OK Murder Mystery on the Mississippi Express

OK Murder Mystery on the Mississippi Expressclesus This level is a murder mystery. The basic plot is you are a member of the Fancy Pants Detective Agency and on your way to the office you, like all good detectives in history happen to be somewhere a murder happens. The mystery is random scripted, meaning you have a chance of 6 possible murders that could occur, and each murder has a unique dialog. You basically go talk to allinvolved and figure out who done it. The original concept invovled all six people ramdomly killing any of the rest of the crew, but that would result in 6^3 text entries and emiter points...so it was scaled back. Attached pics of the steamboat the murder occured on, and some other level pics. Some other interactives exost on the boat, but main focus is the mystery. This actually looks pretty impressive - especially the whole thing about 6 different possible scenarios. Looks good from the pictures too! I'll check it out later - good luck with it! | 2010-08-16 02:59:00 Author: standby250 Posts: 1113 |
Looks great. I will give this one a try when I get home from work. I like the look of the steam paddler. | 2010-08-16 06:56:00 Author: Joburg87 Posts: 56 |

Looks awesome man!!! I'll try it out later when im not busy hehehe Thanks for the replies. Tried polishing the level a bit today and got carried away. I would work a good while finish play it, find something to fix, go back to edit discover more things, and repeat that whole process. The last stint of editing I did not publish for several hours, now just finished and LBP is just giving me level publishing errors. Oh well, changed to timeing in the game, fixed a glitch where if you somehow got killed before the ship left you could get stuck, added environmentals, added detail to other ending, touched up ship, touched up ports, and several other things. Level is faily maxed out, so please report any issues, but it should run perfect once I can get teh final update to load. The pic belows show a little of the added effects. | 2010-08-16 11:40:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
Touched up on some in line story, and put a little work into the cash design for the level. Had a few replies, yet no feed back at all on this level. | 2010-08-25 19:22:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
OK, dude... I have to check this one out... edit: Man, I liked this level! I guessed wrong twice on two different stories, so I'll have to play again. Here's why: The steamboat is awesome. It's well designed and easy to get around on with lots of little details to look at. Very clean looking. Your characters are a lot of fun! I like the way they're designed, and the way they talk. Great dialect! The six different stories... I actually kinda want to see them all. And get them all right. That's a lot of replay. There was one thing that bugged me, and that's that the choice boxes in front of the captain (I love the captain!) are a little small and it's hard to see who's who. I only recognized a few of them on my TV. The other thing is during the storyline with the dog as the victim, the rich old married man was nowhere to be found during the storm sequence... Either that or hidden really well. The whole thing is great, besides that, and I really had a blast checking it out. I may well give it another play later! :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3! | 2010-08-25 19:36:00 Author: SpeedyMcKnuckles Posts: 331 |
This sounds really cool, but looking at the screenshots it needs global lighting. A darker level would be more mysterious. I'll play it if I can, my internet connection's so no promises. http://i.neoseeker.com/mgv/272671-Blackfalcon/671/5/animal0064hb2_display.gif | 2010-08-25 20:42:00 Author: Blackfalcon Posts: 409 |
Hit me back once you play it, the global lighting starts day...but once the murder happens the cliche' kicks in big time with rain, lightning, waves, and darkness. If the lighting is too bright still at night it would be good to know, I can fix that...just worried about making it too dark. | 2010-08-26 01:49:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
My internet worked long enough to play this level, you should consider yourself lucky! ;D Right, so I played this level 3 times and got 3 different scenarios. I love the idea of different murders, it gives the level great replay value. I got the first one wrong and the other two right. They were all very difficult, but very well thought out and very interesting to explore. I didn't like the fact that one character was missing every time. The dialogue was some of the best I've come across in LBP and the characters were all unique (I liked the accents)- well done! I'd love to play the other scenarios out and get the first one right! The design was nice and simple, nothing amazing but it all looked good and alleviated the tension of the level. I particularly liked the bridge and the boat itself; great design and easy to navigate. The characters were cute and funny. Having played the level I think the level should be a bit darker after the murder- just a little bit. It was a simple palate, but I feel it worked. This level was well made, a lot of work must have gone into it! Not much gameplay but some great story-telling and puzzle-solving. Loads of fun, I'll definitely go back to it and give it some stars and hearts! http://i.neoseeker.com/mgv/272671-Blackfalcon/671/5/animal0064hb2_display.gif | 2010-08-26 18:41:00 Author: Blackfalcon Posts: 409 |
