Exclusive Post-Launch Interview with Alex Evans, questions?

Archive: 60 posts

Long story very short, Alex is willing to answer some of our questions regarding LittleBigPlanet after launch. Here's the full email correspondence:

Hey Alex,

We've spoken before, as you may remember. I'm wondering whether you'd be willing to do a post-release interview. We're interested in your feelings about how the public has received LittleBigPlanet, along with the plans(as specific or non-specific as you'd like to be) Media Molecule has for LittleBigPlanet from here on out. If you're willing, I'll email you some questions which you can then answer at your leisure. What do you think?

Thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael,
I'd love to answer your questions, however I'd ask you wait a short while. It's been a tough few days for us and I'm basically too gutted to answer any questions sensibly!
We'll be back in full service just as soon as we've heard from sony the resolution of this messy delay.

Essentially, we're getting an interview with the other co-creator/co-founder. I'll be sending the questions via email in a week or so. Like I said above, you can suggest questions to ask, but I ask that they fall under these categories:

- Media Molecule's feelings on the public's reception of LittleBigPlanet
- Plans for LittleBigPlanet in the future(DLC, major upgrades, advertising campaigns, etc)
- Plans to support the LittleBigPlanet community

If you come up with another category that fits the overall idea of this interview, feel free to suggest that as well. Overall, I want this interview to be for you guys, to answer any questions you have. At the same time, we have to be succinct; I can't be sending Alex 25 questions for him to answer, as that's just too much. I'll select some of the questions that are suggested and send them over when the time comes.

alright, here are my questions, pick one Michael!
and great! another exclusive interview!

1. Will you charge for DLC, and if so, how much?
2. Will you add contest winner's items from Littlebigchallenges into (free) DLC?
3. Will there be a website you can browse User-Created levels on? (Example: a simple screenshot from the level, the name, description, times played, etc...)

Here's a few questions I'd be interested in getting an answer (they are phrased so that they fit the interview):

We've got a suggestions forum (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=48) at our site for community suggestions on what improvements they'd like to see in LBP. What kind of plans do you have to get feedback from the LBP community?

Now that the game has been released, is the whole Media Molecule team continuing on LBP, or will you scale down the team?

How much of the features you wanted to implement in the game got to the release version?

Will you increase the amount of community interaction now that the game is released - might we have the chance of seeing some LBP developers visiting certain message boards occasionally?

1. Will you charge for DLC, and if so, how much?

He probably wouldn't be able to tell us how much, as different items will probably have different costs.

3. Will there be a website you can browse User-Created levels on? (Example: a simple screenshot from the level, the name, description, times played, etc...)

Some gaming site might handle this, such as IGN, like what they did with the Super Smash Bros. Brawl stages.

What would you do differently if you were designing the game again from scratch?

What happened to the "Ice" danger?

Is there anything you would have liked to see make the final release that didn't?

And by the way, congrats on a great job to both MM and the team for the game, and also, ConCart and the rest of the site staff for such a great site!

LittleBigPlanet has practically endless potential. Do you think there's a realistic possibility for it to remain constantly in development in terms of DLC for the whole of PS3's lifespan, kind of like MMO games for the PC?

Do you have any plans of rewarding some of the most popular user level designers, perhaps with unique items or themes to use in their levels, or somehow else to give even more incentive to excel and be industrious?

Will you take a well deserved vacation once the dust has settled over the release?

here some question i will like to ask

In the future will their be an update where we can use pictures from the harddrive instead of useing the pseye?

will their be keyboard and mouse support?

will you have dlc skin that people will request ie peter griffin?

Will you be able to fix the steping back problem?

In response to the fiasco with the music issue, has that affected the way you look at how the industry is changing in response to such actions?

On the other hand, I want to commend them for the musical selection. Because of this, I have fallen in love with Daniel Pemberton's work. Will we see more from him and other artists through DLC?

Some off the top of my head

1)
Have you got any other tools in mind (or currently working on). I personally would like to see magnetism used in some way, Timers on the wires (so you could set the delay on when it performs the function from when it is switched on), fans for wind use (that would be tweakable for power)
A yes or no would be ok for me (with no specifics) on whether they are currently in production or they have plans for some.

