As some of you may have gathered from some of my posts, I'm a proud father of a five year old son. We've been getting him ready for months. Buying supplies, telling him stories about our own school days, and worrying over how he'll fit in. Today's his first dayl, so I took the day off work to see him off and now we're just waiting around the house to see how it went. I'm all kinds of emotions rolled into one big ball of love, pride, and confusion, so I'm letting my brain rest from it with (what else?) some LBP. So I was wondering, who else out there has kids heading out for the first time, or going back? | 2010-08-16 17:46:00 Author: SpeedyMcKnuckles Posts: 331 |
Im a kid and i go back next tuesday to the 8th grade D: Dont worry he will be fine, im sure he will love school and then once he gets to 4th grade he will slowly start to hate it | 2010-08-16 17:51:00 Author: Snrm Posts: 6419 |
LOL... That was pretty much my experience. edit: btw, snrm, I haven't forgotten about your Life of Toys levels. I'm slowly getting back around to them. Haven't had as much time on the game as I'd like. | 2010-08-16 18:37:00 Author: SpeedyMcKnuckles Posts: 331 |
So is it Kindergarden or Pre-School? | 2010-08-16 18:38:00 Author: Snrm Posts: 6419 |
Kindergarten. He's pretty stoked. Settled right in and started drawing a little stick man sitting down on a bus, cause he knows that starts tomorrow. | 2010-08-16 18:41:00 Author: SpeedyMcKnuckles Posts: 331 |
Hmm does your kindergarden use a shorter bus or a standerd bus? And is he AM or PM kindergarden? Im guessing AM | 2010-08-16 18:51:00 Author: Snrm Posts: 6419 |
Yeah. AM. It's a standard bus. We're going to get him in an hour. | 2010-08-16 19:01:00 Author: SpeedyMcKnuckles Posts: 331 |

Could someone explain the 'grades' that you americans have, I've never understood them. I'm sure your son will love school, for a while at least. | 2010-08-16 19:46:00 Author: resistance1 Posts: 812 |

He's home now, and he says it was good. He likes his teacher and his classmates and he got a sticker and a nice comment. I'm so proud of him! It's not that confusing Resistance1. Each year the child attends the next grade up from the previous year, as long as the child did well enough to proceed. If not, the child gets "held back" a year, and has to repeat the grade. In theory, this makes sure that they all learn enough to progress successfully in life. How do they do it in your neck of the woods? | 2010-08-16 20:51:00 Author: SpeedyMcKnuckles Posts: 331 |

this makes me feel old.. Hey, I'm the 35 year old with a kid who started this thread about sending the little ones off to school. No one's allowed to feel old but me. | 2010-08-17 01:19:00 Author: SpeedyMcKnuckles Posts: 331 |
I haven't been in school for a loooong time, and haven't met the right lady to bring up any kidsies of my own to take there yet. :o Good luck to everyone that's going back or has kids going in. | 2010-08-17 01:22:00 Author: Foofles Posts: 2278 |
Help, I am back to school in one day (from when I am writing this)!!! Normally we have two headteachers of the class, though the last one quit this year, so we were left with one (who is my favourite teacher). Then I got to know she was pregnant with her husband and so we would not have her this year. Twins they said! I am happy for her, but now I lost the best teacher on the school. So two new teachers this year. Hurrah. Though I have not gotten confirmation on the pregnancy thing though. It might have been my friend joking. I will see tomorrow... | 2010-08-17 17:07:00 Author: moonwire Posts: 1627 |
I hate school (or college, whatever.) Safe in the knowledge that on Thursday i get to find out how badly i ****ed up my AS levels, it's time to finish preparing my backup plan for failure. Which is that when i fail next year as well and therefore don't get into a good Uni, i'll take a gap year during which time i'll go tour with my band, before joining the army and getting myself shot. All's well that ends well. | 2010-08-17 17:19:00 Author: Unknown User |

I dunno, the numbers go up higher than I can count! :S Up in scotland we do: Nursery (optional) P1 P2 P3 P4 P5 P6 P7 S1 S2 S2 S3 S4 S5 (Optional) S6 (Optional) Then Uni, if you want. P stands for Primary and S stands for secondary. I'm in S4 atm and coming up to my exams. :S I'm glad to hear your son went well in his first day of school. | 2010-08-17 19:08:00 Author: resistance1 Posts: 812 |
Where I come from, it goes: Playgroup (which is optional) Junior infants Senior infants First class Second class Third etc.. etc.. to sixth class. Then its secondary school. Which goes from first, second, third year. Then we get a year off to have job expierience, which is transistion year. Im starting it in 2 weeks. Then its fifth to sixth year I remember my first day at playschool. My mom was late picking me up! (:O) So I got to stay with the owners son and play playstation. Hope your kid had a nice time! | 2010-08-17 23:15:00 Author: AgentBanana Posts: 511 |
Eh, I'm goin back to school Monday. I'm dead, as I will be a freshman in highschool. Kinda nerve wracking | 2010-08-18 00:35:00 Author: eagerneph Posts: 1536 |
Well, this morning I dropped off enrollment papers for 3 year old Kindergarten for my youngest daughter. Here in Australia, Kindergarten (or Pre-School) is for 3 and 4 year olds and then you start school at the age of five - and that's called Prep. I believe most other countries call the first year of school Kindergarten.. anyway, this is the same Pre-School that my older girls went to and they're now 15 and 13. The staff are very excited to have us back again, which is nice (and a relief!). It's exciting to see your children progressing to the next level of their development, but I'm also a little hesitant this time round as I know what comes with it - the bad language and behaviour of other children being acted out for you (and upon you) in the comfort of your own home Plus, you begin to enter the world of aching for your children as they experience unkindness, rudeness, aggressive kids who bully others and the world of comparison to others. Alas, it's where many life lessons are learned, not to mention the important quality of resilience. However, the stress doesn't always kick in until a couple of years in, so hopefully - for your son and for you - he'll have a lovely easy transition and his first day was a ball! | 2010-08-18 00:54:00 Author: BabyDoll1970 Posts: 1567 |

BabyDoll, you took the words right out of my mouth. I was talking to a co-worker today, and while I didn't say it so eloquently, I could feel my heart and eyes sink when I realized that all this nervousness hasn't been about the supplies, or wondering whether he'll do well, or if he'll like his teacher, or any of the million things that niggle you during this process. No. It was exactly what you said. It's the realization that the day is coming when I will have to hold him while he sobs, not because he didn't get the toy he wanted, or because he was punished for being bad, or any other good reason for a five year old to cry... but because he'll have experienced cruelty. So far though, everything still seems to be rainbows, kitty cats, ice cream and superheroes.I take great comfort in that. All we can do is enjoy it through his eyes while it lasts. Hope your kids have a great year as well. Thanks for the comment! | 2010-08-18 02:24:00 Author: SpeedyMcKnuckles Posts: 331 |
I'm only in eighth grade, I'm not entitled to "hate" or "love" school, as there is no good reason to do either. | 2010-08-18 04:58:00 Author: Arkei Posts: 1432 |
@ Resistance1: Ooo I am curious as well! How does it work over there? Last week I stepped into my senior year of high school... sigh.. school has passed by so quick. | 2010-08-18 05:35:00 Author: ShamgarBlade Posts: 1010 |
I starting the 8th grade/S2 September 1st. I actually like to know what other people think of school. Like me I think it's fun when your teachers and school mate are cool. If not it's boring. | 2010-08-18 06:27:00 Author: phil_003 Posts: 609 |
