Invasion of the Sack Men From Space! *very nearly SPOTLIGHTED*

Invasion of the Sack Men From Space!SpeedyMcKnuckles
It's panic in the streets, as Little Big City is invaded by flying saucers! Too bad you've got to go out into it...
I've been working on this for what seems like almost a month now, and I think it's finally done.

http://i831.photobucket.com/albums/zz232/Paul_Bathrick/lbp/APhoto-1.jpg http://i831.photobucket.com/albums/zz232/Paul_Bathrick/lbp/Saucer_1.jpg http://i831.photobucket.com/albums/zz232/Paul_Bathrick/lbp/Grocery.jpg http://i831.photobucket.com/albums/zz232/Paul_Bathrick/lbp/APhoto_3.jpg
http://i831.photobucket.com/albums/zz232/Paul_Bathrick/lbp/APhoto_4.jpg

This is my tribute to B-movies. Bad special effects, bad costumes, over-the-top dialogue and grand adventure await you as you journey through movies like they just don't make'em any more on the quest for what all Sacks desire most.

The level is best played with one player, and has timed speech. So take your time and enjoy the cheese.

I'd call it moderate length and fairly easy difficulty.

Special thanks to Cornersting for helping me come to grips with speech timing, and to Lockstitch for stopping by when one of my pistons wouldn't fire. Also, I used some fonts from Comphermc, so thanks to him for those.

Please comment, either here or on the level itself with your thoughts and suggestions, and any bug or glitches. Lots can break in this one. edit: Going ahead and trying out F4F. Hit me up!

This is a part 1. Part 2 is somewhere down the pipeline, but for now: Hope you all enjoy the Invasion!

Thanks Black-Tooth! Hope you like it!

OK, I've been in this one tweaking a lot.

Lockstitch mentioned that some of the corners looked sloppy. I went in with a corner editor and did my best. I restickered some dissolve to hide it better, and added a plethora more points toward the end. I'm really nervous about this one, since I'm trying lots of stuff that's pretty new for me, and I have virtually no idea so far how it's doing right now. I can't even see a stars rating yet!

Give it a try folks! It's nothing if not unique!

I thought that was really fun and very characterful. I really enjoyed the simple humour of going out to get some milk when there's an invasion going on.

If I had to give you any feedback on parts I did not like it would be that those step ladders you pull on to unfold. It's not a big deal, but if you hold on to the ball until the steps are fully down, you fall to the bottom each time and it gets a little repetative when you've got to jump up 3 or 4 of them in one go. If you don't know what I mean, add me to friends and I'll play the level and show you.

Although that crit took up a lot of text it is a very MINOR crit and probably not worth worrying about! A lot of fun indeed!

I haven't had much feedback on the level, but out of the few who have posted in game, most have mentioned those stairs. I was really proud of the unfolding mechanism and always hopped off the grab switch in time, since I knew it was set by dissolve block to stay down once activated. Thanks for narrowing the problem down. The strings are much shorter now, and should drop you each time on the bottom section of each set of stairs.

Also, speaking of the infamous stairs, last night I added a secret room with a fourth prize bubble.

Well isn't that ironic, I just played this level yesterday and I never even noticed this thread!

Awesome level, insta-heart, blah blah blah, it's all in the comment I made yesterday. Great job.

Oh, and I think people would like the pull-down stairs a bit more if you replaced the string connecting the stairs and the sponge with a piston and make it so that the piston gets shorter as you grab it.

Is that a saucer on a string?
Man I am so playing this. Expect my feedback in a day or so.

Well I just played your level & beginning with the tv waa pretty cool but the doors I didnt really like with the switches & bolts showing...but the outside part was pretty awesome cept for when you climb up the 3 ball things the 3rd one is to high to reach unless I missed something??2010-08-15 01:47:00

Hmm... I just raised those this morning because they were swinging too low. I tested them. The last one took a pretty big jump, but I got it.
The real fun is further into the level, so I hope you'll give it another try. I'll lower that grab switch a bit right now.

edit: Yeah, it was too high. I had tested it in create mode, but maybe when I rewound it to reset the apparatus, that one string found itself at the wrong setting. I'm very sorry to anybody who experienced this malfunction. You should be able to finish the level now.

Absolutely wonderful intro! Something about the monochrome bothers me, but that's not too big a deal.

However... I did get stuck in Sally's room... I had to hold the grab switch for quite some time before it let me out.

The third Sackman's dialogue after the fighter jet landed on the one dude (which was awesome) freaked out and wouldn't let me read it... I'm guessing due to messed up proximity or something.

Also, as someone who does secret rooms a lot, I found it ironically easier to get in than out the one on the staircase. Part of it was because it was monochrome which was freaking out my eyes, but also because I had to jump to get out...

I don't know if you meant to leave your emitters/strings on the space ship visible or not, but they're there. (Edit: I realize now that's part of the B-Movie specialness, so you're good )

I do love the stuff blowing up. So much explosivey goodness.

