thereby adding another 3 star to your average), they can just skip rating it all together. I think ratings would be more accurate then.2010-08-19 23:20:00

No offense, but that thread didn't really explain my situation. I was just wondering why the Rating was at 3 and not 5 or 4. Not the whole no star thing

It would make me feel bad asking my friends to do that. I'd feel like I was using them or something.

Personally, I could never be bothered with republishing a hundred times or organising something amongst my friends so a level would get a high rating. Nobody should need to do that, it's stupid and egotistical.

I suppose so, but I just thought of it as trying to overcome the general problems with the community pages. You publish a level and you'll always get at least a few people who come along and one-star it just 'cuz they're obnoxious. Once your average is low, it tends to stay there, 'cuz of all the lazy people who just click through without thinking about the rating. If you start with a high average, then all the lazy people won't be bringing it down by just clicking through and with any luck, there won't be enough obnoxious people to kill it. That way you get a more honest rating. I did that with my Starfighter level (in fact that's the only level I've ever had friends rate for me) and it ended up at three stars anyway... but it was an accurate three stars (I guess most people just weren't that impressed.... either that or they couldn't figure out the whole "walk behind the ship and jump when you see the light to get in".... cuz, y'know... that's so complicated). I didn't ask any friends to five star my latest mech and it ended up with three stars despite being considerably more advanced than my second or fourth mechs (or any other mechs out there actually) which got four stars each.2010-08-21 00:20:00
