The Mysterious Mines of Misfortune

The Mysterious Mines of MisfortuneSX_shookie99
Investigate these mines to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of all the miners.
Took a break from the honey hive series and made this level. i know that a level inside a mine is probably unoriginal at this point but my main focus when i started the level was setting mood and atmosphere and to let everything else take a back seat. i worked hard on mood and atmosphere and really amped up the lighting in this one. once i got into the level i was able to put in some storyline and fairly unique game mechanics. not sure if this level is the calibur you were expecting from me or if this one is worthy of a spotlight. anyway, any feedback is appreciated. here are some pictures...

I played this level and I'm not trying to be mean, but like you said, wasn't vey original since I've seen it before unlike the honey hive. I did think there was still a good bit of gameplay and it was pretty fun even though some parts felt a tiny bit messy. I wasn't too impressed wit the boss but overall, I think you did a good job and I love how you spread out points and it looked like you iused a lot of lighting in this level. I gave it :star::star::star::star:2010-08-15 05:09:00

I really like the atmosphere and use of lights. That was a major plus. The gameplay for the most part was pretty good! (I love riding in mine carts. It's just awesome.) The boss was ok.. He could use a little more texture or something. The dialogue was a tad bit cheesy for me, but it was good. :star::star::star::star:2010-08-15 06:05:00

I agree the setting for this level is not new but I think your clever use of lighting and decorations made it stand out nonetheless. You definitely succeeded in creating a distinctive atmosphere and mood. The sound effects helped with that too. The gameplay was good with some interesting and challenging sections in there. I liked the puzzles with the metal box and the mine cart rides were good - although I ALWAYS forget to be alert about jumping out on time - you caught me out both times, lol!

As others have said the weak point in the level was the boss. I don't mind so much that it was one of those shoot, dodge and wait, shoot, dodge and wait etc paintinator fights but the dragon was visually not up to the same standard as the rest of the level. He was a little simplistic, even cartoonish in style. I think to fit with the setting he needed to be a bit more organic or realistic.

Overall a fun and cool looking level. though. :star::star::star::star::star: and <3

Okay folks, thanks for the great feedback from everyone. i agree that the boss is the weakest part of the level, however, you should give this level another go because i completely changed the boss fight and tweaked the story a little to fit the new boss. you will be surprised, as i feel as though it is my best boss fight to date. let me know what you think. ps, its not a dragon or any other type of beast...and its a hard fight too.2010-08-16 17:32:00

Okay, I'll give it another try later today or tomorrow and tell you what I think about the changes.

Okay, I played it and here's some other things I thought, some of it is about the update and some other things are things I forgot to mention.

I think the new boss was better plus I loved the shoot while jumping over the firey bits coming at you gameplay, pretty fun. I was going to complain about how you forgot to remove the beast sound effects, until I got to the end. When playing the second minecart ride and you have to grab the light, I feel like it might be a little hard to see so I'd remove lights that are around that one light you have to grab. For the second time you move a metal block, after you move and get on it, swing to the left and grab that thing that pulls you up, I think it might be good to put a checkpoint there and if you don't, that's fine, I only died once so it's not much of a problem.

When your at the part with the third metal block I think when you get the jetpack on below you should have something saying don't forget the block because when I first played this level I completely forgot about the block since I already used it and I had to go back to get it. Also, I think there was this one speech bubble that didn't sound right, It said something about a noise I think. Also, I like how you (spoiler) made the guy at the beginning the bad guy but instead of just showing him there you should maybe show him throughout the level and maybe he says I'll be right back then you keep going and he says something like "you fool, prepare to die" tricking you all along.

Overall, I kept my rating at :star::star::star::star:

I'm copying my feedback over from LittleBigNetwork:

Very nice level! Your best yet! the gameplay is amazing and the lighting is well done. I also liked the story and the character models, they reminded me of the miner guy at the end of the Incredibles.
Its an amazingly well done level.... Until the boss fight, it was way to hard, at least for me (but I've never been good at jumping and shooting at the same time).

Still, a very good level! 5 stars and a heart!

And latter I wrote:

The premise of this level is that most of the miners in a mine are missing and only one has gotten out to tell you about it.

The gameplay is superb, varied, original and fun! The mine cart bits are really fun as well as the swingy up things that you grab.
The visuals are very good, its cool how you managed to make grey gas look like smoke over the fire!
The lighting was also very nice, lots of it yet it didn't cause lag like as it does in some levels.

The story is nothing horribly new, but still good. I did like the character models though, they reminded me of the Underminer from the Incredibles lol.

I used to think the boss fight was hard but now after my third time through its actually not the bad. Its a standard paint gun battle, but is made more original by the fact that there are fiery things rolling at you.

Overall an amazing level, your best yet, 5 stars and a heart!