While the reporter was talking, I got squished by the spaceship that landed. Made me sad inside.

Loved the "aliens" and their bolts of doom.

I wasn't really sure what was going on in the hardware shop. I thought I had broken it. I love the idea of the milk gun.

And running over the aliens... priceless. In fact, most of the humor/story in this is fantastic. Well done.

I got squished at the top of the radio tower... which kind of annoyed me since I had to climb it all over again.

Overall, great level. I wish it had some color or something, but that's your prerogative. Loved the humor, etc. :star::star::star::star: and a <3. I enjoyed it greatly.

If you would kindly post some feedback on my level, I'd appreciate it: Commander Keen: Goodbye Galaxy - Part II (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=33062-Commander-Keen-Goodbye-Galaxy-Part-II)

Ryhas, I love that you do these comprehensive breakdowns when you play through a level. Extremely helpful.

The monochrome camera effect is definitely a personal choice for this level. Wanting to try something in black and white was one of the reasons I made this. That and after all the hidden strings dangling ghostly bottles in Uncle Spooky's, I thought it might be fun to do something where you can see the strings. Glad you caught that too. Between those two ideas, the next leap my brain made was to what you see in the level.

Sally's door is on my first "or" switch, as necessity dictated. I was so proud of myself for making one, it never occurred to me that I should speed the piston up. LOL

The guys in the street don't say anything important. It's all atmospheric, and a little hit and miss because they're all running back and forth and they interfere with each other sometimes. I'm just glad you were interested enough to want to know what he said.

No complaint on the stairs?? That's a win for me! The secret room was a little rushed. I'll smooth it out soon.

Sorry the spaceship squashed you. It's happened to me a couple of times too, but the only fix I can think of for it is to block your path somehow until the cinema is over, and nothing that wouldn't break up the scene has come to mind.

The hardware shop. I struggled with the sounds in there, and I'm still not happy with them. I want it to sound like you're building something. There's surprisingly little in the speakers that sounded right to me.

Sorry my level dealt you another cheap death on the radio tower. I'll look into it.

Thanks also for mentioning all the things you liked. Made me happy inside. Thanks so much for playing the level. I'll strive to be half as thorough as you were in my assessment of both parts of Commander Keen.

Thanks! Hope you enjoy it!

I just finished a pretty big update. I took a note from SushiGummy's idea and made the grabs go up when the stairs come down. On winches, though, not pistons. Thanks SushiGummy!
Also, I tended to a couple of the technical concerns brought to my attention by Ryhas, and I really think it made the level better. Thanks Ryhas!

While I was in, I added some sound effects and lights. Maybe not even noticeable, but there were a couple parts during my test plays where I thought something was missing. My thermometer is really mad now, but she seems to be holding together.

Thanks everybody for the interest in the level. One more play and I'll have my first 100.

edit: I meant to play Commander Keen tonight, but got all stuck in edit mode. Gotta get a little sleep before work tomorrow. Stayed up stupid late. I'll try and do F4F tomorrow after worky-work.

+ Love the little buttons on the sofa!
- Triangular hole in the wood to the left of the TV, I assume it's dark matter or something.
- I don't like how the first door hits the light, the right side grab on the first door doesn't do anything, and the second door crushed Sally on the way back down. Poor Sally! Easy fixes though.
+ Nice sackboy/girl characters and interesting magic mouth text.
- Need some corner editing on the top of the stairs, where the bolt is, was distracting for me.
- You spawn the the back layer under the space ship, this makes it hard to see where the edge of the platform (to the right) is. Even if you switch to the front layer to see the ledge, the jump to the ship is harder because it's on a different layer.
+ Great how you used the robot costume head for the aliens, feels really B movie. Nice gas use on the door/alien speech.
+ The milk gag. And the sudden laser beam explosion from the alien from the left!
- The alien didn't make a dying sound when he gets crushed from the rolling globe.
+ Running over the aliens!

Aww, I have to wait for the sequel to save Sally.
Sounds were great throughout, as was the B-movie style. Great story/characters/speech/humor, etc.
Biggest niggles:
- Bubble placement, hard to get a combo going, placed fairly randomly. And then they doubled in size at the tower?
- Corner editing, need to just touch up a few bits.
- Layer switching, some parts had me unintentionally changing layers.

Despite the niggles, I had fun, which is the name of the game, and the charm increased my rating to 5 stars and got you a level heart.
A custom level icon would help your level also.

I'm very glad you're interested in the sequel. It's probably going to take place mostly inside the ship, and therefore have a different style of design. I'm still thinking about how to go about it, but be patient. It will become a reality.

Your niggles are legitimate. I didn't notice the hole next to the TV. The second door switch is just there for decoration because I honestly didn't think anyone would want to go back inside the apartment. I've had Sally get crushed too, but I thought I had fixed it with timing: It's been awhile since it happened. Bubble placement is pretty random. I wasn't thinking about combos, just wanted some pickups in there. Layer switching, the same. Just didn't register as a problem. Easy fix. Thanks for pointing out specific corners that bugged you. I'll see if they'll let me fix them. (some shapes won't budge due to complication.) All aliens have the same death speaker rigged for destruction. It's been bugging me that a couple of them don't go off too.

