Need help making treads for an M1 tank

Archive: 6 posts

I looked at a tutorial and got them working, with 2 layers in the back, and one layer in the front made of metal. I use one rubber wheel in the back with a motor bolt, and one cloth wheel in the front with a bolt, all the smaller wheels are faking it with wobble bolts triggered to spin in the same direction as the main wheel. I have glass in the center of the tread hidden behind the wheels to keep everything moving smoothly.

It works pretty well for the most part, but it breaks occasionally, and it's a bit bouncy and struggles for a moment when changing direction. It's on a simple left to right pattern triggering a magnetic key to be emitted to change direction until the key disappears which sends it back the opposite direction. Any help would be appreciated and I don't mind rebuilding the entire tread system since I just realized that Mm had a really decent looking wheel at the bottom of the collected objects page.

Well I know alot of the creators on here make suspension to go along with the treads, and that apparently how loose or tight the treads are has alot to do with it too, but I haven't found a good balance. I also had the problem of everything shaking violently and then flying apart in all directions, but I fixed that somehow and now occasionally a single tread will break and the tank will just stop moving.
The plus side to this is that it's being built for a boss fight, and I don't need it to be controlled by a player.

So I'm curious. Maybe I'm using the wrong shape for each piece of the treads. Maybe instead of the "pill" shape, a rectangle shape with angles cut out of both sides.
..........................._____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____
Something like this /____//____//____//____//____//____//____//____/
Not sure if I'll be able to make that shape small enough without it distorting, but I think I'll give it a try later.

As always any feedback on this is appreciated.

It's not a very eye pleasing tread design I have to say. If you want a strong and easy to build design though, then this is what I do.

I get a 1x1 small grid space cirle and smear it to make a 2x1 'pill' shape. Made with metal.
I then connect these together with rods set to 0.0 length. The ends of the rods should point up and out on 45* angles.
Lastly I usually use 2 3x3 rubber wheels to turn them.

If want to see pictures of it take a look here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24354-Tank-with-both-tracks-and-independant-suspension.).
