1st place on your own level?
Archive: 16 posts
On my challenging levels I try and wait till there are alot of plays before setting a score. I kind of feel like I'm cheating though because I know all the INS and outs. There is a few of My levels that for the life of me I cannot get into the top three. So are you king of your own levels or do you let the community go at it? | 2010-08-19 17:00:00 Author: CENTURION24 ![]() Posts: 266 |
Never made any levels that had many plays so, i havent set the highscore for my levels. | 2010-08-19 17:04:00 Author: grayspence ![]() Posts: 1990 |
Depends... Not that I've done this with any of my levels, but I'd play the level and get first, but not a perfect score. Something beatable, but challenging to surpass. Then, once passed, I'd take the top spot again! ![]() | 2010-08-19 17:05:00 Author: piggabling ![]() Posts: 2979 |
I tend to be near the top of my levels, but not on my survival challenges. | 2010-08-19 17:06:00 Author: Jedi_1993 ![]() Posts: 1518 |
I purposely try to avoid getting too many points on my own levels. I know all of the boss patterns by heart, all of the secret point bubble caches, and I've generally playtested each part of the level enough that I can breeze through them with ease. That, to me, is the definition of an unfair advantage, so I counter it by not getting all of the points that I could. I don't feel a particular sense of accomplishment getting the top spot on my own levels anyway. It kind of feels like winning a competition for which you're one of the judges. ![]() | 2010-08-19 17:14:00 Author: Gilgamesh ![]() Posts: 2536 |
I guess I need to rethink the way I do things. I always figured it'd be embarrassing not to have the top score of your own level, but I've noticed that all the creators I respect the most never seem to be in the top five or so of their own levels. Anyway, whenever I find a hole in one of my levels, instead of closing it off, I make it a secret with a bunch of points. I get all those points and set my high score: if anybody else gets a score close to mine, I know they found the secret. Someone else actually found the infinite point glitch in my Starfighter level before I did... but I went back and got a higher score anyway ![]() | 2010-08-19 18:13:00 Author: Sehven ![]() Posts: 2188 |
Yeah, It's pretty much cheating, imo. And if the creator has the top score, I dont bother attempting to beat them, as for all I know, they could have a custom sticker switch with an infinite bubble spawn or something. When I playtest online, I avoid those extra bubbles off the main path, so I -don't- get a highscore. For the most part I playtest on my moon before publish/republish (for fixes only), that way I can try and break it without worrying about the score. I ran through my R&C level online (since it's hard to find on my moon lol), to see if I could ace it (did btw), and got the high score by accident, ha. Luckily someone had already beaten it the next day when I checked it. My C&H level has an exponential bubble combo at the end depending on how many hidden tuna cans you find. I made -sure- I didn't playtest that one online heh. | 2010-08-21 00:32:00 Author: midnight_heist ![]() Posts: 2513 |
I always try to get the highest score in order to show the player how much is possible for them to get. On the other hand, when people have beaten my score, I tend to get competitive about it & won't stand for second place. | 2010-08-21 01:54:00 Author: ApeCheese ![]() Posts: 369 |
I try to got a "top score" but not an "ultimate score/ unbeatable score." What I mean is, I will et a really high score, but break a combo or stop at the race-gate for a bit so to loose some points, leaving a small window to players to surpass that score, but not just handing it away, you know? | 2010-08-21 02:36:00 Author: Silverleon ![]() Posts: 6707 |
I never get the highscore on my levels, cause I die all the time ![]() | 2010-08-21 12:36:00 Author: Alec ![]() Posts: 3871 |
I think the best thing to have in certain levels such as races or survival challenges is to set a score as best you can playing it properly, if you have a great level it should be beaten, in many cases it will surprise you that people can score X amount more than you in those types of levels. But in the more traditional platform levels where there is X amounts of ways to chain etc you will know how to make a near perfect score, I would avoid doing this TBH. | 2010-08-21 13:00:00 Author: robotiod ![]() Posts: 2662 |

Altho you are somewhat pushed to get a high score on "Difficult levels" as not [placing a score there will lead people to say its trully impossible since even the creator hasn't finished it yet.... :/ | 2010-08-24 09:14:00 Author: Silverleon ![]() Posts: 6707 |
Yeah I have a Mirrors edge level and am not at the top but it doesn't really bother me ![]() | 2010-08-24 09:15:00 Author: AssassinatorRFC ![]() Posts: 715 |
In my first level, me and my brother put a secret area, just so that we could get the top score. We still have scores of 1 million, and nobody even comes close ![]() But now it doesn't really bother me. I'm not even sure I've played through my most recent level completely since I published it. | 2010-08-24 10:04:00 Author: Otune ![]() Posts: 131 |
Yeah I would normaly let the community score. And I am not the master of all my levels it seems. People did pull off some CRAZY scores in Crazy Train. Seriously. . | 2010-08-25 17:35:00 Author: RangerZero ![]() Posts: 3901 |