I'm bleary eyed from not enough sleep before work, but was very pleasantly surprised that you thought it was worth five stars despite the hang-ups! Made me feel all warm and fuzzy.

I've actually already tried your Sound n Space level but didn't comment because my noobish skills weren't letting me finish. I'll try again.

Thanks so much for your honest critique! Gotta peel myself away and get ready for work now.

I absolutely loved this level! This has to be one of the most original levels I have played so far! (I loved the humor)

Pros
- Black and White look really adds to the whole environment.
- The aliens were great, nice design.
- The scene at the very beginning was very well executed.
- Milk Gun.
- The mayhem overall haha.
- The "Duh Duh DUUUUUUHHH" moment where the plot thickens.

Cons
- I really can't think of anything terribly bad.
- It is a little confusing on where to go when the building blows up and falls over.

Oh for the ship in the sequel, you should have those cheezy automatic sliding doors that go "chhiii..." but un-sync them and maybe show a hand pulling them or something.
Yeah, just work on those bubbles/corners/layers, and your next level will be awesome.
It might not be your lack of skill on my level, it's most likely one of the hardest levels out there. You can always use the (newly detailed) sticker switch "cheat" to finish it if need be.
Yeah work sucks.
Oh btw, I had an awesome dream (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=33276-Finally-had-a-dream-about-an-alien-invasion.-o) last night thanks to your level!

Thanks, ShamgarBlade! I'm amazed at all the positive feedback this level is getting! It's over 100 plays now! For me, that's huge.

I'm going to try and get my F4F's done tonight guys, so keep an eye on your threads. Also, I'll work on an update concerning some of midnight_heist's niggles. I'm gonna leave the prize bubbles where they are, but I'll do some corner editing, try to save poor Sally from her insidious door, and fix the layer issues on the checkpoints. Expect that tomorrow.

Thanks for the ideas for part 2, midnight. We're on the same wavelength. Also... crazy dream, man. I posted on your thread about it.

Thanks everybody for helping me make this my first successful level! I'm beside myself right now!

I really liked this level! It was quite witty, and the cardboard cutouts were really well done! I especially liked the fire escape type staircase which you created - although it may have a been a little overused in the beginning, I found that very enjoyable! The milk gag was really good, and I loved the sequence when he travelled through the hardware shop, and managed to create the "Milk gun"! That was a great idea, and added to the cinematic experience of the level. The alien's saucers and the alien's rays need to be looked at a little I think - in terms of if you stand close to them, they don't go off, but it was nice to have a change from the usual plasma balls that are shot out by enemies, and I appreciate you taking the time to make your own danger hazard! I liked the bit when the ace reporter is doing his bit, and the aliens come down and basically explained how much the human race ruined everything...

One tip - at the beginning, why not use the camera tool so you can't see past the right wall of the apartment - just a suggestion! Of course it's up to you - It's just me being fussy rather than anything wrong with your actual level.

I loved it. Great work - be sure to let me know when the 2nd part is coming out, I simply can't wait to play it. If it's anything like this, I know it will be awesome!

hearted!

Thanks, standby!

Thanks to you and a couple others for mentioning the cut-outs! I spent some time on those cut-outs, from posing my Sacky for all the different roles, to meticulously turning pictures into characters that I hoped people would care about. Lots more from the zany cast coming in part 2!

I'm sooo glad everybody seems to dig the milk gun. I was a little nervous about "redefining" the beloved paint gun, and I'm really glad I took the gamble.

The ray guns are a little random. The arms wobble and they're all on proxy switches, so everything has to be lined up for them to fire. It makes them a little less threatening, but at the same time, something might blow up on your second playthrough that didn't on your first. I was really torn whether to make them shoot straight, or let'em wobble... Part 2 will probably have a little of both.

More on the motives of the Sack Men From Space in part 2. Still some deciding to do on my part as to which of two directions to take that in.

I'm going to try and remember to take your suggestion about the camera angle in the apartment... as long as it doesn't mess with the cutscenes. It's a great idea!

Ryhas, I love that you do these comprehensive breakdowns when you play through a level. Extremely helpful.
Hey, no problem! I figure I'll forget if I don't do it while I'm playing (my memory tends to be spotty at best).

No biggie, and that's (of course) totally cool. The alternate lightings have always thrown me off, so it's just a matter of my opinion, not a matter of the quality of your level.

Sally's door is on my first "or" switch, as necessity dictated. I was so proud of myself for making one, it never occurred to me that I should speed the piston up. LOL
Haha, I understand there! (Made myself some switches too before stumbling upon the Logic Pack here, which saved my life).

