Need some advice...

Archive: 9 posts

I've been working on a level for some time (about 6 + months) that showcases and gives away (yes gives away) virtually my entire music collection on LBP. (Going to college soon. )

Now I've asked most of my friends for publishing advice.

Some of them say (I won't say any names. Don't like to put people on the spot) I should just publish unbarred, open and free for any and everyone in the LBP community.

Some say I should publish for friends exclusively, and let it spread throughout by a sort of "hear-say method".

Right now, I'm leaning toward the 2nd choice, but I'm unsure...

If I do follow the first choice, I know it's going to generate a lot of levels in which people (noobs) showcase my work and pretend it's theirs. I'm indifferent to people giving me credit, but I don't think it will be good to enable people to advocate thievery and unoriginality in order to get hearts. (Do we really need more stephanie ravens?) It just seems I'll be doing more bad than good.

On the plus side though, if i follow through with plan 1, my hard 6 months of work won't go unnoticed and will get plenty of deserved exposure.

Now if follow the second plan, sure I'll be sharing my work with others and my work will be enjoyed by someone other than myself...but at the same time, I'll be missing an opportunity to really get what 6 months of work deserves. .

So far it's seems I'm having to make a choice of what is important to me: Exposure or simple self-indulgence.

I know that in the end I'll have to make the decision for myself...but maybe you guys can influence me a little?

I'd really like to know your opinions.

How about this:
publish if for friends for the first day or so, to get the ratings up. Then unlock it, but leave it un-copyable untill it peaks. Then, once it hits cool pages, or gets a certian number of hearts, make it copyable.

I think you should publish it for everybody but don't make any object and the level copiable so people won't say it's their work and steal them.2010-08-13 04:58:00

I would say just make it copyable. If you worry about how the community is going to behave, then you're just going to get frustrated. While there are plenty of great community members, there are a LOT more who are schmucks and you're never going to be able to keep a handle on them. Any attempts to do so will end up limiting the non-schmucks too. It's kinda' like DRM's on digital media: they're great in theory but they end up making the media less accessible to legitimate customers as well as the illegitimate ones (I won't buy anything drm'ed simply because it's too much hassle to use... except psn dlc*, of course).

If you feel compelled to try to reign in the madness a bit, I would publish the level locked for a day and then unlock it: that way, even if others republish it, yours will always be ahead of them by at least a day. If you're after stars and hearts (why?), get the key to all your friends and ask them to five star/heart it during that locked day.

*psn dlc has managed a decent compromise: it's locked to specific systems but a single purchase enables it on five systems. Sony takes a hit on people sharing dlc, but less than they would with unlocked dlc and customers take a small hit on ease of use, but quite a bit less than if the dlc were locked to a single system.

It isnt about making the level copyable, it is about the amount music cant physically fit into a single level, or even twenty single levels for that matter.
The only way to distribute this music is by giving away as prizes, thats the issue.

If it were me Id have it open to every one, you will get people taking credit and claimming your work as their own. That cant be stopped, the only way to prevent that would be to not give it away at all. With friends still having access to it, your music will still find its way in to other peoples hands.

And I think that would be a real shame to not publish, that six months of work which is all beautiful music would be wasted in my eyes... I know you dont want to do that.

So go with your heart, not your mind and do what feels best.
What ever you do will be right... not wrong, so dont feel pressured into a decision.

Well, you could leave a calling card sticker under another sticker on each of your music devices.
Even if you are giving away the music in the form of prize bubbles, Just adding the phrase "-Now Copyable" to the title will help distribution. Just make sure you actually make it copyable when you do. lol