Thank you both for your feedback. I will fix the lighting to make it a bit darker. I didn't think about the screen size for the quess box at the end, I will tune that up too. Missing people, I will fix that, when was editing the ship I could have added a corner or two that blocked an emitter... that one I will look into big time...oops. Really good to know. | 2010-08-26 19:00:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
They're just small details really. =) By the way, the scenarios I played were: Rich Man's Wife dies (Cat was missing) Dog dies (Rich Man was missing) Rich Man dies (Sheriff was missing) And the pictures of the suspects are a bit small. http://i.neoseeker.com/mgv/272671-Blackfalcon/671/5/animal0064hb2_display.gif | 2010-08-26 19:53:00 Author: Blackfalcon Posts: 409 |
It was good to know which ones. I will check those three out to find out where they are. I check several emitters today, but they seemed to be working...but there are 36 plus emitters on the boat alone. I made the pics at the end bigger, darkened it up more, added a badge so if you have talked with the people before you can skip ahead (but you have to earn it with one passed mission)...then I added a few little easter eggs and effects. New logo for the firm... http://i34.tinypic.com/2nvgpjp.jpg | 2010-08-27 13:23:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
Sup celsus, I played your level and here's what I thought. Visuals - 4/5 game-play-4/5 Level design/ layout-5/5 Let me first start off by saying that I don't particularly care for these types of levels, but the 6 random story lines got me curious I played through the one where the Richardson guy is killed with his own money (awesome). I went about doing some classic detective work listening to what the characters were saying and then drawing my own conclusion...THE TEXAN DID IT!!!! After making my decision I was hauled off in a police boat and thrown in prison for being a bad police officer and a horrible detective hehehehe. I must say that I chuckled when I read a couple speech bubbles ( due to the accents of charaters) I think you've mastered the story element and I really enjoyed playing it even though I didn't have to jump over hazards or fight an epic boss battle. The boat is SO well put together because the openness in certain areas allows me to see and easily move about. The characters are awesome, frog captain's my favorite, I like how detailed they are even down to their personalities. The only thing that i can say you should improve on are the tiny details..maybe have a riverbank in the distance using the 3d layer glitch...maybe have the boats horn and bell whistles go off every now and then...maybe add some dark shading elements on the bottom of the boat to show that the remnants of that hard ol' Missssssipppppi watar. Just some really keen, tiny visual improvements and I'd say this thing is a masterpiece!!!! :star::star::star::star: keep up the good work. Don't forget to play my level Graffiti Kingdom! | 2010-08-27 14:09:00 Author: Unknown User |
Just remembered some other things that could be improved if possible; a bit of 3d background, some sound effects (e.g. lapping water) and maybe use an alphabet other than MM's one for the lettering (e.g. on the money, signs and boats). http://i.neoseeker.com/mgv/272671-Blackfalcon/671/5/animal0064hb2_display.gif | 2010-08-27 15:20:00 Author: Blackfalcon Posts: 409 |
Really nice feedback. I started replacing the lettering, just a bit slow on that end, so far the money, badge, and detective sign. Because I used all the layers on the boat I was not able to throw in a background...and I have avoided using the 3D just because I am not sure if it will get replaced on LBP2 and mess up the level or if it is there to stay. Does anyone know how safe it is. I would love to toss in a simple distant shore, just don't want to make a glitch level if it is just going to be toast when the glitch is fixed. | 2010-08-27 18:12:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
Just played it, i have to say very nice work, ive played it twice so far and i got them both right, just about to play the third time, its quite addictive, id love to see a series of these, keep up the good work! | 2010-08-27 19:06:00 Author: Merc Posts: 2135 |
Thanks for working so hard on improving the level! =D I'm pretty sure 3D is safe, but I couldn't guarantee that. http://i.neoseeker.com/mgv/272671-Blackfalcon/671/5/animal0064hb2_display.gif | 2010-08-27 21:37:00 Author: Blackfalcon Posts: 409 |
Found the glitch for the emitter that caused a few not to appear. They were set to one emit, but they level must have recorded emiting them once. Just set them to infinate. Added a few more responses for the badge, touched up and replaced all stickers, and the best I could do was only one item in the water, even if I wanted to do the 3D, I will have to delete tons from the level. All of the emitted characters take up tons of space. Hope you like it and the new stickers. Tested all versions of the mysteries and they all were working, but had an overheat at the end and had to delete a few windows to replace with stickers before I could save. If there are more issues please let me know thanks for all your feedback thus far. Oh and thanks for the praise Mercuy77, there is a train and house one planned, but I am still finishing up two other levels that are not along the same lines, but I will get started on the next mystery after those are done. | 2010-08-28 07:35:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
