Magical Musical WorkshopMacnme http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g140/gairns/APhoto_4.jpgPresenting: The Magical Musical Workshop. http://lbp.me/v/s35knd Enter the mind of a music producer, and use the various switches and custom instruments to create your very own mix. http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g140/gairns/APhoto_4.jpg http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g140/gairns/APhoto_3-1.jpg http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g140/gairns/APhoto_2-1.jpg http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g140/gairns/APhoto_1-2.jpg http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g140/gairns/APhoto-1.jpg The product of a 48 hour creativity binge. A drum and bass sequencer with custom instruments and isolated solo's. Activate any bass note or any drum sound on any part of the 4 beat sequence. Control the tempo and then improvise on the various custom made instruments. All tuned to pentatonic C Words can't really describe this level. You're just going to have to play it. The finger in the ear in that pic has definitely got my attention, I'm surprised no one has responded to this thread yet. | 2010-08-10 22:56:00 Author: Jagrevi Posts: 1154 |
I'm surprised no one has responded to this thread yet. You & Me both Please tell me what you think of it, I'm not sure how intuitive the controls are for the music sequencer... obviously I understand it because I built it & I tried to make it as clear as possible... but it's a complicated beast. | 2010-08-10 23:02:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
You already got my opinion!! | 2010-08-10 23:09:00 Author: psman012 Posts: 106 |
I have this level on my list to try tomorrow for sure. Love music, and I must give you props for tuning (although it wouldn't be very good if it wasn't, I'm sure). The pictures alone can account for how much work it must have taken with all those numerous wires spanning left and right. I'll be more than glad to share some thoughts when I actually get to it, but I'm already excited. | 2010-08-11 04:46:00 Author: Unknown User |
There were so many wires on screen that it couldn't actually display them all at once, they would only pop-in once you zoomed in very close | 2010-08-11 06:54:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
You already got my opinion!! "Very Cool" - Thanks very much. That's two "Very Cool"'s on the comments page Midnight_heist also thought it was "Very Cool" - Love the "Animal" muppets costume he uploaded of him playing the drum kit I've always thought they should do a muppets costume pack | 2010-08-11 08:15:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
Oh i played this level! You sent me a message on PSN to play it! I thought it was fantastic! Music is my second favorite thing in the world (Besides food of course) And this levels shows of music as i would hope it would. Overall 9.5/10 only because it was too short. More music = better the level Imo. | 2010-08-11 09:58:00 Author: Rasumii Posts: 63 |
It is indeed very cool. The level is easy to use, and has some cool visuals. The solos were an unqiue touch, my fav part, an awesome feature. | 2010-08-11 10:28:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |
I was originally intending on being able to choose between major or minor keys - and even selecting what key to play in. But the logic maxed out pretty quickly. I think I need to consult a logic genius on how to maximise the efficiency of the logic for the sequencer. There's already so many ways I could improve upon this idea... reset button, mute buttons, even volume controls.... but will need to be done as an entirely seperate/new level - as most of the logic is in-built into the sequncer... and due to the amount of wiring causing pop-outs, it's difficult to tell what's connected to where any-more. | 2010-08-11 10:29:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
Out of lazyness I didn't look this up yesterday but I just checked five pages for it after I didn't see it. I want to check it out. | 2010-08-11 11:01:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
Out of lazyness I didn't look this up yesterday but I just checked five pages for it after I didn't see it. I want to check it out. Not sure what you mean by this. You checked 5 pages and didn't find it? I haven't seen what the search results are for "Magical Musical Workshop"; Do I need to name it something more specific to make it easier to find? | 2010-08-11 11:36:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |

