Games being translated

Archive: 8 posts

I am dutch from origin, but I can still remember my first zelda game on the NES.
(NES - Nintendo Entertainment System for all you youngsters).
And I even remember not knowing what the word "Secret" meant.
So i was searching for the "Geheim van het secret"
which translated would mean the secret of the secret. (family members laughed about it on multiple occasions).

And ever since, I like english versions of games over the dutch.
Especially nowadays when the tarded game-companies also add dutch-narrated/translated cut-scenes (think of Kratos speaking dutch, french or even mandarin) and I just really REALLY hate it.

In my humble opinion games should not be translated.
I allready noticed in a lot of rpg's the soul is totally ripped out of the game by the poor english narrative. (Tales of symphonia for instance)
For bigger japanese productions, the translations to english are often decently done..
but For i.e. tales of symphonia and a lot of other games.. they dont even translate everything and the english/dutch gamer ends up with reading because they didnt translate everything from the game.

I am actually thinking of taking up Japanese so I wont be bothered by bad translations, narratives and raping the soul of games by people who do not care about gamers nor their games.

Good example is "Saints Row 2".
In that game you are allowed to smoke a big blunt.
And.. most of us know what a blunt is right?
Well the dutch tarded translators translated it into "bot voorwerp".
Or.. translated back to english.. "Blunt object"
.... thats just retarded.

Same for Heavenly Sword.
The dutch voice for the lead character was from a dutch soap actress called "Katja Schuurmans" now she cant help it.. but i think 99% of dutch gamers hate the soap she is in.
Though those same 99% of gamers would love to go on a date with Katja..
Im sure all of em felt like they where in a a "As the world turns" kind of soap with her voice being used.

so.. for the love of games,
Please.. I beg you.. PLEASE also add the english and japanese translations/narrations to the games so i can finafu**ingly choose the language myself like back in the SNES age.
Because Both XBOX and Sony have games in which you cannot set the language other than your consoles language setting.

I understand what you mean, I'm english and usually play English games and never really play translated games. Probably the only game in my PS3 libary that's translated is Valkyria Chronicles, but you can have the option for Japanese speaking (with text saying what they're saying) But if I could I would try and watch movies/play games in their original language, and read subtitles. But even subtitles make mistakes :/

The only fine example of translating I have seen has been Mother 3, it was never released in EU or US and so it was all in Japanese, then a community got together to translate it ALL. It was a great accomplishment and Mother 3 is a great RPG.

No offence, but most all know U.S. has one of the, if not the worst dubbing industry.
Seems like they only use 4 people for all games and foreign series.
Pretty much any other country has more and better voice actors.

So...yeah, if there's any chance of a foreign game being played in its language with eng subtitles, or dubbed in Castellano (Mexico's Spanish) then I'll do that, because Mexico has some pretty darn good voice acting I'll tell you that much, so if you understand spanish, I reccomend you listen to more in Castellano.
France has pretty decent voice acting too, japan's really good as well, german, its ok, Spanish (from Spain) ironically is another one i really dislike, voices don't fit the characters a lot of times (tho if they do, its pretty darn good. )

So...yeah, give me any other language dub any time, I'll take eng sub over eng dub anytime.

I'm not very savvy on Dutch dubbings, but I think dubbing are very useful for native speakers in some games.

Personally, I don't think French narrations are that bad in Japanese games, but I admit the original Japanese voices are way better, they just fit the visuals/atmosphere more than the dubbing does.

We could also avoid dubbing in games with a regional or historical context. Such as Red Dead Redemption, the GTA series, etc...

However, I believe dubbing is important in games with alot of NPCs. BioshocK, for instance. The Splicers' nonsense screams... All those things and the game's atmosphere feel so strange... It would've been rubbish without a translation.

The Fable series too. NPCs talk a lot and the atmosphere is very imporant methinks.

Dubbings aren't that bad. Even though it's not a game, the Simpsons' dubbing in French is very excellent and I can't imagine this show without it

Make a choice between dubbing and original language with subtitles.

Everyone is happy.
