Firestarter *SPOTLIGHTED*

FIRESTARTERLadylyn1
A futuristic virtual reality game show with a super fast pace. The founder, champion and record holder known as FIRE-START needs to be challenged; will anyone beat his score?

This is a race level with a difference: it has the option of a ghost replay of FIRE-START's record lap time... so you can effectively race him!

I hope you enjoy the level.

A bit of inspiration (focussing on the pace of the music, not the video itself):

EDIT: after playing it a few times when i restarted the level.. the level changed to unnamed level and the only thing on the level was a scoreboard and a disolve wall

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it... It took forever to get that timing right so im glad its paying off and people are getting close to beating him

Also if anyone could check for me... can you see any names on the scoreboard under the floor at the beginning? I cant see any, although I think it might be due to poor internet connection. :s

LOL, I ranked noob.
Not surprised at all. I don't even care how I did because this level is just. So. Cool.
I don't even know what I can possibly contribute, except to say that when I was leaping/running from the left to the right on that last conveyor belt going left, my Sacky was in slow motion. And it was beautiful.

The opening cinema is really awesome too. Incredibly timed, with a moving camera and great text explaining the premise.

I mean seriously, guys... What's the guy who created Invasion of the Sack Men From Space going to say to the genius who created this, that could possibly help anybody at all improve??

*sigh*

F4F me on Invasion of the Sackmen From Space?

:star::star::star::star::star: and a <3 from me, truly an exemplary performance in level crafting. Everything is smooth and works well, it's challenging, but not impossible, and a true delight to play.

Only problem I ran into was that after replaying numerous times, the very first obstacle shot me right under the reach of my little sackperson's arms, and I flew into the fire.

It was probably my fault though. (Dunno how I did it, it never happened again)

Wow, this level is addictive! The obstacles were different from what Ive seen in other race levels. Very fluid transitions and no lag from the any of the emmitted areas. Thats a big plus when it comes to a controller busting race like this. I got to the top 15 in 2 tries. very well made and unique race. 5 stars and a <3.

For the f4f could you play my level Kinetic Crisis. The link is in my signature .

PS: Is Fire-Start a new name or a friend?

Thanks for the feedback guys 
@Sabre: Well I feel the replay pretty much makes the level, so if you like the level without it the hopefully ur gonna love this extra feature! It really gets your palms sweating if you manage to keep up with him throughout the level and are close to beating him!

@L1GhTmArE: Yeah it IS addictive! I've spent hundreds of tries to beat FIRE-START time but he is the ultimate player so I don't know if anyone will manage to beat him
Oh and in regards to your question: I am not legally allowed to discuss this topic

Got "rookie" rank on first attempt. "Pro" on second.
Ah the ghost is emitted. Cool. Man he goes FAST. He gets a prefect run? :o

On your first try it is hard to react quickly when the bouncers are shooting you around everywhere as you are trying to follow sackboy on the screen. Like a fast pinball machine in some places.

My biggest critique is one part of the first drop down/grab/fire section.
It's the bit where you have to manually drop down (by using down + X). I feel this -really- breaks your momentum, and I found myself giving up on chasing the ghost because of it. At the first stage of the level, I feel it should be easier, only using the R1 to drop down.
I know it would be annoying to have to rebuild anything because of the scoreboard/ghost, so I'll understand if you don't change that first bit.
But if you could add a second ghost that is on a slightly easier level, I think that would be awesome. I assume firestarter/ghost has a perfect run, and I think most casual players would give up before beting him. But if you had an eaiser version, more people would find it more satisifying to beat.
I don't think the 1% who manage to beat him are more important to the 99% who only attempt it. (While the level is brilliant, I doubt anyone would play it "hundreds" of times like you did. Since you made it, I assume you are in fact fire_starter, and it is possible to beat him. You have also have a big advantage in playtesting as you built it.)
I'll give an example...on Crash Team Racing, the time trials have two ghosts, one medium-hard, and one -really- hard. I managed to beat the medium-hard ones on all tracks, which felt rewarding. But the harder ghost was freaking impossible on some tracks. Even with the best character I couldn't hold a candle to him. In the end, I just gave up. A similar story to the infamous "sideswipe/fracture" challenge on ModNation, which for the record, they patched because it was -too- difficult.
I am very curious about how many people will beat fire_starter, I may be wrong in my 1% prediction.
The ultimate goal in this level is to beat him, which I will liken to "acing" LBP's Bunker level. You cannot award the players any trophies or costume items, so the reward is far lessened, as is the player's motivation. IMO, the difficulty of beating fire_starter should be less than or equal to completing the bunker, rather than acing it.

