How To: Create Accelerating Motors

Archive: 8 posts

Ever wondered how to create a motor that speeds up with time, like in Tie Skipping? I think ive found how.

In this tutorial i will build a simple windmill type thing, but its the mechanism you need to watch. A Diagram is available to make it a bit simpler. Firstly, there can be no constant acceleration, it can be up to a point, where the speed will even out.

1: Build 2 enclosures in a 'wall' , to house the mechanism.

2: In an enclosure, place a piece of material in the upper section and then place a piston connecting it to the bottom. Set its minimum length to 0, and its speed setting to a large amount. This will be how long the acceleration can take place; I would recommend a speed of 240s, escpecially for something like a minigame. This means it will take 120s to reach the objects maximum speed.

3: Next to the enclosure, place 4 magnetic switches of the same colour on the side, and a key on the moving material connected to the piston. Make sure the switches have an activation area that covers the moving area, and that they are the same, so that as the piston moves down, each switch will be activated.

4: In the other enclosure, place 6 evenly sized squares, all but top and bottom with dissolve able material. Now the interesting part. Hook the 4 squares with their magnetic switches.

5: Place a magnetic switch on the bottom square, and a key on the top one, (make sure these are corresponding in terms of colours)and set the trigger area to the very top square, and the setting to speed.

6: The motor for your contraption should now be in place, and make sure that the speed setting you have set will be the maximum speed you want from it. Now hook the switch from the bottom square to the motor and viola!

NOTE: As an addition you could set a sensor switch to trigger the piston, delaying the process until you reach a certain point.

What about just having a Sensor Switch (range set to cover the whole area)...Then set the Switch option to "Speed change" or "acceleration" or something (I forget). Then connect it to a motor.

Not sure if that works...I think it does?

unfortunately no, you'd think there would be in the game, but there was none in the beta.

Actually, you are incorrect there. I made a Library of Switches (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=3006), one of which accomplished this task. There are limitations though, as the maximum "acceleration time" is 90 seconds. I have an idea for a better design with a longer accel time, but I am keeping that to myself for now. Interesting design you have, although it seems a bit large.

I made an accelerating ring in the beta. It was a magnetic key switch on a piston which very slowly moved away from the motor bolt which caused the bolt to speed up.2008-10-18 09:24:00
