LBP Speed Running?

Archive: 25 posts

I come from a Zelda gaming background, and as you might know, there have been many speed runs (http://speeddemosarchive.com/ZeldaOcarinaOfTime.html) of OOT.

I was wondering if you guys think there might be attempts to speed run popular LittleBigPlanet levels, either in Story mode or user created?

LittleBigPlanet seems to be a very fun game to attempt speedruns, I might try a couple times myself (and fail miserably ), for pure fun!

What do you think? Would speed running ruin the play experience?

I personally think it wouldn't, it just adds a whole new element. :arg:

Yeah, totally. I'll definetly be doing speed runs at some point. I don't necessarily mean "super cereal, recording and uploading to youtube". I'll just try and complete it as fast as I can for bragging rights to friends. ^_^2008-10-16 22:38:00

As in Speed Runs, you mean timed levels, right?2008-10-16 23:34:00

I mean trying to perform levels in the fastest time possible, and keeping records of those times so others try to get faster times. Preferably with videos. :arg:2008-10-16 23:35:00

I don't see how it could, if you don't want to speed run, don't.2008-10-17 00:26:00

Well... shortly finished races = better score. And there's already Hi-Scores...

I don't think we need speed running.

Seems kinda pointless. It's pretty easy to do anyways. It'll be exactly the same the second time you play it so...2008-10-17 01:51:00

I've never found speed runs much fun, I like to take my time and admire what the creators have made, so it's a yes for me.2008-10-17 04:05:00

The thing is...the story mode by itself is fairly short, as the GameSpot review says. Just running through a level you could do pretty promptly, and there wouldn't be that much challenge or variance in it, because that fastest path won't have much different to do. Instead, what about an all-items speedrun? The fastest time you can get through level X or levels X-Xi starting from a clean slate, and then slotting your time only once you've grabbed every item in the level. That adds a lot more strategy and etc. because the more secret and hidden items would require more forethought, and also I believe reaching those areas is more challenging.2008-10-17 05:10:00

This wont ruin the game in general, but for me it will.
I like to take my time to explore, look at everything, and to find every hidden secrets within the levels, but I have no problem with others doing this. But maybe I'll try a speed run when I have gotten every item etc...

Definitely wont ruin it. Will I actually try myself though? Maybe, maybe not, but it adds extra fun for some players and it's not forced on you, so it can't really ruin the game. 2008-10-17 13:46:00

Yeah, I was thinking a 100% speed run, or at least a Story Mode speed run.

It would be neat to see how fast Story Mode can be completed! :arg:

I'm not much of a speed run type person. I did one once on one of the Metroid games for the GBA. That and Castlevania type are the best (I think) for speed running, because it is actually possible to skip sections of the game, but it takes a lot of skill and perceverence to get through it because you don't have the abilities you would actually need.

It's not for me, but I don't think doing it would spoil it for you, since you will need to replay every level at least once to get 100%, so you'd see it all eventually. Personally, I'm taking it slow and enjoying the great scenery MM have made. I'm asthounded at how much details has gone into the levels. So far the Savannah is the one that amazes me the most. (I'm not THAT far yet) but they are all beautiful in their own ways, so I like to take the time to appreciate it.

This would make the game even more playable. I would spend hours trying to get fast times.2008-10-17 16:58:00

I don't think it will ruin gameplay because, the first time you want to speedrun a level means you think you know the level better than others and it challenges to top your best time. Speedrunning adds another element and dimemsion of gameplay and doesn't take any other way the game is played.2008-10-17 17:49:00

i wouldn't mind if people do it, but the whole point is to go slowly ( unless in race mode ) and enjoy the beauty of the level design. The developers worked amazingly hard to omit an amazingly detailed game which they decorated to the last leaf stem. There is no point in rushing through the game. stop, enjoy how beautiful the game is, and try to think of how they could have accomplished this task in the level editor.2008-10-17 19:42:00

Ah dagnit I voted wrong xD I read too fast and now realise the question is not Would it be fun to speed run, but Would it not be fun

Anyway I think it would be fun to challenge ourselves after going through the game at least once at your own pace. If you've already enjoyed the game and want to give yourself a new challenge, why not! I plan on taking my sweat time going through story mode and then I will most likely participate in this (so long as I don't get caught up in the create mode lol).

I took it as speed running it straight away. That would ruin the experience so thats what i voted. However after reading comments i see this isn't the case. i would of voted no. Speed running is just another element to the game.2008-10-20 23:15:00

I love time trials in racing games and this is basically what this is for the platform games.
I think it would be a great feature in the game as an after you've gone through it at a normal pace.
Also with the start and finish gates i can see loads of specially created levels being made by the public. If you had one right at the start and right at the finish and no prise bubbles what so ever in the level then your score is basically your time