Other niggles:
- The checkpoint after the 2 big rotating sponges should be sensor activated. In fact if the majorty of checkpoints are, so should the rest of them. Consistency is key. Plus it was annoying how the checkpoint was cut into the thick layer, and was far too low for my liking. I would like it if after you spawned there you could simply run to the right and grab at the peak of your jump. atm you have to come foward a layer then jump while standing still just to reach the sponge, which unnecessarily slows down the player.
- Not sure about the slow/reverse conveyor belt at the end. I liked it at the -very- end of the race, but not in the screen/panel before. Maybe just a little too long/repetitive for my liking.
- I had trouble with the early bit with the slide + bounce and grab. I would be pushed into the flaming bit on the right between the middle and the ceiling. So basically I would get killed when it was beyond my control. (cheap death)
- Also got confused by the "start" text in the middle of the race. What the?
- Shame it's only one player. Half the fun of a race is trying to beat your friends.

The starting scoreboard is as follows:
#1: FIRE_START @ 24,420
#2: Ladylyn1 @ 24,043
Then the rest..
I see what you did there.

Still a great level, 5 stars and a heart from me.
But it could go from great to awesome if you tweaked a few parts.

Oh and why don't you key link to your "stairway to heaven" level? The difficulty?
It's my fav one from you. Plus why did you delete/republish your Cirque level?

Wow thanks for the fantastic feedback! Ok there's alot of info there so i'll pick and choose areas.

Firstly, as u can imagine the emitting takes up half the thermo so having another slower racer will be virtually impossible. Besides, I was joking before about not being able to beat him... on my moon i have done by a good 6 seconds once so it should be more than possible from a really decent player of course its much easier for me as ive had more practice (i know some tricks )

The jump down at the begining can be done VERY quickly, in fact when I started making the level I was so concerned about making it as fast paced as possible that anything which slowed the player down was instantly removed.

The checkpoint after the two rollers IS sensor activated.

With the slow ending... you would understand more if you had kept up with FIRE-START. Basically, i would say a reasonably large number of players would be able to keep up with him up to that point (he really isn't all that fast) but he doesnt mess up. Also he grinds his way to victory at the end (hence the flames on the feet) so that makes it into quite a tense moment as he slowly gains on you (provided you're in front!). Overall I was actually thinking of making him faster but perhaps i'll leave it as it is for now.

Im a bit concerned about the bit at the start... wat happened exactly with the cheap death?

As for keys, all the levels its got keys to have been recently published. I fancied another go at the cool pages with the circus... itll only replace another bomb survival anyway

Oh and who said there wasn't a prize for beating him?

Thanks again!

That was a radical level. The obstacles are insane and the level details are intriguing. The introduction scene is cool too. It's a major shame that my rank is "noob". Overall this level is extremely good. 5 :star:s and a <3

I got a sneak peak at this gem a while ago and I found it to be one of the most (if not the most) original race levels i've experienced. Good, clean platforming make this level good but what makes it really unique is the "shadow/ghost race" option. With this turned on, firestarter races you around the course, and you'll have to have the course down to perfection to beat the champion. At the end you'll also get ranked...expect noob if its your first go....cause this one is challenging....

Overall, 5/5 for a very unique race level!

Ha thanks man,

yeah u pretty much summed it up in one paragraph. i've seen a couple of people get a decent rank on their first attempt but yeah most are classed noobs

Also I might add that FIRE-START does have his own level up too, which is inspired by ur own
so give it a go and see wat u think!

Updates:
Ok I was getting a few complaints about the cutscene speech bubbles at the beginning so I've changed 2 of them to no cutscene to speed it all up a bit for those really dedicated players

wooooooooooooooooooooo amazin as always! there arent enough of these kind of levels, it was so much fun, i really loved the start how fast paced u start off, and by the end when u get to the finish line running against the belt feels exhausted like ur not gonna make it haha.
love the colour scheme.
original and innovative obstacles (something i struggle to keep coming up with).
great ghost replay idea and well made.
not alot else to say really, ur so good.

Haha!
Tried this vecause a friend asked me to, and I loved it!

Got Pro and Veteran on my 1st 2 tries, was #15 on the scoreboard on the 2nd try, so you better watch out FIRE-START, soon the new #! shall be Quick'silver-Leon/ Yaru'Dark-Dash!

Awesome level lyn, can't really give more feedback than what's already been said. (too focused on beating FIRE-START to notice flaws. )

I wonder who it was that got you to play this level, Yaru Anyways!