No complaint on the stairs?? That's a win for me! The secret room was a little rushed. I'll smooth it out soon.
Well, I DID keep falling off the stairs, but I figured they were cool and I generally tend to be somewhat clumsy anyway.

Sorry the spaceship squashed you. It's happened to me a couple of times too, but the only fix I can think of for it is to block your path somehow until the cinema is over, and nothing that wouldn't break up the scene has come to mind.
What I did for Part II of my Keen stuff was I created two emitters that emitted timed, invisible dark matter (turn off the grid, make it really really small, and then place it, drag a box over it if you need to select it again). The invisible wall lasted for only four seconds, but it was enough to keep the players from running off or getting squished.

The hardware shop. I struggled with the sounds in there, and I'm still not happy with them. I want it to sound like you're building something. There's surprisingly little in the speakers that sounded right to me.
I struggle with finding sounds all the time. Drives me nuts! On a side note, I wonder if you could play with some emitters and create flying pieces of rubble or something as well?

Sorry my level dealt you another cheap death on the radio tower. I'll look into it.
I'm discovering often that I get magically squished in places that nobody else does, haha. This time, though, I was rotating on the radar thingys, which squished me against something (don't remember what, maybe the other radar thingy?)

Thanks also for mentioning all the things you liked. Made me happy inside. Thanks so much for playing the level. I'll strive to be half as thorough as you were in my assessment of both parts of Commander Keen.
Again, no problem! And I enjoyed your review (good to have suggestions, criticisms, and things you liked all in one post)!

I played this yesterday, and commented in game, but not here.

I did dislike the stairs, and also the cars were rather annoying, just because they were quite easy to get stuck in, or I'm just so special that I got stuck in them three times by luck.

Altogether a very fun level, I liked that it was all in Black and White, and definitely had that "oldie" feel.
Reminded me of that old Alien game... Where you collected Dna/spinal cords or something...

Sorry the stairs and cars frustrated you. I see what you're saying about sometimes getting stuck in the cars and I'm surprised it didn't come up sooner. My wife (and beta tester) hates them. I put them there as a temporary way up, and just really dug them. Yeah, you can fall in, and it's a little tricky getting out, but it's easy enough I think to get back up and onto the stairs that they'll be ok where they are.

Glad you liked the level overall! I'm not sure what game you're thinking of, but the level's supposed to be nostalgic in many different ways, so I'm glad you found something in it!

Alright I finally cut the time to drop by & replay this level and heres my feedback:

Positives:
+Intro was pretty good job on the intro I like the way to made how that looked
+Visual on how it looked were great but bit choppy in few areas.
+Gameplay was good all the way no problems at all.
+Platforming was fun going through the store to get the milk & the part with the building falling.

Negatives:
-Hide the emitters on the ships after the 3 balls you climb up in the beginning.
-When you arrive in the woods with the reporter 1st two speech bubbles are fine but instead of us running & speech bubble pop up then run then another pop up just make logic that plays all 3 once in radius.
-Right before you jump into the car the speech bubble had popped up soon as I jumped toward car and disappeared..I think if you move it back some it should be fine.
-After the ride the ground at the far right end near building is little choppy, you should use corner editor & remove it but this isnt to serious..Overall-:star::star::star:

Thanks for the review, Sabre.

I'm glad you liked the intro, visuals and platforming! I had a lot of fun making it!

The emitters showing was actually an aesthetic choice. You don't see them at the beginning, then the guy in the street say "somethin's opening up on one of the ships". I thought about having him say "It looks like some sort of emitter..." but I didn't want to be too obvious. Part of the B-Movie goodness. It was funny to me, anyway.

I'm not sure I know the logic your talking about for the scene in the park. The sensors for the mouths are keyswitches placed along a track while a rolling key-mover sets them off one by one. There are actually six or seven of them in the scene, plus special effects. I'm learning things as I need them, and that scene is as good as I can get it, for now. I may take Ryhas's suggestion and try to build a disappearing invisible wall. We'll see.
Thanks for the heads up on the speech bubble before the car. I'll fix it.
Corner editing like crazy tomorrow.

edit: Just finished a pretty big update. Corners look better, some camera angles are changed, first jump to saucer should be much less frustrating, and threw in an extra baddy on top of Burger Planet. My thermometer reeeally didn't like that last one, but she's still holding together. And they both make a satisfying "pleeeh" sound when they die.

Thanks again!

That was great! A true tribute to the B-Movies out there. Saucer strings, bizarre ways to destroy the aliens (a bit like Mars Attacks! ) and, of course, cheesy speech. Really enjoyed it.

Hey, everybody! Sorry for the double post, but I just finished a pretty big update!

I gave it its own icon sticker, for one thing. It's a little washed out, but I think I managed to get that old movie poster feel out of it.

More corner editing, of course. Finally fixed those pesky connecting spots for the stairs, and a needle sticking out of the tower that had been bugging me.

Added a couple more magic mouths. Nothing that will detract from the momentum, I hope, but there were a couple spots where I thought someone should say something. Hope you like it.

