Contraction Distraction Reviews

Archive: 23 posts

Hi all. Looking for a level review? We can give you two for the price of one. Introducing: The Contraction Distraction, a new lbp review sight where two of us will play through your level at the same time.

Here is how it works...

Aesthetics - 20/20
This section is dedicated to the looks of your level. Are the colors coordinated? Do the decorations add to the level? Does the lighting allow for you to see anything at all?

Mechanics - 20/20
Also a high scorer is the technical aspects of your level. How bad are your glitches? How user-friendly are the jump pads? How easy is it to get stuck to the point where self-destruction is the only solution?

Creativity - 15/15
In this section, we give points for originality and creative use of the tools you have at your disposal. What have you done that is different? Where did you stretch the imagination of LBP?

Flow -15/15
Here, we judge the pace of the level from start to finish. Are there enough checkpoints, and are they well spaced? Does the same puzzle repeat too much? These kinds of considerations make a good level worth playing over again for sackboys of all skill levels.

Theme -15/15
For 15 points, how does everything in your level fit the overall theme? Do the sound effects and lighting enhance the atmosphere you are trying to create? You will likely lose points for putting skulls in a Happy Princess level.

Likability -10/10
This is where you get points for how much we enjoyed playing your level. We can't always explain why a level is so much fun, but we CAN give you points for it.

Multi-Player 5/5
Finally, we judge how well your level works for more than one player. You can still get an A on your level if it is made for just 1 player, but it will never be perfect if friends can't enjoy it together.

And that's how it works. You get a score out of 100, which we break down for you into each of the above sections. Then we explain why we gave you the scores that we did. Your level will also get a difficulty rating (easy, impossible, or somewhere in-between) which is separate from your score. We may offer a couple of suggestions for improvement, which you are welcome to do with as you wish.

For now if you want a review, give us a reply post there or here with your psn and level name. A little description might help, too. You can get all the details on our blogger site: The Contraction Distraction (http://ctxdtx.blogspot.com).

P.S. This is a new review setup, so there is no waiting list. Only one level at a time per user, please.

Sounds interesting. I would love an analysis for my level.

Name: Onion Gale
PSN: NiKfY

It is a jumping challenge level, subdivided into eight stages. The more you progress, the harder it gets.

Hey folks. Thanks for your interest. We will be reviewing both of your games tonight and should have reviews posted by tomorrow night. I can't wait to see what kind of survival challenges you have put together.2010-08-15 22:40:00

Onion Gale
by NiKfY

Aesthetics - 14/20
The game starts with an emphasis on mechanics, so you don't really expect to be dazzled by graphics. Everything is simple, which is fine for this sort of level. Still, a little more decoration wouldn't hurt.

Mechanics - 19/20
Couldn't find any glitches, and the layouts for some of the jumps were quite effective. We liked that a well-timed jump could actually send you forward. For a level with emphasis on mechanics, we were not disappointed.

Creativity - 11/15
There wasn't anything that wow'ed us, but the good use of simple mechanics was a refreshing experience.

Flow -15/15
Just as promised, each challenge got more intense. The challenges are long, but plenty of infinity checkpoints are along the way so that you don't lose hard-earned progress. Also appreciate the scoreboards after each major challenge, so that anyone not wanting to invest hours can still enjoy the earlier stages of your level.

Theme -11/15
We appreciate the attempt to classify each area of the jumping challenge with a different theme. It helped a lot with the mood, but some of the themes (like the first one) seemed a bit forced.

Likability - 8/10
My wife does not enjoy jumping levels as much as I do, so we did not play many run-through's deep into the level. Still, for what it was it was very enjoyable. I personally want to keep playing to master the last area.

Multi-Player 4/5
Lots of times that other players get left behind, but that's the way these racing levels go.

Total Score: 82
Difficulty: Intermediate
A very good level, and lots of fun to play. Difficulty will be rated higher for those that wish to take the full 8-stage challenge. If you are looking for a challenge to Sackboy's key skill, this is the level for you. The level could use a bit of sprucing up with decorations and sounds, but we won't force the author if that isn't where his heart lies.

Pollen Maiden (survival)
by MGO_Count

Aesthetics - 19/20
A beautiful level, with adjustable lighting and sound. The killer pollen is so beautiful that you will watch it descend with a smile on your face and forget to move your sackboy out of the way until after he dies. Only possible complaint was that there was so much going on at the start of the level it was hard to get our bearings.

Mechanics - 18/20
Genius use of some neat mechanics and effects. Love the life-keeper (rare is the survival level that you get multiple attempts). The visual effects really enhance the experience with flying butterflies and falling dewdrops. Unfortunately the basic portal does not allow for 3 lives if you are playing more than one player, and the door drop to repeat the level glitches with multiple players as well.

Creativity - 15/15
The options menu at the start is genius, and the way the bonus coins work is a neat touch as well. My wife loves that you change the prize every week for playing the level.

Flow -13/15
The flow of the level is hard to figure out, but it works beautifully once you do. A single player gets 3 attempts to survive, and most of the action happens in the one room that you can revisit.