The Good:
----------------
+Fast-paced, edge of your seat, racing! I wish I were kidding, but this is what I thought of when I was playing. I caught myself after wards on the edge of my bed, in complete concentration. XD It was kinda embarrassing.
+ The story was good, short, and really gave a reason for the racing.
+ The ghost option was very nice. I didn't try it, but it was a very good idea! Kinda like Mario Kart.

The Bad:
-------------
Well....there is none xD I couldn't find any problems here at all!

I'm still a big fan of your levels (In particularly Cirque de la Nuit) and this level met my expectations and more! I was compelled to beat my score (Which I got Pro on my first try!) which is saying a lot, since I never find any reason to go back and play again.

I gave you :star::star::star::star::star::star: and a well deserved <3

Oh um, did you get your storyline idea from a book called The Hunger Games? It seems very similar...

And if you can, please check out my level! I know you're probably busy, but it'd be great if you could check it out! I'd love for the legendary ladylyn to play it The Burning Forest (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=33408-The-Burning-Forest)

Holy crap. That was awesome!!! Probably the best use of sackboy grab Ive seen for sure!

One thing that could be polished up is where you're on the moving platforms/conveyor belts and the fire balls are shooting down, Id personally make them so they disappear righ before or as they hit the ground, that way they arent just hanging around on the platform for a bit.

I honestly cannot think of anything else! I loved the intro, very clever, felt like that moving comic book style. Loved being pushed around on the glass! It was well done that you could have such complex areas to navigate on different layers but I always knew where I was meant to be going. The ghost is awesome, even if I could only keep up for a second

Thanks guys its nice to know people like what they’re playing 
However I urge people to try the ghost replay! If you’re reasonably decent then there will be no problem keeping up with him for a bit.
Also surprised to see that no one has beaten him yet! Come on guys he’s not that hard

Some very valid defence from my attacks.
Perhaps he isn't as hard to beat as I predicted.

The checkpoint after the two rollers IS sensor activated.
Ah ok, great! Maybe activate it a little sooner? Maybe I should replay it again for some playtesting.
Any chance you will bring that checkpoint foward a layer? Pretty please?

Is it ok to upload a pic with an stickered arrow in your level? Or I could post it here (might take longer since im lazy )

Ah dont worry about it, I know you weren't being rude. I like constructive criticism and smilies lol

Anyway, I did increase the radius of that sensor switch a little although obviously I dont want it too early otherwise people may just fly off the second roller and not grab the ceiling- yet still activate the checkpoint.

lol ok ill move it forward when I get home from work
I've had quite a few people say the same thing as u so I think it's an issue which needs addressing.

Yeah sure upload a picture on the level!

Thanks again.

hey LL! This is certainly a great level. After many, many tries.. I think I'm getting the hang of it. As of this morning I had 4th place, but if I could just get through it without something stupid happening I think I have a decent shot at the title. Also, easy for you to say that he's not that hard to beat. You created the level lol Anyway, sorry for the short feedback, but there's really not much to say other than it's a solid level with very high replayability.

Just played again, some nice fixes.
I uploaded that pic, here's what happens:
You fall down onto the glass triangle, jump over the 2 holes, get pushed up, get pushed left, and if you are grabbing already (as you should as it says "R1") you grab onto the very right edge of the sponge, the sponge goes up a little, your momentum swings sackboy to the left, then it swings him back to the right, hitting the piece fire material. (highlighted in my pic).
One way to avoid this is holding left, but when being pushed around like a pinball, players dont tend to move about, as it's likely to break something. (Blame all those "level that plays by itself" levels, that instruct you to do nothing)

On replays it would be helpful if you could just grab the ghost sponge as you are running right, and not have to jump up/grab/jump down every time you replay.

Another point:
On the part (after layered conveyor) where you grab the sponges as you are going down, it is very possible to simply swing from sponge to sponge avoiding the blue platforms on the side.
I think this is great, because it's a "risk for reward" gameplay wether it was intentional or not.
The problem is the checkpoint doesn't activate if you swing from the last circle onto the huge circle in the next section.
I would -highly- encourage to to keep it as is, just increase the radius of the checkpoint sensor.

Another point lol: The "start" sign would be better if it hinted that the conveyor belts were coming. Perhaps a stylised image with the platform colours?

