Should I bother...?

Archive: 12 posts

... to make my next LBP music mixer level?

My last level "Magical Musical Workshop" - while not getting as many plays as I'd hoped, seemed to go down quite well with those people that did play it, with pretty much universal positive reviews.

I've already thought of a large number of ways I could improve upon my idea, that also requires an epic amount of logic to control the behaviour of the mixing board.

My concern is... with the lack lustre interest in my previous music level - and the iminent release of LBP2 just around the corner - I'm starting to question wether its worth my time and effort of programming something so massively complicated - when in a few months time it'll be outdated and superceded by all of the new tricks from LBP2 - especially after seeing the comprehensive music editor you get in LBP2...

So my question is - is it worth my effort?

It's a shame that LBP2 is already affecting LBP1 in this way

lol Mooney.

I think there will be plenty of people playing LBP1 levels after LBP2 comes out. In fact, I think that the demand for good LBP1 levels will be higher, what with many creators getting their heads wrapped around the new tool sets, and people who would rather wait for LBP2 to start filling the "used" shelves.

Of course you should keep on making LBP1 levels!

His question sounds more like, "Should I bother to make this crazy complicated level that may or may not be acclaimed as it should and will be moot in a matter of months, or should I make a simpler level just to keep my pop-it skills fresh for the second game where I will then make a crazy complicated level which shall remain relevant?"

or at least thats how I've been framing the same question in my mind for the past week or two. oh and I plan on checking your level out tomorrow, I'll be sure to pass along a good word to my friends if it's as good as it sounds. was that a pun?

Your right mobias.

I've basically made this complicated music mixer, I think it's a pretty funky & fun, original & unique level.... but it was quite difficult and tedious to build to get the timings right etc. It took alot of thought before even laying down the first block of material.

Well, I've now thought of ways to make it even more complicated, with more options for interacting with the music.... but it'll be about 4 to 8 times as complicated as my first music mixer level.

But I just know (from seeing the music editor in LBP2) - that it will appear incredibly simple and low tech compared with what we'll be able to do in LBP2;

I don't want to waste my last month or two playing LBP (my favourite game ever) working on an ultimately unrewarding level ,and alot of the things I'm trying to include have never been tried before - at least I've never seen anyone try them... so will take alot of incredibly tedious testing and tweaking to get right.

Of course when LBP2 comes out, I'm planning on building a MUCH better one - which is why I'm questioning the merits of making another one just now - when my free time is so limited

But in a way, that'd mean LBP2 is already ruining LBP1

Personally, I'm waiting to make any more levels.

I still do creating though. But I'm mainly just trying out ideas, etc. ready for LBP2.

If your old one was good though, you can always make a new one to fill some time

Well if matters any, I'm still making music levels regardless of what comes in LBP2 (That Music Editor is getting me too excited to be honest).

Think more along the lines of: Will this make ME happy? Will I get self-enjoyment out of it if I go ahead and create it?

I know traditional music levels (aka, mag keys + something moving past them) will become useless as well when LBP2 comes out. It hasn't stopped me from making levels because I can't help but smile when I successfully put a song together in that game. With the limitations that LBP1 has, it's just amazing to see custom music in the game. I say go for it if you truly want to and you'll satisfy yourself. You'll have plenty of time to satisfy others when LBP2 comes out. ^^

I say go for it!

I'm still, slowly, making a tower defence game for LBP. It's rediculously tedious as well as complicated to make and just like your idea I've never seen anything quite like it. Sure it's going to be completely outdated and basic when LBP2 comes out with it's holographic material, contolinator and movers but I'm still making it anyway. If I haven't finished it when LBP2 releases I'm still going to work on it because I personally want to finish it as a challenge.

But that's just me.

Well, I tried some of my new idea's for greater controls of the music creation;

Added Pan, Volume , Mute and Reset Controls - as well as a chord sequencer to run through a series of chords rather than just a single 4 beat bar.

Got it all working for a single sound object and only needed to copy this for each sound object in the game...

...& it was *that* complicated I could only copy it twice before the thermo maxed out.
It needs at the very least 8 sound objects to make a working mix!

Looks like my idea was too ambitious after-all & I'll probably have to wait for LBP2 anyway

....unless I can find a way to reduce the thermo by a factor of 8!!!