2)
The same as the last question but with Materials. My materials i would like to see would be Water (or more to the point LIQUIDS) which is an obvious one, sand could be fun, jelly (that would wobble), cloth also that could be grabbed and used as a bridge to walk across - Think Armadillo Run if anyone has played that (loved it)

3)
Do you have any plans to have hazards work against each other if needed. For example an object on fire would be put out by water. Or the fire would melt ice (if it is still in or comes back). Also water in contact with electricity would become electrified. Just a thought

4)
Is there any chance of ladders in the game. Like maybe as a thin layer that if you stood in front of you could press up or down to climb. This would make it a lot easier making it up to a platform instead of the makeshift ways we are seeing and it would add to gameplay

5)
Teleportation would be a massive one for me and i would like to know if this is planned. It would be so easy to just have a teleporter that would be just like the respawn points with a in and an out. This would make some very interesting puzzles

That will do for now lol

are there going to be more lethal things like fire and lightening

cause that whole tab only has like 5 things they should add like acid
and lava and i dont know.

Ask him if doc's image importing website is plausible:

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/blog.php?b=10

Whoa, you read that?

I was going to try to sum that up in a shorter question...

Since there is such a demand for image importing, would it be possible to setup a website where players of LittleBigPlanet could police and approve images before they could be used in game?

That doesn't really cover the scope of that blog post but it's close. If you guys can come up with something better I'd appreciate it. I think its a pretty good idea overall.

Mein questions.

1. Do you plan on releasing 'song pack' DLC in the style of Singstar, that is new packs of licensed music to use for our levels?

2. Will LBP support short voice/video clips from the PS Eye at launch or at any point in the future?

I've got a quick question that I think everyone can back me on:

Will more songs be added to the game as DLC? The list seems a little short and I'd love to see more songs by Jim Noir like "All Right" and by Battles like "Bad Trails".

- What is going to be in the first patch?
- Are the jump controls/z plane changing controls going to see any improvements?
- Are you considering offering costumes/levels to help advertise new releases of movies/games? That would be a great way for sony/mm to make money of the game by providing free stuff paid for by the advertisers. Spiderman costume for the new spiderman game for example?

1.Do you have any fears or worries about the release of LittleBigPlanet? If so, what?

2.How did you choose the wonderful voice of Stephen Fry to be the Narrator of LittleBigPlanet?

3.A random question but do you now have the little voice in your head changed to Stephen Fry too?

4.With the beta over, how have you improved on the lag issue in online play? Will there still be traces of it in the full release?

Enjoy guys and cheers :3.

I heard something about, selling user-created levels to Sony, or MM, can't remember who... But is this true? If so, what will it be used for, and if not, is there any chance this could happen in the future?

i would like to know if each person could make a production team site

like myspace or bebo, with links and pic, where people could because subcriber where they get to play level first or to test the level and get excluives, and people could join the team

So it would be like a fan site just that you the one who made it

here a question that bugging me

where do you keep all the publish levels, is their like secrate mm base under ground with tons of severs, and how will you unsure that the level wont get deleted if some happend to the severs

I listed my personal top 8 of questions I found in this thread. They are not in order from best to worst but are all just as good.

1. What would you do differently if you were designing the game again from scratch?

2. What happened to the "Ice" danger?

3. Is there anything you would have liked to see make the final release that didn't?

4. Have you got any other tools in mind (or currently working on). One I came up with myself:

What sort of content would be free and what do we need to pay for. For example: New costumes are paid for but updates like building materials are free?? (you can delete the example)

How about..

Would it be possible to break from the one shared screen setup for different game modes like tag, infection, or capture the littlebigflag?

Just to let you guys know, I fully support the same screen setup for the game type we're all anxious to play but I think it would be pretty cool to play littlebigtag.

Edit: Oh yeah. Just in case this isn't in the final version of the game..

Will there be a way to prevent others from copying your level?