Man, I was going well on the first run since the republish, up until that layered conveyor section. (got 3rd in the end I think)
There is a lot going on plus there plus there is a lot of player choice, perhaps too much. For example running/jumping foward to the next platform in the conveyor to save time, while trying to dodge the fire, with direction changes, while moving on a conveyor, etc.
I feel it is the hardest part in the whole level. Hard to get right imo. And if you die, fire_start is already up on the higher back conveyor moving onto the next section! x_X
Perhaps you could make a version where fire_start starts each section at the same time you reach it. Not likely I know, but something to think about in the future.

Oh, another point after many replays, it has 2 loading screens at the start, the disolve/digital "loading" and the race gate wait.
Why not have the player drop down to the race gates, and have the "loading" pop up as the race counts down?

Also, that last jump down part on the pinball section is really annoying. I find my sackboy keeps jumping up, even though I'm holding down. Perhaps make the gap in the thin layer fence a little wider?

Plus you rasied that checkpoint + layer! Plays much better.
As you can tell by my long and repeated feedback, I really like this level.
EDIT: Darn conveyors got me again!! And that darn glass slide into fire on the pinball section too!

EDIT EDIT: Got second with 22,256.
I think to beat fire_start, you just need a bit of practice, as learning what obstacles are coming really helps.
EDIT EDIT EDIT: Got 23,203. Had a near flawless run. That's about all the time I have to burn atm (making a level atm), so I just uploaded a photo of my "hero" rank, and I'll leave it there. For now.

Thanks again for your superb feedback.

I now know the cheap death which u are on about and yeah i was looking at that before but had decided to keep it as a skill which a player could master. If I was gonna change this then I would have a sloped roof on the glass straight coming up to that so it forces the player to jump again to grab the material. Still one to think about...

As for fire-start starting at the same time as u for every stage that would be good, but as a separate level perhaps based around training.

With the exception of putting the loading screen at the start gate (impossible cos ive used the front thin layer) all of your other ideas are now in the game and ready to play! The start is now super quick with ur grab only option and I even sped up the loading screen by 1 second.

Thanks again for ur feedback, anything else u want to mention feel free to do so... cos all of the above worked exceptionally well.

Glad u are enjoying the level.

Hey there!

I played this a couple of days ago, and it has quite a few different playing mechanisms that I have not seen yet in race levels - such as the conveyor belt on the roof - and I enjoyed that thoroughly. You like your conveyor belts and I liked the way that you sometimes used them against the player - by making it go in the opposite direction. You seem to have done a good job decorating the level, and have come up with quite a nice theme.

It's quite a face paced level, and you used the whole R1 thing well. It's not repetative. To be honest, I'm not sure what to say really! I found it to be a good level, and I keep coming back to see if I have improved my score - it's quite addictive really. The first time I was ranked as a Noob - I've now worked myself up to be a Pro. So I'm getting better - it's only time before I'm a firestarter! Still can't keep up with him though, but I'm sure it's possible. Having him work next to you is nerve racking in itself, and can easily make you slip up.

Great level! 5 starred and hearted!

Well, I did it!! I actually beat FIRE-START. I think I may have spent a little too much time on this, but I've never been so frustrated and had so much fun at the same time lol Nicely done LL .. now go back to making amazing visuals and clever puzzles so I don't have to spend hours playing them over and over

btw - I do realize that you (LL) could go in and beat my score in a few tries, but I'm satisfied that I could keep right on your heels

That was brilliant! I really loved the concept! Racing against FIRE_START and not just the clock really makes it more intense. Your use of grabbing to layer shift was brilliant and your obstacles were fantastic. I loved the intro - it was so masterfully done!

All in all, 5 stars from me and a big heart.

Could you F4F my Calamity of Colourful Cubes level? There's a link in my sig.

Now I'm gonna see if I can beat FIRE_START.

So a big congratulations goes to Powershifter!

The first and only so far to beat the infamous FIRE-START!

Consequently the intro story has been changed ever so slightly.

Hm looks like Tactical Gunner has experienced a very unusual glitch with this level...

The grab conveyor belt didnt seem to be there at all for him and each play through he was forced to return to pod. So I took him to create mode and let him have a look... he couldn't see any of the grab belt, I could see all of it.

I set the emitter to 'max emitted at once' = 5 and i could see the first 5 (like ud expect) whereas he could only see blocks after where we were meant to see them!

So if u r having problems completing the level its due to this bug, unfortunately there's nothing I can do about it except hope that its a problem MM's end.

Sorry if you're affected.

This is the same problem me and Sabre_ ran into in our co-create level Deep Jungle. Things (mostly near the end) disappears off screen but are still there physically. It happens in create mode too someimes, which is wierd. I think its a rare problem though.