Also, I added more score bubbles. Some of them might lead to bigger combos (just for Ryhas ) and you'll definitely be able to achieve a new high score. SushiGummy's got me beat, but it's wide open with the new bubbles. Step right up, people!

The last switch before the ending had been bugging me. It just didn't belong. Those who have played might know which one I'm talking about. Anyway, it's gone now and you'll just have to figure out a new way inside: One that fits better with the level and I think is much more cinematic and exciting. (although, I'll admit, no more creative than the first button)

I'm hoping to get started on part 2 today. I'm going to take my time on this one and try to get it right the first time. Be patient with me... It's on its way!

I found this level to be decent but I played it before you updated it so maybe I should say some things you should fix. First up is the pile of crashed cars since you either need to glue them together or glue them with dark matter. The other is the grabbable switch that drops the stairs and it's a great idea, but the stairs need to be a bit larger. Not sure what else you should fix because you updated it. The story is pretty good and the black and white scenery gives this level a old sci-fi movie feeling but the gameplay and the visuals are decent. Overall it's a fun level but needs work. 3 stars but I tagged it "Mechanical" for good use of some gameplay mechanics.

I'm glad you liked the concept of the level, even if my mechanics need work. Believe me, I'm working on it.

Good idea about gluing the cars. I'll give it a shot.

I know the stairs aren't perfect... Making them bigger would have been good, but I don't know if I can do it at this point without having to tear them apart too much.

I'm curious to know what else you think needs fixing. Your suggestions so far are valid. Pretty much all of the changes are in the update, so if you don't see yours, I haven't thought of it yet.

Thanks for the honesty, and I'll be sure to check yours out!

edit: I went in to make the cars a little more stable... proved harder than I thought it would be, but I got it done. Also, I WAS able to make the stairs bigger, thanks to my new best friend, the Corner Editor. It makes a world of difference. Thanks for the input!

Well, I have come to this level pretty late in the day and I see that you've had a lot of useful feedback already and fixed some problems. All this means I have the easy job of just breezing in and telling you what a blast I had playing it today.

The alien B movie concept for the level was a cool idea and you pulled it off really well. I loved the humour, the design and the way the level was packed with fun ideas. Highlights for me were:

the TV at the start
your news reporter - great character! the other Sacks were fun too like Sally and the poor guy who got squished, lol!
the flying saucers
the explosions
the milk gun idea
running over aliens who made very satisfying death noises
the folding staircase
secret bubble stashes

The level was simply a lot of fun to play and showed bags of imagination and creativity. I can't wait to see what you do with Part 2.

Wow, Shropshirelass! Thanks for the wonderful comment! I'm glad to see that all the fixes are paying off!

A lot of the things you mentioned in the level are things that I really wasn't sure I could pull off, and I'm pretty sure most of you would run screaming if you saw my logic, but I've been pretty happy with the end result.

Part 2 is off and rolling. I've got a crazy idea or two that just might take some of the things people seem to like about the first level to the next... well, level. LOL

I'm going to concentrate on that for as long as I can tonight. Tomorrow's a school day for the boy, and I'm off work, so I should be able to get to my F4F's no problem!

Can't wait to play everybody's stuff!

Finally I the servers are back up so I can play this. Thanks for playing The Mystery of Mystery Island!!

Now, I really liked the ideas and themes behind the level. You captured that old martian movie vibe really well, with the Ace reporter, sound effects, UFO on strings, etc etc. Really well done in that regard. I think the level is pretty great, so Ill mainly just focus on suggestions:

-the boxes in the super market could perhaps ave an impact noise, like something inside is rattling/breaking.
-there are a couple of visble bolts and emitters and stuff that are visbile, some of which would look better invisble.
-Im not sure exactly what it is, but a lot of the level seems rough around the edges. A lot of places could do with some corner edits to clean up some areas.
-The camera seems really shake at some points, like it cant decide whether it should be zoomed in or out, esp. during cut scene moments.
-I'd maybe tone down the brightness, just to see what it looked like, see if it makes it look less "rough", My TVs set pretty dark, and it looked like things were a bit washed out from brightness.
-You have awesome sound effects but they get lost under the music. Perhaps make the music a bit quieter, more ambient. I dont think the music really matched the theme, but you did great with what we have.

I loved the news broadcast at the start! And the milk killing them and developing the milk gun was great, really true to the martian movie theme!!

A lot of my suggestions arent big issues, and overall I think the level was pretty great and unique!

Cool, thanks Joburg! I'm hoping to play Mystery Island again today, since it looks like you made some changes.

Glad you liked the overall theme and had fun playing the level.

The boxes in the supermarket actually have a handmade label on them. They're supposed to be boxes of soap. Not sure if I can find a sound that's quite right for that particular kind of thumping rattle, but it's a great suggestion! I'll keep my ear out for that perfect sound!

