Cutscene Help

Hey all.... I'm baaaaaack!

I'm working on a quick sequence with four camera set-ups that I want to play out panning across an object. I can't seem to get the camera's to work in order or stay on long enough to play out properly and have been mucking with it for several days now (and getting more frustrated by the minute). I don't know if my set-up is too complicated... or not complicated enough.

I'm wondering if anyone could tell me if they know of any good levels or video's that explain the intricacies of creating great cutscenes that play out like movie trailers (much like Johnees scii-fi trailer for one of his levels). Or conversely, if anyone here on the forum is well versed in the method, would they be willing to pop into my level with me and help tweak my setup so that it flows better and the magic mouths stay on longer. I've tried everything I can think of and still can't get four camera's to cut together in order.

Frustratedly yours

Are you using delay switches to turn the cameras on? Using switches to activate cameras in conjunction with adjusting the track player setting can yield some really nice results.

Sorry, I should have clarified that I'm using Magic Mouths as camera's as they have more versatility where zooming in/out and angles are concerned. I've got the magic mouths set up on mag keys. I've set them up as both one shot and on/off... but I just can't seem to get them to fire properly or stay on long enough. The mouths are set up on pistons that slowly track across parts of the object. When the piston reaches it's full length, it triggers the next piston and mouth... at least, that's the theory. :S2010-08-13 16:50:00

Just put the moving mouths on blocks of dissolve material; when they trigger the next mouth, they also trigger their own dissolve block, allowing for a clean transition from mouth to mouth. (Hah! That sounds funny!)2010-08-13 17:00:00

That sounds genius Jake! I'll give that a shot and see if it helps my dilema.2010-08-13 17:26:00

Might be worth checking out this post (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=9218-Cinematic-control-using-magic-mouths-Do-s-and-Don-ts).2010-08-13 19:17:00

Thanks Aya. I did a search but nothing seemed to come up... I'll check that post out.

Cheers!

Lol... Funny that it's a post by Thegide. We've actually met once before as he lives in my city. Great guy too. Maybe I'll call him up and coax him over again with the promise of a six pack for a little help.

Make a block of dark matter and a vehicle in the shape of a upper case T. You want to put 2 wheels at the top of the T and a mag key at the bottom. Place the T on top of the block and find where the mag key is. Put mag switches with 180 trigger radius facing away. Changing the radius will change the length of time the magic mouth lasts for. On the edge of the previous trigger radius place another mag switch. This should give a smooth and quick switch over to the next magic mouth.

If you need more explanation I will post some pictures (just PM me)

I think I know what you mean assassinator, I'll give that a shot tomorrow when I have some more time to mess around.

Thanks

have u tried this? make a delay switch that moves the magnetic key down a long piece of dark matter. along it's (key) path, set as many key switches as you require. wire them up to magic mouths in the order u want each one to activate. adjust the position & trigger radius for each switch to control when a magic mouth starts, & when it closes.

that kind of device also lets u add sounds, changes in music ect, timed with the cutscene

& make sure the magic mouths stay in-camera, or the cutscene will disappear too quickly.

Yes, I tried that sellfcon. I've tried all sorts of different methods now and nothing seems to work. I'm starting to think that maybe my object is too large and that is why I can't keep the mouths all on screen at the same time. I may have to break the object up into smaller pieces and somehow cheat to get the effect I want. Sigh.2010-08-17 17:15:00

What you can do if you can't get them onscreen at the same time, is to do a near-instantaneous switch. So if you're triggering a mouth that's offscreen, immediately de-trigger the one that came before it so it doesn't have time to auto-close.2010-08-17 20:10:00

Make a thin piece of darkmatter nearly invisible. Add your invisible magic mouths to another different material thin layer square and shrink that down almost to the point of invisibilty. Connect the two with piston set to invisible. Shrink down. glitch to foreground so its out of the way safe. Develope your timing mechanism. You've now got an invisible panning camera you have direct control of.2010-08-17 20:42:00

I don't think I can get this working. I'm an artist not a programmer, and learn by seeing rather than explanation of this kind. I'm so frustrated right now I just may give up and wait for LBP2 where we will have decent cameras instead of these lousy ones and magic mouths!

*Sigh*.
