Caves and stuff...
Archive: 8 posts
All right, I was just wondering if any of you out there would know anything about caves and such, and how a certain piece of stony oddity would form... xkappax or javi_haguse, you can help me out on this, right? From what I know I am trying to recreate something from head, based on different facts I think I know about caves, stalagmites and stalactites. Alright, so my scenario is that there is a cave (as mentioned in the title) and in this cave there is a big room. At the top of the ceiling there is a big hole where rain can fall freely. How will the floor become because of this? Will there be in the middle something like a pool, because of the erosion made by the rain, while the rain dripping from the edges will create stalagmite-like stuff so it will kind of be like a bath-tub? | 2010-08-07 19:42:00 Author: moonwire Posts: 1627 |
Something like this? http://c2.api.ning.com/files/8kU4WoCCQ3y%2axLOQkV4zwUXfRVMQQYGmiXpoNR8HnNTyyv1n O6sq8inPx7RSNr9ShOn6Gr-TTx8EeowcdnWxfnTN9BB2B4NR/NationalGeographic20074.jpg created like this? http://blogs.ngm.com/.a/6a00e00982269188330120a65782cc970b-500wi Grr 1st link didn't show, sorry. it would form anyway you see fit. As a creator I strive for a sense of realism... but at some point you just gotta throw all the how's and why's out the window. Give 'em cave the likes they've never seen before... that's what I'd do... in fact maybe I will! | 2010-08-09 00:59:00 Author: Gravel Posts: 1308 |
Yeah.. I reckon your idea sounds very plausible. Depending on the size of the hole above, the erosion directly below would either be like Strangepom's model, or would erode into a basin-like pool as all water merged towards the centre, or was not absorbed into the ground quickly enough to avoid pooling. Water could also dribble down the edges of the hole and form stalactites and stalagmites as it dripped, but from what (little) I know of caves, the water has to be very rich in limestone in order to deposit enough sediment per drop. If it's fresh water from the open sky I doubt it would create stalactites/mites near the opening. Moreso further in where it has to work it's way through the limestone. That could be completely wrong of course... | 2010-08-09 01:32:00 Author: BabyDoll1970 Posts: 1567 |
Grr 1st link didn't show, sorry. Seems it didn't like the '*' in the URL - changing to '%2a' seems to fix it. Still can't edit posts for some reason. (reason for double post) Right-click the "Edit Post" link, and "Open in New Tab" should do the trick. | 2010-08-09 05:05:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |
If you think it looks right, it will probably look right. I think "Earth" has an episode about caves, you should check it out. | 2010-08-09 17:47:00 Author: Luos_83 Posts: 2136 |