Most of the bolts that are still visible at this point are that way on purpose. Whether or not that's a great idea, I don't know... but in a B-Movie, it's pretty typical to see how things work, and when I took them away some stuff just looked a little too smooth. I do think I'll probably lose the emitters on the ships though. Seems to be a consensus.

Speaking of smooth, I've pretty much done what I can with the corner editor. The remaining shapes are either too big or too complicated. Trying to do better on the first go for pt. 2.

Hmm.. First comment I've had on the camera angles. I like them. I'll check it out with a fresh eye today though and see if anything sticks out.

On the brightness, I've found that my TV seems to be darker than others. I have trouble in dark levels, so I figured it was just a matter of time before mine was too bright. I tried lots of different settings, and the brightness you see is the best I could find on my tv for the monochrome, to my eyes.

I wish I were more thrilled with the music too. Same song I used a lot in Uncle Spooky, and I really didn't want to repeat myself, but the theremin was a must, and that was the only song with it. I did try to switch it up here and there to make it more exciting, but that was hard to do without losing the old school vibe.

Thanks for the love on the news broadcast, and the milk gun! Glad you had fun!

I noticed the custom labels on the soap. They were pretty awesome, you did well to get that level of detail so small. Its the same product as in the ad at the start, right? Im not sure what sound you could put on it, but it just seems like there should be one (its easy for me to say when I dont actually have to go through and put the sounds in myself ).

As with my concerns with visible bolts an emitters, id definately hide the emitters and leave the bolts (like you said, it makes it look like a cheesy set.) but there are places where Id add a coupl of more bolts to make it look like its on purpose. For example, the shelf with the milk, only has one and looks a bit strange as its on the left only, if you get what I mean, If you add another to the other side so it looks like its securely bolted up.

To be honest, the camera thing wasnt too much of a problem, so dont worry about it too much if at all.

I know what you mean about corner edits on complex shapes, starts to become a real pain in the ***. And as for the brightness, my game had the gamma turned way up (was working on soem fine detail bits, and had forgotten to turn it back down So completely disregard that, Ill play it again now that Ive fixed that.

As for the music, like I said, you've done the best with what you have, Id just make it a little quieter so you can hear the awesome sound effects, but thats completely subjective, someone else might prefer it the way it is.

Ive only had a chance to make a couple of changes to The Mystery of Mystery Island. Mostly fixing things that occasionally screw up. I havent had a chance to make some of the larger scale updates that I have in mind, so you probably wont notice any changes as of yet. I wanna make some bigger changes tomorrow if I get time. But Ill probably end up working on a new level Im working on This idea (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=33499-Enter-the-Diorama!), I was thinking of using a Rosewell theme for one of them if thats cool with you. Im not going to steal any of your ideas, youve just inspired me to do the UFOs if you get what I mean

Yup! SoftSack Soap: The Any-Level Detergent is the product on the top shelf! I wish you could win a prize for noticing that!

I played through this morning and noticed the very bolt you were talking about on the milk shelf for the first time. That one shouldn't be showing.

Feel free to be inspired man! The startling void where UFO levels should be must be filled! LOL

Overall I'd say this is a pretty solidly built level. I liked the old school sci-fi movie vibe and the action oriented gameplay with platforming and shooting parts. Also I really liked how stuff collapsed in the level as you went/swung past it. It felt like aliens were invading and blowing stuff up.

The things i felt could be improved are the amount of and length of speech bubbles. Maybe it's a matter of personal preference but when I see a lot of them in a level I tend to just press the circle button a lot and skip them. Also it felt like you were going for a more realistic style of building in your level. I'd suggest building things a little smaller and with more details(check out faith_rip's levels to see what I mean as he seems to be the master at that).

My biggest complaint is the placement of score bubbles. It just felt really haphazard to me and since i like to try go for the high score in most levels I play I was basically saving them up and then comboing at the spots were there were tons.

Wow, Icey! High praise coming from a creator of your caliber! Glad you liked it so much!

Mofo, thanks for the love on the overall feel, and especially the collapsing parts!

I hear you on the lack of detail. I thought I did pretty well in the indoor locations, but having played yours and some others out there, I know there's much much further it can be taken. I don't know if I'll ever be that good.

The speech thing is definitely a matter of taste, and I'm sorry it's not your bag. There's a real cute and funny story there though, if you give it a chance.

Score bubbles... I tried placing some of them for combos, but you're right. Most of them are in pretty random locations. Lots of secret stashes of them, though. Hope you found some of those!

Thanks for the great feedback, ya'll!

Hello! I played this level just an hour ago. I'm now on being honest. Not offensive. Since you have had so many good comments I have decided to give you feedback about all negative things. At the beginning if you jump on the TV and move left next to the wall you can see background at the other side of wall. It wasn't nice but it didn't lower the stars I gave to this level. Unlike these:
-Bad shapes. You didn't seem to be using corner editor OR grid.
-Boring enemies. They were all the same and repetetive.
-One thing I thaught was good would have been that you didn't use community/MM objects. But you did.
-The characters were boring as well. They weren't even very much funny.
-Plain visuals at the beginning. You should have put concepts on the wall.
Those are the WORST things. The one thing I liked the MOST was definetly the scene where you are showed the TV screen.
I gave level 3 stars. I don't want you to think I have something against you. Level had other good things as well but since the most people have already posted every single one of them I thaught it would seem invain.

