Realistic, or just plain fun?

Archive: 18 posts

Hey guys, it's me again. Well, with LBP2 coming out and what not I've been trying to get at least one level out, but the problem is, I can't decide between making a simple, fun platformer (like a jackofcourse-esque level), or a realistic level filled with explosions. There's both advantages and disadvantages to both of them, but what do you guys think I should do?

I've mentioned before that I started building a stage when LBP launched, I published it and have been rebuilding it ever since. The reason is that I want as much realism as possible. It's really hard to build things to Sackboy's size, I realized this when building chairs, toilets, vehicles, drinking fountains, wet floor signs, doors, etc. etc. So there are some major problems you could run into with realism. That being said, both really do have pros and cons, but it all comes down to whether or not it's fun to play.2010-08-12 02:00:00

Idk but me i like making levels based off other things, as i have 3 toy story themed levels and a level based of Assassin's Creed and halo ODST. Its all preference really, whatever is fun to create for you is what you should create, any themed level can be good if the creator makes it good 2010-08-15 02:56:00

every attempt to make something realistic makes the thermo BLOW UP THE ENTIRE PS3 in my case... so simple platformer would be more realistic to exist in my moon... i hate the thermo! i add one room and it takes up one block! no new materials, no stickers added yet, nothing and yet it keeps growing!!!!! it's HUNTED!!! it's after me!!! I think/ hope most people understand how hard it is to make a realistic looking level, and how fast it can make the thermometer overload. I really don't see any harm in making multiple chapters to your stage. Since stages can be linked in LBP2, this seems like the way to go rather than trying to fit everything in one stage. I've got separate stages on my moon dedicated to items, vehicles, people, costumes, and creatures and some of those are on the verge of overheating without even being implemented into a stage or multiplied.

I always prefer realism in stages, but when you're building one you have to know that you probably won't fit your entire concept within the limitations of a single thermometer.

By "realistic" do you mean...
Sackboy is smaller than a PS3 controller (like many kitchen levels)
OR
sackboy is meant to play like the size of a human?

I guess I can appreciate realism but a simple platformer with good mechanics and nice visuals is much more likely to keep me coming back again and again. Realism can't really happen in this format anyway, IMO, the best looking levels embrace a stylized sort of approach. Not necessarily abstract but yeah, like jackofcourse.2010-08-15 15:17:00

I mean sackboy is meant to play like the size of a human.

It would be intersting to see your real life house in a sackboy sized level!2010-08-15 17:23:00

I like the way realistic levels look, but usually enjoy how "fun" levels play. If I'm making a realistic level, I try to avoid making the insides of buildings and houses. It eats thermo and, unless you are very experienced, will sometimes look sloppy. Not in all cases, but many times I've seen houses done terribly, mine included. If your level's setting is mainly outdoors, I'd go with realistic. It all comes down to what you like to create though...2010-08-15 20:15:00

Fun platformer for sure!
An realistic level is hard to make and if you don't make it right it can look weird and it can take some thermo. A fun platformer is always nice to play with your friends and they are easier to make. And if you choose to make a fun platformer remember to make it fun and not frustrating
Even though, I like both realistic levels and platformers

Good luck

I just built vending machines, soda cans, and a mop and bucket. It took me 2 hours... So yes it's time consuming, and it eats up the thermometer, but now I have 4 totally sweet vending machines and a way to clean up! 2010-08-15 20:55:00

Realistic games are never fun
Imagine LBP realistic. Just ragdolls sitting there.

I like a mix.
While the stylized levels look and play nice, they don't often have a story for motivation. Even a simple premise (like in Rohars Run level, or the genie in LockStitch's level) is better than none at all. I can't think of a decent game I have played without characters. The exception being retro puzzles like tetris when they didn't have space for characters.
The levels I try to make combine the best of both worlds, decent story/motivation/setting + fun platforming.
Realistic levels with little gameplay, and stylized levels with little setting/story/chars are less enjoyable than a mix of both imo.

I usually make cartoonish levels (with a lot of stickers, but only one single material) but with quite realistic gameplay (not like platforms flying in the air).2010-08-15 22:22:00
