Copy without changing the texture pattern (of eg. lava)
Archive: 12 posts
Have you ever meticulously cut a shape out of a material so that it neatly follows its texture, only to see the texture reset when you start copying it? Well, I was messing around with lava today, and I accidentally found a way around this. I have often run into this problem before, and I didn't know there was a workaround, so I thought I'd share it here: just put a sticker on it! http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/6751/umafoto35.png For example, let's say you made a basket out of Wooden Basket material (as shown above), and you want to drop copies all over your level, but you don't want your carefully centered basket texture to be messed up. Simply place a sticker on the shape, then copy it, and the texture should exactly match the original. You can remove the sticker afterwards, but if you don't mind the small thermo cost, there are levels with a clear see-through sticker as a prize, you wouldn't even need to take those off afterwards. Alternatively, glueing another shape onto it or adding things like sensors or magnetic keys also prevent texture shifts. So if you want to avoid the manual work, you can stick on a block of dissolve with an inverted magswitch during pause mode, and unpause to remove all the dissolve at once. Hope this helps someone. ![]() Edit: Added picture of a meticulously edited basket ![]() Oh, and disregard this post after LBP2 comes out, that has a UV editor for moving around the texture of a shape. | 2010-08-18 21:59:00 Author: Rogar ![]() Posts: 2284 |

Added a picture of a meticulously crafted basket, does that make it clearer? | 2010-08-18 22:22:00 Author: Rogar ![]() Posts: 2284 |
Oh I see. Yeah, the only time I copy paste "meticulously cut" materials is when they already have a sticker on them (like black sticker on ceramic tile, etc). I didn't even know it went all funny like without the sticker. Good tip though! I'm sure someone will find it useful. | 2010-08-18 22:41:00 Author: midnight_heist ![]() Posts: 2513 |
Nice tip! ![]() | 2010-08-18 22:44:00 Author: trip090 ![]() Posts: 1562 |
And thank you for letting me "borrow" the basket picture. ![]() @midnight_heist: Precisely stuff like tiles is where I ran into trouble in the past, but also when trying to make windows or doors out of lattice materials all look the same. I've been working with stickered lava materials for the past days, and I only realised the difference when I did some research in lava glow with fresh, unstickered lava in a clean level. | 2010-08-18 22:56:00 Author: Rogar ![]() Posts: 2284 |
And thank you for letting me "borrow" the basket picture. ![]() I'm fine with it but all the material pictures are by ViniciusBR11. I'm sure he wouldn't mind. ![]() | 2010-08-18 23:03:00 Author: trip090 ![]() Posts: 1562 |
Nice find. I'm pretty sure that if you have it glued to something else, that works too, but a sticker is easier. Thanks. | 2010-08-19 02:24:00 Author: Sehven ![]() Posts: 2188 |
Nice ![]() I could find it useful with circular POTC gold coins. | 2010-08-20 23:07:00 Author: Incinerator22 ![]() Posts: 3251 |
Good find! May I suggest finding a level that gives out a blank see-through sticker so you don't have to remove it afterwards? | 2010-08-20 23:20:00 Author: Jedi_1993 ![]() Posts: 1518 |
Personally, I'd always remove it, because it adds to thermo unnecessarily (albeit very little), but if you don't care about that it's a good idea. I also tested glueing a another shape like Sehven suggested, and indeed, that also works. In fact, so does a magnetic key, or a proximity sensor. I must have copied tons of heavy-textured shapes with keys or sensors on them, just wish I had noticed this before... ![]() | 2010-08-21 00:12:00 Author: Rogar ![]() Posts: 2284 |
...just put a sticker on it! Or you can capture it, or indeed anything which makes it unsmearable. | 2010-08-22 21:40:00 Author: Aya042 ![]() Posts: 2870 |