LOL, I don't think you have anything against me. No worries.

Most of your critiques are fair, but I do feel the need to defend myself on a few of them.

Bad shapes: I know. It's meant to look a little rough around the edges. It's a B-Movie. By the time I was done, it needed a lot of smoothing out, but all the remaining shapes are pretty much locked into position.

Boring enemies: Again, B-Movie. The Sack Men From Space are just that. Sorry you didn't dig it.

Community/MM Objects: Only MM objects I used were cars. If they weren't MM, they would have been community. I personally don't believe in faulting folks for using the resources available when there's something they need for their level that goes beyond their skills, as long as they put them to good use. I don't do vehicles or creatures all that well. Yet. No apologies for that.

Sorry you didn't dig the humor. I tried to keep it subtle. I was really glad even a few people got it.

Concepts on the wall? What do you mean? I tried putting a couple of pictures on the wall, but I thought it made the appt look too busy.

Giving the good with the bad is never in vain, dude. Again, I'm not mad at you, and some of what you said was constructive, and I'm taking all of that good stuff in for pt. 2!

Much as I'd like to believe that, this level isn't up to par with the ones being Spotlighted. I'm very proud of it, no doubt, but I would have fallen out of my seat if it'd been given full coverage. I am trying to up my game considerably for the sequel, though, so fingers crossed!

Thanks for the gratz, and for wanting to play the level. I hope I get to find out what you think!

Ok, LBP was down yesterday so I could not find your PSN to test your level...but suddenly after forever my level scoreboard updated and you score appeared so I uesed that link instead.
Storyline. Very good. Great humor. The level its self is a good size...not too short. The use of the camera for the TV was great. Characters were given a personality and a flow. Aliens were fun, loved the lasers. The pull down fire escapes were cool. The black and white worked really well...
...but that leads me into what made it hard at times. Due to the black and white paths seemed somewhat more hidden. I walked into the apt next door and was stuck for a few. Not sure how to fix that on B&W, maybe use more contrasted colors, less material with backround noise? Not a clue here.
I saw several rough edges on items, using the edge tool will earn you points on your thermo, just a pet peeve of mine because I always run out of space and remove every edge and corner that is hidden to max out the level. You have tons of check points with infinate lives, you may want to have them there, but it takes away from the challange of the level at times. I also was not sure if I missed something at the end...(spoiler) I never saw the people I thought I was saving...or enjoyed the sweet taste of milk victory.

Hey, Celsus, thanks for playing.

I know about the rough edges. I kind of painted myself into a corner, since most of the shapes are now too big and complex to do any more corner editing than I've done.

You didn't miss anything at the end, except maybe the magic mouth that tells you you'll have to wait til pt. 2 to see the whole inside of the ship and rescue your fellow townsacks. It's well under way.

Thanks for the props on the story and characters. From one storyteller to another, that means a lot!

Hey, Dark-Match, so glad you played and liked it!

Very interesting that your Sacky channeled Brad when reading his dialogue, since the radio tower at the end is inspired by the one at the end of Rocky Horror! Very awesome!

I can't wait for part 2, either! It's well under way, but it's taking everything I have not to do a rush job on it. I want to improve the story, humor, look, and gameplay without sacrificing that B-movie feel! Wish me luck...!

Still wondering (Spoiler)...did I miss saving them out of the UFO at the end, or is it a to be continued ending...if it was you could have a drop-down at the end of text "The End" and then "?" a few seconds after. That may take up a bit too much thermo though, and I think you said it was pretty maxed.2010-08-29 10:29:00

There's a magic mouth just inside the ship that thanks you for playing and tells you "to be continued". Problem is, the hatch tilts the ship when it opens, and sometimes slides the player to the exit before they have a chance to read. Haven't come up with an acceptable fix for that, yet. But part 2 will be ready in a few weeks, and it'll be a moot point, cause there will be a key. 2010-08-29 14:17:00

Pretty neat level. I wasn't a fan of the black and white visuals, it made it feel kind of...lifeless. The visuals were great in some areas, and lacking in others. I loved the characters and the dialogue, good job on that. The gameplay was also pretty fun, a little repetive in the beginning with the whole stair things, but I really loved the UFO battle(s). I quite enjoyed this level,
Not the most technically amazing level, as it follows a pretty standard platforming format.
But the Black & White visuals, coupled with the incredibly cheesy dialogue (& UFO's on Strings) gives the 1950's B-Movie Sci-fi feel that was intended.
Lots of character and charm to the level.