I absolutely love the photo's you guys have uploaded onto this level. Your's especially BasketSnake; It looks like a cheesy 80's album You know, you can play this level like an instrument. So far I've had Reggea beats, Salsa, Trance, Flat Rock... it all depends on how you configure the buttons. And if you choose a different bass note as the root note (note 1) - it gives a different flavour to the mix each time. I've noticed with people that I've played the level with have a tendancy to just put themselves onto the back layer and press every button at once.... this isn't a very good idea.... it just creates a cacophony, although because each sound object only activates again after the sound has finished it still sounds ok if you turn the tempo right down. Less is more when it comes to music - you should only really be activating one or two, maybe three buttons on each sound object in the 4 beat sequence, with the exception of the hi-hat and ride cymbol. I really should create a mouth object tutorial - but I wanted to do the whole thing wordlessly so that it was purely about the music. And the tutorial would need to be quite long... especially if you're trying to explain these concepts to a non-musician. Do you guys think it *needs* a tutorial? How did you guys configure the buttons... did you deliberately select which beat to activate, or just press them all randomly? @ Sabre; Feed back in your thread | 2010-08-11 18:56:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
Just finished playing the level, and I must say I am amazed at how precise the level is. The system runs very smooth for the most part. I did experience a slight bit of lag once I was there for a while, but I'm fairly certain that was on my side of the server. Each beat is perfectly lined up and there doesn't appear to be a pause in-between measures. Some things I did want to point out: The grab material on the bow broke off very easily for me, and I wasn't entirely certain on how to activate the strings either. If you do add magic mouths to the level, that may be one place to give a quick explanation. (Then again, it could have just been me.) I had a little bit of trouble hitting a central button on the beats without activating two beats at once. Again, may have just been me. Sometimes as I would add in extra parts, some patterns I had other instruments playing would quit. For example, I had the Bass A playing as follows: (Using ^ to represent and, R to represent a Rest, A/D to represent Notes.) 1 ^ 2 ^ 3 ^ 4 ^ R R A A R R R R Then I added a Bass D as so: (Using ^ to represent and, R to represent a Rest, A/D to represent Notes.) 1 ^ 2 ^ 3 ^ 4 ^ R R A A R D R R Without having touched the A, the pattern being played changed to this: (Using ^ to represent and, R to represent a Rest, A/D to represent Notes.) 1 ^ 2 ^ 3 ^ 4 ^ R R A R R D R R Not sure what caused it, but may be worth playing a few rhythms through like that and checking the logic to see what might cause it. Overall, this level gets :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3 from me. Way to go, I'm sure I'll be looking back at this level soon. Don't have to F4F for me, just wanted to share my opinion of the level with you. It really is amazing. | 2010-08-11 21:17:00 Author: Unknown User |
That's some quality feedback. Very usefull, thank you. I will test out the patterns and see what I can do | 2010-08-11 21:42:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
-Added a checkpoint at the Keyboard @ Ironmalley; I'm not entirely certain what's causing the note to drop out - they are activated from different sound objects so shouldn't interfere with each other... what I noticed is if you turn the tempo down it starts activating the note again... so it seems to be related to the speed of the sequence, but I'm stumped if I can figure out why?! - I've tried to be as methodical as I can. I think this might require a total logic overhaul to fix, or at least someone who is better at logic than I to skim over my work and tell me where it's going wrong. But I'm planning a follow up level, with more controls like Reset, Mute, Volume & Pan. Hopefully I will be able to figure out an even more reliable way to keep perfect sequence of the notes. | 2010-08-12 08:22:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
I remember playing this with you like yesterday? The concept is great and the amount of detail is amazing. This is a great level! | 2010-08-12 15:45:00 Author: dragonember Posts: 607 |
I remember playing this with you like yesterday? The concept is great and the amount of detail is amazing. This is a great level! Glad you like it yeah, it's not really a 'level' as such... it is more of a design concept. I wanted to see if it was possible to build a decent "make your own music" level. I had to scale the design back a bit, due to thermo issues... But I've got some good ideas how this level could be re-done even better, with even more musical options. *watch this space* | 2010-08-13 09:29:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
That sounds really fun, its very much on my list to play. Will give feedback as soon as possible | 2010-08-13 13:54:00 Author: Malhat06 Posts: 107 |
One tip I would give to anyone playing this level; It's a music based level so, Turn the sound up LOUD on your TV. If it's too loud, you're too old | 2010-08-13 13:59:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
That comment alone wants me to play it loud im not old... | 2010-08-13 14:00:00 Author: Malhat06 Posts: 107 |
