Before I fully introduce myself, let me just give a thumbs up to the people here at LBPC. I always watch a community from the eyes of a guest for a while to see how things are run and make sure the community I'm joining is well organized and friendly, and I must say this is one of the better online communities I've seen. Props to the staff here, too, as I've helped run a few sites and it truly is a task.

Now to actually get to the reason for posting in this section, introducing myself obviously. I've been playing LBP for a little less than a year now - got my first PS3 along with the GOTY edition last year - and have become fanatically obsessed with the game. My favorite part of the game was, of course, the ability to design and share your own levels with the community.

I have dabbled some with the creation system with reckless abandon and had posted 3 or 4 levels prior to finding this site. I knew my levels weren't up to par with some of the levels that were out there, and was content with that... simply because I just could not comprehend how they made such levels. Then I found this site and began to delve deeper into how to create a good level. I searched up the LBPCentral Logic Pack, looked into some of the creator spotlights, and took on the task of recreating 3 of my first levels. I do intend to share here, still not sure I've tapped my full potential and would love some feedback and suggestions.

A few extra things I would like to share:

One thing I'd like to learn to do in LBP: Create and incorporate custom songs into my levels.

This is one thing I've tried before, not to much luck. I do enjoy music (maybe moreso than LBP), and actually do write for some bands around the area I live. However, I can't wrap my head around how people create music levels, and even more so incorporate these custom arrangements into their levels without overloading the thermo and leaving themselves with a short level.

What I like to create: Short but multi-level story lines.

One thing I'm good with is the storyline for a level, and it usually tends to expand into more than one level. The levels I'm currently redoing are a trilogy, and I am working on other level sets much larger. I usually try to keep my stories original, with a few puns here and there for the sake of humor. Most of my levels take on a serious note though, usually with a motive to escape something or help others escape.

One thing I truly need help with: Finding a balance between scenery and playable areas.

This is one thing I have a major issue with now. Most of my levels are large and underground/indoors, calling for hiding the background area during most of the level and leaving me with little room in my thermo to actually create a playable level. This usually leaves me with really short levels and not many puzzles/obstacles. My lighting can get out of control at times as well, leaving me with the same issue on top of lag. Any help/suggestions on how to do indoor/underground areas without filling the thermo quickly would be of a great help to me.

Welcome! Glad ya made it!

So glad you are fine tuning your creation skills. One of the best ways to get better is to post a level in the Level Showcase and get some feedback. There are also a ton of Tutorials on how to maximize your thermo as well as thoughts towards what makes a good level in the Help forum. However since I am already here...maybe I can help with a few of your topics.

The best way to maximize your therm is use the corner editor rather than drawing with the material. Too many vertices kill the thermo very quickly. I learned that the hard way!! Another is keep your materials down to a smaller pallet. Five to 10 isn't bad. I think I shoot for 5 and then might end up with 8 sometimes. Generally, if you start with a minimum pallet and then add to that once you get towards completion, you can watch how much some materials take up. Sometimes adding another won't make a difference which is great, especially if there is a certain effect your are going for with that one.

..and it is really hard to get a great mix of game play to scenery. Some tend to go more one way or the other.. some find a perfect balance. It really is a hard thing and more depends on your style I think or possibly the particular level in question. It also is sometimes truly the perspective of the player as there really isn't any written rules on the subject. Like the IceMaiden's levels have almost 0 game play, but wow.. you are just memorized by all the scenery. For me, I like to do lots of detail, but also like to have quite a bit of interesting game play and new and different platforming challenges along the way. Is it a good mix? Not sure, but I just enjoy the process.

Good luck and hope you post a level soon!

Have fun!

Thanks for the welcomes everyone, I'm sure I'll enjoy my time spent here, especially after I've settled in and adjusted fully to how this site is laid-out and ran. I'll try not to be too much of a bother if I can, pretty used to vB so I know how everything works.

@jwwphotos, I actually was so eager to share that the next thing I did right after posting was go share the re-creation of my first level. I'm sure I'll post more in due time, but I think I'll wait to see what I learn from my first dive into sharing before I do anything else.

Thanks for the cookie buddy, I am quite fond of them... unless of course, it has nuts in it. I'm not very fond of nuts.

Also thanks to you as well, Night Angel, especially about the grammar. I do have a tendency at times to write sentences - and even whole paragraphs at times - that are so backwards and confusing that even I don't understand them. That's usually on purpose though, I do have a bit of a mischievous side to me at times where I like to confuse people to no end. Other than that many people have actually told me I was very mature for my age. (I won't say how old that is, but I will say I'm just a teenager.) ...oh, and if this is truly the place where dreams come true, then I will be perfectly content here.

I must say I was feeling the new user woes at first, but that's my own impatience showing. I'm truly feeling welcome now, and if I haven't said it enough already then I say thanks for the warm welcome.