Theme -15/15
Plants, butterflies, dewdrops...everything builds to enhance the 'pollen' them, and strengthens the other level's qualities as well (mechanics, aesthetics, etc).

Likability - 10/10
My wife is addicted to your level, and she hates most survival levels. Replay-ability is high, especially with the new prizes.

Multi-Player 2/5
The level would normally work well for multiple players, but with the limiting checkpoint at the life counter you can only play it twice with two players. 3 or 4 will not work at all. Still, if you only want to play through once, the main room has plenty of space for 4 players.

Total Score: 92
Difficulty: Intermediate
Beautiful, creative, and lots of fun. A level that we will be visiting over again. Not much room for improvement, and too much tinkering may take away from the good already done. Looking forward to seeing what other levels come from this creator.

Thanks a lot for the review! Glad to hear that you guys had a good time. Also, your review format is great.

BTW, did you guys see the warp zone in my level? Cause if you want to replay the last stage, you could just warp there without having to replay the whole level.

Draconia Cave
by ShamgarBlade

Aesthetics - 20/20
Everything seemed to add to the feel of going in an underground nuclear-radiation creepy place. Lighting, decorations, sounds, and even the enemies were all very aesthetically pleasing.

Mechanics - 17/20
We ran into a glitch where one plant-monster toppled over in a tunnel and we could not kill it. So we pushed him down the tunnel and over the edge so that we could get past him. The boss was brilliant, but it took a while to figure out it was safe to drop down and kill that last pod you couldn't see before.

Creativity - 14/15
Very nice work. Everything was brilliant, though we would have liked to see more enemies besides two plant creatures and a boss. Still, minus one glitch, what we did have was very cleaver.

Flow -11/15
The story ended abruptly, with lots of questions. Why was the giant plant spawning only 2 monsters? What was the source of the mutating radiation? Did we actually clear out the underground and save the world? For what we had, there was a nice flow but it needed a little more or perhaps a sequel to finish.

Theme -15/15
Again, everything matched the theme beautifully. You really felt that you were underground, swimming through contaminated water and jumping around in old mining shafts.

Likability - 8/10
Enjoyed it with a 4 star rating. Just wish there was a little more to the level as a whole.

Multi-Player 4/5
For the most part, your level was very multi-player friendly, even though it didn't seem like you went out of your way to make it so. The only difficult part was where your level really shined: the boss fight. Crowded platform and off camera-angle may have been done on purpose, but it still hurts the multi-player experience.

Total Score: 89
Difficulty: Easy
Lovely level, and lots of fun. The playtime/story-content ratio was a bit off, but still lots of fun. Brilliant boss fight, and a great eye for aesthetics. Definitely a level that is worth checking out.

Just a quick side-note, we recently had our first baby. As such, the time for video games is a bit limited. For reviews, we will be posting 2 a week on Monday (one more to come tonight), just so you know how long you have to wait.
Next week we will post reviews of the next 2 levels: Beasts of the Baron by Smudge228, and Rasumii's Journey of a Thousand Inches.

FIRESTARTER
by ladylyn1

Aesthetics - 20/20
Very simple as far as materials and decorations, but incredibly effective. There is a virtual feel to the level, and an intensity as well. The music is intense, and the camera angles are perfect. Love the look of the shadow as well.

Mechanics - 20/20
I personally really enjoyed this level's use of the 3 layers to get around challenges. The ghost replay, intro video, and challenge rating were also quite impressive. Most of them I have no idea how they were even managed. No glitches found. Everything worked smoothly and effectively.

Creativity - 15/15
Everything mentioned in the Mechanics section was brilliant. While the majority of the level was your basic time-jump and grab-swing action that sackboy is usually involved in, the intense challenge and the little tweaks of how to use his basic skills made for a brilliant level. 15 points just isn't enough for creativity here.

Flow -15/15
We both love how the intro video is optional, so you can be as involved in the plot or just the challenge as you want. The game is quite challenging, and the timer has a perfect length to balance urgency with possibility. Portals were well-placed. No complaints at all.

Theme -15/15
The theme was simple and really effective. You were in a race, and there was plenty of fire for the level to live up to its name. It really felt like a virtual race.

Likability - 9/10
5 stars easy. Although my wife and I never got past the rookie status when we finished, we both got quite competitive about the score and would play the level over and over again. The only thing that would have made it better is if we could have played together, though I am certain she would have left me to burn many a time.

Multi-Player 0/5
The level says: "1 player only. Have everyone else die so they can sit back and watch." Well, that isn't exactly how it is put, but you get the idea. Still, we had to try. After all we ARE trying to do reviews for multiplayers. And the level creator is right. You absolutely CANNOT play this level with more than one player at a time. It really ruins it.

Total Score: 96
Difficulty: Insanely Hard
A brilliant level and very intense. The only real possible complaint is that the level is restricted to one player. Even so it made our favorites, and if you like playing levels solo then it will make your favorites too. An especially fun level for competitive players. Can you beat the Firestarter?

Thanks for the reviews, but can I change which level you're reviewing for me? I've got a new level out called 'The Land of the Midnight Sun' and if you could review this level instead of the mysterious forest I'd be very happy. 2010-08-26 11:38:00