You're never too old to rock & roll! | 2010-08-13 14:02:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
Played this today and it was really fun. I loved the mixing desk type area and some really funky beats going! My wife enjoyed it as well, even though she mainly made a racket The only thing that I would possibly change would be the producers head bit at the beggining.. really not sure this is needed... and maybe a reset button (not sure if there is already one, if so, i couldn't find it) so that I don't have to run through the head everytime I want to change the music im making.. Overall I give it 5 Stars and a Heart for cleverness and playability! Really well done | 2010-08-15 16:36:00 Author: Malhat06 Posts: 107 |
I'm going to try this as soon as i can it look so complex, must be awesome. | 2010-08-15 18:03:00 Author: Pattington_Bear Posts: 777 |
@Malhat; Glad you enjoyed it. Sadly there is no reset button - I'm working to build that into my next (follow-up) music level as it'll need to be worked into the logic from the start. & funnily enough, I added the "inside the Head" aesthetic because I thought a music mixer by itself would cut it as "interesting" - wanted to show off my artistic abilty as well as my music abilty | 2010-08-16 08:13:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
Oh its very pretty and everything, it was more that I wanted to get to the mixer quickly haha | 2010-08-16 10:08:00 Author: Malhat06 Posts: 107 |
Well, I guess I could add a sticker triggered teleporter at the start of the level. In fact that sounds like a good idea. May work on that tonight | 2010-08-16 10:19:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
Wow, I am so absolutely stoked! I was over at littlebignetwork (don't be jealous LBPC) - touting my wares. And recieved this AWESOME review from EnochRoot (http://www.littlebignetwork.com/showthread.php/7927-Macnme-s-Magical-Musical-Workshop) - site founder, Super Mod and God Sack of littlebignetwork!!!: "Fancied playing something different so tried this level today and was extremely glad I did. A unique innovative idea and fun. Loved the entry through the waxy ears of the music producer and his brain. Then when I arrived at the main play area I was delighted to find so many different and interacive ways to create musical mayhem! Lots of reward in exploring what different grabs and instruments produce, also a neat little guitar battle. Wonderful to discover a different type of musical level, sure there are some brilliant ride along tune type levels but they don't really engage as this does. This is definitely one of the most interesting musical levels out there, hearted alongside my two other favourite music levels Ultimate music producer @pinchanzee and silent hill @ M_R_Enigma. " Now *that* is praise indeed!!! It totally made my day! | 2010-08-16 19:41:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
Radical music level. The usage of the instruments are brilliant and that really creates the music. The only problem is the beginning. There's too many cells in the brain for me to catch the visuals and I thought the first speaker leads to an dead end until I walked through it. Overall it's a great music level and that deserves 5 stars. Play and F4F "The Hero Chronicles LV6 Sky Metropolis". | 2010-08-17 01:52:00 Author: JustinArt Posts: 1314 |
Thanks. I have noticed a few people seem to get stuck for a bit when faced with that speaker, I may just remove it entirely. Unfortunately, the thermo is at it's absolute max and won't allow me to add the sticker activated teleporter at the start. But I'm working to try and reduce the overall thermo somewhat. | 2010-08-17 08:23:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
hey man that was brilliant so clever!!! looks great, works perfectly with an original idea. i reckon u could make an adventure level out of this theme inside his mind with musical puzzles and obstacles. jus a suggestion cos i loved the begining going through the guys head haha x | 2010-08-24 09:06:00 Author: Bombw87 Posts: 126 |
Thanks Bombw87. Feedback is always appreciated | 2010-08-25 14:49:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
Ah, I still haven't checked this out. Been meaning to. Will today. edit: Nothing you haven't already heard, but it's brilliant, man. It's short, so I won't do a breakdown, but from the finger to the inside of the head to the actual music maker, I was jumping around having a blast! I did have a decent tune going for awhile, but I jumped on a bad note and botched the whole thing... LOL I wasn't expecting to make good music. I have no talent with these types of projects. I did expect to play a fun level, and that's exactly what this is. Fun and brilliant! F4F: You can play Invasion of the Sack Men From Space! if you want, but I've already had lots of great feedback and I didn't give you much constructive here, so feedback is optional. But always appreciated. | 2010-08-27 12:51:00 Author: SpeedyMcKnuckles Posts: 331 |