I finally got a chance to properly play this level last night. When I say proper I mean many times. This is a level that must be played multiple times to fully enjoy it. If someone only plays it once then it is a shame because the challenge is lost. I love levels like this. You play again and again, getting better and better with each play, trying to get your name on the leaderboard. The art design was great and the obstacles and challenge were perfect. I have very little constructive feedback because there is very little this level needs. Here are a few things to consider though. First, there is a checkpoint on a small platform just barely above some moving platforms that go from right to left. If you don't hop up you will be knocked off, if you do jump but its kind of late you will jump straight up and still not go onto the platform with the checkpoint. Its pretty minor but I bring it up because it really confused me the first time I played, I kept riding the platform left towards the checkpoint but couldn't seem to find my way onto it. I thought I was just going the wrong way. I did eventually figure it out but it's something to consider for the ADD players that like to quit out at the first sign of anything that's confusing. Secondly, I think it might be cool...(if you're "behind the scenes" level stuff allows)...to cut some holes where the player rides a platform behind a wall. It seems like a missed opportunity to let the player know they are on the right path and maybe a chance to give a quick camera zoom on the player while they're not doing anything. Overall, I really really liked the level. I placed 11th last night but that's not good enough so I'll be back for more today. The intro was awesome and the ghost lap addition was great. It's certainly a 5 star level and is now sitting on my hearted list. Thanks and awesome job. 2010-08-21 19:32:00

Saw you fixed that cheap death bit. Thanks.
But shoot this is still hard x_X
I aced it, only slowing down twice, and still didn't beat him. =(
At least someone beat him, so it's good it is at least achievable.

Ha thanks, yeah its challenging but I can see you in the top 10 so you're doing quite well.

Also we currently have 2 players with Firestarter rank. I have updated the level to include a 'rare' Firestarter trophy for any who claim the supreme rank.

More news: The level was SPOTLIGHTED!

Awesome level. I played it yesterday. I have to say that it is little bit difficult, but is fair anyway. The intro is awesome, the gameplay original and very fast. In general a very very fun level. :star::star::star::star::star: from me.

Really I don't know what to say to criticize your level, the visual aspect is nice too (anyway you have few time to enjoy it xD)

If you want, you could give me some feedback in my levels, but you don't have to, more taking into account the lame feedback I'm giving you this time

Jesus Fire_Start is fast. I got "Pro" on my 1st and 2nd tries, but I'm gonna go play it a few more times today
Got 205 on the leaderboard, though

Superb Level.
Alot of fun.

Reminded me in a way of Running Man - not the Arnie Movie, but the short story by Stephen King that the film was based on.

It's also very competative for a 1 player level, and encourages you to try it again to beat your previous score (thanks to the ingenius rating system).

All in all, certainly one of the better "Race" levels - and the gameshow style presentation makes it very compelling, managing to add an element of story line to what is essentially a "fast as you can" race level.

Great Gameplay & Great Presentation;

Update:

FIRE-START was sitting in 5th place and I didn't want him dropping off the scoreboard at the beginning of the level... so I actually have made the ghost replay slightly faster and posted a better score. FIRE-START is now sitting in 3rd place, so it is still possible to beat him although its slightly harder

Also I got a message from the guy in 1st place... apparently he spent 5 hours on the level getting that score! Some people are way too dedicated

Congrats on the spotlight, well deserved!

I had spent 45 minutes trying to perfect my score, and I still turned out in the 600s. Man, people are crazy. Or I'm just a noob...

Played this the other day - I got a "Noob" rating! Haha.

I am a horrible player - so not surprised. But I still had fun.

A nicely made, frantic platformer.

This was a lot of fun! Me and my friend CrazeAlec played this together and we had a blast, we ended up with veteran on our first try. I really liked the visuals by the way, simple but clean and vibrant. Great level, I rated it :star::star::star::star::star:.2010-09-03 22:08:00

Sorry for bumping but I was a bit late to play this one.

This was the best race I've ever played: brilliant obstacles, challenging but never ever unfair, great ranking system and time that's ticking away without mercy! I love the style that you've created here - very clean and not overloaded, you can focus on the gameplay instead of starring at the enviroment, cause you ain't got time for that (... if you want to get a real good score ^^). The level is highly addictive and has an awesome high replay-factor! For me, this is a well deserved spotlight! Congrats to this great level!

Wow, that was one of those truly original ideas on LBP, which are rare these days. The ghost replay is seemingly unbreakable, which just shows that a lot of time went into it. :star::star::star::star::star: <3
Good job, I was really impressed by it.