If you want to save thermo try setting your emitters to something like 5 rather than infinite, might help. Can't wait for the next installment! ;D http://i.neoseeker.com/mgv/272671-Blackfalcon/671/5/animal0064hb2_display.gif | 2010-08-28 11:28:00 Author: Blackfalcon Posts: 409 |
Lol, the infinate was on number total emitted, not the number at one time. So it forsome reason was thinking it had emitted them once before and that is why it was not having them appear on some senarios. I had them set to 1 emited and one total ever emited ( was being very stingy). Yeah I have it so maxed I am only emiting one point bubble at a time at a high speed so it seems like several. I forgot about adding more sounds, I had wanted to put in some river boat dings but the thermo went off..I will get to that later after I finish the level I am currently finishing. Again thanks for the help. | 2010-08-28 12:27:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
Replaced most all sticker text with new alphabet... | 2010-09-02 10:03:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
New text looks awesome! I might give this another go sometime, depending on my internet and spare time. http://i.neoseeker.com/mgv/272671-Blackfalcon/671/5/animal0064hb2_display.gif | 2010-09-02 19:06:00 Author: Blackfalcon Posts: 409 |
Cool thanks for all of your help. I think I have fixed every issue listed so far excluding the 3D (I had emailed MM once to ask them about conflicts with LBP2 and they never got back). If you find any more issues please let me know. Also if you get bored, the OK Choice level still has never been beaten, and no feed back...just say'n. | 2010-09-04 05:04:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
MM are asking people to come to PAX and play their LBP1 levels on LBP2 to check for backwards compatability. I'd say the first thing people will check is if the 3D Glitch works so you'll get an answer very soon I expect! http://i.neoseeker.com/mgv/272671-Blackfalcon/671/5/animal0064hb2_display.gif | 2010-09-04 10:24:00 Author: Blackfalcon Posts: 409 |
The MM people never responded to the email, but they must be hit up all the time with those. Did any PAX people ever respond about 3D issues? Oh and I also updated the ending of this level for those who chose wrong...not much, just altered the wording and the way it moved and the way thewhole logic worked...just so it would look a little better. | 2010-09-19 17:07:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
This level was awesome! A fun story, made me think, which I love, and a good level design overall. The characters looked pretty good, I liked the slang some of them used when they spoke. Unfortunately I didn't quite get it right, I'm going to go back and try again, but it was definitely worth the play, and certainly deserves the 5 star rating it has. Some things I would fix, just a couple little spelling mistakes in the description, like luckly for example. The little boiler room looked good but I thought there would be some secret behind the coal, and instead I just got toasted, but that wasn't that big of a deal. Overall, cool level, nice story, and :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3 from me | 2011-01-15 17:47:00 Author: Jayhawk_er Posts: 403 |
Lol, I made that boiler just for that! Was it wrong of me? Maybe I should have a rabbit tell you not to mess around in the area so it doesn't seem so cheap...did you get shot out the pipe too? I really want to leave the traps in, do you think it takes too much away, or can I get away with a few evil tricks...like the rabbits that are not keen on being touched. I fixed that spelling error, if you see others let me know. | 2011-01-15 22:38:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
Absolutely phenomenal level. :star::star::star::star::star: <3 I can't sing my praises enough with this one. One of my absolutely favourites. It looks great, it plays great, it's original and it's highly replayable. I look forward to showing it to all my friends. One small issue: Please add infinite checkpoints, especially since you have made it so easy to die for no good reason just for lulz (the bunny, the boiler etc...) | 2011-01-15 23:30:00 Author: UmJammerSully Posts: 1097 |
OK, good point, since everyone is nice enough to put up with my evil cheap traps in that level (I think there are about seven), I do owe a double checkpoint. I usually avoid them, but seeing as if you choose wrong it is game over, then there is no reason not to infinate before then. Thanks for the praise, I will fix that when I am on tomorrow. Added the infinate, a few little extras, and made it so the boat will move faster to the finish if the player quesses right. I hope in doing so I have not messed up other things, it always seems to happen...but I did not notice issues on my playtest. | 2011-01-16 10:43:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
I do hope to see another OK Murder Mystery in LBP2, with Sackbots! It could be hard to top this one's setting though! http://i.neoseeker.com/mgv/272671-Blackfalcon/671/5/animal0064hb2_display.gif | 2011-01-16 12:42:00 Author: Blackfalcon Posts: 409 |