Hey, thanks so much for you really kind words on my 50s sci-fi tribute level. When I saw your level in the spotlight, I really had a moment because I'd been working my tail off on mine, and . . . well you know. I debated playing it before I was finished with mine, but curiosity won out. All I can say is that I'm glad I did play it for a lot of reasons. First of all because I then realized that we had taken very different approaches and secondly because it was just a lot of fun.

On the plus side. The cheese really shines in this level. That's a huge compliment because it's hard to be intentionally cheesy. You managed to pull this off in the dialogue and visuals quite well. The back view of the t.v. set was excellent! I got a big chuckle from the reporter too. The black and white visuals was a major risk for you, and I think it works extremely well. Many young people today fail to appreciate black and white film, but I do think that's one of the special features of these films. I'm glad to see you do it justice in this way. Making the milk gun work in the story was also a plus. Many of the old sci-fi stories involve common Earth substances as the weapon or deterrent to the alien invaders, so this was pretty smart. I also thought the pull-down stairs from the fire escape was pretty cool.

On the minus side: I had a bit of a tough time getting up to the shelf with the milk because of the loose stuff. I know what you were trying to do, but I wasn't sure I could go on without having to restart. I made it, but it was touch and go for a while.
Also, I think you could have a better doorway system in the beginning.

Other than those minor things, I really liked this level a lot. Good luck to you.

First of all, let me say that I loved this level! It never ceases to amaze me how many different styles of game LBP can create, and you really captured a fun, humorous atmosphere.

-With the TV scene at the start, it would have been awesome if you covered up the sides of the tv so you couldn't see the saucers flying behind. This distracted me from an otherwise fantastic little cut scene!
-I got a bit confused after speaking to sally as to where to go. I got lost in her apartment for ages before I realised I was supposed to walk in front of her building! (But that could just be me being blind lol) I liked the effect with the doors though, and you've made good use of the grab sponges throughout the level.
-Generally, the character interaction was spot on. I really felt attached to the characters, you really got the sense that your sackboy really has some kind of relationship with them. That's subtle but never easy to pull off!
-Loved the guy getting KO'd by the fighter plane, nice touch :-D Also, Bart and Arnie?? LOL!
-Was great ascending the radio tower, I haven't seen that kind of old school gaming suspense like this in LBP before! In general pulling down the fire escapes was a good touch too. I wasn't quite sure how to get on to the saucer at the end, thought I had to grab the spinning thing at the top and fling onto it, but again this is probably user error
-Not much else to comment on. Five Star Level, and I look forward to checking out some of your others!!

Hey, man, I'm really glad you took the time to play and comment! Even gladder you enjoyed it so much.

The TV at the beginning... My TV cuts off the sides of things. I honestly had no idea those sides were visible until I saw nowblink's video of it. I meant to get in there and fix it, but I guess it slipped my mind. I'll try and remember.

Sorry Sally's door confused you. My wife is my beta tester and she ran right in there the first time too. That's why there are score bubbles inside and a way out. I might make an exit sign or something with an arrow in the hallway pointing away from the room and toward the elevator, if it continues to be a problem for folks.

Glad you liked the characters so much. They turned out to be my favorite part of the level too, and they're taking on a slightly bigger role in part 2 as it takes shape. So more fun with them to come! Also, I was beginning to wonder if anyone would ever catch Bart and Arnie!

The radio tower: I wanted a nice old school finish. Glad you enjoyed it! There are two ways to get on the flying saucer. Originally you were supposed to fling yourself from the spinning top, but my wife noticed that the jump could be made from the platform. I decided to leave it that way. I've thought about some sort of bonus for using the spinning top, but nothing has come to mind for it. Anyway, you're good either way you go.

Thanks for the stars and for a great review! I'll try and get in there soon to fix that TV...

Finally got around to playing this Very nice.

The black and white effect lends a lot to a sort of 50s Alien invasion sort of atmosphere, and a lot of the environment was very well thought out. I loved how when buildings collapsed they fell back into new platforming structures, that seemed well choreographed.

Very nice take on milk being the secret weapon of the paintgun, worked well and the enemies were cute. Also liked the subtle pop culture references here and there.

Great little details here and there, like the glare from the TV. Brilliant.

Few criticisms: A lot of the level art felt flat, consider round edged materials / gradients etc. to give things at least a little depth to them. I got a little confused in the beginning with the 2 doors but I might just be slow

Overall, Great job

Wow! Thanks!

I do struggle with the visuals. Not my strongest point.

The collapse of the construction site was first luck, then platforming. Once I saw how nicely they fell, I created a way through rather than the original plan of going over them. For the better part of it's publication to date, they fell a little wrong because of an alteration I had made just prior to publishing. Every once in awhile I'd go back in and tinker with it trying to get it to fall just perfectly again. Finally I did, and that was probably my most recent re-publishing a few weeks ago. So there you go. I'm glad you caught it after the fix!

Glad you liked the level, man. I was honestly nervous to get your critique!
