MPEG4 Compressor?

Archive: 4 posts

Well It's a bit of a long shot but no harm in asking right?

As the title says does anyone know of any good MPEG4 compressors? one that doesn't leave a water mark or an icon and is free. That's it really.

I like this one (http://handbrake.fr/). It's a little on the complicated side, but once you get it figured out, the video quality is really good.2010-08-09 10:20:00

I just took for a quick spin, and it worked really well. The new file size is now only 72% of the original, with barely any visual difference at all. I'm sure once I learn how to use it a bit more I could get that even lower.2010-08-09 13:46:00

I like this one (http://handbrake.fr/). It's a little on the complicated side, but once you get it figured out, the video quality is really good.

That's the same one I use. It's really just a frontend for a number of codecs, including the x264 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X264) video compression codec, which is about the best you can get these days.

If you enable all the advanced H264 settings, you can usually get away with a video bitrate of 1Mbps* with very little quality loss.

FWIW, I use the following settings...

HandBrakeCLI -v -t 1 -f mp4 -O -e x264 -b 1000 -p -E faac -B 160 -R 48 -D 1 -2 -T
-x level=41:ref=6:mixed-refs=1:bframes=16:b-pyramid=1:no-fast-pskip=1:weightb=1:me=umh:subme=9:trellis=1artiti ons=all:direct=auto -i input.mpg -o output.mp4

...which transcodes MPEG2 PS/TS to MPEG4 H264/AAC in realtime on my quad-core Phenom box. The resulting output file is also compatible with the PS3.

* Assuming your source video is of standard definition size (i.e. either 480i for NTSC or 576i for PAL). The bitrate (-b setting) will have to be adjusted for higher or lower quality sources.
